In 1954, Dr Heinz Lehmann published the first clinical article on the use of chlorpromazine. Chlorpromazine was the first synthetic drug used to control states of mania and psychomotor excitement, marking the birth of modern psychopharmacology. Seventy years later, the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology is highlighting the anniversary of Dr Lehmann's publication. The January-February 2024 issue of the journal includes a guest editorial that offers a brief history lesson on Dr Lehmann's contributions. The authors of the editorial are Drs. Pablo Dutra, Richard Balon, and Antonio E. Nardi. In this podcast, the authors of the editorial are joined by a distinguished group of JCP Editorial Board members to discuss Dr. Lehmann's research and the many profound ways the research environment has changed in the past 70 years. Along with the authors, the podcast participants are Drs. Carl Salzman, Alan Schatzberg, Leslie Citrome, Matthew Byerly, John Davis, and Anthony Rothschild. Dr Julia Koretski, Digital Editor for JCP, leads the discussion. The guest editorial is published in the January-February 2024 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, in an article titled "Celebrating 70 Years of the First Publication on Antipsychotic Treatment in North America by Heinz E. In 1988, Sevda left home after a painful childhood, and within six months was experiencing what she was told at the time was a mental health condition. Which was moderate, until she was 26 (1998) which then until she was 34 (2006),  basically became very serious, took over every aspect of my life. At points, I had a drug addiction running alongside that. The only way I can explain how I felt: 1. I felt I had lost my soul, 2. I had no idea why I was on this planet, 3. I had no idea what my soul calling was. I took a massive overdose in 2006, of 800 Chlorpromazine (a major tranquilizer) and when I woke up from the eight-week coma, I thought I had died, and then I was in the hospital for a few weeks, and out of the blue, I became mentally well, from out of nowhere seemingly. I decided to commit to my life, a lifetime of continual, constant spiritual growth. Since that day, I haven't taken any medication, and have been mentally well. I know that, until my overdose and coma, I was traveling through a "Dark Night of the Soul", and after this, I entered a spiritual awakening, and I'm a very intuitive woman, I don't have all the answers, but I have certainly walked the walk, and can help you through the process. You may not even know that you are experiencing the Dark Night of the Soul, or a spiritual awakening. It may look like: 1. Your life has not been easy, 2. You're powerful, 3. Intelligent, 4. Get bored easy, 5. Not interested in small talk, 6. You don't know why you're here, 7. You may not really know who you are, 8 You may not know you're soul's purpose. In the first half of the 20th century, most mentally ill patients were locked away in psychiatric hospitals and asylums. Those suffering from severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia, were often sedated or restrained. Shock therapies were standard treatments. Then in France in the 1950s, a new drug was discovered which dramatically reduced psychotic symptoms in many patients. It was called Chlorpromazine. Soon it was being used around the world. Alex Last has been speaking to the psychiatrist Dr Thomas Ban, emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, who witnessed the introduction of Chlorpromazine first-hand in the 1950s.
