Founders Giovanni and Tony share how they built a better-for-you, gluten-free bakery brand without cutting corners or flavor. A large part of the footpath on lower Queen Street remains blocked off on Tuesday morning, after falling masonry injured two pedestrians on Monday. Reporter Finn Blackwell spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Visioncorps is accepting Braille letters to send to Santa. Kids who submit a letter will hear back even if it is after Christmas. Erika Rothermel is a teacher of the blind and visually impaired at Visioncorps. “So being able to write a letter to Santa is a long standing tradition that children have been doing for years. But being able to open it up to the Braille population has been a new adventure. And it's, yeah, something fun to include everybody. So we started doing that here at Vision Core about five years ago, “said Rothermel. 9-year-old JJ Maldonado took advantage of the opportunity and is looking forward to hear back from Santa soon. “I asked for a microphone.. and a police car, “said Maldonado.” Maldonado’s mother, Yaritza Riversa says Visioncorps has helped with JJ’s journey. JJ was diagnosed with cancer at just a month old. “He was born with cancer. It's a genetic type of cancer. But he's that one person that was actually born without mom and dad having that gene. And it is bilateral, meaning he has it in both eyes, “said Rivera. He began chemo at just three months old and underwent a lot of chemo and radiation. “He actually got his right eye removed at the age of three years old. And that's kind of where the vision kind of went down a little bit. I'm the only eye he had. And so, yeah, and then Vision Corp kicked in and helped so much during this transition because it's definitely tough and they made it so much easier, especially for JJ and myself, because, you know, as a mom, it's like, what do I do? Not knowing this is on you. So, they have been a blessing to us. And even though JJ is now in school when he's 13, they still involved him and everything, and they're there for him no matter what. Just on a on a regular time. You know, they check up on Jay and make sure he's doing great. So they're amazing and we are so blessed to have them, “said Rivera. According to JJ, learning braille can be challenging. “It's really hard to learn all the contractions and all how to like type with your fingers and how to read properly. The question of whether Auckland needs a waterfront or downtown stadium has always been an easy question for me to answer. No, Auckland doesn't need another stadium. We already have quite a few stadiums with different capacities catering to various our needs. There are a lot of other more important things Auckland needs; less traffic congestion, better public transport, a better waste water system, more schools, more housing, a massive wet and wild Waterslide park - you know, the important stuff. A stadium, in the heart of the city is a nice to have, right? But you know what, how nice would it be to have. Sitting on the glistening shores of the Waitemata Harbour, the CBD should be the pride of Auckland City. Instead, it's too often the subject of complaints about safety, policing and access as Queen St transforms into a shared space. A lot of work has gone into enticing people back into the city centre; the Britomart complex, an upgraded Quay St, the impressive Wynyard Quarter. We know if you create interesting spaces – theatres, stadiums, family friendly open spaces, shopping precincts, entertainment and hospo areas – and make them accessible – the people will come and we'll get a world class, vibrant city with all the economic benefits that go along with that. So for this reason alone, I say bring it on. However, a city-based stadium in Auckland is like a lot of infrastructure projects in New Zealand – spoken about for decades but rarely seen. We thought about it in 2006 when Trevor Mallard thought it would be nice to have one for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, instead of spending money on upgrading Eden Park. In 2017 then Mayor Phil Goff commissioned a $1million feasibility report - which he was then reluctant to release. It turns out stadiums don't turn much of a profit. We've had architects, various consortiums and sports team owners present their visions for a revamped Auckland waterfront. There are probably a few students out there who've created some pretty good-looking Auckland waterfront designs for a school study. So far they've all been pipedreams; a teaser to get the public on side, a push to get politicians to act. Yesterday a new vison for Auckland Quay Park was released to the public by a consortium headed by former Warriors Chief Executive Jim Doyle. It includes not just an impressive looking 50,000-seater stadium with views to Rangitoto (is anyone else concerned about the wind swirling around in there?) but also hotels, bars and restaurants, residential apartments and public spaces and parks. Their vision is impressive – who wouldn't want it over an old railway yard? It's good to see local iwi who own the land on board, and with the majority of the investment coming from the private sector, input from the council and government is thought to be less than what may have to be spent on maintaining Eden Park in the future. It's a compelling case and vision. We will just have to wait and see if anyone is brave enough to commit to it. I hope they do. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

These attacks apparently include assaults, robberies and sexual assaults, mainly in Suva's downtown nightspots. Fiji, one of the safest countries in the world, facing the same problem many CBD's are facing these day;  increased violence. I mean if a safe haven like Fiji can end up with a travel advisory for New Zealand, the US and Canada to ‘remain alert in public places' then god knows what the warning should be for tourists coming to downtown Auckland these days. It sort of seems unfair that Kiwis are being told to ‘exercise increased caution in Fiji' - I mean that's what I'd tell anyone visiting Auckland too to be honest. But every time I raise how dangerous Auckland is these days, people always contact me from other centres telling me crime is rampant there too. It's not just the violence though is it, it's the low rent factor as well. The social issues tipping out all over our streets. I was in two opposite ends of Auckland yesterday, and both places had barefoot beggars at intersections tapping on car windows asking for money. Some are organised with signs, some just wander aimlessly banging on car windows and waving their hands. Most of the cars I noticed ignored them, in fact all bar one guy in a Ute who wound down his window and flicked out a couple of coins. But who has cash these days anyway? They can't be making much business out there at the intersections. It used to be window washers asking for money, but these days they've ditched the soap and brush and they're just straight up asking for money outright. I often wonder how intimidating that must be for little old ladies alone in their cars, or young students on their restricted, nervous about why someone is walking through moving traffic banging on their car window. It's actually dangerous, I saw one guy almost get hit. Cars had to swerve for him, I'm not sure how it's allowed, but that's the point. Nothing's not allowed anymore is it? We've just come to accept that our suburban streets may look at times like downtown New York, minus the cops. Barefoot beggars wandering through traffic, and people on street corners yelling obscenities is somehow normal now. When did that happen? When did we just accept that every social and mental health issue is fine to just pour out all over our streets? A woman wrote to me the other day saying her son and a friend had been walking down Auckland's Queen St last year after attending a gig, and a group of men in a car was going past yelling at pedestrians. The car then stopped, the men got out and attacked her son and his friend. Her son was tasered and stabbed in the chest, puncturing his lung, his friend was bludgeoned with a hammer, resulting in a fractured skull. No one was found or held accountable for the attack. but she said she found herself saying to her son after the Auckland CBD shootings recently, that he was lucky he only got stabbed. She said the fact she even thought that, far less said it out loud, was extremely sobering. It's a telling sign of where we're at isn't it? It's just in time for the Christmas shopping splurge - a facelift for one of Aucklands' busiest and most maligned retail strips. Today saw the official opening of a long-awaited facelift for one of Queen Street's busiest stretches, with hopes it will help revive the ailing city centre. Converting a car lane into an extended footpath, Auckland Council aims to see more feet on the ground. Felix Walton and Nick Monro put it to the test.  

A massive and irreplaceable archive of historically significant photographs is up for sale on the open market, after a lengthy ordeal abroad that almost saw them destroyed. Dubbed the Fairfax Archives, in 2013 the collection of 1.4 million photographs was sent by Fairfax Media to the United States to be digitised. However the company carrying out the digitisation later became linked to sports memorabilia fraud, was raided by the FBI and later bankrupted. The collection of images, as well as others from Australian newspapers, were seized and held as collateral on a US$14 million loan, and were in danger of being destroyed. An L.A-based gallery has since bought the entire archive, and is putting some of the photos up for sale. Described by historians as the country's "national photo album", the archive spans from 1840 to 2005. It includes historic moments like the 1981 Springbok Tour protests, the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, the aftermath of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mt Everest - as well as royal visits, Auckland's Queen St and 40,000 pictures of the All Blacks. So where should the Fairfax Archive ideally end up? And what does the sale of the collection mean for the preservation of our history? Kathryn speaks to Daniel Miller, the owner of Duncan Miller Gallery in Los Angeles and Dr Paul Moon, a professor of History at AUT who was asked by Duncan Miller Gallery to help identify the images.

After more than four decades - the mystery of who are the two teenagers sparring with boxing legend Muhammad Ali, in a famous New Zealand Herald photograph, has been solved. The world heavyweight champion was on a promotional tour in 1979 when he ran into the youngsters on Auckland's Queen St - one of whom it turns out also went onto have a distinguished sporting career. Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin has more.

We had another retail raid overnight.This time at Sylvia Park Mall in Auckland at half past 3 this morning where the offenders smashed the glass door, got inside and tried to steal jewellery before taking off in a vehicle.This is after the Ormiston Mall ram raid on Tuesday morning, the ram raid at a gas station in west Auckland that same morning, aggravated robberies at west Auckland, dairies yesterday and raids on high end stores in Queen St earlier this month.If you're wondering why we're seeing so much of these raids and ram raids nowadays I suspect the answer is this:  these kids know they're more likely to get away with it than get caught.For a start look at burglary resolution rates. At last count – which is unfortunately quite old – from back in 2015, only 7 percent of burglaries in some regions were solved.7 percent.So offenders have a 93 percent chance of getting away with it.Then look at police pursuit data.The cops changed their policy about 18 months ago so they effectively don't chase as many fleeing offenders.So in a nine month period last year, they only chased 22 percent of fleeing drivers and they only arrested 17 percent of the drivers.Back in 2018, they arrested 40 percent of the drivers.Again, the kids probably realise that even if they were unlucky enough to get sprung on the scene of the crime they still had a far greater chance of getting away in their car than getting caught by the cops.Now, that isn't a criticism of front-line cops. They're only following orders. They can't chase if their bosses tell them they're not allowed to chase.And the police pursuit policy is by no means the total explanation.Ram raids are not new, kids getting away with lighter sentences than adults is not new, crime bosses using kids for organised crime because of those lighter sentences is not new.It doesn't help that the youth justice system is reportedly overloaded.But making it harder for cops to do their jobs and catch these kids is almost certainly not helping.Do we want these kids caught or not? If the answer is yes, then we need to have another look at whether we let the cops chase them.

Beyond paper, we also carry a variety of art & craft supplies, greeting cards and stationery, party supplies, gifts and journals and so much more. 4. When did you start selling crepe paper? How did this come about? We started carrying crepe paper in the shop back in 2013. A number of customers had been requesting it for several years as it was almost impossible to come by here in Canada. I had been trying to order it directly from Germany for quite some time, even going so far as to have a friend compose fax for me in German, but I wasn't able to make it happen. Fortunately, in 2013, I met a supplier of German craft supplies who was just testing the waters bringing in crepe paper so I was thrilled to finally have access to bring it to the shop for our customers. 5. How has the paper business changed over the years? We have definitely seen trends changing rapidly over the last few years in terms of what kinds of products our customers are looking for and also what they are using our papers to make. For instance, in our early days, the bulk of our business was people purchasing paper and envelopes to make wedding invitations, now that makes up a very small percentage of our business. Because of these changes, we are constantly adapting to what it is our customers are looking for now and trying to make sure that our product offering reflects what is new and exciting in the paper/stationery world. 6. What are some of the challenges you've faced in your business? For us brick-and-mortar shops, there is a lot more competition from online stores that don't have the overhead that retail storefronts do and/or larger companies who are able to negotiate discounts with suppliers and offer products at a lower price than we can. It is a huge challenge for us as we try to balance staying competitive with our pricing with making enough money to keep our doors open. 7. Who are your ideal clients? Because of our extremely varied product offering, we don't have a specific ideal client. Our first customer of the day may be looking for a greeting card, the next may be a conservator, then someone looking to make 100 paper flowers for their wedding, etc… It definitely makes our day interesting and inspiring because we get to work with so many different customers on such an amazing variety of projects. 8. What type of workshops does The Paper Place offer? Our workshop offering is constantly changing as we try to anticipate what projects may interest our customers.
