​It’s the End of My Trip ​by Dr. Larry Brilliant ​Sometime in the mid-90s we were on this land in Mendocino County. Wavy, Wavy’s wife Jah, my wife Girija, and I have a piece of land in Mendocino County, where Wavy has this remarkable Camp Winnarainbow. ​We were having a concert; it may have been called The Kate Wolf Concert at the time. There were about 5,000 people attending a Los Lobos concert on this land. ​At one point Wavy was on stage, and he had his microphone and a megaphone. While he was introducing them, he looked off in the distance at Route 101. You could see from the stage, coming down the road, coming towards the concert grounds, was a bus. As it got closer, you could see this was a psychedelic-painted bus. As it got closer and closer, I saw it said FURTHUR II. ​The crowd split in order to allow this bus to drive in, approaching the stage. The music stopped, Wavy was on stage, with his microphone, and as the bus got closer and closer Wavy was saying to the group, “I think it’s Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters.” ​The bus stopped like a Vulcan Starship looking at The Starship Enterprise decloaking. They’d all got their phasers on “stun.” Kesey made his way to the top of the bus and opened the hatch. He’d got a microphone and a megaphone himself. ​He yelled out, “Wavy, how are you?” Wavy says, “Welcome, Ken, nice to see you. You’re interrupting our concert.” ​Kesey responds: “I brought FURTHUR here and The Merry Pranksters, but I also have a great guest here. Wavy, don’t you agree we have failed to honor the elders of this movement we’re part of as much as we should?” Wavy and Kesey are having this conversation; 5,000 people were listening from the stage and the top of the bus. ​Kesey continued, “Well, I brought an elder with me that I think that we should honor. His name is Timothy Leary.” ​Making his way up the steps at the top of the bus from the inside was Timothy Leary in a sorcerer’s outfit and his little wizard pointy scepter. He was very thin and obviously dying of liver cancer. He struggled and got to the top of the bus, raised his wizard’s wand, and went around in a circle blessing all 5,000 people. Then he looked to Wavy and said, “Wavy, I’m dying; it’s the end of my trip. It’s been a wonderful trip. I’m not afraid of dying.” Kesey took the microphone and said, “Wavy, I think we need to honor Tim Leary now. What I have in mind is canonizing Tim Leary. Wavy, do you agree that Tim Leary should be canonized?” ​Wavy replied, “Yes, of course, but how will you canonize Tim Leary?” Kesey said, “I’m glad you asked.” ​We started to hear this sound of a motor grinding and something being elevated onto the top of the bus. After a lot of grinding, suddenly you saw he’d got this real cannon on top of the bus. Kesey announced, “I brought my own cannon to canonize Tim Leary.” ​Everyone was getting a little nervous. It was a crowded area and it was a big cannon. Kesey struck a match, the kind you would see in a comic book. He put it on the end of the cannon and there was a “boom,” but not a great blast. From the cannon came confetti and stars that showered down on everybody at the concert. Kesey said, “I hereby canonize Tim Leary.” The crowd went wild and Wavy went wild. Today I'm talking about the hassles I had with the insurance company with my car, also My Trip away and how important communities are in our lives in the modern world.ChinaI travelled China Dec 2019 - I was only there for 3 days as a stop over. I went to Guangzhou and travelled to Shenzhen and back to Guangzhou again. The subway system is amazing and simple to use even for a dyslexic person who struggles to read and write. The people keep to themselves, however if you need a hand for directions they're always willing to help. The cities are amazing, unreal buildings, the street food, the culture was all very exciting for me, I loved it and I want to go back. See Photos on FacebookBangladeshI travelled Bangladesh Dec 2019 - it's very hard country to travel nightmare buses and second class trains, it was a real adventure the people make the country amazing, it was hard, never a dull moment it was always dirty, but I always felt safe and I when into some off the beaten tracks, I walked around some scody places to get some good shots. I kid you not I was there 10 days and NEVER met another tourist. What a wicked couple of weeks I must’ve been naughty in a former life or this one!As many of you know I’m planning My Trip and I leave on Friday the 13th, unlucky date for some, as I’m heading to China, Bangladesh and coming home via New Delhi India. This intrepid journey is to celebrate my 50th. My main goal is to travel on top of a train in Bangladesh and take some awesome street photography, as well as a whole lot of video blogs for my TikTok account.Shit happens and shit happened when my car was parked on the side of the road last week. A 17-year-old guy who wasn’t concentrating on his driving, was dropping off a customers vehicle after it had been serviced from Blackwells Mazda. He crashed into my vehicle and set off his airbags, he went on two wheels flying past the doctors surgery window. I ran out to see what had happened and if he was ok and noticed he had smashed into my car.As you can imagine this wasn’t really something I needed to deal with just before Christmas, especially when I’m arranging my holiday. Everything went blurry and I didn’t really want to burden the young fella who made the mistake so when I had a moment to re-analyse the situation I started to assess what I needed to do.With the advice I got from members of ELITE : SIX I was soon in a rental car/van at no cost. Did you realise if you’re involved in a not-at-fault accident you are legally entitled to a rental car and there is a company setup to handle all this for you, Right2Drive.Next, I was instructed how the process works best to get my vehicle written off. The powers that be were telling me that it wouldn’t be written off because there’s too much money tied up in the new vehicle.Mike from Ferrymead Automotive went the extra mile to turn down a $17,000 repair job to give me the result I wanted, an unselfish act of bravery for any business person!Next minute the insurance company tells me that they going to settle for $24,500. However, the finance left on the vehicle was for $28,000, it was a bit of a hard pill to swallow. With the advice from my insurance company, who said they were batting for me, suggested if I didn’t agree on the figure, I could go back to the valuer and tell him I disagree with this valuation. The phone call went something like this, “Hi I’m Danny, you valued my car” he said “I value hundreds of cars, I’m not familiar with the vehicle you are talking about, put it in an email and I’ll answer it tomorrow” and he hangs up!So I had the car valued in the morning, ironically the company I purchased from, who isn’t allowed to give a valuation because of a conflict-of-interest, said the vehicle would be worth $27,000 as it has 25,000 km’s on the clock. So I emailed the valuation guy with the receipt of payment for purchasing the vehicle and also the valuation that I got from Holland’s (the original dealer). Half an hour later I got a reply apologising that he had got the amount wrong and said we will now pay you $26,000 based on four other 2019 cars that were selling in New Zealand. Being Internet savvy, I found one of the vehicles for sale for $26,500 that had 13,000 km’s on the clock, it was a Japanese import, my one was New Zealand new, obviously not like for like.As I was composing my email back to the valuer, the insurance company rings. “Hello this is State Insurance, my name is Anna, a few of the other girls and I have been reading your policy and did you know, because your&nbs

Join us as we revisit this fine interview from 2011 with Trombonist/bandleader Chris Barber, who has just announced his permanent retirement from full-time music after leading his internationally popular band since 1954. Born in Welwyn, Hertfordshire in 1930, Barber became an avid collector of jazz and blues records before buying his first trombone at age 18 and forming a semi-professional band in 1949 when he recorded for the first time. He studied trombone and double-bass at the Guildhall School of Music and assembled his first professional band in 1953, fronted by trumpeter Ken Colyer. Colyer was replaced by Pat Halcox in 1954 who remained with Barber for 54 years. His small group initially played in jazz clubs but by the late 50s became an attraction in large concert halls throughout the UK and Europe. Barber's Jazz Band first toured the USA in 1959 after having a million-selling hit with "Petite Fleur" that year, featuring clarinetist Monty Sunshine. He also featured a skiffle group with singer/guitarist Lonnie Donegan, which led to a national craze for such blues-based music. The powerful blues singer Ottilie Patterson, who later married Chris, starred with his band for 20 years.It was Barber's passion for Afro-American music that inspired him to bring many American blues and gospel legends to Britain to appear with his band, including Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Louis Jordan, Sonny Boy Williamson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Together with his business partner Harold Pendleton, Chris opened the celebrated Marquee Club in London in 1958 where many British blues performers were first showcased including Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and The Rolling Stones.Rolling Stone Bill Wyman notes, " If it had not been for Chris Barber I don't see how the 1960s bands would have ever happened in the UK. Apart from his own successful Trad Jazz Band, & the talent he had for bringing over to England a multitude of blues artists over the years - he created a section during his shows to play Skiffle music. Together with Lonnie Donegan they created hit records from this music that inspired a multitude of young people to pick up guitars. This included myself, Mick Jagger, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Who, and many others, who began their careers in small skiffle bands. As Donegan moved on to solo success, Chris then added Alexis Korner to his shows to play a blues segment. This inspired Brian Jones to form the Rolling Stones band & play blues music, together with other up & coming blues-inspired musicians. Chris Barber is entitled to be named the founder of the British music scene of the 1960s."Over the years Barber successfully developed his Jazz and Blues Band and, due to his love of Duke Ellington's music, in recent times he augmented his personnel and renamed it The Big Chris Barber Band featuring many talented young musicians, bringing a new lease of life to his music and touring widely. The band recorded prolifically over the years in its many forms with numerous special guests. Barber was awarded the OBE in 1991. His autobiography "Jazz Me Blues," co-written with Alyn Shipton, appeared in 2014. My Trip to the HospitalWe were playing soccer and the score was tied. I ran and kicked the ball as hard as I could, but the goalie was in the way.“Goal!” shouted Tiger. “We won!”“Ow!” I screamed.My leg hurt a lot, but I hardly cried at all.“Don't worry, Little Critter,” said Dad.“You'll be okay,” said Mom.An ambulance came. I was put on this skinny bed called a stretcher and then I got carried off the field. The whole soccer team waved good-bye.Mom came with me in the ambulance. I held her hand because she looked a little scared.When we got to the hospital, I got to ride on the stretcher all the way inside.A nurse listened to my heart with this thing called a stethoscope. Then she let me try the stethoscope on Mom.“Wow, Mom, your heart is beating really fast,” I said.The nurse gave me a big lollipop and told me I was very, very brave.The doctor came to examine my leg.“This may hurt a little,” he said.It sure did, but I took a deep breath and counted backwards 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1…and then it was over.“You have a broken leg, Little Critter,” he said.“Do you have the right tools to fix it?” I asked.The doctor nodded. Then he gave me a cool sticker that said LITTLE CHAMP because he said I was a real champ.Next I went to have special pictures taken called X-rays. The nurse took the pictures with this big machine that could have been on a spaceship. She said the X-rays showed all the bones in my leg.“You know, Super Critter has X-ray vision,” I told the nurse. “That means he can see through stuff, too, just like this machine.”After that, it was the time to get my cast. The doctor started wrapping bandages all around my leg.“I feel like a mummy,” I said.A little while later, the nurse came to check my cast. She said I could go home soon, but first……I had to learn how to use my crutches. My cast sure was heavy. It almost made me fall over……but I kept trying.Finally, I got it right. “Good job, Little Critter!” said the nurse. “Now you can go home.”Little Sister and Dad picked us up.Everybody wanted to help me with my crutches, but I told them I could do it myself. I walked all the way to the front door and I barely slipped once.Mom made spaghetti and meatballs, my favorite dinner in the whole world, and I got to eat it in front of the TV.I was sure happy to be home.At school, everyone said I was a hero.“We won the game all because of you, Little Critter,” said Tiger.Then all my friends signed my cast.By the time they were done……it looked like a rainbow!

I interview Borderline Crazy travel blogger and non-profit general manager Stephanie Williams about how she can afford to travel (and not work) for half the year, every year. Long episode description: As I mentioned in the show notes for episode 3 with Cait Flanders, when I was in Vancouver back in March to visit my family, I took the opportunity to do a few podcast interviews while I was there. Luckily, my good friend Stephanie Williams — who is not a personal finance blogger but rather an uber frugal traveller — so graciously agreed to be on my podcast when I was in town. So, off I went with my backpack full of equipment in tow and we recorded this episode in her apartment in Kitsilano (probably my favourite Vancouver neighbourhood fyi). When I started making a list of people I wanted to interview for my podcast, I knew I needed to have Stephanie on it because her story is seriously amazing. Now, me and Stephanie go way back. All the way back to our university days (she was even instrumental in me getting together with my now husband!). While I was studying film and dreaming of becoming an Oscar-winning director, she was studying geography and making plans to travel Europe after she finished her degree. And she did. She travelled around Europe, and of course got bit by the travel bug big time. Ever since, she’s done these major backpacking trips every year. Seriously, you name the country and she’s probably been there — twice. You may be wondering if she’s an heiress or something, because how could anyone afford to take off half the year every year to travel? No, she’s no heiress (that I know of?), so you’ll just have to listen to the episode to find out how she does it. Segment I.    What's Going On A.    I took a trip to California for MacWorld.  Tried to do last week's podcast in a train station, not a good idea.  Was going to do this one on the train but learned from my mistake. B.    Just to familiarize those who didn't listen to the first couple of podcasts or who might not remember, I divide my podcast into chapters, this way you can easily move back and forward within the podcasts.  The segments are: No. 1.    What's Going On – this one No. 2.    WoW News No. 3.    Alt Round Up – I did have the Burning Crusade Beta in the line up but now that it's about to go Gold, any discussion about BC will just fall into the normal layout. No. 4.    Server Shoutout – Listeners can email me and mention their guilds or just say hello No. 5.    In the House – How WoW affects you at home and how your home affects your WoW. No. 6.    Favorite Places in WoW – discusses little things about WoW that anyone can share, things that normally go unnoticed. No. 7.    Emails, when and if I get any. Segment III.    Alt Round Up – All Alts transferred to Baelgun except for one on each account.  There were some glitches that caused delays, but the blues on the WoW forums said they were working on it. A.    Who's Doing what No. 1.    Treshel No. 2.    Prilfire gathering in Badlands No. 3.    Pryl in Westfall No. 4.    Rilfire headed to Undercity to purchase a Guild Charter from the Guild Master there.  She's going to start Ctrl Alt WoW.  Aprillian was going to do it, but she's stuck in the transfer queue.  This means, for those who don't already know, after she purchases the Guild Charter from the Guild Master for 10 silver she has to find 9 other unique accounts to sign the charter and then she'll have a guild.  By unique I mean only one alt from any account can sign, so you can't make a guild by having you and your nine alts sign it.  So, if you don't have 9 people all ready to join your guild, it involves running around asking total strangers to sign, usually you offer them 50 silver.  Some will ask for more, some will do it for free.  Once you have the 9 names, you go back to the Guild Master and register your guild and then you will have a guild with guild chat and you will be the Guild leader.  Most of the people you've asked to sign your charter will leave.  Which is okay, because I just wanted the guild because I like having all of my alts in the same guild because it makes it easier to keep track of them and automatically makes their names come up in the mailbox to entry line when you start typing the first few letters.
