This week Mike is joined by returning guest Scott Weatherly of the 20th Century Geek podcast and the Stories Out Of Time & Space podcast, to talk about one of the most influential fantasy/horror writers who you may have never heard of; H.P. Lovecraft! Part 1 of Mike & Scott’s chat starts with Lovecraft’s life including his bigotry, relationships & death, before talking about Lovecraft’s writing style, the realm of Lovecraftian horror that he created including ancient beings like Cthulu, what happened to his works after he died and more! Parts 1&2 are available now on Patreon in one unsplit episode, but on this standard feed, part 2 of their discussion will be released next week! In part 2, their chat on Lovecraft continues, starting with Alan Moore’s Lovecraftian comic, surviving in Lovecraft’s world, Scott then reads out a short passage from a Lovecraft story, why it’s hard to adapt Lovecraftian stories onto screen, how Scott first got into Lovecraft and many other aspects, so either tune in next week, or support GCC on Patreon!   Some recommendations for starting Lovecraft are; Dagon, From Beyond, The Hound, Rats In The Walls, Horror At Red Hook, Herbert West: Reanimator & The Tomb – Scott recommended picking up the Wordsworth collection called Haunter Of The Dark as a starting point. S.T. Joshi’s Lovecraft biographies are ones to pick up if you want to know even more about Lovecraft! 20th Century Geek - Stories Out Of Time & Space - Twitter: @20thCenturyGeek Last time Mike & Scott tried discussing HP Lovecraft, they ended up talking about sci-fi crossovers, special effects and loads more, so check out episode 107 of GCC for that! Find Mike’s other show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon on Spotify & the other podcast apps on the feed of Comics In Motion. Episodes are out every Saturday; episodes 0-50 are out now, with ep 50 being a Q&A episode with Mike & Megan, 49 featured Bounty Hunters pursuing Darth Vader and ep 48 featured the munity on Mon Cala (Ackbar’s homeworld)! Previous episodes topics include Lando comics, the Journals of Old Ben Kenobi, Count Dooku, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, how C-3PO got his red arm, book reviews & more - https://spoti.fi/3kPcyJH  In the previous episode of GCC; number 121, Mike spoke with Dominic Pace, aka Gekko The Bounty Hunter from chapters 1 & 3 of The Mandalorian, as well as Glyn Davies who connected them – Dominic talks about his role in the Mandalorian, how it’s been touring and meeting members of the Star Wars community, how cool the new special effects LED screen “The Volume” was during filming, the parallels Dominic sees in the Star Wars universe to his own life, some of the people in Star Wars he’s met, Dominic’s positive outlook on life and more!   Check out Mike’s Patreon, where he releases 2 episodes of his show “Afterthoughts” a week (with 2 episodes are *FREE* to anyone: season 1 of The Witcher and their review of The Phantom Menace), plus there are unsplit full-length episodes of GCC, additional photos (including early access to photos of comics for this very show) and more, so if you want to support the show and get more content, check it out at http://patreon.com/genuinechitchat  Instagram – Twitter – Facebook – YouTube – Stitcher - Podbean - Spotify   You can also email Mike at GenuineChitChat@outlook.com with any reviews, comments or suggestions.

Lovecraft largely pioneered the genre of cosmic horror... But he was also like, super racist. In this episode, we examine The Shadow Over Innsmouth, one of Lovecraft's more famous tales. So while editing this episode, we realized that we kept referring to the series of games that we talk about in this episode as the Arkham Files, when in actuality the name of the series is the Arkham Horror Files! Hopefully everyone will be able to forgive the faux pas. But in this episode, we’re talking about Eldritch Horror and Arkham Horror Third Edition. In our Broader View, we talk about what we like about games that share a universe, and what other games we would like to see expand their universe into other games. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about 1972’s Asylum and 1974’s The Beast Must Die. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror, including the recent VHS Fest at the Mahoning Drive, seeing the films Crawl, Midsommar, Annabelle Comes Home, Perfection, and I Am Mother, the trailers for Rabid, Jacob’s Ladder, and It: Chapter 2, and the announcement that Marvel Studios would be producing a new Blade film. We begin by talking about Asylum. We start by giving a rough outline of the film, and then talking about what makes a good anthology film, or in this case a bad anthology film. We talk about each individual story and discuss what we liked about each vignette. We briefly talk about the impact Robert Bloch had on horror as a whole, including his work dealing with the Cthulu Mythos. The influences of the various segments are discussed, both in what they influence and in what influenced them. The question of whether or not the film should be given some slack because it was arguably the first horror anthology film is delved into. Next up is The Beast Must Die. We begin by giving another “hard and fast Horror Business” rule when it comes to horror movies, in this case that a werewolf movie is only as good as it’s werewolf design, and in turn we criticize the design of the werewolf of this movie, which is essentially a large dog with extra fur added. We discuss the plot of the movie and how transparent it is from the gate. We touch upon the films attempts at being a “whodunit” style film but doesn’t drop any clues, how the red herrings in the movie were clearly obvious, and the annoying gimmick that was added in post-production. We weren’t big fans of this movie, so there’s not much substance to what we’re talking about besides tearing the movie apart. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks always to Justin Miller, Jacob Roberts, and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions and fliers, Mike Smaczylo for the shirts and fliers (you can check more of his work out at here), and also thanks to Josh Alvarez for the theme song, Chris, Brad, Alexis, and LVAC for the support and buttons (check them out at www.xlvacx.com), and a HUGE thank you to anyone who retweeted us or shared something on Facebook that we posted. Good to see you again. In this episode, Tim is joined by Gabriel Fuentes to help co-host a long talk about the Eldritch horrors known as the Great Old Ones from the Cthulu Mythos. There are so many of these madness-inducing entities that we barely scratch the surface, but it's interesting to see just how varied and quite frankly bizarre they can be. The backbone of Lovecraft's Mythos is the philosophy of Cosmicism, in which can be defined as us living in an uncaring and indifferent universe where humanity isn't even really remotely capable of grasping the big picture of the cosmos, and on the grand scheme of things, humans are no better than insects. This dark philosophy echoes throughout Lovecraft's work, but should not be confused with nihilism. What it really comes down to is the nightmarish reality of Cosmic Horror in Lovecraft's mind was a mirror of his fear of the unknown. So buckle up because it's time to get weird. “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”

In this episode, we're going to delve into H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos featuring the Outer Gods. Cosmic Horror is an important sub-genre of Horror, which can also be defined as Lovecraftian Horror, Eldritch Horror, or Cosmicism. Cosmic Horror is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Existential Nihilism, and Philosophical Pessimism, with a consistent theme of madness to those who view what their minds aren't ready to comprehend. In Lovecraft's mythos universe human beings are entirely insignificant and inconsequential on a cosmic scale. With countless civilizations throughout the universe coming and going in meaningless existences under the watchful eyes of entities so ancient and powerful we humans seem less than ants to them in comparison. Lovecraft's writings would spark an obsession that is still very prominent till this day, and Tim will go into detail of the most powerful of these Lovecraftian horrors, the Outer Gods. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the madness. "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." - H.P. Lovecraft

Thanks to The Lovecraft eZine at http://lovecraftzine.com/ for hosting The Lovecraft Geek page: http://lovecraftzine.com/the-lovecraft-geek-robert-m-price-podcast/. Questions for this podcast: When did Lovecraft's writings start gaining popularity? Do you think there is any validity to the claim - made famous in Shea and Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy! - that the "Great Old Ones" are somehow derived from the secret lore of Illuminati Cultists? What do you think the film makers may have missed in Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown? It might be fun/interesting to discuss the sudden appearance of the Azathoth monument in Oklahoma. How old were you when you started reading Lovecraft? What is your favorite Lovecraft story? What is your favorite Lovecraftian story not written by Lovecraft? Will Lovecraft ever achieve his rightful place in the ranks of America's literary greats? What Anthology has The Shambler from the Stars, The Haunter of the Dark, and The Shadow from the Steeple? Do you agree with the thesis that von Daniken, et al, owe their inspiration to HPL, or to other literary or fictional, or primarily non-fictional, sources, and not at all to Lovecraft? I was wondering if you'd expand on your "Teenage fundamentalist" years and how you discovered Lovecraft, and how you reconciled the Cthulu Mythos with your Christian beliefs?
