Episode 63 - Murdock and Marvel: 2002 Part 2 The world was a dangerous and frightening place, and America was trying to come to terms with how to move forward, both internally and on the world stage. And comics showed a lot of that anxiety. But even so, 2002 was a big year for all involved in the comics world, as sales of actual honest to goodness comic books actually rose 10% this year to 230 Million dollars, the first time that the industry had seen that occur since 1993, when comic sales had peaked at around 850 Million. And even as traffic in stores was increasing, Hollywood was starting to understand how to make comic properties work on the screen, both small and large. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2002. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #27-38, Daredevil: Yellow #6, Paradise X: Heralds #1-2, Elektra #6, Giant Size Mini-Marvels: Starring Spidey #1, Marvel Knight: Millennial Visions #1, Peter Parker: Spider-Man #39 and 41, Essential Marvel Team-Up #1, Paradise X #0-5, Marvel Knight #2-6, Marvel Knights Double Shot #1 and 4, Amazing Spider-Man #2, Ultimate Spider-Man Special #1, Order #5-6, Spider-Man/Daredevil #1, Marville #2 along with Marvel Masterworks: The Submariner #1 and Daredevil: Yellow, Fantastic First, Life and Death of Captain Marvel graphic novels Writing: Brian Michael Bendis (#27-38) Pencils: Alex Maleev (#27-37), Manuel Gutierrez (#38) Inks: Alex Maleev (#27-37), Manuel Gutierrez (#38) The year for Matt Murdock and Daredevil begins with a 6-part story called Underboss that began in December 2001. In that story we see a bombing attempt on Matt Murdock's life just outside of the courthouse and we see Sammy Silke and several of the Kingpin's other bosses repeatedly stab the kingpin leave him dying on the floor. So, who put a hit out on Matt Murdock and who is this Sammy Silke who rallied Kingpin's underlings against him? We start to get answers about this over the next 5 books through flashbacks while the story continues forward. Silke is the son of a crime boss in Chicago who needed to get out of town. He came to New York and went to work for the Kingpin – but when the Kingpin wouldn't let him put a hit on Matt Murdock – He caught wind of Murdock's seemly open secret within the Kingpin network and set in motion a plan to take out Murdock and Kingpin with the help of Kingpin's son – Richard. Vanessa Fisk finds out her husband has been stabbed and in critical condition (and not killed as reports claim). She goes to New York and despite objections from his doctor, wants Kingpin taken to the airport and flown out of the country. She also orders those that betrayed Kingpin to be killed -including her son Richard whom she visits and kills herself. Underboss ends with Silke, fearing for his life, turning himself into the FBI and asking for protection. When the FBI refuse, he tells them Murdock's secret identity. From there, things start to really go crazy for Matt Murdock. An FBI agent, needing some cash, sells Murdock's secret to the Daily Globe (the Bugle's rival paper) and it's ran as a front-page story and a media circus descents on Murdock's brownstone. Ben Urich and Peter Parker tell J. Jonah Jameson the DD secret identity story is a hoax but both refuse to tell him who DD really is; Foggy tries to get Matt to give up his life as DD. Seeing the story, Mr. Hyde shows up and starts destroying Murdock's house before Daredevil and Spider-Man can intervene. After some time away, Matt Murdock holds a press conference denying he's Daredevil. We'll jump into more detail about that during this week's spotlight. After a rooftop chat with Elektra at the urging of Black Widow, it looks like things will be settle with the Daily Globe after Daredevil visits the FBI agent who gave up his secret, but then the Globe owner Rosenthal nixes the deal because Murdock was being so smug about the agreement. The year ends with part 1 of the next named storyline, The Trail of the Century, which we'll talk about in 2003. Josh Hallam and Alice Oliver (Just Films & That podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Josh's choice Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) is the third instalment of the Tom Holland Spider-Man Marvel/Sony franchise. Directed by Jon (Spider-Man: Homecoming) Watts, it sees Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya's MJ, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Jacob Batalon as Ned. Directly following the events from Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man has been revealed by Mysterio. In an effort to restore things back to normal, Peter visits Dr Stange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell to make Spider-Man's identity a secret again. When the spell goes wrong, it opens up the multiverse and unleashes several entities connected to Peter into this universe. Spider-Man NWH is the highest grossing Spider-Man film and saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their versions of Spider-Man alongside their respective villains. Some of which were included using previous footage rather than new footage. And now this rambling but too brief review of "Spider-Man: The Death of the Stacys", that collects "Amazing Spider-Man" #88-92 to #121-122, two of the most tragic events in Peter Parker/Spider-Man's life.
Let's go down the Paul Jenkins hitlist, shall we? He edited Eastman's and Laird's Mirage Studio books, including TMNT; he served as EIC for Tundra Publishing, Majestic Entertainment, and Scoreboard Comics; then he decided to write. Like many other British writers before and since, Paul broke in on a little Vertigo title called Hellblazer. Next, after some horror work at Marvel, he helped launch the Marvel Knights imprint with Jae Lee on the groundbreaking Inhumans limited series. Then it was off to the races with the introduction of The Sentry (also with Jae Lee), long runs on The Incredible Hulk and Peter Parker: Spider-Man, and a small project called Origin. Of course, that would be enough for someone's whole career, but Paul has continued writing for Marvel, DC, and Image, not to mention multiple video games and his own Kickstarter-backed series Fairy Quest. We're exhausted just thinking about his career! You can follow Paul on all the socials, including Twitter @mypauljenkins and Instagram @pauljenkinswriter. _____________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Presents BTAS Full Movie https://youtu.be/OyTiWwJtvw0 MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS Owen Wilson Is Reportedly Returning as Agent Mobius in Deadpool 3 https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-3-owen-wilson-agent-mobius-loki-mcu/ Owen Wilson may be joining Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3. A recent report from scooper DanielRPK suggests Loki's breakout character Agent Mobius will feature in Wade Wilson's first Marvel Cinematic Universe outing. It's also claimed that the timeline-hopping investigator will play a major part in the film, leading many fans to speculate that Deadpool 3 will include some multiversal shenanigans. At the time of writing, neither Marvel Studios nor Disney has made an official announcement regarding Agent Mobius' return in the Merc with the Mouth's third blockbuster. Ryan Reynolds Would Love a Taylor Swift Cameo in Deadpool 3 https://www.etonline.com/ryan-reynolds-on-taking-a-break-from-acting-and-viral-taylor-swift-theories-exclusive-194032 After months of fan speculation about a possible Taylor Swift cameo in Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds has finally addressed the rumors. As reported by ET, when asked about a potential collaboration with the Grammy-award-winning singer, the Wade Wilson actor voiced his enthusiasm for the idea. "Are you kidding me? I would do anything for that woman. She's a genius," Reynolds explained. Unfortunately, though the Deadpool star would love to have the iconic singer included in the film, it doesn't seem to be on the cards. RUMOR: Deadpool 3 Will Revisit Previous Fox Franchises Including Fantastic Four https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-3-revisit-previous-fox-movies-fantastic-four-rumor/ Deadpool 3 will reportedly see the Merc with the Mouth visiting some of Fox's superhero franchises. As per a rumor by scooper DanielRPK, Wade Wilson will be taking a trip to various other superhero films to achieve an as-yet-unknown goal. While it's currently unknown how Deadpool 3 will integrate these franchises into its plot, the report specifies that he'll arrive in the X-Men movies as well as the 2005 Fantastic Four film. It's worth noting that neither Marvel Studios nor Disney have made any kind of mention of this particular rumor which has yet to be officially verified. David Harbour Hopes to Play Red Guardian Far Beyond Thunderbolts https://www.gamesradar.com/david-harbour-talks-santa-stranger-things-and-thunderbolts/ David Harbour has made it clear he's loving the role of Red Guardian, and the Stranger Things actor would like to keep embodying the Russian super-soldier long after the release of Thunderbolts in 2024. "I really like him," Harbour said of Alexei Shostako, also known as Marvel's Red Guardian, in a recent interview with GamesRadar+. When asked if he'd be open to playing Red Guardian "over and over" in future projects, Harbour was enthusiastic. "I do. I love Red Guardian. I can't wait to pull back the layers. The great thing about him is that he's not very well-defined in the comics, like some of the other Marvel superheroes. So we can play with him in a different way, and be surprising and unexpected." Harbour first appeared as Red Guardian in 2021's Black Widow, in which he acted as a father figure to both Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Tom Holland Reportedly Closes Deal for Spider-Man 4 https://thedirect.com/article/tom-holland-spider-man-4-contract-update Tom Holland has reportedly closed a deal to return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studio's upcoming Spider-Man 4. According to multiple insiders on Twitter (via The Direct), Holland has signed a new Marvel/Sony contract that will see the actor return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the beloved Wall-Crawler. While it is currently unknown how many films the new deal will cover, Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez tweeted that "Holland's contract does not feature Disney+ appearances," which will surely disappoint fans who were hoping to see the webslinger cameo in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. At the time of writing, reps for Marvel, Sony and Holland have not responded to the recent contract reports. DISNEY+ Marvel Releases Oddly Heartwarming Werewolf by Night Making-Of Doc https://www.cbr.com/marvel-werewolf-by-night-behind-the-scenes-doc-michael-giacchino/ Marvel Studios released a new documentary, titled Special Presentation: Director by Night, which follows the journey of composer Michael Giacchino as he makes his directorial debut with Werewolf by Night. Director by Night is helmed by Michael Giacchino's documentarian brother Anthony Giacchino and is currently available to stream on Disney+. The hour-long making-of documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the production for Werewolf by Night. Per the synopsis available on Disney+, Director by Night "tells the story of two Academy Award-winning brothers and their different ways of telling stories" and "explores the duo's filmmaking origins in the small New Jersey town where they grew up." Along with interviews with Michael Giacchino and his family members, Director by Night also features appearances from the cast, including stars Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly. AGATHA: COVEN OF CHAOS: DIRECTORS AND EPISODE COUNT REVEALED: EXCLUSIVE https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/11/04/agatha-coven-of-chaos-ep-count/ Two directors for Agatha: Coven of Chaos have reportedly been revealed, along with the show's episode count. According to The Illuminerdi, WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer will reportedly direct at least one episode of the upcoming Disney+ series. Gandja Monteiro, best known for her work on Showtime's The Chi, is reported to be taking up the director's seat as well. The report also claims that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be a nine-episode limited series, putting it at the same episode count as WandaVision and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Whether the episodes run for the same length as these two shows has not been revealed and the reports have not been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios. Following in the footsteps of Wandavision, the series starring Kathryn Hahn's iconic witch will also only last a single season. DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN: NEW DISNEY+ SERIES SET TO FILM IN NYC IN 2023: EXCLUSIVE https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/11/07/daredevil-born-again-film-nyc/ According to The Illuminerdi, Born Again will shoot on location in New York City with production commencing in February 2023. The Marvel Cinematic Universe series will then film its 18-episode first season over the following 11 months, with production expected to last until the year's end in December. Although most Marvel projects are filmed in the tax-friendly state of Georgia, Born Again will shoot in New York, meaning the series will be able to deliver a more authentic New York feel to the MCU's Hell's Kitchen. Netflix's Daredevil series was also shot in New York during its three-season run. Marvel Reportedly In Talks with Courteney Cox to Join Wonder Man Cast https://www.cbr.com/courteney-cox-talks-wonder-man-cast-report/ Scream 6 star Courteney Cox is being eyed for a role in Marvel Studios' Wonder Man. As per a rumor by scooper DanielRPK, Marvel has reportedly met with Cox to discuss her joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an undisclosed role in the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man. Cox is an acting veteran, especially in the television industry where she has been part of several successful sitcoms, including Family Ties and Cougar Town. However, she is still perhaps best known for her starring role as Monica Geller on the NBC sitcom Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Reel Comic Heroes: 151 - Spider-Man (94) Script Read We decided to do something a little different this episode and assembled some folks for a script read of the unmade ‘Spider-Man' from 1994. We're performing the 2nd revision by Joseph Goldman, James Cameron and John Brancato from 7/29/1993. This script would've eventually changed even more and would have become the version James Cameron planned to direct with Leonardo DiCaprio as Peter Parker. Ultimately, this project never got made (for several reasons) but we dusted off the script and gave it our best. Okey dokey. Reeve Carney is an actor, singer-songwriter, and musician, who may be best known for originating the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway, and playing Orpheus in the original Broadway cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. Other notable roles include his portrayal of Dorian Gray in the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, and Riff Raff in the Fox musical television film The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again. Reeve is also the lead singer and songwriter of the band Carney, also consisting of his brother Zane, Aiden Moore, and Jon Epcar, who together have toured with The Veronicas, and opened for Arcade Fire and U2. He recently appeared as Tom Ford in the Oscar nominated film House of Gucci, and can currently be seen performing his original music in his residency at The Green Room 42, or captivating audiences eight times a week as Orpheus in Hadestown on Broadway. Reeve chronicles his almost 27 year guitar playing journey, which began at age 12 and led to playing in nightclubs in LA a few years later, where fellow musicians convinced him if he ever wanted to lead a band, he needed to learn how to sing. He recalls meeting Julie Taymor for the first time at one of his band's shows, and how that meeting set the course for working with Bono and The Edge, and originating the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man on Broadway. Reeve also shares how he became involved with Hadestown, how the character of Orpheus changed significantly between their run at the National Theatre in London and the Broadway opening, and why he said “no” when asked to be a part of the first reading in 2012.
