What if the world's most connected tech investor handed you his mental playbook? Elad Gil, an investor behind Airbnb, Stripe, Coinbase and Anduril, flips conventional wisdom on its head and prioritizes market opportunities over founders. Elad decodes why innovation has clustered geographically throughout history, from Renaissance Florence to Silicon Valley, where today 25% of global tech wealth is created. We get into why he believes AI is dramatically under-hyped and still under-appreciated, why remote work hampers innovation, and the self-inflicted wounds that he's seen kill most startups. This is a masterclass in pattern recognition from one of tech's most consistent and accurate forecasters, revealing the counterintuitive principles behind identifying world-changing ideas. Disclaimer: This episode was recorded in January. The pace of AI development is staggering, and some of what we discussed has already evolved. But the mental models Elad shares about strategy, judgment, and high-agency thinking are timeless and will remain relevant for years to come. In this episode, the philosopher Brendan Graham Dempsey joins Gregg to talk about his new book, A Universal Learning Process. It is the first installment of a larger work on The Evolution of Meaning. The book frames the complexification in the universe across the arc of cosmic evolution from the Big Bang to present as a kind of learning that goes through phases. Grounded in the ontology provided by the Tree of Knowledge System and Periodic Table of Behavior, the book charts this evolution starting with Energy and Information and then frames the complexification in Matter as “structural learning,” in Life as “genetic learning,” in Mind as “cognitive learning,” and in Culture as “symbolic learning.” Ultimately, the book culminates on the implications for what is sacred. ℹ️ - - - Find out more about Brendan Graham Dempsey - - - ℹ️ Book: The Evolution of Meaning - A Universal Learning Process Press | Sky Meadow Institute Homepage: https://www.brendangrahamdempsey.com/ ℹ️ - - - Find out more about Gregg Henriques - - - ℹ️ Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/gregg-henriques-phd Medium: https://gregghenriques.medium.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/henriqgx

We're often told to listen to recordings of music that we're working on. And we often tell our students to do so as well, but is there any research which suggests that this benefits the learning process in any way? A 2012 study takes a look at this question, and compares both active and passive listening to see what sorts of benefits there might (or might not) be:Get all the nerdy details here:Does Listening to Music Benefit the Music Learning Process?* * *Have you ever wondered why it is exactly that things often sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. It's 100% free, takes only 4 minutes, and you'll get a downloadable PDF with a personalized breakdown of where you stand in six key mental skill areas. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton and Bruce Dahlgren, CEO of Anthology and trustee at Stetson University, explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education. They discuss the parallels between human and AI development, address ethical concerns, and provide actionable recommendations for college and university leaders looking to integrate AI effectively. Podcast Overview Understanding AI's Learning Process and Addressing Concerns § AI systems, like humans, accumulate knowledge and experiences to grow smarter over time. § Natural language models like GPT now draw upon neural networks with over 1.7 trillion parameters, enabling sophisticated outputs. § Occasional "hallucinations" in AI outputs are a result of drawing upon mismatched patterns and will decrease with more data exposure. § Proper data, training, and policy frameworks can mitigate risks of AI misuse in higher education. Piloting AI as a Faculty Productivity Tool § AI-powered "design assistants" streamline course preparation, saving faculty significant time. § 94% of faculty in a pilot study reported substantial time savings using AI assistants. § Faculty remain in control, reviewing and approving AI outputs before use. § Time saved allows faculty to dedicate more energy to working directly with students. Developing a Proactive AI Policy Framework § University leaders should craft clear AI policy frameworks defining supported tools, guardrails, and benefits to students. § Gathering input from faculty senates, administrators, and trustees helps develop policies with broad support. § The goal is to help faculty build practical, adoptable policies and frameworks. Empowering Staff and Administrators with AI § AI can predict enrollment likelihood, target personalized communications, and boost yield. § Demographic analysis helps universities understand the demand for new programs or facilities. § AI chatbots provide 24/7 student assistance while machine learning optimizes campus operations. Three Key Recommendations for Higher Ed Leaders Immerse yourself in new AI technologies and consider applications across all university functions. Use shared governance to surface concerns, build consensus, and codify responsible AI usage policies. Leverage technology to drive student success and support their growth and development. By embracing AI as a performance tool thoughtfully and transparently, with the student experience at the center, colleges and universities can significantly improve institutional performance and student outcomes. The synergies between human and computer intelligence pave the way for incredible advancements in the years ahead. Today's podcast features Paul Cater, a seasoned strength coach with extensive experience in both professional and private realms. Beginning his journey in collegiate football at UC Davis, Paul later ventured into international professional rugby with the London Wasps for seven years. Following his rugby career, he spent a decade innovating strength and conditioning systems in professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels. With a research focus on performance and injury reduction in Seville, Spain, Paul now optimizes training methods for the tactical community and is designing "The Lab Monterey," a premier 'smart gym' in the USA. While training is often regarded as both an art and a science, the majority of time and resources are allocated to the scientific aspects, leaving the artistic elements overlooked. The art of training extends beyond communication with athletes, delving into the intuitive process of session unfolding and the natural processes of learning, movement, and community engagement. In today's podcast, Paul explores the alignment of performance with natural learning, emphasizing challenge and mimicry over verbal statements and rote recital of patterns. He details how to create an environment that breathes life into training sessions, fostering engagement, enhanced learning, and improved results. The discussion also covers the role of science in the context of "smart gyms" and how technology can liberate coach resources for more creative investments. In a rapidly evolving world, this podcast is a landmark exploration of understanding athletes and fostering a meaningful coaching process.
