Heather du Plessis-Allan: These kids know they're more likely to get away with ram raids than get caught

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2022 2:30

We had another retail raid overnight. This time at Sylvia Park Mall in Auckland at half past 3 this morning where the offenders smashed the glass door, got inside and tried to steal jewellery before taking off in a vehicle. This is after the Ormiston Mall ram raid on Tuesday morning, the ram raid at a gas station in west Auckland that same morning, aggravated robberies at west Auckland, dairies yesterday and raids on high end stores in Queen St earlier this month. If you're wondering why we're seeing so much of these raids and ram raids nowadays I suspect the answer is this:  these kids know they're more likely to get away with it than get caught. For a start look at burglary resolution rates. At last count – which is unfortunately quite old – from back in 2015, only 7 percent of burglaries in some regions were solved.7 percent. So offenders have a 93 percent chance of getting away with it.Then look at police pursuit data. The cops changed their policy about 18 months ago so they effectively don't chase as many fleeing offenders. So in a nine month period last year, they only chased 22 percent of fleeing drivers and they only arrested 17 percent of the drivers.Back in 2018, they arrested 40 percent of the drivers.Again, the kids probably realise that even if they were unlucky enough to get sprung on the scene of the crime they still had a far greater chance of getting away in their car than getting caught by the cops. Now, that isn't a criticism of front-line cops. They're only following orders. They can't chase if their bosses tell them they're not allowed to chase. And the police pursuit policy is by no means the total explanation.Ram raids are not new, kids getting away with lighter sentences than adults is not new, crime bosses using kids for organised crime because of those lighter sentences is not new.It doesn't help that the youth justice system is reportedly overloaded. But making it harder for cops to do their jobs and catch these kids is almost certainly not helping.Do we want these kids caught or not? If the answer is yes, then we need to have another look at whether we let the cops chase them.

Episode #89 Queen St    (Song starts at 6;58) This is the podcast where you get to hear how it feels to be a songwriter.  How do I do this? What I do I talk about?  The answers seem to come as I follow my nose, as I record what comes into my mind in the moment.  As a songwriter, you instinctively know when to jot notes down, when a phrase catches your ear in a certain way. It might be something that someone says in passing, or a sentence or two that just pop into your mind.. For that to happen, I find I need to make room for those sort of moments. To make room, in my head, to clear the slate a bit, I like getting out into nature.  On this week's episode, I take you with me down at the beach to catch that bit of fresh air. The song Queen St came about after I jotted down the sights I could recall from earlier in the day: at lunchtime on a Friday, Paul Dredge and I set up to busk rather hopefully - outside a bank. In Queens St, the main Street of Auckland's CBD, in New Zealand, Later on, as soon as I sang and played the first line, that's when I knew I had a song. All you really need to do is make a start.  Songwriting is so much like painting (which I do as well - you can check out a painting I did today of Sorrento, via, Australia, here: www.petepascoe.wordpress.com). The start gives you the feeling. That's number one. It gives you energy and a reason to write the next line, which leads on to the next ...and ... pretty soon you've got a whole page of lyrics to work with. This song was one of those ‘words first, music second' songs. I always used to write songs like that. These days I mainly find myself writing the music & words at the same time, which is fun.  As I recorded this episode, I was trying to recall what age I was when I wrote the song, I said 19 or 20, but it was more like 27.  Paul Dredge and I were on the road. It was a free, fun time in our lives. I think that sense of freedom comes through in this song. Ok, join me now for a half hour chat, with some music and some new music for you to listen to. There's some very nice vocal harmonies on this recording.  Here we go...

The Government has announced a $2.5 billion sweetener for councils who now have 6-8 weeks to decide whether they want to give up their pipes and reservoirs to join the Government's massive plan to merge 67 councils' water assets into four regional water entities.Concerns are mounting that the Government will force councils into the mergers, known as Three Waters reforms, rather than letting each council pick whether it wants in or out, as had previously been the plan.Three Waters reforms are on shaky ground, with councils and mayors as diverse as Whangarei and Auckland sounding notes of scepticism and outright hostility. Announcing the sweetener, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government would spend 6-8 weeks consulting councils and Local Government NZ, before deciding on the way forward.Government policy is still to let councils opt out if they want to - but Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta's line has hardened in recent months as she has refused to rule out forcing councils to give up their water assets for them to be merged into the new water entities. It comes as a convoy of 50 tractors and utes are set to thunder down Auckland's Queen St tomorrow as thousands of farmers around the country gear up for a "howl of a protest" that will see vehicles parade through urban centres across New Zealand.Groundswell NZ has organised the protest in 47 towns and cities on Friday.Pukekohe to Auckland organiser Scott Bright said that 50 tractors would be escorted by police along the Southern Motorway from Drury starting at 9.20am.The convoy would leave the motorway at Wellesley St, travel down Queen St before going along Beach Rd and rejoining the motorway heading south from Stanley St.Listen above as Simon Wilson and Tim Wilson discuss the day's news with Andrew Dickens on The Huddle

New Zealand's anti-terrorism hui has been marked by a mass walkout from members of the Muslim community. The country's first hui on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Ōtautahi/Christchurch involved experts discussing the evolution of terrorism risk in New Zealand, online extremism, the role of media, and the consequences of hate. The walkout happened Tuesday during a panel addressing the causes of terrorism after a comment from NZ Jewish Council spokesperson Juliet Moses about the Israel-Palestine conflict.Moses had told the crowd that leaders should be consistent in condemning terrorism."We need to hear leaders condemn all support for terrorism and all terrorism equally whatever the source, target, and circumstances, and even when it is not politically expedient to do so."Hezbollah and Hamas, their military wings are proscribed terror organisations in New Zealand but we saw a rally in support of Hezbollah on Queen St in 2018."Her remarks caused a strong response from members of the Muslim community, including victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks, as people shouted: "Free Palestine."Moses said she was only "stating fact" and did not believe her comments were controversial, and that she was referring to the 2018 march, not the one that happened in Auckland this year.Federation of the Islamic Associations of New Zealand (Fianz) chair Abdur Razzaq said the hui was about "discussing social cohesion ... we came here to discuss ways to peace"."There are lots of things out there that divide us, let us have some wisdom and prioritise what unites us first."He said it was "inappropriate" to discuss issues "that divide us" and was not the tikanga way. After the panel had finished, the hui organisers gave those in attendance a chance to respond to the comments, which included a remark from Rashid Omar, whose son Tariq died in the March 15 mosque attacks.text by Eleisha Foon of RNZ

Queen Street businesses are suing the council over a pedestrian trial - which they say has left Auckland's main street a "disgrace". Barriers originally put in place for Covid-19 distancing were kept on by the council to trial a pedestrian friendly street. Now, those opposing the changes are trying to put a stop to the council's plans to make them more permanent. Reporter Louise Ternouth and camera operator Nick Monro filed this report.

I was out at two businesses yesterday where at both places the owners said to me ‘what do you reckon? Will we get to Level 1 today? Are you excited for it?’ Now these are smart people whose businesses have been affected by lockdowns, who hate lockdowns, yet they’re reverentially waiting to hear the obvious: that we’re coming out of it. That we’re back to normal. They’re so grateful, which is the part of all this I find most galling. Switching down alert levels is a no brainer, so why are we so grovelling with gratitude over it?I mean of course, we’re happy to be out of Level 3 and 2, of course we are, but the point is, we should never have been there in the first place. Lockdowns cannot possibly be the only way to deal with outbreaks, especially when, like today, we are still no further down the track of knowing where it came from or how it started. Much like the Americold cluster, we will probably never know. But freaking out and plunging us into lockdowns is costly and anxiety provoking. It scares people, threatens livelihoods, endangers the most vulnerable, costs businesses and creates uncertainty. The government is defending the decision of course, it has to, it couldn’t not. It’s claiming success in containing the cluster. But what if the cluster was never going to get bigger than that anyway? It did after all only affect one family and their close contacts. So did the whole country need plunging into Level 2 and Auckland into Level 3? Really? One of the side effects is scaring people - there're those who don’t want to shift down alert levels, who think it’s too soon, who've had   all their anxieties prickled back up. That’s a crying shame to do that to people. But the intense level of gratitude from most, as if the government has done us all a giant favour, is surely bordering on some kind of psychological condition – almost like a version of Stockholm syndrome. We didn’t ask to be put into captivity, but when we get our freedom back we’re so happy we've been granted it, we’re almost deferential to the people who took it off us.We’ve willingly gone into lockstep with our leaders and started to believe our freedom wasn't ours anyway - which by the way is a good thing, because not following instructions would be end up with anarchy - but I just wish in doing so, we'd keep our heads.Don’t get me wrong I’m not anti lockdowns at a ‘protest down Queen St’ kind of level, I’m just aggrieved that we so easily forget that this fresh freedom we’re being granted, is not some overtly generous gift we should be bowing and scraping with gratitude over.. but something that was always ours to begin with.I get it, it’s good to be back to Level 1, but let’s not get de-sensitised to the value of our freedom, every time this happens.

In Episode 844, Sean goes solo again to consider what might constitute a successful season for the Raptors in 2020-21. He first discusses finding the balance of winning as many games as possible while also developing Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby and Fred VanVleet, and whether those dueling agendas can in fact go hand-in-hand. Next, Sean considers another avenue to success, which revolves around doing everything possible to maximize what could be the final season of Kyle Lowry in Toronto -- a road that probably involves maximizing wins and maybe even making a mid-season move for a substantial rental. To close things out, Sean hits on the things he's most excited to watch in the Raptors' preseason opener against the Hornets tomorrow. How do you go from smoking meth every day for 6 years, to getting clean and rising to the heights of corporate success at one of the world's largest companies, then relapsing, overdosing and almost dying to a massive turnaround in building a 7 figure business that impacts lives all over the world in just one year? Just ask Brody Lee, my guest on this week's edition of the Wolf of Queen St. Brody's life was one of success and achievement but underneath the surface he found himself unfulfilled and this just got worse over time. During this work identity crisis Brody had repressed childhood trauma come back and these two personal crises just magnified. This pushed Brody into relapsing and using meth and finally it got to the point that he overdosed and was lucky to survive. It was at this moment Brody realised that he did not want to live his life like this. He words were, F#$% No and this started his mission to impact billions of lives globally. By day, Brody now helps coaches grow and scale their businesses. In a few week's he'll be hosting coaches from all over the world for IMPACT, a 2 day immersive business intensive where he will be revealing the exact strategy that he used to become a 7-figure coach by focussing on impact over income. This is the same strategy that his clients all over the world are using to hit six figures and consistent five figure months without any ad spend, crazy funnels or crappy business social events. This has proven to be wildly successful with his clients generating over a million dollars in sales in the second half of 2019. When he isn't helping coaches thrive, Brody is ruthlessly committed to impacting lives through his philanthropic work and impacted a million lives in 2019. Brody took 106 first time marathon runners to New York City to run in the famous New York Marathon. Together they raised over $200,000 to help get kids off the streets. Over the 2019/2020 festive season, Brody matched his client's donations and together they fed 100,000 people. In 2020, Brody and his team will feed over 1 million people, a billion by 2025 and he is currently working on a model that will end world hunger by 2030. https://www.brodylee.com.au/
