“People think sequels are easier, and I'm like, ‘No, no, it's much harder. It is much harder to write.' They have never written sequels, those people, because you need to do everything as well as the first and yet better, and go to new places, follow all the world rules, but create new ones. I mean, it's just so many balls in the air,” says Meg LeFauve, co-writer for Inside Out 2, along with Dave Holstein.  In this special live episode from the Writers Guild Foundation Library, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein talk about tackling a whole new set of challenges as they wrote the sequel to the beloved movie Inside Out. They also discuss the 5-year Pixar development process that includes the concept of failing fast. “They really want you pushing to things that are new and innovative, so they expect you to fail. They actually want you to fail but they want you to do that quickly, right? Because we only have five years, so it's always like, hurry up, hurry up. You know, fail. Go again. Go again,” she says. Holstein shared some very personal advice for writing coming of age stories, like the Inside Out movies: get micro-focused.  “Sometimes it's better to zoom in than to zoom out. For me, it helps to zoom in on a detail and let the detail be a microcosm for the rest of it. I know that when we were writing this film, I was thinking about my anxiety at that age and where that came from. I had a speech impediment, I had a stutter, so I hated Spanish class because I had to read out loud, and my stutter always came out in front of people, which made me very, very anxious. And I feel like, for Riley, there's a three-day hockey camp that could determine the rest of her life. That's where I sort of sunk into and if I was writing a different story about me, I would have gone into those details. But for me, it was about finding something very specific and very small,” says Holstein. To hear more about the writing process, listen to the podcast.

Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now thirteen and just when Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and the rest of Riley's emotions (Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear and Liza Lapira as Disgust) think they have everything running smoothly, a new crew of emotions (Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui and Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment) arrive to make the trials and tribulations of being a teenager even more chaotic.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 36 m, is rated PG and currently streaming on Disney+.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#InsideOut2  #Pixar  #Disney+  #KelseyMann  #MegLeFauve  #DaveHolstein  # KensingtonTallman  #Riley  # AmyPoehler  #Joy  #PhyllisSmith    #Sadness  #LewisBlack  #Anger  #TonyHale  #Fear  #LizaLapira  #Disgust  #MayaHawke  #Anxiety  #AyoEdebiri  #Envy  #AdèleExarchopoulos  #Ennui  #PaulWalterHauser  #Embarrassment  @Disney+  #FridayFamilyFilmNight    --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

Edgar Bronfman Jr. has withdrawn his bid for Paramount, and as the Venice Film Festival kicks off, Italy's increasingly right-wing government is courting Hollywood productions. Additionally, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein, the writers of the Pixar megahit Inside Out 2, join Kim Masters to discuss the importance of putting animated movies in theaters instead of only on streaming platforms — as former Disney CEO Bob Chapek did during his tenure. It follows 13-year-old Riley as a few new feelings are added to the mix as she enters her teen years: Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Anxiety. Hey everyone, welcome back to another review! Inside Out 2, the sequel to one of the most celebrated films Pixar (a FANTASTIC studio) has ever put out, has now hit theaters but the hype for this one just hasn't been there. I was looking forward to it and was very curious about what Pixar had to say about emotions during our teenage years as opposed to being a child but it's weird that it took 9 years. And an even weirder choice was waiting 9 years and not aging Riley up a little more. Anyways, we now have the film. Does it live up to the original? Find out in this review! “Honestly, and I know it sounds sentimental, but when I became a writer, I held Pixar out as my beacon,” says Meg LeFauve. “At the time, I thought some of the best storytelling was coming out of Pixar and I had heard about the Brain Trust room. I thought the scariest, most thrilling thing I could do is be in that room as a writer with those Story Brains.” Everybody told Meg it was impossible and that “they don't even hire writers.” She adds, “But, you have to do what your gut tells you and you don't go in a straight line, but I eventually got to go in and meet on a project.” She didn't get hired on the first meeting but did land the job on Inside Out.  Dave Holstein says, “In college, I remember watching the short film collections from Pixar and being endlessly moved by the work they were doing and that was one of my big career goals. 1. Run a TV show. 2. Write a Pixar movie. These things seemed too far away.” Holstein initially met on Toy Story 4, didn't get the first job, but was asked to meet on Onward and then, Inside Out 2. “It was a great combination of scheduling luck and having been on their list for a long time.” The screenwriter created the Jim Carrey series Kidding between Pixar meetings.  As far as ongoing work with Pixar, the writers say you really need to be comfortable in a Writer's Room and you need to be able to think and pitch ideas on the spot. “It doesn't mean you have to come from television, but there's that element to it. You're with the Director and you come out of a screening and you have to pitch ideas how to fix it on your feet.” Many writers start as “weekly” pitchers. “They want to know if you fit into this flow. Can you pitch on your feet? A lot of writers listen and then pitch so there's no one way to do it, but that's an element of working there that isn't for all writers,” confirms LeFauve. “Like TV, the job is to serve a greater vision,” adds Holstein.
