Today Elaine chats to poet and Storyteller Laura Thurlow about her new show River Time. We talk about the inspiration for the show, how women aren't allowed to grow old and still be beautiful as well as touching on discovering something about yourself that changes everything. River Time- Greenside@Riddles Court - Picles Studio Dates: 9th - 24th August @ 1.45 pm Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/river-time River Time River Time! pulls its title from one of the show's opening anecdotes. As a student in Edinburgh with unmanaged ADHD, Laura would often go for a night out on the Cowgate, perceive someone as looking at her wrong, become paranoid that her friends secretly despised her, and have a meltdown. To regulate these intense emotions, she would take moonlit walks at 4am along the water of Leith. To this day, if she texts a friend River Time, they know that she means her brain is on fire. A little understood aspect of ADHD is the resulting impact of the Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria that sits alongside it. These mood swings, this intense fear of rejection, are felt in the body as intense emotional pain. Laura's fear of rejection takes her to the river, calls her to the sea, begs her to submit to the absolution of dark waters. Better to be a beautiful corpse than a failed woman. Laura's brain is ruining her life and plotting her death. This is a one-woman treatise on deciding not to drown. River Time! discusses Hamlet's Ophelia and the life and loss of Virginia Woolf. Laura tells anecdotes of rejection and desperation – feeling adrift in one's own mind. She speaks on grief, and guilt through describing the loss of a friend who did not survive their messy student days. The show is a dark storytelling hour from a gifted comedic voice. It is nuanced and entertaining while inherently and enduringly relatable. Come along and take some River Time! Laura Thurlow Laura Cathryn Thurlow is a writer and performer based in Scotland, originally from Canada with experience performing across Europe. Her previous show, ‘A Preoccupation with Romantic Love' received critical and audience praise in Edinburgh and Camden in 2023 and was nominated for an Emerging Artist Award with The Neurodiverse Review. Laura's recent credits include being a finalist at the European Slam Final held by Commonword (Manchester), and at the Glasgow Women's Library's ‘Calm Slam', and Scottish National qualifying slams at Candlelight Open Mic & The Poetry Experiment. She has recently been a featured performer with both The Loud Poets and Spoken Word Paris. She is currently completing a Master of Literature at the University of Glasgow. Beneath the bustling streets of Edinburgh, Scotland, lies a secret world known as the "Edinburgh Vaults." These hidden chambers are tucked away beneath the arches of the South Bridge, a massive 19th-century structure towering over the city's historic Old Town. Originally constructed in the late 18th century, the Vaults served as storage spaces and workshops for local merchants before falling into neglect. Over time, they became a refuge for outlaws, wanderers, and the city's most impoverished residents. Nowadays, the Edinburgh Vaults draw in curious tourists eager to delve into the city's past as they wander through the underground passageways. Put on by Old Trunk in 2014 - Sadie Hasler (Playwright/Actor) and Sarah Mayhew (Director/Actor) brought The Bastard) Children of Remington Steele to The Fringe. The play is less about about the television series and more about life and finding a place in it Curiously, this show was a double-header at the Fringe - while this and ‘The Secret Wives Of Andy Williams' were both standalone plays, they were also designed to be seen in partnership with each other and create a larger story. The podcast brought them into the local radio station - the show that year pulled double duty with online downloads, streaming, and FM transmission - to talk about the shows, although our resident chaos bunny Dan rapidly derails the conversation towards the titular Remington Steele. We're heading back to 2014, back to the Underbelly on the Cowgate, and back to Remington Steele.

His last appearance was a master class of the mellow live at the Bside HQ, this time, however he's sending us the good vibes all the way from Sicily. Andrea remains an integral part of the Edinburgh scene, as a co-founder of the city's leading community radio station EHFM, a record dealer, and resident of the Cowgate's finest establishment Sneaky Pete's. These accolades earning him the right to share the decks with very best: Young Marco, Gilles Peterson, Stump Valley, and Nu Guinea. Now back in Italy, his radio career continues with Mondonero and he will soon be managing Malamore Records from June. We're always excited to hear where Andrea Montalto's selection will take us and we were not disappointed! In contrast to the ambient mood of his live podcast, we get a glimpse into the jazzy/Italo/Afro infused disco energy he can bring to the party. Enjoy! Often, we view revolutionary figures from the point of view of what they achieved, or what they tried to achieve. We read their quotes, peruse their battles and reminisce over their speeches.Often we forget that they did not just exist in the public world. To raise those who required revolution was not their only role in life.We often fail to recognise that aside from how we knew them, there as another side to them.A side where they were not known as the creators of a new world but rather as a father, or mother, a brother or sister, a friend or colleague.Known as ordinary people who just happened to do extra ordinary things. If ye knew what they were like behind closed doors, would or view of them differ?Would we be more sympathetic to their battles outside the home?Would we view them as people rather than statues awaiting erection? It’s the life of a man born in Cowgate, Edinburgh, which answers these questions for us.This is his story, as told by his daughter Nora.Today's music was written, performed and produced by Ryhan O'Halloran.Nora's words were read by Ann Long. The story was researched and scripted by Oran. You can support this podcast by buying us a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/wetheirishWe the Irish is an Ireland Loves production. “As long as I live I will have control over my being” So wrote bold Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi, who took control of her life and her art, breaking the norms of society both in gaining renown for her painting and in taking her rapist to court at a time when few women were able to do either. Ash gets deep into the fetishisation of women killing men in Baroque painting, touches on why 17th century ‘it girls’ opted to hold spikes in their portraits, and establishes that the only thing to wear when beheading an enemy general is Damascus pearls. *also, the one in which Sarah has fallen down the stairs BIBLIOGRAPHY: Garrard, Mary D. Artemisia Gentileschi : The Image of the Female Hero in Italian Baroque Art (1989). Making their way across the Grassmarket to the Cowgate and up to the High Street, the mob converged on the Tolbooth, where they were eventually able to overpower the guards. Porteous was dragged from his cell up the Lawnmarket to the West Bow and down to the Grassmarket, where he was lynched from a dyer's pole, using a rope taken from a local draper's shop. After a short while, he was dragged down and stripped of his nightgown and shirt, which was then wrapped around his head before he was hauled up again. However, the mob had not tied his hands and, as he struggled free, they broke his arm and shoulder, while another attempted to set light to his naked foot. He was taken down a further time and cruelly beaten before being hung up again, and died a short while later, just before midnight on 7 September 1736. He was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh, the following day.The events in Edinburgh heightened the sense of alarm in London, where the government was concerned about the threat to its management of Scotland. It was thought by Walpole, Queen Caroline and the Duke of Newcastle that Porteous had been unnecessarily sacrificed and there were even rumours that the conspiracy had involved the local city magistrates. In February 1737 a parliamentary inquiry was held; the House of Lords initially proposed the disbanding of the town guard and removal of Netherbow Port, but subsequently dropped these suggestions. Eventually, the only punishments enforced were a £2,000 fine imposed on the city (used to support Porteous' widow) and the disbarment from all offices of the then Lord Provost Alexander Wilson. It was variously thought that Porteous' murder was carried out by friends of those who had been shot and killed, revenge by the smugglers, a Jacobite plot, or even a conspiracy by Presbyterian extremists. However, the organisation of events seems to imply a degree of planning, thought to be the work of James Maxwell, an Edinburgh journeyman carpenter, together with a small group of city tradesmen and journeymen. However, despite a reward of £200 being made available by the government for information, those responsible for the murder of Porteous were never found. The events surrounding the Porteous Riots form part of the early chapters of the novel The Heart of Midlothian by Sir Walter Scott (1818), where they are recorded in graphic detail.

Public resentment at a possible reprieve was such that a plot to murder Captain Porteous was hatched, and when the authorities heard of this it was decided to increase the guard at the Tolbooth prison. However, on the evening before this was due to happen, a large crowd of over four thousand gathered at Portsburgh, west of the city.Making their way across the Grassmarket to the Cowgate and up to the High Street, the mob converged on the Tolbooth, where they were eventually able to overpower the guards. Porteous was dragged from his cell up the Lawnmarket to the West Bow and down to the Grassmarket, where he was lynched from a dyer's pole, using a rope taken from a local draper's shop.

In this talk from the 2018 Revolution Festival, Ben Curry of the Socialist Appeal editorial board discusses the life of James Connolly: the man, his ideas, and their relevance for Marxists today. James Connolly was born in 1868 to Irish parents in Edinburgh’s Cowgate slum. He would grow to be the greatest Marxist ever produced by these islands; an iconic figure in the history of the Irish working class. Executed by the British army in 1916 following his leading role in the Easter Rising, Connolly’s courage and sacrifice stand out as an inspiration to revolutionaries everywhere. His ideas remain an important contribution to the Marxist understanding of national oppression and the struggle against it.
