In this episode, Jon Lombardo, Co-Founder of Evidenza, unpacks the counterintuitive truth about B2B buying behaviour. Drawing on research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, Jon reveals why most B2B marketers fundamentally misunderstand their audience. The 95-5 rule shows that 95% of potential buyers aren't in the market right now, which means the traditional focus on short-term lead generation is missing the bigger picture. Jon also explains how AI-powered synthetic research is transforming market intelligence, why B2B needs more brand building than B2C, and what marketers should do about it. If you're stuck chasing in-market buyers whilst your competitors build future demand, this conversation will change how you think about growth. Guest Introduction Jon Lombardo is Co-Founder of Evidenza, a synthetic AI market research platform that surveys AI-generated customer copies to build evidence-based marketing plans in hours rather than months. Previously, Jon was Head of Research at LinkedIn's B2B Institute, where he helped establish the 95-5 rule and commissioned pioneering research on how B2B brands grow. Key Topics The 95-5 rule: why 95% of B2B buyers are out of market at any given time, and why that matters more than the 5% who are ready to buyThe 11X rule: how B2B buying cycles are 11 times longer than B2C, making brand building even more critical in B2B than consumer categoriesThe evolution from the 60-40 rule to 95-5: how research with John Dawes from Ehrenberg-Bass Institute challenged conventional wisdom about marketing budget allocationMental and physical availability in B2B: creating brand-relevant memories that activate when buyers eventually come into the marketAI and synthetic research: how Evidenza uses AI to interview synthetic customers, delivering market research in hours that would traditionally take monthsBootstrapped growth: how Evidenza launched with paying customers from day one without venture capital, growing to over 100 clientsThe future of AI in marketing: why AI is underrated and will transform marketing beyond what most people imaginePractical applications: how to use AI for execution whilst keeping strategic thinking human Resources & Links People Mentioned: Mark Ritson - Marketing professor, columnist, and founder of Marketing Week Mini MBAJohn Dawes - Professor at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing ScienceLes Binet - Marketing effectiveness researcher and econometricianPeter Field - Marketing consultant and authorPeter Weinberg - Co-Founder of EvidenzaBrian Watroba - Co-Founder of EvidenzaJenny Romaniuk - Professor at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing ScienceRachel Kennedy - Professor at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing ScienceNicole Hartnett - Professor at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing ScienceByron Sharp - Professor of Marketing Science at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute Companies & Organisations: Evidenza - Synthetic AI market research platformEhrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science - The World's largest centre for research into marketingLinkedIn B2B Institute - Marketing think tank (Jon's former employer) Key Frameworks: The 95-5 Rule - Research on B2B buying behaviour shows that only 5% of buyers are in marketThe 11X Rule - How B2B buying cycles differ from B2CThe 60-40 Rule - Les Binet and Peter Field's framework for balancing brand building and sales activation Subscribe to the xG Weekly Newsletter for weekly insights on B2B growth across APAC:https://xgrowth.com.au/newsletter Contact & Credits Hosts: Shahin Hoda and Vinnie Romano Guest Jon Lombardo Produced by: Shahin Hoda and Alexander Hipwell Edited by: Alexander Hipwell Music by: Breakmaster Cylinder APAC's B2B Growth Podcast is Presented by xGrowth
At the beginning of this Thanksgiving week. I wanted to take just a few minutes to share with you my five greatest sources of gratitude right now, and a little bit about why they're so significant. We're living in a time when it feels really hard to operate from a place of gratitude. There's a lot going on that is just not good for humans. And it's hard. Nonprofit leaders in particular are feeling super stressed and under attack in a lot of ways, and we're watching attacks on members of our communities. There's a lot of really bad, scary stuff going on. In the middle of all that, it becomes much too easy to lose sight of what's good in the world. But it's the good stuff that keeps us going. It's the good stuff that gives us a reason to stay in the fight. And to show up for all the people who matter to us, and to whom we matter. Those of us who are lucky enough to work in the Nonprofit universe, a lot of us are here because we feel called to this work. Whether we're in direct service or advocacy or doing both at the same time, it's a labor of love. We do this because we care. So when we find ourselves being pulled away from awareness of that and being sucked into the vortex of doom, I think it's really important to take a step back and take a little inventory of all of the things that motivate and inspire us, that recharge us, and that keep us going and keep us sane. In this episode, I'm sharing:What I'm doing (and not doing) to stay sane in crazy timesWhy I'm seeking out people who challenge me and help me grow – and the amazing results that's creating for me and my clientsThe valuable perspective shift we can take from animalsThe unexpected advocates who are emerging as a powerful source of inspiration for meMy Thanksgiving wish for you Interested in joining my new coaching program as a Founding Member? Have you ever looked at someone online and wondered how they built such a confident, consistent presence, one that feels real, effortless, and impossible to ignore? The truth is, it doesn't start with followers or fancy marketing. It starts with clarity, courage, and the decision to show up when no one's watching.5 years ago, I walked away from my business, my marriage ended, and I was emotionally and financially stretched. The idea of showing up online, sharing my story, my face, and my voice terrified me. But I started small, writing about property management, leadership, and mindset. Those early posts grew into courses, a thriving done-for-you services business, and this podcast. In this episode, I share how I built an iconic online presence from scratch, no followers, no marketing plan, just consistency and connection. You'll learn the exact steps I used to grow my personal brand online, build trust through authentic content, and use digital marketing strategies that attract the right clients. ”Iconic online presence is about being recognisable, relatable, and real. It's about building trust before you ever make a sale. It's about showing up as you, with a clear message, a consistent voice and content that actually connects. Because if people don't know who you are, they can't work with you..” - Kylie WalkerWe cover:What building an iconic online presence in property management really means and how to stand out with authenticityThe 5 essential steps to grow your personal brand and attract more management leads onlineHow to create a clear and confident brand message that positions you as a trusted industry expertWhy consistency and visibility are key to successful property management marketingHow to create authentic content that builds trust, drives engagement, and converts clientsThe importance of having a strong website and online hub that acts as your digital home base where people learn about you, your services, and how to work with youSimple AI tools and automation systems to save time and streamline your marketingThe mindset shifts that help you overcome imposter syndrome and confidently show up onlineJoin my new Course - DIGITAL AND AI ACADEMY

In this episode of Generation AI, hosts Ardis Kadiu and JC Bonilla examine the widely misinterpreted MIT report claiming "95% of GenAI pilots fail," exploring why this headline misses the real story. While individual employees are finding significant value with AI tools (90% use personal AI regularly), organizations struggle to capture this value at the enterprise level—not because the technology doesn't work, but due to change management, leadership alignment, and implementation challenges. Through Element451's own QBR automation struggles, the hosts illustrate how the gap between impressive demos and measurable business impact stems from organizational readiness, not technological limitations. They discuss why vendor solutions succeed at twice the rate of internal builds (67% vs 33%), introduce Forward Deployed Engineers as the bridge between technology and business context, and explain why back office automation delivers higher ROI than marketing despite budget allocation. This conversation provides practical guidance for higher education leaders on moving from shadow AI productivity gains to true enterprise transformation, emphasizing that the challenge isn't whether AI works—it's how organizations need to evolve to capture its value.AI Deployment Reality Check: The 95% Failure Rate (00:01:35)MIT report reveals 95% of GenAI pilots fail to deliver P&L impactOnly 5% achieve rapid revenue growthDiscussion of how this mirrors Element451's internal experiencesThe difference between pilots, POCs, and actual productsThe Shadow AI Phenomenon (00:02:43)90% of employees using personal AI tools vs enterprise subscriptionsBottom-up adoption through consumer tools like ChatGPTWhy organizations can't measure or control individual productivity gainsThe challenge of enterprise AI adoption vs consumer AIBuilding vs Buying: The Success Rate Gap (00:03:34)Internal build success rate: 33%Vendor purchase success rate: 67%Why vertical solutions outperform generic toolsThe importance of domain expertise in AI deploymentElement's QBR Case Study: When AI Projects Struggle (00:14:18)Quarterly Business Review automation challengesThe gap between data analytics and expert interpretationWhy AI needs embedded best practices and rubricsThe difference between finding patterns and implementing expertiseMarketing vs Back Office: Where Real ROI Lives (00:24:10)Over 50% of AI budgets go to sales and marketingWhy back office automation delivers higher returnsThe binary nature of workflow automation successExamples: fraud detection, application review, transcript analysisThe Forward Deployed Engineer Model (00:35:56)Origin from Palantir's government contractsHow OpenAI uses FDEs for enterprise clientsThe hybrid role: technical expertise + business understandingWhy traditional consultants can't fill this gapThe Unicorn Problem: Finding AI Operations Specialists (00:41:24)Scarcity of people who understand both workflows and AI technologyWhy agencies need to evolve their business modelsThe opportunity for innovative consultanciesElement's challenge in scaling deployment expertiseKey Recommendations for Institution Leaders (00:45:18)Move from bottom-up to top-down AI strategyProperly resource AI initiatives (not just IT side projects)Buy rather than build for 2x success rateLook for vertical solutions with deep domain knowledgeInclude internal champions in deployment projectsFinal Thoughts: Moving Beyond Productivity to Transformation (00:49:31)The shift from individual productivity to enterprise ROIWhy POC success doesn't equal business impactThe importance of AI workflow coverageAccepting that most organizations aren't behind—everyone is struggling - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Ardis Kadiuhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ardis/https://twitter.com/ardisDr. JC Bonillahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jcbonilla/https://twitter.com/jbonillxAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:Generation AI is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. I even share a personal story about selling my property management business. And guess what? I still get messages and calls from clients asking for advice on tenant selection, pricing, and more. Why? Because I built relationships, not just completed transactions. When you focus on connection and care, those relationships stick, no matter where life or business takes you.I walk you through the five key touchpoints of the customer journey—attraction, lead nurturing, onboarding, engagement, and advocacy. These are the moments that really matter, where trust is built and loyalty is earned. I share practical ways to stand out from the start, nail your onboarding process, and keep communication flowing.
