I think I've mentioned on here before, I raised four daughters, and so today's topic is Transformers. And none of my daughters were ever into Transformers as a toy. I was beyond toys when Transformers, I think first came around. So I've never even really jumped into the movies. But big, big brand. Stephen Semple: Huge brand. Dave Young: Tell me how they got started. Stephen Semple: Well, and the interesting thing, I almost included my oldest daughter, Crystal, in the recording of this, and I decided that, no, we might do a follow-up episode with her because she is a massive Transformers fan. Dave Young: Wow. Okay. Stephen Semple: And the interesting thing is she never played with them as a kid, but she found herself into the fandom. And today there's a whole thing I want to do about fandoms because it really speaks to the role that social media plays with a lot of companies. Dave Young: I feel like as a kid, I would've loved them. Stephen Semple: Because there's this unbelievably rich storyline behind Transformers that is incredible. And then it's actually one that is fragmented into the Michael Bay Transformers storyline versus the historic ones, because Michael Bay is the one who made the movies. It's this crazy world when you dig into it. But, the story of Transformers is actually a story of a battle between two decent-sized companies. So it's not normally what we do, but it was so interesting, I thought we got to talk about this because it's a story about a battle between Tonka and Hasbro. Dave Young: Oh, man. Just like Wonka and the other guy. Yeah. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Today the Transformers franchise, I think is a $25 billion franchise between the movies and the toys. It is massive. And the story goes back to we're in July of 1983, and Tonka is struggling for a new hit. Tonka is being run by Steve Shank, and they're like $10 million in the hole, and they're known for trucks. And think back to the '80s, what's happening, video games are growing and the market is shifting away from things like playing with trucks. And Tonka did not shift with it. So they're really, really struggling. And Shank has hired a Mattel veteran, Pat Fellie. He's the guy who basically helped turn things around at Mattel with He-Man. So he was basically the really a key person with developing of He-Man. And so they need something quick. And the shortcut is to license existing toys because the development and manufacturing is done. It's quicker and cheaper to market. So they go out everywhere looking around for something to market, and they come across this toy that Knickerbocker has. Knickerbocker is going out of business, and it's this interesting toy, which is a car and a robot, but it's a cheap knockoff. The real one is being done in Japan by Bandai, which is making this thing called a Machine Robo. And so Steve Shank heads to Tokyo to get the rights. And Bandai demands, okay, well, we can make this for you, but you got to buy 800,000 units as part of the deal, and Tonka has never sold that much,

Poor Charlie Brown. For over 50 Christmases the same frustrated question has wailed from his mouth - "Can anyone tell me what Christmas is really all about?!" My eight-year-old son could have told him. We were at the kitchen table devouring a Christmas Eve pizza, eager to start opening gifts. That's when the call came. Our kids sort of groaned collectively. It was Wilma, the assistant principal at a tough inner city elementary school. She apologized for interrupting us on Christmas Eve (no apology needed), but she was desperate. She was trying to rescue Christmas for some of the children in her school. Their families had been burned out of their apartments in a recent series of suspicious fires. Their Christmases had gone up in flames. Wilma asked, "Guys, is there any way you could look around the house and see if there's anything you might be able to donate for these kids and their families? I just didn't know who else to call at the last minute like this." Our three kids were off to go closet diving almost before I could explain the request. Karen and I went coat shopping in our closet. Our son Doug was the first one to return from toy hunting. There's no way I could have expected what he was carrying in his arms. His bright red, nearly new, fully-equipped Tonka fire truck. Possibly his most treasured toy. "I want to give this to some boy who might not have a Christmas," he said. "Wow, Doug. I know how much you love that truck. But I don't want you to be sorry later on. Are you sure you want to give it?" I've never forgotten his answer. With wide eyes and a wrinkled brow, he held up that fire truck and he said, "But, Daddy - isn't this what Christmas is all about?" Yes, Doug, it is. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "A Fire Truck and a Question for Christmas." For some of us this Christmas, it may be about giving something that isn't easy for us to give. A gift of great value... and great sacrifice. Giving someone time we don't have. Or a listening ear. A helping hand. An apology. Some overdue "I love you's." Maybe our gift would be a place to stay or a financial intervention. A visit. A costly "I forgive you." A reconciling letter. A timeout for a caregiver. A meal together. Or, a second chance. It may very well be a gift only you can give them. And one of greater value than anything from Amazon or the mall. It was that very first Christmas when God gave the gift that, only He could give. A way for us to bridge the unbreachable gap between us and Him. Created by our defiant living of life "my way" instead of His way. What the Bible calls, sin. What the Bible says, carries an eternal death penalty. But God comes to us with the priceless gift of eternal life in his hands. But it was surely the most expensive gift ever given, it cost Him everything. Now a word for today from the Word of God, in Romans 8:32. "He spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all." You see it was only the life of the Son of God, that was birthed in that stable, and surrendered on that cross, that could pay our death penalty and give us Heaven. And this could be your very first Christmas with Christ in your heart, if you would say to Him this day, Jesus, you died for my sin, I am yours, beginning today. And then we demonize them when they grow up and act like the wild animal that they are, because people think if they neuter them, if they get their teeth removed - not my chimp, my chimp is not going to act like that." - Angela Scott    Last week we released an episode with Brittany Peet, PETA's general counsel for captive animal law enforcement, who is featured in the HBO docuseries, Chimp Crazy. If you haven't seen it, please see it. It's made by Eric Goode, the guy who made Tiger King, and it is equally shocking.  It also shines a light on the need to pass the Captive Primate Safety Act and there are many high hopes that that act could get passed this year because of Chimp Crazy.    Chimp Crazy focuses on chimpanzee owners, private owners that buy cute baby chimps, dress them up and treat them like human children until they are 5 or 6 years old, when the chimps become large, and very strong wild animals. This part usually ends badly. Well, it always ends badly for the chimps but quite often it does for the humans too. This conversation is with Angela Scott, the whistleblower in Chimp Crazy, and for this entire case. A little background: Angela volunteered at a place called Chimp Party for a woman named Connie Casey. Connie and her husband Mike bred and sold chimpanzees and other primates for decades. PETA got involved because of the horrific conditions these chimps were living in. Angela was the whistleblower who worked with PETA. But before the case could fully go through, Connie gave her chimps to a woman named Tonya Haddix. And the chimps were in Tanya's care when they were rescued, all except for one, a chimp named Tonka. Tanya tried to keep Tonka for herself and she hid him from PETA for months in a cage in her basement. All of the chimps, including Tonka, were eventually saved because of Angela's willingness to go back to Connies and film what she saw. Angela's stories of what these chimps went through are astonishing and I am so grateful to her for sharing them with us. 

Angela Scott was 19 when she first volunteered for Chimparty. She's  the whistleblower who got the evidence that exposed the animal cruelty in the Netflix documentary, "Chimp Crazy." Scott tells Emil Guillermo about the conditions chimps lived under, how the breeding process strips mother chimps from their young.
