From 1987-89, Steve Spurrier was the head coach at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to an ACC Football Championship in 1989. As a player, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966 at the University of Florida. Coach Spurrier then returned to Florida as its coach in 1990. Known as an offensive mastermind, Spurrier led the Gators to multiple SEC titles, as well as the national championship in 1997. Spurrier has deep connections to both Carolinas, because after Florida and a 2-year stint with Washington's NFL team, Spurrier came to South Carolina, where he was the head coach of the Gamecocks for a decade, beating Clemson five straight times at one point, before abruptly retiring in the middle of the 2015 season. Former captain and defensive lineman Mike Ramsay took some time from his Saturday morning to talk to us about his current life, his college and pro football career and the start of his fiancé's legal career. One fun fact - he played for the Orlando Apollos and Coach Spurrier! Mike played at Duke from 2013-2017 and experienced a lot of great moments in Blue Devils football history. We covered those along with the injury-riddled 2016 season and the up-and-down 2017 season. And before you ask, yes, we talked about Miami. You've been warned. Beyond the football talk, we had an interesting discussion about financial literacy, the social issues that are tied into our education system and we get into one of the most informative history podcasts ever, the Revolutions Podcast series on The Haitian Revolution. If you're not interested in this discussion, just skip over 8:53-17:12. I enjoyed our talk, but understand that some of you may be here for just the football. If you don't want to listen, that's fine - skip past it. Don't blow me up with negative emails, Twitter mentions and the like. Going back to Haiti's revolution, the first episode can be found here. I can't recommend this series, and the entire Revolutions Podcast, enough. (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ATG-Kevin.png) Kevin had an outstanding football career playing 12 years professionally in the NFL. He was drafted by the Rams, and also played for the Titans, Dolphins and Buccaneers. He was a late starter, having not played football until high school. His parents wanted to protect his young body from the physical demands of football so he played other sports growing up. He developed into a star player and was wanted by pretty much every school in the nation. Academics was important to him in his selection of a school so his choice came down to Notre Dame and Florida. He was ready to commit to Notre Dame, however Coach Spurrier convinced him to join him and attend the University of Florida. He had an outstanding career at Florida and was a top prospect in the 1995 draft. He ended up going 6th overall to the Rams and experienced a whirl-wind of travel right after the draft. He was drafted the year the Rams moved from LA to St. Louis, so there was a lot of transition for him. Luckily for him, his mom was there to help him and she took care of many of the details involved in his transition to pro football. His first sack in the NFL was a memorable one, as he earned it against the legendary Brett Favre. He earned the game ball that day and still has the ball in his memorabilia collection. Coach Dick Vermeil addressed the team when he took over and told them that they would win a Championship in 3 years. They achieved that goal, winning Super Bowl XXIV in one of the most memorable finishes in Super Bowl history! After football he transitioned into broadcasting, however he wasn’t sure that’s what he wanted to do. He initially started in the speaker circuit, doing talks around the Country. He did a few other things as well but didn’t find fulfilment from it. His agent suggested that he try broadcasting, and after finally deciding to give it a try, he loved it. He started with ESPN but is now working with CBS Sports. He also does work with his foundation, The Kevin Carter Foundation, which he started back in 2001. Oscar Collazos' parents made love sometime in the early spring of 1978. He lived inside of my mother’s womb until he was evicted by her inability to keep having him mooch off of her, or in other words, nature. Oscar lived in Cali, Colombia until 1986 when his family moved to Plantation, Florida – the most magical place on earth. Oscar attended Plantation High School where he was on the football team and step team. He wanted a Caprice Classic. After high school Oscar attended the University of Florida, where he attending Coach Spurrier's meeting for potential walk on players. During his last year at UF, Oscar interned at Late Night with Conan O’Brien where he gained the motivation to get into comedy. For the last 15 years Oscar has traveled the world spreading his twisted views, unique humor, and crazy immigrant family stories. Oscar has been featured on XM/Sirius Radio and appeared on ESPN and Comedy Central commercials as well as smaller roles in movies and television. You can find him entertaining audiences inside comedy clubs and all the way to legendary places like the Apollo Theater as well as working alongside comedy greats such as Tracy Morgan, Daniel Tosh, Bruce Bruce and many others, including John Moses who makes a special guest appearance on this podcast. Professionally trained at the prestigious Upright Citizens Brigade, Oscar is an excellent improviser who has gone on to win multiple comedy contests – most recently the Seminole Hard Rock Casino Comedian’s Ball in Southwest Florida that featured a $7,000 first-place prize.
