Corey Costanzo is the Co-Owner of Asheville's Still Point Wellness Spa, a licensed addiction counselor, trauma specialist, licensed massage therapist, master didgeridoo player, colleague, and my good friend. In this episode, Corey and I have a conversation about mind reading. Mind reading is a cognitive distortion where individuals believe they can accurately guess or know what others are thinking or feeling without direct communication. In relationships, this often involves making assumptions about a partner's thoughts, feelings, or intentions based on minimal or ambiguous cues. Attunement is different than mind reading, which we elaborate on. Corey Costanzo is the Co-Owner of Asheville's Still Point Wellness Spa, a licensed addiction counselor, trauma specialist, master didgeridoo player, colleague, and good friend. One of the greatest joys in his life involves relating with others. So, it's not surprising that he remembers one sentence I said over a year ago in one of our conversations: that the number one predictor of a relationship's success is allowing influence. But sometimes, opening up to our partners' thoughts and ideas can be challenging, especially if we're still working on our tendencies to withdraw and our need to be right. How do you accept your partner's influence with gentleness - without feeling disempowered or defensive? In this episode, Corey and I share some examples of opening up to influence in our relationships with our partners, in our work as therapists, and in our friendship with each other. We emphasize the importance of embracing your partner's influence and thoughts with grace, humility, and a good heart. We share how men are normally socially conditioned to seek “winning” and reject the notion of opening up to influence from their partners. We also share statistical data that provides insight into the effects of sharing power in a relationship and underscore how embracing influence can make our relationships more magical. “The best way to effectively share power in a relationship is when we can each have a voice and when we can each feel confident about the influence of our voice.” - Corey Costanzo This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It: Influence and sharing power in relationships The number one thing that makes relationships thrive How our partner's influence can be an indicator of a behavior we're not conscious of The detrimental impacts of rejecting influence Statistical data on the relationship between being open to influence and the success of a marriage Men's need to “win” and how the need to be right lowers the other person's self-confidence The importance of listening to the reflection of a relationship How men are socially conditioned to perceive allowing influence as relegating autonomy and power How trust and self-awareness can allow us to open up to influence and accept boundaries Withdrawing connection, attention, and love as unhealthy responses to influence Cultivating balance and allowing influence in physical contact Allowing influence in friendships and how nobody changes with criticism Related Content: Receiving Someone's Anger The Anger Habit Emotional Regulation Connect with Corey Costanzo: Still Point Wellness Still Point Wellness on Instagram Still Point Wellness on Facebook Still Point Wellness on Pinterest Corey Costanzo on LinkedIn Email: stillpoint@stillpointwell.com Let's Talk About It! Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

Dealing with our own anger habits in a healthy and productive way can be challenging in itself, but what can often be even more difficult is learning how to deal with receiving someone else’s anger in a way that doesn’t turn into a conflict or inspire feelings of resentment. If we leave ourselves unchecked, it can be easy to ‘feed off’ of someone else’s anger. Keeping ourselves grounded when receiving someone’s anger is critical to defuse the situation, but how do you do that? Addiction counselor, trauma specialist, and co-founder of Still Point Wellness, Corey Costanzo, suggests it starts with self-regulation In today’s episode, Corey and I discuss the varying degrees of anger - both giving and receiving it. We discuss how some anger is considered healthy and how we can determine when someone’s anger becomes unhealthy and abusive. We explore ways couples can help their partners defuse their anger. We discuss how my wife, Rainbow, helps me self-regulate my angry feelings by allowing me to vent. We highlight the strategies we use to keep ourselves grounded when we’re on the receiving end of someone’s anger, such as breathing deeply and validating the other person’s point of view. We discuss the importance of setting boundaries when receiving someone’s anger, some of the phrases that can often trigger a person’s anger, such as“calm down,” “just deal with it,” and “ you’re making too big of a deal out of this.” We also share alternative phrases you can use to help defuse an angry situation and Corey shares how his wife, Robin, helped him snap out of an ‘anger fog’ through empathy, understanding, and love.   “It’s the validation of an angry person’s anger that is most likely going to defuse the anger and lead towards greater connection and understanding.”  - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

Whether we are its origin or its receiver, we all experience anger throughout our lives. While anger isn’t necessarily “bad,” it is a critical emotion to understand, for what we do with anger has the opportunity to bring our loved ones closer or push them away from us. And like other emotions, we become more accustomed to anger the more we express it without restraint, creating a toxic habit that can lead to contempt in our relationships. Anger becomes more difficult to manage when it becomes a habit, for habits are executed without much conscious effort. Although the anger habit can be hard-wired in a person’s brain, bodywork therapist and Still Point Wellness owner Corey Costanzo suggests that a person can break free from anger’s chains through awareness, conscious work, and education. In this episode, Corey and I define anger as the need to be in control of external factors. We reveal how helplessness leads to frustration and, eventually, anger. We highlight different means of expressing anger in a healthy, non-destructive way. We discuss how anger impacts relationships and creates codependent dynamics in family systems. We also uncover the other emotions behind the mask of anger and underscore the power of appreciation as an antidote to the anger habit. “Anger is an emotional pathway that gets hard-wired in the brain. With a bit of awareness, work, and information, you can shift out of the anger habit.” - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

Once a person recognizes codependent patterns in their relationships, the next important step is to learn how to overcome them. Our friendships can be a source of good modeling and influence our journey through healing codependency in our lives. My friend, Corey Costanzo, is one such friend who encourages my positivity in the world. He is a licensed addictions counselor, bodywork therapist, and somatic experiencing practitioner who owns Still Point Wellness, the premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville, North Carolina. Through the years, Corey and I have worn many hats together: as colleagues who consult with one another and as fathers who celebrate each other’s parenting. Ours is a friendship that has seen joy and appreciation - truly, a fine piece in overcoming codependent tendencies. In this episode, Corey and I discuss the hallmarks of codependent patterns and behaviors in relationships and the tools a person needs to break them. We discuss how childhood upbringing and family dynamics can inform codependent behavior later in life and illustrate how friendships can support the healing of codependent relationships. We highlight the role of education in raising awareness of codependent patterns as well as overcoming them. We also underscore the power of the breath in realizing, managing, and healing codependent behavior and explain how meditative practices can help us self-soothe difficult emotions.   “The antidote is loving oneself, self-respect, and self-awareness.” - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: The signs of codependency and how people develop them Codependency as a learned behavior and how it shows up in families struggling with addiction and long-term illnesses How codependency lives in the subconscious patterns of a family system The role of awareness in overcoming codependency The characteristics of people with codependency issues The difficulty of codependent people going through relational conflict Why education is an essential piece in overcoming codependent patterns Cultivating a sense of self and its power in overcoming codependency The fear of being independent in relationships and what we lose from becoming codependent The importance of aligning with your personal values and building self-worth Putting up boundaries to break codependent patterns What ruminating is and how negative emotions can impact physical health Meditating with difficult emotions and other methods to manage negative feelings The power of the breath in regulating emotions and gaining awareness of codependent patterns How utilizing the breath gives you the agency to speak your truth Attraction to the “bad boy” type and picking people as projects to fix Why people stay in codependent and emotionally abusive relationships How codependency can be a spiritual issue Bringing awareness to the potential of love and compassion to heal   Resources Mentioned: Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself by Melody Beattie Al-Anon Family Groups Headspace   Related Content: Codependency People-Pleasing Expressing Needs Do the Right Thing Emotional Regulation Is Stress Affecting Your Relationship? Codependency is rather insidious: though many people are familiar with the term, they don’t know how it manifests in families and impacts relationships. Awareness, Corey Costanzo stresses, is key to healing it. Corey is a licensed addictions counselor and bodywork therapist, somatic experiencing practitioner, a master didgeridoo player, and a good friend of mine. Together with his wife, Robin, Corey co-owns Still Point Wellness, a premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville, North Carolina. Today, Corey and I explore the hallmarks of a dysfunctional family and how it breeds codependency. We illustrate the dynamics of codependent relationships and their children and explain why dysfunctional families find it difficult to navigate difficult emotions and situations. We describe the characteristics of codependent behaviors and illustrate their impact on relationships. We also share our experiences in dealing with codependent relationships and emphasize the role of awareness in breaking the cycle of codependency.   “Codependency is an emotional and behavioral condition that affects an individual’s ability to have healthy, mutually satisfying relationships.”  - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: Codependency as a learned behavior in families and how it can be passed to generations The relationship between codependency and addiction The consequences of codependent behavior Codependent relationships between children and parents Why parents need to deal with their own emotions The characteristics of a dysfunctional family What makes families afraid of discussing difficult emotions and experiences Detachment and fear of connection in dysfunctional families Experiencing codependence in my family and learning to talk about emotions How Corey cultivated trust between himself and a teenager in his practice Breaking the cycle of codependency in couples Witnessing our partners’ experiences with emotions What enmeshment in a relationship looks like and what it takes to be differentiated Relationships with people with diagnosed mental illness and how to navigate them The fear of abandonment and the experience of isolation in codependent relationships The characteristics of codependent people and how codependency manifests in a couple’s sex life   Related Content: Expressing Needs Emotional Regulation Do the Right Thing Is Stress Affecting Your Relationship? Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

A lot of people are in tremendous stress as a result of the global pandemic. Some people find themselves falling back to some old behavior patterns that they thought they had already let go. This is what’s called regression: a defensive mechanism for coping with stress. It’s a common phenomenon many of us experience unconsciously. Corey Costanzo - a licensed addictions counselor and good friend of mine - believes that a significant part of managing our regressive responses to stress is mindfulness. Corey is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, somatic experiencing practitioner, and co-owner of Still Point Wellness, a premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville.   Today, Corey and I discuss our tendency to regress when we are under stress. We highlight the different ways regression can manifest in our lives and how they can impact our relationships. We share some of the tools you can use to learn how to recognize regressive tendencies and manage them. We also draw from our personal experiences with regression and illustrate how we work with it, as well as emphasize the parents’ roles in teaching children how to cope with stress and negative experiences.   “It’s important for everybody to figure out the resources to be able to stand up in the face of uncomfortable sensations and thoughts.” - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: How a stunted developmental stage can result in adult regression The collective stress resulting from the pandemic and how stress triggers regressive behavior Substance use and addiction as a form of regression and the importance of bringing regressive behavior into the consciousness Regression and self-sabotage The difference between a regressed response versus a partnered response The value of communicating our needs and meeting them ourselves How mindfulness can help the awareness of regression and recognition of stress The neuroscience of stress and meditation and how our brain regresses to primitive lifeforms when we’re stressed Corey’s experiences with regression and how he transforms them How our regressive behaviors are exhibited when we’re with family My tendency to shut down and get defensive under stressful situations Experiencing tension, anxiety, and regression in the body What it means to resource for ourselves Regression in children and teenagers and how parents can model calm and mindfulness for their kids The importance of seeking support in times of stress    Related Content: Anxiety in Families Emotional Regulation Do the Right Thing Is Stress Affecting Your Relationship? Many of us maintain daily practices. They bring us to a state of a balanced and stable mind. For some, that practice is yoga or meditation, while for others, it could be writing morning pages or creating art. For Corey Costanzo, it’s doing didgeridoo meditation sessions. Corey - a colleague and long-time friend of mine - is a master didgeridooist who has been playing the instrument for over 20 years. For over 100 days since the COVID-19 pandemic started, Corey has been hosting 20-minute didgeridoo meditation sessions at Still Point Wellness on Facebook.   Corey is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, a licensed addictions counselor, somatic experiencing practitioner, and co-owner of Still Point Wellness, a premier Esalen Massage and Salt Water Floatation spa in Asheville. By transforming his morning routine with the didgeridoo to a shared experience with an online community, Corey continues to realize the connection between cultivating personal practices and wellbeing.   In this episode, Corey and I discuss the importance of personal practices. We differentiate routine from cultivating a personal practice and illustrate how our relationships can benefit from the latter. We describe how bringing curiosity and mindfulness into our practice can bring us to a deeper understanding of ourselves. We also explore the overwhelm and guilt people feel when they fail to follow-through on habits and practices as well as share advice on how we can cultivate a daily practice.   “Personal practice is the antidote to a co-dependent relationship. I fill myself with what brings me joy and from there, I meet my partner.” - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! He also explains what non-addicted partners can do to help themselves in a relationship involving addiction and how insight and awareness can help addicted partners learn to make better choices and decisions that are aligned with their life goals.   “When there’s an addiction in the relationship, it’s almost as if there’s a third-party that’s in the relationship.” - Corey Costanzo   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It:   How addictions often drive a wedge between partners. The importance of non-addicted partners seeking help, counseling, and treatment. What is Al-Anon and how it helps relationships involving addictions? Signs of co-dependence and how it impacts your relationship. How co-dependences tendencies impact future generations. The difference between judging a person judging the behavior. The importance of setting boundaries. The difference between advocating sobriety vs. advocating moderation. How addictions impact trust. The importance of staying disciplined and focused on the long-term goal when facing relapses. How periods of addiction relapses can help identify what is “lacking” in an addicted person’s life. How practicing mindfulness meditation can help non-addicted partners stay aligned with and empowered to hold their boundaries. Recognizing triggers that lead to addiction or relapse. How insight and awareness can help addicted partners make better choices that are in line with their life goals.
