Be it resolved, don't trust the mainstream media. That was the subject of a recent Munk debate in Toronto which saw audience members thoroughly reject the half-hearted defence of legacy media. A majority of the audience went into the evening against the resolution – declaring their trust in establishment media. But by the end of the evening, 39% of the vote had shifted and the room overwhelmingly sided against legacy media. Also on the show, CTV News repeats Chinese propaganda about Zero Covid, a legacy media journalist gets triggered by the sight of the word "freedom" on a sweater and CBC Comedy publishes an insanely cringeworthy piece of content. Comedian/Writer/Actor Cara Connors brought so much passion for her vision and what she wants to accomplish to the show. I love being around people who are passionate about what they do. It is energizing, inspiring, and reminds you of what is possible in your own life. Sometimes as artists we can fall into the mindset of feeling like we need to be validated or given the permission to ask to be “seen” out of fear of stepping on someone’s toes. Cara blows the lid off of this type of thinking and I could not agree more! At one point in the interview, we were discussing contacting people for opportunities and “jumping the line” so to speak, and Cara proclaimed, “Let them tell me, no, ‘cause I am not going to tell myself no!”. How often are a daily basis are you telling yourself no? Cara has only been doing comedy for a few years and in that time she has accomplished a lot. She openly shared her goals and dreams with me and does not see any reason why her or anyone else should not proclaim what they want aloud and go for it, “A lot of people I notice don’t like to vocalize what their actual goals are because they don’t want to say that my dream is to do A, B, or C because then if I don’t achieve it, how embarrassing… and I’m like..Go crazy! I think it’s embarrassing to not do that and to be scared of something that hasn’t happened!” Put it out there! The Toronto Star built an entire exposé on female genital mutilation based predominantly around a mid-level civil servant's email from three years ago. Also, CBC Comedy is so unfunny it's funny. Or is that the other way around? Either way, a former member of Kellie Leitch's team has made it his mission to bring it down. Writer/broadcaster, and producer Naheed Mustafa joins us. We all remember the original 1967 Spider-Man cartoon (you know the one with the catchy theme song) but did you know that all the dialogue for the series was recorded in Toronto and Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is not only still around, but still acting at 86-years-young as the star of the new CBC Comedy web series, My 90-year-old Roommate? The legend comes by to spill secrets from the production of Spider-Man, including the fact that the voice acting company for all the original Marvel cartoons – Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Marvel Superheroes and more – was originally put together during the production of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation classic Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer where Paul starred as Hermey the Elf. Fast forward into the 2000s and Paul inadvertently found himself a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a live-action bit part in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and a prior relationship with star Edward Norton.
