Description: Today, Jen and Amy sit down with a treasured friend of the show, Franciscan priest and truth-teller, Father Richard Rohr. Father Rohr has been a genuine hero of the faith who has guided us through much uncertainty over the years. Sometimes, we turn to him for mystic insights into lighter things like our Enneagram types and relationships. But today, we turned to him for help processing the anger, grief, and dismay we feel living in America right now. And he met the moment, as he always does. With gentle grace, Father Rohr guides us through our toughest questions, like: How do we live compassionately in a time of violence and despair? And what can we do with our private disappointments and the anger we feel in such an unjust world? What can we do? Non-violent resistance is our chief responsibility right now. Like John Lewis said, these times call for some “good trouble”. Join the marches, call and write our elected leaders, and mobilize strategically for upcoming elections. We have several democratic tools at our disposal. Where can we look for inspiration? Father Rohr talks to us about his latest project, The Tears of Things, which recounts the timeless wisdom of the Hebrew prophets and notes “If we can understand the prophets so poorly, if at all, no wonder we have not understood Jesus.” What's one thing we can do to live prophetically in these chaotic times? And Father Rohr tells us what is giving him hope today. You'll find it contagious. Thought-provoking Quotes: You know that the book of Lamentations was included in the Bible and it's very telling that it's not lamenting any single war or single death. It's about universal sadness, giving us permission for a universal lament for the tragic sense of life.” - Fr. Richard Rohr “We have to dig deep for hope. There isn't a logical basis for it today. But I do find it in nature.” – Fr. Richard Rohr “Tears put us in touch with the soul and that's their great gift.” – Fr. Richard Rohr “Trust the excluded ones. Trust the little people. Jesus told us that. They will be much closer to the inside of the gospel than anybody who's easily holding power or position. Look for the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control. You won't as readily find that in billionaires as you will in the little people.” – Fr. Richard Rohr “You're ping ponging back and forth between rage and lament. And it's hard to find your center. And then the next day it's something different. It is a daily onslaught right now. It's so overwhelming.” – Amy Hardin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer by Fr. The healing of the blind man in Mark 8:22-26 is the only gradual healing recorded in the gospels. There must be something that the Holy Spirit wants to teach us in this. Certainly, there was no deficiency on Jesus' part or weakness in the miracle power of God. So what was going on? In this message you will learn how environments and company can affect spiritual power – unbelief impedes the supernatural. Also, David spends some time considering that not all healing is instant but a process, and we need to have much faith and submit to God's ways and timing. God's power is the same, but not everyone receives it the same way. This message is available at https://www.preachtheword.com now in MP3 audio format...

Geoff & Rory celebrate Valentine's with a fascinating tale that intertwines love and country houses.
In this profound episode, Dr. Jennifer Reid speaks with renowned Jungian analyst Dr. James Hollis about personal growth, life transitions, and the journey of self-discovery. Dr. Hollis, a distinguished faculty member at the Jung Center of Houston and author of over 20 books, shares deep insights about finding one's authentic path and understanding the messages our psyche sends us.The Journey from Academia to Depth PsychologyDr. Hollis shares his personal story of transformation, beginning with a midlife depression while working as a humanities professor. This crisis led him to retrain as a Jungian analyst in Zurich, Switzerland, ultimately discovering that his true calling lay in helping others explore their psychological depths.Understanding the Soul's JourneyDr. Hollis explains how we often lose touch with our authentic selves in childhood and must work to recover this connection in adulthood. He emphasizes that this recovery isn't self-indulgent but rather essential for both personal growth and our relationships with others. The Two Halves of LifeThe conversation explores how life's first half focuses on adaptation and fitting in, while the second half calls us to deeper questions of meaning and authenticity. Dr. Hollis discusses how this transition often emerges during midlife or significant life changes. On the Soul's Journey:"The soul is intuited in childhood, pushed aside by the adaptive choices of consciousness and recovered in adulthood only when we are willing to open to it."On Childhood's Impact:"Jung said the greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of the parent. And what he meant by that was wherever the parent is stuck, the child sooner or later is going to internalize that as a roadmap and either repeat that, which is very common, or spend a lifetime trying to get away from it."On Finding Your Path:"You're not here to live someone else's pattern. That's already taken. You're here to learn yours, find your path."On Self-Understanding:"It's not so much what we do or think or feel or believe or desire. It's what that is in service to inside of us that makes a difference."On Personal Growth:"Something inside of each of us knows what's right for us. How do you access that? How do you pay attention to that?"Dr. Reid on Instagram: @jenreidmd and LinkedInAlso check out Dr. Reid's regular contributions to Psychology Today: Think Like a Shrink. Thanks for reading A Mind of Her Own and listening to The Reflective Mind! This was a fun and deep and meaningful conversation with my good friend Jennifer McDaniel. Jennifer is a nutritionist and author, and is the founder and director of McDaniel Nutrition Therapy. I first met Jennifer in early 2022 when I was preparing to run the 106 mile UTMB trail race and she was my assigned nutritionist. In this conversation we explore a trend that we have been noticing in our culture for many people to move away from social media as well as figuring out other avenues to quiet all the technological noise. We have noticed this move in our work with clients, as well as experiencing a personal shift within us. Ultimately, the conversation gets down to the concept of self-worth and how much of it is often built upon notions of one's producitivty and ability to perform tasks. And how it can be difficult to move out of arenas (such as social media, email, hustle culture/work, etc.) when one's self-worth is often maintained by engagement and productivity in those areas. Below is a list of authors and books and resources mentioned in the podcast. Chapter 1: Summary of Falling Upward"Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life" by Richard Rohr explores the spiritual journey through the two distinct phases of life. The book contrasts the first half of life, which is predominantly focused on building identity, success, and security, with the second half of life, characterized by deeper introspection, spiritual growth, and a search for meaning.Rohr posits that many people spend their early years striving to establish their place in the world, often clinging to ego-driven ambitions and societal expectations. However, as they age, they may find themselves encountering failures, suffering, or existential questions that prompt them to reevaluate their beliefs and values. This shift, he argues, is essential for spiritual maturation and can lead to a more profound understanding of oneself and connection to others.Throughout the book, Rohr discusses various themes, including the importance of paradox, the role of suffering in growth, and the necessity of letting go of the need for control. He emphasizes that true wisdom and spirituality often emerge from confronting and embracing life's difficulties, rather than avoiding them.Ultimately, "Falling Upward" encourages readers to view their life's journey as a cyclical process of growth and transformation, urging them to embrace both the heights and depths of their experiences as vital to achieving spiritual fulfillment.Chapter 2: The Theme of Falling Upward"Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life" by Richard Rohr explores the spiritual journey of individuals through the two halves of life. Here are key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas: Key Plot Points:1. Introduction to Life's Two Halves:- Rohr introduces the concept that life can be divided into two stages. The first half focuses on building an identity, achieving success, and establishing societal roles, while the second half is about transcendence, inner depth, and spiritual growth.2. The Role of Failure:- The book emphasizes that failure and suffering are essential for personal and spiritual development. Rohr argues that encountering difficulties enables individuals to grow and mature spiritually.3. Importance of Shadows:- Rohr discusses the idea of 'shadow work' — understanding and integrating the darker aspects of oneself, which is crucial for spiritual growth. This theme highlights the psychological and spiritual depth necessary for the journey through the second half of life.4. Mystical Experiences:- The book outlines how mystical experiences can reshape one's understanding of spirituality, emphasizing that true spirituality transcends mere belief systems and doctrines.5. A Call for Authenticity:- Rohr encourages readers to live authentically and courageously, embracing their true selves instead of conforming to societal expectations. Character Development:- While "Falling Upward" does not focus on traditional characters like a novel might, it could be conceptualized as a journey of the reader or a general representation of individuals undergoing growth:- First-Half Characters: Often driven by ego, success, and external validation, these characters embody ambition and the pursuit of goals, reflecting societal norms.- Second-Half Characters: In contrast, individuals in this stage are marked by humility, wisdom, and a quest for deeper spirituality, accepting their flaws and embracing authenticity. Thematic Ideas:1. Spiritual Maturity:- The central theme of the book is that spiritual maturity comes from navigating both success and failure. The second half of life is not merely about aging but about deepening one's spiritual and emotional understanding.2. The Paradox of the Journey:- Rohr...

Painstakingly researched and written by football-obsessed writer and experienced game journalist, historian, and documentarian Richard Moss – author of Bitmap's own The Secret History of Mac Gaming – A Tale of Two Halves: The History Of Football Video Games stays keenly on the ball as it shares the rich and influential history of video game football – or 'soccer', for our American readers – striving to understand the very best the genre has to offer; and those releases that go a little wide of their target. A Tale of Two Halves takes you on a fascinating journey from the very first examples of the form all the way through to the genre's 2000s' heyday. It hits the back of the net with expert analysis of over 400 football games, including Sensible Soccer, Kick Off, Match Day, FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, This Is Football, Championship Manager, Premier Manager, and both old-school and new-school Football Manager. Gathered together in a single volume, that remarkable spread of releases presents a surprising variety of interpretations of the beautiful game, showcasing one of the medium's most creative, beguiling realms. A Tale of Two Halves primarily focuses on footy gaming's formative years – meaning from around 1980 to 2010 – and carefully divides the genre into two distinct halves, taking a considered look at each. As such, the first half is dominated by the fast and simple 2D action of icons like Kick Off, International Soccer, and Nintendo's Soccer. Then, following the half-time whistle, it turns its attention to the increasingly realistic 3D outings defined by icons like FIFA, Pro Evo, and Virtua Striker. Across its 628 pages, A Tale of Two Halves also features a foreword by legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley, hundreds of meticulously realised screenshots, and 13 interviews with pioneering football game developers. Inside you'll also find a series of illustrations from James Reynolds' 'Unlicensed FC' project – which celebrates Pro Evo's unusual takes on players' real names – as well as perfectly pitched pixel art from the team at 8-Bit Football. Numerous gaming platforms are covered, from the Atari 2600 and C64 to the Collecovison, via the Amiga line, PlayStation 1, Xbox 360, Arcades, and many more. Ben Goessling, Andrew Krammer and Jim Souhan recap the Vikings' 31-29 win at Lambeau Field, where a 28-0 lead slowly evaporated over the course of the second half. How did Kevin O'Connell's confidence in Sam Darnold help them put this one away? Why did the Packers offense suddenly come to life in the fourth quarter? Just how much did Aaron Jones enjoy this win against his former team?
The ATP is thrilled to be back and to capture the details of Everton's first PL victory of the 24-25 season. James and Ryan attempt to break down a very tactical match that featured a very poor first half and a much better second. The dynamic duo get into all the highlights and some pretty telling numbers as well as listener comments that guide us through a very mixed performance at Goodison Park. They also talk a bit about the Friedkin impending takeover and discuss how the team looks now that Jarrad Branthwaite is finally back from injury. There may finally be some reasons to be optimistic.
