On this episode, continuing with the New Year, New Fear series to talk about Brian Yuzna's directorial debut, Society (1989). This film has lots of black humor, loads of gore and is cited as being influential in body horror films. Plus you get to hear my love for special effects legend Screaming Mad George. Kim, a female reporter, investigates the death of an enflamed woman jumping off a building, leading to her involvement in a ritual sacrifice by a coven of witches during Christmas time.Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation is by far the biggest deviation from the Silent Night, Deadly Night series and definitely the weirdest so far. We don't expect much else from Brian Yuzna, but with Clint Howard playing a character named Ricky, where it's completely left open if there's any continuity from the Ricky in the previous movies and the addition of body horror and bugs into known slasher films is a bit of a surprise. Not to mention, Christmas is barely mentioned in this movie that is a listed sequel of Christmas horror films. There is much to call out in this movie, but it is very entertaining. The celebration of the season continues with the movie in which Rae continually forgets that it was supposed to be set at Christmas. Have you ever wanted to see Clint Howard have sex? Well, if that's a yes, there's Brian Yuzna's 1990 offering, Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation. With special effects by Screaming Mad George, this is an absolute baffling watch. #frombeyond #stuartgordon #jeffreycombs #barbaracrampton #brianyuzna #cultmovies #cultclassic #cultmoviereview #bodyhorror In 1986, Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton all reunited for their follow-up to their unexpected hit Re-Animator. While Yuzna was keen to do a direct sequel to Re-Animator (which he would later direct himself), Gordon and the rest of the team wanted to do an original story, piggy-backing off what they had previously learned and delivering something fresh and new. Unfortunately, despite a sizeable investment from producer Charles Band, the film failed to recoup it's $4.5M budget, largely due to the fact that in addition to tepid market, the film failed to receive an R rating from the MPAA, who insisted on labeling it NC-17 and thus drastically lowering its distribution potential. Thankfully, the film became notorious on the VHS Video Nasties circuit, and later in 2013, the film received it's much needed restoration, restoring it to it's full run-time by adding every available scene that had been cut (sadly, there are still some sequences that were lost to the annals of time). Join Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold as they analyze what makes this movie such a fun, slimy, gory classic of mid-80's body horror filmmaking, right here on Esoterica Cinema.

Re-Animator (1985), From Beyond (1986), and Dagon (2001) Bringing the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft to the screen is not an easy task. Much of the horror Lovecraft talked about wasn't described or explained too much, leaving it up to the reader. But when director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and writer Dennis Paoli got together to adapt Lovecraft's 1922 story "Herbert West - Re-Animator" for a movie, they changed cinema forever. Not only did they show us more than Lovecraft would ever dream of, they created a perfect blend of outrageous horror, gore, and bizarre imagery that would immediately put them in the horror history books. The following year, they took another short story, From Beyond, first published in 1934, and showed even more strange, bizarre, and gooey things we'd seen before, going beyond then what the short story told us. Then 15 years later, these three deranged creators returned to Lovecraft to take us to a fishing village filled with very unusual citizens, in 2001's Dagon. While Gordon's filmography might not be filled with classic after classic, when he hit a home run, usually he was working with Yuzna and Paoli. Films mentioned in this episode: Black Gloves (2017), Color Out of Space (2019), Dagon (2001), Dust Devil (1992), From Beyond (1986), Halloween (1978), Hardware (1990), Lord of Tears (2013), Re-Animator (1985), Shrews Nest (2014), To Let (2006), Witching and Bitching (2013)

Brian Yuzna's film Society took a long time to find distribution in the US, and disappeared from theaters just as quickly as it arrived. Thankfully, with the advent of VHS, the film was able to find its eventual audience in the 90's and 00's. Featuring solid direction from Brain Yuzna, solid 80's acting from Billy Warlock, and some of the best practical effects ever committed to celluloid thanks to fx maestro Screaming Mad George and his talented team, Society may not be a film for everyone, but it's one you won't soon forget. #cultmovies #cultclassic #moviereview #society #brianyuzna #screamingmadgeorge

This week, Dave and Bryan take a good long look at the gory 80's horror comedy classic, Re-Animator from director Stuart Gordon and producer, Brian Yuzna. What they find is, unfortunately, not much more to talk about than what's right there on the surface and the unfortunately troubling sexual politics of a movie that's operating head and shoulders above its contemporaries as far as sophistication and a sense of humor goes. You also get a good deal of background on H.P. Lovecraft, to whom the horror genre as we know it today owes a tremendous debt. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

In this very special Further Viewing episode, we're going to take a good look at one of the weirdest horror franchises to ever exist. After a controversial first offering and a so-bad-its-good sequel, the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT series inexplicably still managed to produce an additional three films, all released straight-to-video. While the first of these releases, SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 3: BETTER WATCH OUT! concludes the Ricky Caldwell storyline from the first two films, Parts 4 & 5 (INITIATION and THE TOYMAKER, respectively) tell standalone stories set against the backdrop of Christmas, courtesy of SOCIETY and BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR filmmaker Brian Yuzna. The story behind these sequels is as bizarre as the films themselves, so as a little added bonus to our recent Cinema Shock Christmas Special, our gift to you is an episode exploring the history behind the remainder of the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT franchise. Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. This episode was written, produced and edited by Gary Horne, and Justin Bishop.. Six Weeks Of Holiday Horror continues with "Silent Night Deadly Night 5" (1991) — AKA the movie that finally broke Mickey Rooney. We're not sure why this movie isn't talked about more, but you better bet we're happy as heck to give it a little love this Christmas season. Some of you might not even know there are more than two in this hit-or-miss series, but we think y'all might have some fun with this particular entry, mostly for Mickey's insane, paid-in-whiskey performance, the special effects by everyones 90's go-to for low-budget horror, Screaming Mad George, and a bonkers script by both director and long-time Tarantino friend Martin Kitrosser AND horror icon Brian Yuzna, who also helmed the prior sequel as well as so many other beloved horror classics. We say, you're never going to see Mickey Rooney dressed up as a killer Santa ever again in your life, so watch it for that, at LEAST. We hope December is treating you all very well thus far, everybody. We look forward to sharing more of our love of horror with you as the weeks roll on! HMSG Interview Dennis Paoli - "Suitable Flesh"DENNIS PAOLI achieved his greatest enduring cult popularity by penning the wickedly witty scripts for two superior 80s H.P. Lovecraft adaptations directed by noted horror genre icon Stuart Gordon: the terrific "Re-Animator" and its equally excellent follow-up "From Beyond." Paoli and Gordon first crossed paths working for the experimental Organic Theater in Chicago. Besides those two films, Paoli has also written "The Pit and the Pendulum," "Castle Freak," "Dagon" and the "Masters of Horror" episodes "H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch-House" and "The Black Cat" for Gordon. Paoli has done several screenplays for prolific low-budget movie producer Charles Band: a segment of the horror anthology "Pulse Pounders," "Spellcaster," "Meridian," and "Ghoulies II." He collaborated with Larry Cohen and Nicholas St. John on the script for Abel Ferrara's supremely creepy and underrated sci-fi/horror winner "Body Snatchers." In addition to those credits, Paoli wrote the gruesome "The Dentist" for Brian Yuzna. Outside of writing screenplays, Dennis Paoli has a regular day job as a Writing Instructor and Coordinator of the Hunter College Writing Center at Hunter College in New York. He's especially knowledgeable on Irish literature and has taught a course on Gothic fiction. We got a chance to talk about his new film SUITABLE FLESH (2023). Starring & Produced by Barbara Crampton. The spirit of Stuart Gordon lives on with a new Lovecraftian inspired tale directed by Joe Lynch. An unconventional, and unethical patient & doctor affair may actually be the result of an ancient supernatural curse! We hope you enjoy this fresh interview!Support the show

Today on the 5: A listener who I talk to over on Discord linked a movie to me that I strangely don't think I've seen before. It's called Necronomicon: Book Of The Dead, and if you like films like Re-Animator or From Beyond, you'll probably enjoy this Lovecraftian anthology flick.
Two years in one episode! Well, it really does make sense. You'll see.First, director Stuart Gordon brings us some morbid, deadpan humor, based on the work of H. P. Lovecraft. And let me tell you, Jeffrey Combs is absolute perfection as Herbert West. Who would have thought that bringing corpses, and decapitated heads, back to life, would be so amusing? And how about that green color of the re-agent serum? Can I paint a room that color, please? Oh, yeah. We're talking about Re-Animator (1985), here. Then from there, Stuart Gordon is back! And so is H.P. Lovecraft! And Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton from Re-Animator! It's like a family reunion with all of your favorites. But they've brought along the resonator. A device that stimulates the pineal gland. To the point where it just might burst out of the forehead of someone who has had a little too much stimulation. And let me tell you something else, it's not a pretty sight. It's like something, From Beyond (1986)!And of course, it wouldn't be the Summer of the 80s without Common Craig's Top 5 horrors from 1985 and 1986!
In this mind-bending episode, we delve into the twisted world of "Society" (1989), a cult horror film that defies expectations and will leave you questioning reality.Directed by Brian Yuzna, "Society" takes us on a journey with teenager Bill Whitney, played by Billy Warlock, as he discovers the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface of his seemingly perfect upper-class society. As Bill peels back the layers of his affluent community, he unravels a nightmarish conspiracy that challenges his perception of social norms and pushes the boundaries of grotesque body horror. We explore the film's unique blend of satire, social commentary, and shocking visuals, delving into its exploration of class divisions, conformity, and the horrors that lie beneath a seemingly polished veneer.Through our discussion, we dissect some of the film's most memorable and grotesque scenes, including the infamous "shunting" sequence that has become a hallmark of the movie's disturbing imagery. So join Keller, Taylor and myself as we unravel the enigmatic layers of "Society" and dive into its unsettling depths. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this edition of Parallax Views, the 1989 horror film Society has become a cult classic for it's wild mix of body horror, dark humor, satire of high society, and class warfare politics. Joining us to discuss that movie, as well as his work on other horror movies past and present, is the film's co-write Zeph E. Daniel. In the second hour, Zeph and I discuss his return to screenwriting with the 2021 horror/thriller GIRL NEXT, a story of a young woman's fight to survive after being kidnapped by human traffickers that gets very strange when demonic entities, body-altering drugs, quantum physics, and a sinister MKULTRA-style government experiment are thrown into the plot's mix. Among the topics covered in our conversation: - How Zeph became involved in screenwriting and early sci-fi writing - Working with producer/director Brian Yuzna, known for his body-horror films including the Re-Animator franchise and Society - How Society's initial story involved a Satanic cult rather than strange, alien-like shapeshifting beings posing as rich humans in Beverly Hills - Satirizing the shallowness of the wealthy and Beverly Hills culture - Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation and it's witchcraft plot involving the demon Lilith - The length of the filming shoot for the Yuzna-made movies Zeph worked on - Zeph's thoughts on Bride of Re-Animator - The class warfare element of Society, Zeph's interview with the left-wing publication Jacobin, and the exploitation of the poor by the rich in Society's story - Actress Devin DeVasquez's "Clarissa" character in Society - The differences between Zeph's original story for Society and the movie itself - Special effects artist Screaming Mad George and the infamous "The Shunting" ritual scene in Society - Girl Next and the story of how Zeph formed Crazed House Ltd. with director Larry Wade Carell - Zeph's belief in spiritual warfare - Zeph's thoughts and feelings on his work being rejected by the Christian community despite his being a born again Christian; the story of how his evangelical Christian novel Lamb was rejected by the Christian community; the fear of creativity that exists within some Christian circles - The next Crazed House Ltd. movie and the big name horror star legend that'll have a voice role in the film - Experiences at Texas Frightmare Weekend - Problems with wanting to express one's authentic creative self and still getting funding to make a movie - Sex in cinema; the sexual scenes in Girl Next - An explanation of the body-altering drug that's central to Girl Next's plot; how quantum physics and simulation theory play into Girl Next and it's upcoming sequels - Zeph's "Special Thank You" credit in the serial killer movie Ed Gein starring Steve Railsback (The Stuntman; Helter Skelter) - How Zeph works with people who do not share his beliefs about religion or his personal story - The cult classic status of Society today and the different types of people that have come to love the film - Society as a movie that was soft banned in the U.S. but very popular in Europe - Zeph's speculations on what happened to Society's protagonist Bill Whitley (played by Billy Warlock) after the events of the story - The trials and tribulations of making Girl Next - Zeph's early experiences on the radical left - Power elites and oppression of working people - The infamous "The rich have always sucked off low-class shit like you" line in Society that crystalizes it's class conflict themes - And much, much more!
What exactly are rich assholes doing behind closed doors, when we don't see them out on their yachts or racing hot air balloons? Ron, Steve, and John take a look at a trio of movies that offer possible answers: Brian Yuzna's wild 1989 body horror social satire, Society; Mark Mylod's delectable black comedy with a message, The Menu; and the latest star-studded Benoit Blanc mystery from Rian Johnson, Glass Onion.
The elite are literally a different breed in Brian Yuzna’s cult classic film about the perils of popularity and privilege. In this episode, Andrea and Alex dive into the mystique that surrounds the wealthy and explore why they need the rest of us to survive. Become a Patron! REQUIRED READING Society. Dir. Brian […]
