Si on lit distraitement la presse économique, on a l'impression que la Chine ne va pas très bien : sa croissance n'est pas au top de sa forme et la relance économique attendue par les experts après la levée de la politique "Zero Covid" ne vient pas. Bref, le moteur économique chinois est en cale sèche. Il tourne au ralenti, car les citoyens chinois consomment peu. Par conséquent, ces mêmes industriels chinois jouent à fond la carte de l'exportation et n'hésitent plus, voire pas, à pratiquer le dumping pour prendre des parts de marché à nos entreprises. L'Europe se défend comme elle peut, notamment en imposant des droits de douane plus élevés contre les produits chinois. Mais avez-vous observé une chose ? Alors que nous essayons de freiner les exportations chinoises de voitures électriques, les Chinois essaient en contrepartie de freiner nos exportations européennes de cognac, de lait et de fromage. Rien que ce constat sonne un petit peu comme une défaite. Il est loin, le temps où la Chine était associée à des produits bas de gamme ou de mauvaise qualité. Non seulement les Chinois continuent à nous vendre des t-shirts bas de gamme, mais ils fabriquent et vendent aussi des voitures électriques, des centrales nucléaires et des trains à grande vitesse. Mieux encore, pendant que nous organisons des colloques pour savoir si les réseaux sociaux abrutissent ou non nos enfants, eux, ont déjà décidé de limiter à très peu d'heures par semaine les moments où les jeunes Chinois pourront avoir accès aux réseaux sociaux. Les anciens Grecs traitaient de barbares tous ceux qui n'étaient pas grecs. Et je me demande si nous ne sommes pas devenus aujourd'hui les barbares des Chinois sans nous en rendre compte. The pandemic hasn't raged within China the way it has in the rest of the world over the past few years. However, that's beginning to change. Following a wave of protests, Chinese leadership officially rolled back some of the country's most stringent Covid restrictions. The end of “zero Covid” policies, combined with an already strained medical system, along with low vaccination and immunity levels, could lead to disastrous public health and economic consequences. China could see over a million deaths in 2023, according to projections from the University of Washington Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation. Now, Chinese authorities are deploying some of the same tools they used to limit the spread of COVID-19 to track down demonstrators who have been speaking out against the government in public and online. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams speaks with Marketplace’s China correspondent, Jennifer Pak, who’s been covering this story from Shanghai. Anger over China's “Zero-COVID” policy erupted in protests this week. It's a startling and nearly unheard-of challenge to President Xi's power, a short time after he secured a third term in office. The anger over Zero COVID is unique, the staff writer Jiayang Fan tells the host Tyler Foggatt, because it has united disparate groups across China that transcend class and geography. But Fan cautions about concluding this moment is the start of a revolution: “These political wobbles are something that the Communist Party is accustomed to, to a certain degree, despite trying to prevent it at all costs.” A clampdown seems to be already under way.     The protests also arrive at a delicate moment in U.S.-China relations. Tensions over trade and Taiwan have flared. The Biden Administration has even criticized China's Zero-COVID restrictions and lockdowns. “I can see Beijing using Biden's words as a piece of evidence that the protests in China are not organic but somehow seeded by hostile foreign agents,” Fan says. “Even though clearly not many foreigners are getting into China these days.”

After years of strict Covid restrictions, people are taking to the streets in cities across China. But they're not just protesting zero-Covid, they're voicing displeasure with Xi Jinping himself.
