Top Stories for August 12th Publish Date: August 12th From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, August 12th and Happy Birthday to Pete Sampras I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Does GCPS make the grade? Central Gwinnett grad to compete in international Deaflympics games in Tokyo Lanier Education Foundation awards $20K to Cluster schools, funds two scholarships All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Does GCPS make the grade? “Get a good education.” We’ve all heard it a million times, right? But what does that even mean anymore? And how’s Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) holding up under the weight of that promise? Well, it’s complicated—like, really complicated. COVID flipped everything upside down. Kids learning on screens, parents suddenly hyper-aware of what’s being taught, teachers scrambling to adapt. It wasn’t pretty. And now? GCPS is still untangling the mess: learning loss, absenteeism, behavior issues. But they’re trying. Social workers, behavioral coaches, literacy plans—it’s all part of their “Blueprint for the Future.” Progress? Sure. Perfection? Not even close. Education’s messy. Always has been. Always will be. STORY 2: Central Gwinnett grad to compete in international Deaflympics games in Tokyo Tawnecia Rush has been wearing hearing aids since she was 9. Conversations? She’s got them down—sharp focus, expert lip reading, and the occasional “Pardon?” when she needs something repeated. But on the basketball court? It’s like a whole different language—fluid, instinctive, no barriers. Growing up in Lawrenceville, she honed her skills playing with her dad and brothers at the Boys & Girls Club, eventually suiting up for Central Gwinnett High. Now, two decades later, she’s earned a spot on the USA Deaf Women’s Basketball team, heading to Tokyo for the Deaflympics this November. “This is huge,” Rush said. “A chance to compete against the best, no limits, no excuses.” Her drive didn’t stop on the court. After two years at Gallaudet University, immersed in deaf culture and basketball, she transferred to Kennesaw State to finish her marketing degree. STORY 3: Lanier Education Foundation awards $20K to Cluster schools, funds two scholarships The Lanier Education Foundation just handed out $20,000 to the schools in the Lanier Cluster—split evenly, of course—and also funded the Lanier Leadership Conference and the Cluster’s multilingual programs. Oh, and two Lanier High grads, Kori Joseph (now at Georgia College & State) and Gabryelle Walker (Kennesaw State), each snagged a $1,000 “Make A Difference” Scholarship. It’s a little financial boost for students heading to college, trade school, or wherever their next chapter takes them. The Lanier Cluster includes Lanier High, Lanier Middle, and three elementary schools: Sugar Hill, Sycamore, and White Oak. Want to help? Visit laniereducationfoundation.org. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 5 STORY 4: Man dead after shooting at Snellville area home Gwinnett County Police are digging into a deadly shooting that went down Friday night in unincorporated Snellville, leaving one man dead. It happened around 7 p.m. on the 3900 block of Lee Road. A call came in about a dispute—then gunfire. When officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds and tried to help. He was rushed to the hospital but didn’t make it. One person was detained at the scene and is being questioned. Police say it’s a homicide investigation, but the motive? Still unclear. The victim’s name hasn’t been released yet—next of kin need to be notified first. If you know anything, call Gwinnett detectives at 770-513-5300. Prefer to stay anonymous? Hit up Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or stopcrimeATL.com. There’s even a cash reward for tips that lead to an arrest. STORY 5: Lawrenceville mourning death of former City Manager Bob Baroni Lawrenceville is mourning the loss of Bob Baroni, the city’s first-ever manager and a man who dedicated more than four decades to shaping the town he loved. Baroni, 80, passed away Tuesday. Baroni wore many hats—parks and rec director, city clerk, and finally city manager. He oversaw projects like the construction of City Hall and was known for his steady leadership and fiscal smarts. Even after retiring in 2015, he stayed on as a consultant to help the city transition. “We’ve built a family here,” Baroni said at the time. His funeral was held Saturday at Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Loganville. He was laid to rest at Oconee Memorial Park in Watkinsville. Break: STORY 6: Gwinnett Sheriff's Office looking at expanding county jail The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is eyeing a big change—expanding the jail with a new tower. Why? Well, the current setup is showing its age, and the inmate population has jumped 35% since 2021. That’s a lot of strain on a facility that’s been around since 1991. Chief Deputy Cleo Atwater told the county’s budget review committee on Wednesday that it’s time to secure funding for this project. The newer Wimbley Tower, built in 2006, has seen updates—control boards, cameras, even door indicator lights—but the older building? It’s stuck in the past. Reinforced doors with security flaps? Not possible. And with 2,400 inmates now (up from 1,800), plus the need for better mental health and medical care spaces, the pressure’s on. Atwater says they’re committed to making this happen by 2026. STORY 7: 'Great bargains' —Kidsignments is back this week at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds The Kidsignments sale is back at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds this week, running through Saturday—and if you’ve got kids, you need to check it out. Organizer Jeri Lynn gets it: “Times are tough, and we’re thrilled to help parents stretch their dollars. Over 1,000 families are participating, so the selection is going to be amazing—everything from baby gear to teen clothes, toys, bikes, you name it.” It’s all gently used, high-quality stuff—perfect for sustainable parenting without breaking the bank. Seriously, don’t miss it. For details, head to kidsignments.com. Your wallet will thank you. We’ll have closing comments after this. GDP Script/ Top Stories for February 8th Publish Date: February 8th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, February 8th and Happy Birthday to dave Farrell ***02.08.25 - BIRTHDAY – DAVE FARRELL*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Suwanee Police Release Images Of Vehicle Involved In Fatal Hit-And-Run Parkview student brought unloaded gun to school Legislation invites lawsuits against cities and schools that ignore immigration law All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Suwanee Police Release Images Of Vehicle Involved In Fatal Hit-And-Run Suwanee Police are investigating a hit-and-run that killed 60-year-old David Wayne Anglin on Old Peachtree Road last month. Security footage shows a dark-colored sedan with dark rims speeding near the scene, now identified as a vehicle of interest. Police have released images and are seeking public help to identify the car and its occupants. Anyone with information or dash cam footage is urged to contact the investigating detective at 770-904-7650. STORY 2: Parkview student brought unloaded gun to school A Parkview High student was arrested Thursday for bringing an unloaded gun to school, discovered after a classmate reported it. Administrators quickly located the student and found the firearm in their book bag. Principal David Smith assured parents that no threats or harm occurred but emphasized the seriousness of the incident, which violates school policy and the law. Officials urge parents to discuss the dangers of bringing weapons to school and encourage students to report concerns via text, the "GCPS Tips" app, or P3Campus.com/5105. Smith praised the community for prioritizing safety and vigilance. STORY 3: Legislation invites lawsuits against cities and schools that ignore immigration law The Georgia Senate Public Safety Committee advanced Senate Bill 21, which would allow lawsuits against school districts and governing bodies that violate state laws requiring cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The bill targets "sanctuary city" policies and mandates compliance with federal immigration detainer requests. Critics, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, warn it could lead to lawsuits against teachers, while the Georgia School Boards Association raised concerns about accusations triggering legal action. Supporters argue the bill enforces accountability by waiving sovereign immunity for noncompliance, potentially imposing financial penalties on violators. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL STORY 4: Raffensperger looking to feds to withdraw election lawsuit Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is urging the U.S. Attorney General to drop a federal lawsuit challenging Georgia's 2021 election reform law, Senate Bill 202. The law requires photo ID for absentee voting, limits ballot drop boxes, and restricts distributing food and drinks near polling lines. Democrats opposed the bill, leading to economic boycotts, including MLB relocating its 2021 All-Star game. Raffensperger called the lawsuit "frivolous," citing polls showing 98-99% of voters reported no issues voting in recent elections. He also accused the Biden administration of political motives in pursuing the case. STORY 5: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Receives $125K Grant from Publix Super Markets Charities Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity received a $125,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities to support building one of 11 homes planned for 2025. The nonprofit will construct homes in Monroe (including a Veteran Build), Lilburn, and Loganville to address the need for affordable housing in the area. Director of Philanthropy Jan Mayheu highlighted the grant's role in fostering strong communities and helping families achieve homeownership. The organization relies on donations, sponsorships, and volunteers to continue its mission. To get involved, contact Mayheu at 770-931-8080. Break 3: STORY 6: NFL ALUM: Norcross Dedicates Lorenzo Carter Strength and Conditioning Center Norcross High School honored NFL player Lorenzo Carter by naming its renovated weight room the Lorenzo Carter Strength and Conditioning Center. Carter, who starred in football and basketball at Norcross, expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized giving back to inspire future generations. With seven NFL seasons under his belt, Carter is currently a free agent but cherishes his time playing for his hometown Falcons. STORY 7: Norcross City Events Schedule 'Packed With Excitement' Norcross city officials promise an exciting 2025 with a packed lineup of events, including cultural fiestas, lively concerts, thrilling car shows, and festive holiday celebrations. The 1980's was a time when pop culture influenced the car scene. Nowhere better was this exemplified than the "Eliminator Bug" built by Tony Hunter out of Loganville, Georgia. Imagine being 18 years old and having your car on the cover of a nationally published magazine. Being one of the first guys from the southeast to get the cover of magazine and to have your girlfriend on that cover as well. Talk about living the dream! That is Tony Hunter's VW story. VW magazines have mostly been featuring the west coast scene, especially in the 1980s. Tony's "Eliminator Bug" broke that ceiling. Listen to the story of building your first car and getting so many accolades then selling it after showing it for several years. Where is it now? You'll hear all about that on this episode. www.letstalksubs.com www.vwtrendsmagazine.com www.rosswulf.com

A word from the founder: My name is Tara Fountain, and I am the founder of PURPLE Women, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. In 2011, the Lord led my family and I to Loganville, GA from CT. And I knew it was with great purpose and also knew I had to just be obedient and trust God in the unknown. So, about a year later, God started to birth a great passion within me for his daughters. I mean, this was a strong desire as if they were my daughters. He then gave me a vision of the mission, and my answer was devotedly YES! And it was like I experienced the birthing of a child, locking eyes with it, wanting to protect it, and felt an unspeakable feeling of joy. It was the best feeling I have ever felt in my life. I believe I even let out a scream of such excitement. It was truly a spiritual birthing experience. God then surrounded me with a group of women who believed in the mission and shared the same passion. We then started meeting and planning. I just knew this was about to take off. In the midst of God forming PURPLE Women, my husband wasn't having the same experience of GA as I was. He really started to miss family and CT. We then made the decision to go back to CT. This truly broke my heart. I have this group of women alongside me, ready to see the vision come to pass and I have to now tell them I'm leaving. I tried to make the best out of the situation by telling them nothing has to change, we can continue to move forward with everything and that I'll just be out of state and can do things from afar. Well, that didn't work. After returning back to CT, it only lasted about a month and everyone went their separate ways. It took a long talk with God and a lot of praying for me to come to peace with this situation. It wasn't long after returning home that my husband and I both realized that we wanted to return to GA. So, the plan was to get into a job that we could transfer to GA with. We did just that and fast forward 10 years, we had 2 cars filled driving back to GA. At this time, PURPLE Women was not in my thoughts or plans really. The desire was still there subconsciously but that's where it stayed. In January of 2022, I was sitting in my room on my bed writing down some goals and visions for the new year. I then started feeling those birthing pains again and I instantly was like, is this for real, are you sure Lord? With all types of emotions: doubt, fear, excitement, and joy all in one. But then I remembered my Yes, and then the confidence came and then the reassurance that I was chosen for this came. I then started to ask the Lord where do I start, do I reach out to the same women I was with before? I didn't feel led to reach back out to them. I then instantly felt in my spirit to start at women's shelters. I was like okay Lord you're going to have to talk with my husband about that one and give him peace with me going to women's shelters. Then I started researching women's shelters and Athens was coming up as I searched but still, nothing resonated with me. I then just told the Lord, you lead and I'll follow. During this time, I had started my health & life coaching business as well as my bath & body business. Which, led me to seek out vendor opportunities to market my businesses. I applied to several markets and shows. I then got accepted into Athens Farmers Market. I was very excited about this new journey and couldn't wait to start selling my products. So, on my second market day, this woman comes up to my table and starts having some small talk with my husband and I. I knew there was an agenda with her I just didn't know what. She then buys a product and then goes into telling us that she is going up to sing. The Athens Farmers Market has live entertainment. We said okay we'll be listening out for you. She sang beautifully. As the market was ending my husband went to go grab him and I something to drink and he had to pass the woman to get there. As he was passing her, she asked him to come over, so he did and she asks him "Do you think your wife would mind coming down to my women's shelter and speaking to the women?" My husband's face lit up and he came and told me, and I was blown away. I was like Lord you are something else. It was so divine and every time I visited her women's shelter myself and the women experienced the deep love that God has for his daughters. God had us planted at a church in Loganville, that was an hour away from where we lived. Jones' achievement not only earned her a place in the Olympics but also elevated her to the eighth spot on the all-time U.S. list for the event. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Georgia Gwinnett College's FAFSA center now open through Aug. 1 Georgia Gwinnett College's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Center will extend its operations until August 1 due to high demand. Since its launch in late April, the center, located conveniently on campus, has assisted over 400 students with their FAFSA applications. The FAFSA is crucial for determining federal aid eligibility, though the streamlined form introduced by the U.S. Department of Education in late 2023 has posed challenges. Kimberly Jordan, GGC's Executive Director of Financial Aid Services, highlighted the center's role not only in aiding applications but also in providing personalized support to students. The center remains committed to helping students start or continue their academic journey smoothly. STORY 5: One Man's Efforts to Stop Mulberry Cityhood Continues. What We Know. Stephen Hughes, an eastern Gwinnett resident, has filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia in Fulton County Superior Court, challenging the constitutionality of legislation that established the city of Mulberry and scheduled its city council elections. This marks Hughes' third active lawsuit related to Mulberry's cityhood. His attorney, Allen Lightcap, argues that Senate Bill 333, which crafted Mulberry's charter and set the cityhood referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. Hughes seeks declaratory and injunctive relief to halt the city council elections and prevent Governor Kemp from participating in any city transition. The core of Hughes' legal challenge focuses on provisions preventing Mulberry from levying property taxes and mandating specific municipal services, which he contends should be addressed through general legislation, not local mandates. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood assert these lawsuits are backed by developers opposing urban growth initiatives, following voter approval of the city in response to local development proposals. STORY 6: Community Fundraisers for New O'Kelly Memorial Library in Loganville The Friends of the O'Kelly Memorial Library group is actively fundraising to support the construction of a new library facility in Loganville, planned by the Azalea Regional Library System. With contributions from the state, Walton County, and Loganville totaling $5.7 million, the Friends group aims to raise an additional $2 million. This ambitious goal is crucial as the current library, recognized as Georgia's Library of the Year in 2021, has outgrown its 6,700-square-foot space. Challenges include insufficient room for programs and events, underscoring the need for the planned 12,000-square-foot facility which promises expanded services and community engagement opportunities. The Friends group recently received a $10,000 donation from Peach State Federal Credit Union, boosting their efforts towards this transformative project for Loganville. STORY 7: Supreme Court grants Trump partial immunity in Jan. 6 case The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, granted former President Trump significant immunity from criminal charges related to his actions during his presidency, effectively derailing a trial linked to the January 6 attack. While rejecting absolute immunity, the Court ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official acts performed while in office. This decision sends the case back to lower courts and likely postpones any trial until after the November election, where Trump hopes to regain the presidency. Critics argue this delay hampers accountability, while Trump continues to face legal battles in multiple jurisdictions, including delays in Georgia and a pending sentencing in a separate case related to hush money payments. We'll have final thoughts after this. Break 4: INGLES 10 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast.
