Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Suwanee Police Release Images Of Vehicle Involved In Fatal Hit-And-Run Suwanee Police are investigating a hit-and-run that killed 60-year-old David Wayne Anglin on Old Peachtree Road last month. Security footage shows a dark-colored sedan with dark rims speeding near the scene, now identified as a vehicle of interest. Police have released images and are seeking public help to identify the car and its occupants. Anyone with information or dash cam footage is urged to contact the investigating detective at 770-904-7650. STORY 2: Parkview student brought unloaded gun to school A Parkview High student was arrested Thursday for bringing an unloaded gun to school, discovered after a classmate reported it. Administrators quickly located the student and found the firearm in their book bag. Principal David Smith assured parents that no threats or harm occurred but emphasized the seriousness of the incident, which violates school policy and the law. Officials urge parents to discuss the dangers of bringing weapons to school and encourage students to report concerns via text, the "GCPS Tips" app, or P3Campus.com/5105. Smith praised the community for prioritizing safety and vigilance. STORY 3: Legislation invites lawsuits against cities and schools that ignore immigration law The Georgia Senate Public Safety Committee advanced Senate Bill 21, which would allow lawsuits against school districts and governing bodies that violate state laws requiring cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The bill targets "sanctuary city" policies and mandates compliance with federal immigration detainer requests. Critics, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, warn it could lead to lawsuits against teachers, while the Georgia School Boards Association raised concerns about accusations triggering legal action. Supporters argue the bill enforces accountability by waiving sovereign immunity for noncompliance, potentially imposing financial penalties on violators. We’ll be right back Break 2: 08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL STORY 4: Raffensperger looking to feds to withdraw election lawsuit Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is urging the U.S. Attorney General to drop a federal lawsuit challenging Georgia's 2021 election reform law, Senate Bill 202. The law requires photo ID for absentee voting, limits ballot drop boxes, and restricts distributing food and drinks near polling lines. Democrats opposed the bill, leading to economic boycotts, including MLB relocating its 2021 All-Star game. Raffensperger called the lawsuit "frivolous," citing polls showing 98-99% of voters reported no issues voting in recent elections. He also accused the Biden administration of political motives in pursuing the case. STORY 5: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Receives $125K Grant from Publix Super Markets Charities Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity received a $125,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities to support building one of 11 homes planned for 2025. Director of Philanthropy Jan Mayheu highlighted the grant's role in fostering strong communities and helping families achieve homeownership. The organization relies on donations, sponsorships, and volunteers to continue its mission. To get involved, contact Mayheu at 770-931-8080. Break 3: STORY 6: NFL ALUM: Norcross Dedicates Lorenzo Carter Strength and Conditioning Center Norcross High School honored NFL player Lorenzo Carter by naming its renovated weight room the Lorenzo Carter Strength and Conditioning Center. A word from the founder: My name is Tara Fountain, and I am the founder of PURPLE Women, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. In 2011, the Lord led my family and I to Loganville, GA from CT. And I knew it was with great purpose and also knew I had to just be obedient and trust God in the unknown. So, about a year later, God started to birth a great passion within me for his daughters. I mean, this was a strong desire as if they were my daughters. He then gave me a vision of the mission, and my answer was devotedly YES! And it was like I experienced the birthing of a child, locking eyes with it, wanting to protect it, and felt an unspeakable feeling of joy. It was the best feeling I have ever felt in my life. I believe I even let out a scream of such excitement. It was truly a spiritual birthing experience. God then surrounded me with a group of women who believed in the mission and shared the same passion. We then started meeting and planning. I just knew this was about to take off. In the midst of God forming PURPLE Women, my husband wasn't having the same experience of GA as I was. He really started to miss family and CT. We then made the decision to go back to CT. This truly broke my heart. I have this group of women alongside me, ready to see the vision come to pass and I have to now tell them I'm leaving. I tried to make the best out of the situation by telling them nothing has to change, we can continue to move forward with everything and that I'll just be out of state and can do things from afar. Well, that didn't work. After returning back to CT, it only lasted about a month and everyone went their separate ways. It took a long talk with God and a lot of praying for me to come to peace with this situation. It wasn't long after returning home that my husband and I both realized that we wanted to return to GA. So, the plan was to get into a job that we could transfer to GA with. We did just that and fast forward 10 years, we had 2 cars filled driving back to GA. At this time, PURPLE Women was not in my thoughts or plans really. The desire was still there subconsciously but that's where it stayed. In January of 2022, I was sitting in my room on my bed writing down some goals and visions for the new year. I then started feeling those birthing pains again and I instantly was like, is this for real, are you sure Lord? With all types of emotions: doubt, fear, excitement, and joy all in one. But then I remembered my Yes, and then the confidence came and then the reassurance that I was chosen for this came. I then started to ask the Lord where do I start, do I reach out to the same women I was with before? I didn't feel led to reach back out to them. I then instantly felt in my spirit to start at women's shelters. I was like okay Lord you're going to have to talk with my husband about that one and give him peace with me going to women's shelters. Then I started researching women's shelters and Athens was coming up as I searched but still, nothing resonated with me. I then just told the Lord, you lead and I'll follow. During this time, I had started my health & life coaching business as well as my bath & body business. Which, led me to seek out vendor opportunities to market my businesses. I applied to several markets and shows. I then got accepted into Athens Farmers Market. I was very excited about this new journey and couldn't wait to start selling my products. So, on my second market day, this woman comes up to my table and starts having some small talk with my husband and I. I knew there was an agenda with her I just didn't know what. She then buys a product and then goes into telling us that she is going up to sing. The Athens Farmers Market has live entertainment. We said okay we'll be listening out for you. She sang beautifully. As the market was ending my husband went to go grab him and I something to drink and he had to pass the woman to get there. As he was passing her, she asked him to come over, so he did and she asks him "Do you think your wife would mind coming down to my women's shelter and speaking to the women?" My husband's face lit up and he came and told me, and I was blown away. I was like Lord you are something else. It was so divine and every time I visited her women's shelter myself and the women experienced the deep love that God has for his daughters. God had us planted at a church in Loganville, that was an hour away from where we lived. At this church was women that was appointed to be destiny helpers for PURPLE Women, believing in the mission and sharing the same passion. Our Mission is to connect with and inspire women to live empowered lives through discovering and following God's predestined purpose to thrive as prudent, unique, reverent, powerful, loving, and esteemed women. And here is our vision; As women today, we are faced with the pressures to be perfect in our appearance, in our homes, and in the world around us. As we put our focus on this perfect image, we are masking what's truly going on. We are trying to cover up the hurt, loneliness, abandonment, divorce, loss, depression, oppression, abuse, rejection and uncertainties. Our goal at Purple Women is to teach women that our God is a God of restoration. He will restore every area of your life. Not to where it used to be, not to where you imagined it would be but to where it is predestined to be. Join us on this mission to restore all women, from young to the old, whom God loves so much! With the passion of God, we are on a mission to restore all of the King's daughters! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Ex-Boyfriend Charged With Murder In Pregnant Gwinnett Teen's Death Jesus Monroy, the ex-boyfriend of a pregnant Loganville teen, has been charged with serious offenses including malice murder, felony murder, feticide, and aggravated assault. The incident unfolded when 16-year-old Mia Campos was found dead in a wooded area off Stephens Road on July 15. Her family reported her missing the night before after she left home with an unidentified person and did not return. A subsequent autopsy confirmed her death as a homicide. Monroy initially faced charges for providing false information to police but was later implicated in Campos' murder. Authorities have not disclosed further details about Monroy or his possible motives. STORY 2: Arson Charges Filed After Fire Damages Lawrenceville Home In Lawrenceville, three people narrowly escaped a house fire on Iron Gate Court after a neighbor called 911 just before 9 p.m. on Saturday. The fire was determined to be intentionally set, originating in a rear ground-level room. A grandson of the homeowners is accused of starting the fire, allegedly seen fleeing with gas cans by a neighbor who detained him until police arrived. The suspect faces charges of arson and aggravated assault. Fortunately, the occupants were alerted by neighbors since their home lacked working smoke detectors. Fire crews arrived to find extensive damage, including a well-involved garage and significant damage throughout the house, but all occupants were safely outside. STORY 3: Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 66 hosts annual Cops and Kids Back-to-School Event   Despite rainy weather, the Gwinnett Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 66 hosted its annual Cops and Kids Back-to-School Event at Shoe Carnival in Lawrenceville Market this past Saturday. The event provided 75 local children with backpacks filled with school supplies and a new pair of shoes, all funded by donations from Gwinnett citizens and local businesses. Families in need, including those with financial limitations or children under Georgia's Medicaid, were able to apply for and participate in the event. Organizers emphasized the event's dual purpose of community outreach and ensuring children are prepared for the school year. They highlighted the emotional boost for children receiving new supplies and the positive interaction between police officers and the community. The event is part of the FOP's longstanding initiative to support local families, with plans for future events like the Cops and Kids Christmas event. He'll compete at the PBR Camping World Team Series event at Gas South Arena in Duluth, marking the series' debut in the city. Established in 2022, the PBR Team Series features regional teams like Taylor's Stampede, competing across various matchups culminating in a championship in Las Vegas. At 24, he plans to ride until around age 30, envisioning a future coaching or broadcasting within the sport. Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Buford Hall-of-Famer ‘Pop' Carson Battling End Stage Renal Disease   Michael "Pop" Carson, a prominent figure in Buford's sports history, is facing severe health challenges due to end-stage renal disease in central Florida. Carson, 63, played a crucial role in Buford's first state football championship in 1978 and later coached football and baseball for over 40 years. He launched a GoFundMe page to manage medical expenses, emphasizing gratitude for support. Despite health setbacks, including congestive heart failure, Carson remains hopeful and advocates for health awareness. His coaching career spanned various schools, impacting many students. Carson, known for his resilience, reflects on the importance of health and cherishes each day as a blessing. STORY 2: Here's Where to Celebrate Independence Day in Gwinnett County   From Stone Mountain Park to the charming streets of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County is gearing up for an electrifying Independence Day. We're bringing you the lowdown on all the must-see events that will light up the sky and your hearts. Whether you're into patriotic fireworks, live music, or simply want to soak up the festive atmosphere, there's something here for everyone. Let's dive into the lineup and get you prepped for an unforgettable celebration! First off, head to Stone Mountain Park from July 1 to July 7 for nightly fireworks and a spectacular Drone & Light Show. On July 3, Lawrenceville brings you "Prelude to the Fourth!" with music and food trucks, while Norcross hosts "Red, White & Boom!" with live music and fireworks at Lillian Webb Park. On Independence Day itself, don't miss Lilburn's "Sparkle in the Park" and Snellville's "Star Spangled Snellville" with games, music, and more fireworks. Plus, Braselton offers a parade and festival, and Coolray Field presents "Fourth on the Field" with a kids' movie and fireworks at 9:15 p.m. STORY 3: Olympic Qualifier: Greater Atlanta Christian Grad Makes U.S. Team Jasmine Jones, a Greater Atlanta Christian graduate, secured her spot on the U.S. Olympic team by finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles on Sunday. Competing just after her senior season at USC, Jones clocked a personal best of 52.77 seconds. She trailed Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who set a new world record at 50.65 seconds, and her USC teammate Anna Cockerell, who finished second with 52.64 seconds. Jones' achievement not only earned her a place in the Olympics but also elevated her to the eighth spot on the all-time U.S. list for the event. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Georgia Gwinnett College's FAFSA center now open through Aug. 1 Georgia Gwinnett College's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Center will extend its operations until August 1 due to high demand. Since its launch in late April, the center, located conveniently on campus, has assisted over 400 students with their FAFSA applications. The FAFSA is crucial for determining federal aid eligibility, though the streamlined form introduced by the U.S. Department of Education in late 2023 has posed challenges. Kimberly Jordan, GGC's Executive Director of Financial Aid Services, highlighted the center's role not only in aiding applications but also in providing personalized support to students. The center remains committed to helping students start or continue their academic journey smoothly. STORY 5: One Man's Efforts to Stop Mulberry Cityhood Continues. What We Know. Stephen Hughes, an eastern Gwinnett resident, has filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia in Fulton County Superior Court, challenging the constitutionality of legislation that established the city of Mulberry and scheduled its city council elections. This marks Hughes' third active lawsuit related to Mulberry's cityhood. His attorney, Allen Lightcap, argues that Senate Bill 333, which crafted Mulberry's charter and set the cityhood referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. Hughes seeks declaratory and injunctive relief to halt the city council elections and prevent Governor Kemp from participating in any city transition. The core of Hughes' legal challenge focuses on provisions preventing Mulberry from levying property taxes and mandating specific municipal services, which he contends should be addressed through general legislation, not local mandates. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood assert these lawsuits are backed by developers opposing urban growth initiatives, following voter approval of the city in response to local development proposals. STORY 6: Community Fundraisers for New O'Kelly Memorial Library in Loganville The Friends of the O'Kelly Memorial Library group is actively fundraising to support the construction of a new library facility in Loganville, planned by the Azalea Regional Library System. With contributions from the state, Walton County, and Loganville totaling $5.7 million, the Friends group aims to raise an additional $2 million. This ambitious goal is crucial as the current library, recognized as Georgia's Library of the Year in 2021, has outgrown its 6,700-square-foot space. Challenges include insufficient room for programs and events, underscoring the need for the planned 12,000-square-foot facility which promises expanded services and community engagement opportunities. The Friends group recently received a $10,000 donation from Peach State Federal Credit Union, boosting their efforts towards this transformative project for Loganville. STORY 7: Supreme Court grants Trump partial immunity in Jan. 6 case   The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, granted former President Trump significant immunity from criminal charges related to his actions during his presidency, effectively derailing a trial linked to the January 6 attack. While rejecting absolute immunity, the Court ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official acts performed while in office. This decision sends the case back to lower courts and likely postpones any trial until after the November election, where Trump hopes to regain the presidency. Critics argue this delay hampers accountability, while Trump continues to face legal battles in multiple jurisdictions, including delays in Georgia and a pending sentencing in a separate case related to hush money payments. We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 10 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, June 18th and Happy 81st Birthday to Beatles member Paul McCartney.   I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Leadership Gwinnett Alumni Hosting Ted Event Generations Expo Draws in Seniors on The Hunt For New Information Juneteenth is a Significant Date in African-American History. Here's Why All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Leadership Gwinnett Alumni Hosting Ted Event TEDxAlexanderPark, the second annual event featuring nearly a dozen speakers sharing "ideas worth spreading," will take place at the Gas South Theatre in Duluth on Saturday. Organized by Darryll Stinson, the event aims to inspire and empower with talks on diverse topics under the theme "Awe & Wonder." Speakers include notable figures like Jen Gottlieb and Carey Theil, covering subjects from media presence to ending dog racing. With a projected audience of 400 to 500 attendees, up from last year's 100, the event promises networking opportunities and global reach through live recordings. For more details and tickets, visit www.tedxalexanderpark.com. STORY 2: Generations Expo Draws in Seniors on The Huntt For New Information The Daily Post's annual Generations Expo drew over 400 attendees this year at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville, focusing on senior needs like home care, estate planning, and healthcare. Jennifer Montalvo, a regular attendee, finds valuable information each year and even discovered her primary care provider there. Organized with support from Northeast Georgia Health System and Publix, the expo features booths from healthcare providers, senior living facilities, and more. For longtime participants like Marrell and Velma Rice of Loganville, the expo offers a chance to connect with friendly experts and explore new services. The event also includes activities like Bingo, food trucks, and gift bags filled with useful items, enhancing its appeal to seniors seeking practical advice and community engagement. STORY 3: Juneteenth is a Significant Date in African-American History. Here's Why Shannon Singleton, a Loganville resident, has attended the Daily Post's Generations Expo for years, seeking educational resources about heritage and history for her children. Singleton, like many, only learned about Juneteenth when it became a federal holiday three years ago, highlighting gaps in historical education she experienced growing up in Louisiana. She praises the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett for their annual Juneteenth Celebration, held at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville, which educates about the holiday's significance in African-American history, marking the end of slavery. The event, featuring vendors, music, and cultural exhibits, underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth nationwide and globally. Additional Juneteenth events in Gwinnett County, like Norcross's celebration with performances and Snellville's Unity Day, further promote cultural awareness and unity across communities. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Surgeon General Calls for Warning Lables on Social Media Sites Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, has advocated for mandatory warning labels on social media platforms due to their potential harm to teens' mental health. He highlighted that adolescents spending over three hours daily on social media face heightened risks of anxiety and depression. Murthy likened these risks to other public health hazards like unsafe cars or contaminated food, urging swift action akin to past interventions such as cigarette warning labels. Despite teens' increasing social media use, congressional approval is required for such labels, with no current legislation introduced. Murthy emphasized the urgency of addressing these risks, urging parental vigilance and societal action to safeguard young people's well-being. STORY 5: Would Banning Vapes Lead to a Resurgence of Young People Smoking? A new study warns that banning disposable vapes could lead young people to revert to smoking tobacco, as they view smoking and vaping as interchangeable. Led by the University of East Anglia, the research highlights how disposable vapes have become popular among youth due to their affordability, accessibility, and appealing designs and flavors. Despite awareness of vaping's potential harms, many youths use it for stress relief and as a social activity. The study underscores the unintended consequences of strict regulations like bans or price hikes, which could drive young people to illicit vape markets or back to tobacco. STORY 6: Study Finds That if Your Mom Had Alzheimer's You're More Likely to Develop Dementia New research suggests that individuals whose mothers had Alzheimer's disease may be more likely to develop dementia due to increased levels of amyloid, a protein linked to the disease. This study, involving 4,400 cognitively unimpaired adults aged 65 to 85, found higher amyloid levels in those reporting maternal Alzheimer's symptoms. Both maternal history and paternal early-onset symptoms were associated with elevated amyloid. However, late-onset paternal history did not show this correlation. Researchers stress the importance of considering sex-specific parental history in identifying dementia risk and potential implications for future prevention trials. The study was led by Dr. Hyun-Sik Yang and collaborators at Mass General Brigham, Vanderbilt, and Stanford University. STORY 7: Many Parents say Anxiety Keeps Their Kids from Sleeping Well A new study involving 781 American parents of children aged one to six reveals that one in four parents find it challenging to get their child to sleep, with over a third of children waking up upset during the night. More than 40% of parents report their child ends up in their bed at night, and about three in ten children under seven insist on having a parent in their room. The study, conducted by the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, emphasizes the importance of consistent bedtime routines to mitigate sleep difficulties, such as anxiety delaying bedtime or night awakenings due to bad dreams. We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 4 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Last week, a jury convicted him on charges including aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. He received a life sentence plus 20 years and will be registered as a sex offender for life. The conviction followed a bench trial where he confessed to his involvement in trafficking drugs investigated in 2021. Prosecutors highlighted the efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Gwinnett County Police Narcotics Unit, in dismantling his criminal operation. Investigations revealed Smithson's activities through wiretaps and surveillance, leading to his arrest after a traffic stop where cocaine was found in his possession. This sentencing marks the end of a long history of drug-related convictions spanning 30 years. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized the community's safety with Smithson behind bars. STORY 3: Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's challenges In Gwinnett County's upcoming judicial races, candidates address pressing issues such as mental health in court proceedings and fairness in treatment. State Court Judge Shawn Bratton emphasizes civility and respect in the diverse community, while Deputy District Attorney Ramona Toole highlights the need to tackle case backlogs through proactive scheduling. In the Superior Court races, candidates stress equality and individualized approaches to justice. Juvenile Court Judge Rodney Harris advocates for equal treatment regardless of representation, while Magistrate Judge Kimberly Gallant supports treatment courts for accountability and recovery. In the race to replace retiring judges, candidates prioritize mental health support for defendants, with B. Thassanee "BT" Gutter-Parker proposing a comprehensive safety plan, Regina Matthews advocating for continued accountability court programs, and Tuwanda Rush Williams emphasizing intervention plans over incarceration for those with mental health diagnoses. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Georgia prison inmate pleads guilty in meth conspiracy Christopher David Johnson, aged 46, has pleaded guilty to leading a methamphetamine conspiracy while incarcerated in a Georgia prison. He faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison for distributing over 500 grams of meth. Johnson orchestrated the operation using multiple cellphones from prison, coordinating with accomplices through Facebook and text messages. His co-conspirator, Michael Paul Brown, was recently sentenced to 15 years for his involvement. The state budget includes $10.7 million for prison technology upgrades to prevent contraband smuggling. The U.S. DEA and law enforcement agencies from Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia investigated Johnson's case, with his guilty plea entered in federal court in Abingdon, Virginia. STORY 5: Emergency hearing on Mulberry cityhood referendum set for Thursday An emergency hearing has been scheduled by a Gwinnett Superior Court judge regarding a lawsuit aimed at halting the Mulberry cityhood referendum on the May 21 ballot. Filed by retiree Stephen Hughes, the lawsuit contends that key aspects of the proposed city's charter are unconstitutional, including limitations on property tax collection and specified city services. Hughes' attorney argues that the referendum would deceive voters, as the proposed city's structure faces legal challenges. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood, such as Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, denounce the lawsuit, alleging it is driven by special interest groups, possibly developers opposing the proposal. Citizens For Mulberry President Michael Coker maintains that cityhood enjoys community support and anticipates its passage, dismissing the lawsuit as a last-minute attempt to derail the referendum.
