Send us a textWhat happens when a non-veterinarian takes the helm of a veterinary practice? In this chat, Tom Dinwiddie reveals how his business background and people-first approach have transformed Wanganui Veterinary Services and Vets on Carlton into genuine Employers of Choice in New Zealand's veterinary landscape. At the heart of Tom's management philosophy lies a refreshing commitment to autonomy and accountability. "We allow people to make their own decisions and work autonomously," he explains, sharing real examples of team members who've flourished under this approach—from the young vet who researched and recommended dental X-ray equipment to the reserved nurse who blossomed into a confident leader. This trust extends to equipment needs and continuing education, with the practice generously supporting veterinarians' professional interests, whether in advanced dentistry, ultrasound techniques, or orthopaedic surgery.Beyond the clinic walls, Tom paints a vivid picture of Whanganui as "New Zealand's best-kept secret"—a place where veterinary professionals can truly have it all. With affordable housing, excellent schools, and boundless outdoor adventures from river kayaking to mountain climbing, the area offers the quintessential New Zealand lifestyle without the constraints of big-city living. The clinic's success in integrating international veterinary skills is exemplified by Hein, a Dutch veterinarian who joined after falling in love with the Whanganui River during a kayak trip and has now built a life and orthopaedic skills there over ten years. For veterinary professionals contemplating their next career move, this conversation presents a compelling alternative to the traditional vet-owned practice model—one where personal and professional growth go hand in hand, all within one of New Zealand's most liveable communities. One figured this would be a high-scoring night, given how the Indiana Pacers have arguably the best offensive team in the NBA all season, the Lakers have morphed over the course of the year into a juggernaut in their own right, and neither team should brag about their defenses of late. Yes, the Lakers were without D'Angelo Russell, but still, there's plenty of firepower to go around in L.A. But even by those standards, this 150-145 Lakers win was an insane shootout. Four Lakers with 25+ points. 26 for Spencer Dinwiddie, starting in D'Lo's spot and having the best game of his purple and gold tenure. (On the heels of what had been his best L.A. game Friday against the Sixers.) 36 points for Anthony Davis, who made 15 of 21 shots and pulled down 16 rebounds just for fun. Even the Lakers' typically barren bench, led by Taurean Prince's 14 points, was respectably prolific. Of course, the Pacers got in on the act as well, with Pascal Siakam exploding for 27 second-half points (36 in all), Myles Turner chipping in 20 and the team going 50 percent from distance. Indiana also outscored the Lakers 46-34 in the fourth quarter, including a late flurry of threes to make things very tense down the stretch. (To say the Lakers' late fourth quarter pick-and-roll defense got scrambled would be a grand understatement.) But in the end, the Lakers pulled off the victory, which combined with a Warriors loss, has them sitting at the nine seed 2.5 games ahead of Golden State, and 2.5 behind Dallas/Sacto. A challenging but still winnable road trip awaits, and it would be nice to see the Lakers really put away a quality opponent. But the bottom line is they're stacking wins of late, and at least giving themselves a shot at climbing the standings as the season reaches its end. It was not exactly the sort of inspired, confidence building effort the Lakers probably hoped for, but in the end it was enough for LA to get what it needed—a win. They beat the visiting, and badly slumping, Philadelphia 76ers 101-94 Friday night at the Crypt. The game was tight throughout, until down the stretch when the Lakers pushed the pedal down a little harder than the Sixers could manage. There were some notable performances, starting with Anthony Davis and his 23/19 line. Spencer Dinwiddie had his best game as a Laker (by a lot), playing high end defense while chipping in with 11 points in 23 minutes. There were even more subpar ones, however. LeBron James was inefficient and a turnover machine (TK overall). D'Angelo and Rui Hachimura weren't exactly models of consistent production, either. Outside of Dinwiddie's points, the Lakers had only five more from the bench. And they turned the ball over 28,502 times. Ok, it was only 21, but that's a lot, and it's what kept a vastly inferior team in the game. But, in the end, the Lakers go tthe win they needed, and even gained a game on Golden State after the Warriors took a surprising home loss to the Pacers (who will be in LA to face the Lakers on Sunday). Every bit of breathing room over the Warriors in the 9/10 battle matters, and meanwhile the Lakers kept the dream of moving up alive. In the spirit of that other big basketball event happening around the country, survive and advance. It's a day of problems, here at Locked On Lakers. On Wednesday's show, the the long run of injuries was a major focus, with a lot of attention paid to sorting out who might be coming back from injury and when, and what that means for the Lakers as they try to win games. For today, there is some injury-related news—Cam Reddish practiced Wednesday and is expected to be back for Friday's game against Philadelphia, giving the Lakers some badly needed defensive presence and size on the wing—but the conversation turned towards the guys who take care of the players. This year has been very problematic for the team, outside of the two guys (LeBron James, Anthony Davis) who everyone expected would miss a ton of games. Of course, those guys have their own dudes responsible for their health... which could point more towards the training staff, because seemingly everyone else on the roster has been busted and broken throughout the year. On the other, James and Davis have long had their own guys, and have struggled mightily to stay on the floor in the seasons prior to this one. So many guys seem to have come back from injuries, only to have to sit down again. Or start off with something that is might seem relatively minor or short term, and three weeks later that same player is going under the knife. Is that a misdiagnosis? Or just the right-minded effort to try and make the player better without surgical intervention? It can feel like the Lakers don't have the best of the best, even if it's hard to pinpoint exactly what the shortcomings are. Certainly by reputation the Lakers aren't known for spending big in support areas. Meanwhile, Spencer Dinwiddie says he's being graded on a Dinwiddie-sized set of expectations, but is playing a Reggie Bullock type role. Is he right? HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Do the Lakers have a problem with their training staff? SEGMENT 2: How do you know if a training staff is good? Remember when the Lakers had a terrible, terrible offense, and the only way they could score was in transition or at the free throw line? Well, that's not an issue anymore. The Lakers have, particularly since reconfiguring the starting lineup (again), been one of the best offensive teams in the NBA. In every category that matters, and it's not something fueled by what some critics call "junk" offense. (Meaning, living at the line.) Over their last 15 games, the Lakers have posted the following: 121.4 ppg (4th)offensive rating 119.8 (2nd)52.5% FG (1st)39.8 3PT% (4th)... which makes their 29th 3PA especially egregious. Why won't they take more?61.5 points in the paint per game (1st)15.3 fast break points per game (9th)4th for unassisted 3PTs -10th turnovers per game (12.7, just 1.1 off from leading the league)9th for Turnover %This is good work. And its with the bench producing virtually nothing, as of late. The main source (by expectation, at least) of scoring would be Spencer Dinwiddie, but he's not been giving the Lakers points to speak of. But why? Dinwiddie has said he's just trying to fit in on a team with a well-established pecking order. But maybe he's trying a little too hard? His usage rating is lower than Jaxson Hayes, who isn't allowed to dribble. Can the Lakers get him going? Are there other signs, though, that the Lakers might have a good team buried under a relatively mediocre record? Is the schedule finally opening up? And why, oh why, couldn't the Lakers have hired statue makers who can proofread their work? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers offense is on fire. Why? Will it last? SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers fix Spencer Dinwiddie? SEGMENT 3: Seriously, who proofread the Kobe statue? The Lakers, don't look now, have started to put some wins together. Seven of 10 now, factoring in Tuesday's 125-111 win over the Pistons at the Crypt. The starting lineup that swapped Rui Hachimua for Taurean Prince, has won five straight. The offense is flying around, the passing has elevated and turnovers are trending in the right direction. So with that in mind, and with the addition of Spencer Dinwiddie (who made his Lakers debut Tuesday), is there reason to crank up the optimism around the squad? Especially if Dinwiddie plays like he did in Dallas, there's every reason to believe he'll make a significant difference for a squad that needs more ball handling. Joining in to break it all down is Darian Vaziri, host of Locked On Clippers and the DimeDropper empire (search it out on YouTube). What accounts for the turnaround? Is it important for the Lakers to lean into a new identity, built more around big offense than lockdown defense? What kind of impact will Dinwiddie have, particularly as the Western Conference gets rougher and rougher. The Lakers, at 7-3 over their last 10, have played well but not actually gained any real ground in the conference. Meanwhile, there seems to be two tiers of squads. But even if one team has a gaudy record, do they have a kryptonite a little lower in the standings? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers beat Detroit, and are starting to put wins together. SEGMENT 2: The impact of Dinwiddie. SEGMENT 3: How do the Lakers stack up against the West? Monday we reacted to the weekend signing of guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Today, it's a deeper dive into what exactly Dinwiddie can bring to the Lakers, with Adam Armbrecht, host of Locked on Nets and a man present for both of Dinwiddie's stints in Brooklyn. He's a guy with tremendous variance in his output, often seemingly tied to the context in which he's playing. Is it an environment where winning is an option? Is he surrounded by players that can enhance his skill set, and limit his usage to appropriate levels (therefore boosting efficiency)? Are the Lakers, right now, that kind of team? Armbrecht answers those questions, and more, breaking down what kind of defender Dinwiddie can be as well. How might he fit with a Lakers backcourt that has struggled, particularly at the point of attack? Dinwiddie doesn't have much of a reputation on that side of the ball, but is that entirely fair? What are his strengths and weaknesses, and how might they be revealed on a team with LeBron James and Anthony Davis? It's a great breakdown of a critical addition for the team as it heads into the All Star break. Plus, what exactly kept those other rumored deals with Brooklyn (Dorian Finney-Smith? Royce O'Neale?) from happening? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Adam Armbrecht SEGMENT 1: Dinwiddie on offense. SEGMENT 2: Dinwiddie on D, plus post-deadline talk. The Lakers didn't make a deal at Thursday's trade deadline, but that doesn't mean they didn't ultimately improve the team. Over the weekend, they made the signing of former Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie official. The Lakers will have to figure out how they want to deploy him at a position of relative strength (at least among the starters) but he'll provide badly needed depth in the backcourt, and allow Darvin Ham to always have a true PG on the floor at all times. It could, as well, let Austin Reaves lean harder into the things he's best at, and not have to invest quite as much energy in operating the offense effectively. Does Dinwiddie improve the defense? The perimeter shooting? Not materially, but he will allow the Lakers to lean into strengths, and that could make just as much of a difference. What about the rest of the buyout market? Are there players available (or expected to become available) that would be worth adding? Even if it means cutting a player? Finally, how does all of this potentially impact the perception of what the team has been doing? Signing Dinwiddie is a good move, but does it make up for the inaction at the deadline? (In the mind of LeBron, because really that's what we're talking about, right?) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers sign Spencer Dinwiddie. What impact will he have?
