"The Office" is a sitcom that follows the everyday lives of employees working at Dunder Mifflin, a mundane paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013 and is the American adaptation of the British show of the same name. The show is known for its mockumentary-style format, complete with talking head interviews, shaky camera work, and characters often breaking the fourth wall by looking directly at the camera. The show grew to become one television's biggest sitcoms in its initial run. Years later, The Office's availability on streaming platforms introduced it to a new generation of viewers further boosting its popularity to new levels. It consistently ranks among the most-watched shows on these platforms. But was this one great right from episode 1? Listen as the S1E1 boys deep dive the show's pilot episode. Like the dinosaurs, WE'RE BACK! The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy are back on the mics to talk about your favorite movies after a little bit of a sabbatical, starting with a look -introspectively- at the latest Disney-Pixar sequel in theaters, Inside Out 2.
Kenny and Mike begin the seventh season of Faithspotting by discussing and spotting faith reflected in the newest Pixar film, Inside Out 2. Considering how much Mike and Kenny enjoyed the film and thought the message of Inside Out, that all emotions have purpose and value, both entered the theater with high expectations and hopes Inside Out 2 would be a worthy sequal. Faith Spotted: The teaching in Psalm 139, and other places, that we are children of God and are wonderfully made even when considering our imperfections and brokenness. How living this teaching allows for true joy and a rich and joyfilled life. Justification by Christ through faith rather than one's deeds. While not possible, the drive to justify oneself reflects a lack of faith in God's assurance of grace and love. The place and purpose of confession and the possibility of repentance and redemption.
Talk about emotional stakes. This week, we share our (ahem) feelings on Inside Out 2, the direct sequel to Pixar's breakout hit Inside Out from 2015. This time with Kelsey Mann taking over directorial duties in his debut alongside screenwriters Meg LaFauve and Dave Holstein. The film features the voice talents of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan from the previous film with newcomers Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser. Inside Out 2 opened to huge box office on June 14 and has a 96-minute runtime. Our intro music this week is “Non Peut-Etre” by daoud. They touch on how this movie relates to their own mental health journeys, what is a kids film, how great this film is for small local theaters, and how you should totally see this movie on the big screen. Hey everyone, welcome back to another review! Inside Out 2, the sequel to one of the most celebrated films Pixar (a FANTASTIC studio) has ever put out, has now hit theaters but the hype for this one just hasn't been there. I was looking forward to it and was very curious about what Pixar had to say about emotions during our teenage years as opposed to being a child but it's weird that it took 9 years. And an even weirder choice was waiting 9 years and not aging Riley up a little more. Anyways, we now have the film. Does it live up to the original? Find out in this review! Inside Out 2: Directed by: Kelsey Mann Screenplay by: Dave Holstein, Meg LeFauve Produced by: Mark Nielsen Executive Producers: Pete Docter, Jonas Rivera, Dan Scanlon Music by: Andrea Datzman Cinematography by: Adam Habib, Jonathan Pytko Editing by: Maurissa Horowitz Casting by: Natalie Lyon, Kevin Reher Production Design by: Jason Deamer Cast: Maya Hawke, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Ayo Edebiri, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser Synopsis: Teenager Riley's mind headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! As the Takeaway comes to an end, we get one last set of movie prescriptions from Kristen Meinzer, a culture critic and host of the podcast "By The Book" and Rafer Guzman, a film critic for Newsday, and they bring us movie prescriptions about embracing change and fresh starts. Together Kristen and Rafer are the co-hosts of the podcast, Movie Therapy. KRISTEN'S PICKS: Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, 2021 When middle aged best friends Barb and Star lose their jobs, they decide that a restorative vacation in Vista Del Mar is just what they need to help them ease into the next chapter. But things don't go quite as planned - with mysterious men, villains, and more throwing monkey wrenches into their getaway. Fortunately their friendship, optimism, and sense of humor keeps them strong and ready for anything that's thrown their way. The movie stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. The lesson: Things in life don't always go as planned. Sometimes we lose a job, and then things get worse from there. But leaning on our friends, and laughing at the absurdity of life can make it all more manageable. Sister Act, 1992 Whoopie Goldberg stars as a nightclub singer who's forced to go into witness protection in a convent after witnessing a mob hit. While there, she struggles with the regimented life of the nuns. But thanks to her outstanding musical talents and charisma, she's able to turn the convent choir into a soulful chorus complete with a Motown repertoire. The lesson: Sometimes we're thrown into situations that feel wildly out of our purview. But that doesn't mean we can't handle them. In fact, those situations combined with our unique skills mean that we might excel in new ways. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, 2010 This documentary follows one year in the life of Joan Rivers. It was filmed when Rivers was 75, and coming out of what she considered a down year...after 40+ years of ups and downs as an actor, writer, and comedian. Along the way, she reveals some of her darker moments, biggest struggles, and incredible work ethic...along with lots of her biting wit. The lesson: Even a legend like Joan Rivers has had lots of down years...times that could have broken her...but she chose to keep working, evolving, and trying new things. I'll also add that this film has a special place in my heart because when she was on her press tour for it, Rafer and I got to interview her...and she ended up being our first celebrity interview for the Movie Date podcast. RAFER'S PICKS: Harold and Maude, 1971 This is kind of the original cult movie, from 1971 -- before Rocky Horror, before Pink Flamingos, there was Harold and Maude. It's the story of Harold, played by Bud Cort, and he's a very rich, very mobrid young man who spends most of his time staging fake suicides to upset his mother. He hangs himself, cuts his throat, immolates himself and so on. For fun he attends random funerals, and that's where he meets an 80-year-old woman named Maude, played by the great Ruth Gordon. And Maude is a rebel, even kind of an outlaw -- she's kind of a hippie, she poses nude for artists and for some reason she love to steal cars. She just loves to live. And these two start a friendship and despite their vast age difference, they fall in love. There was a time when you could see this movie at an art-house theater just about once a week, and I pretty much did, but I think it got oversaturated and it's really fallen off the radar these days. But I think it's worth revisiting. I like this movie because it seems morbid and perverse, and the humor is very dark. But as it goes on, it gets more and more tender and sincere, and these two characters start to feel very real. And in the end, Maude changes Harold, she gives him a new way of looking at life, she gives him a new spirit and she gives him a new way of expressing himself. She teaches him to play the banjo (and like Steve Martin always said, it's impossible to be in a bad mood when you play a banjo.) And the final scene in the movie, which involves that banjo, it's a really hopeful, happy scene that tell us Harold is about to embark on a whole new life. Castaway, 2000 Probably most adult humans have seen Castaway but just to refresh you: Tom Hanks plays a guy named Chuck Noland. Happy, likeable guy, works for Fed Ex, he has a girlfriend, played by Helen Hunt, they're both deeply in love. He's really got it all. And then he's in a plane crash. He wakes up on a tiny island, somewhere in Pacific Ocean, surrounded by junk and debris from the plane, completely alone. And he's stuck there for FOUR YEARS. And of course, the most famous thing about this film is probably Wilson, a soccer ball that becomes Chuck's best friend as Chuck starts to go a little crazy. The scenes that always get me are in the second half of the film. Spoiler alert, Chuck gets rescued. And now he's facing a world that moved on without him. His girlfriend is married! She thought he was dead, so she he had to move on. (What a scene that is -- I can't believe Hunt didn't get an Oscar nomination for that.) Anyway, in these scenes, Chuck actually starts to miss his life on the island. He misses sleeping on the hard ground, he misses the act of trying to spear a fish for food. And that really struck me as true. The thing about people is, they can adapt to anything. And once they do, they love it. But then things change and you have to adapt again. So I guess the lesson of this film is that no matter where you are, you aren't at the end, you're always in the middle. You're always between the past and the future. But if you want to keep living, you've got to get to that next future. Inside Out, 2015 I loved this movie so much back in 2015 that I just fell all over myself praising it. I'm pretty sure it was number one on my top ten that year. It's the story of two emotions, one named Joy, with the voice of Amy Poehler, and one named Sadness, voiced by Phyllis Smith. And this is your classic Pixar buddy comedy, with two opposing personalities, and it all takes place in these imaginary realms of your brain and your personality, like the Train of Thought and Friendship Island and Dream Productions, which is basically a movie studio in the mind. And it does a great job of bringing abstract concepts to life in these really, clever funny ways. But the reason I picked this movie is because Joy and Sadness live in the brain of a pre-teen girl named Riley. Her family has just moved from Minnesota to San Francisco when her father gets a new job. It's a huge change, Riley doesn't want to leave her old life, and she's afraid of what her new life might be. So what we're seeing as Joy and Sadness go on their adventure, is what's happening in the mind of Riley as she grapples with change. And I really like how this movie shows that Sadness is important -- you have to feel it, you have to express it, and you can't just bury it or shut it off, if you're going to move forward on to the next thing.

Crying helps me slow down and obsess over the weight of life's problems. And boy does this movie make me cry! I was watching this on my phone in the doctor's waiting room and I was biting my tongue go hard trying not to spill tears. When this movie came out in 2015, my daughter was about 18 months old, too I've resonated with this movie from the beginning. I was also a big fan of Pixar Animation Studios back then, as they were still consistently churning out solid emotional hits as good as Toy Story and Ratatouille. Re-watching this movie now, seven years later, it was probably even harder to watch as my kids have collected their own core memories and developed their own behaviors and personalities. I can tell you which emotion rules their inner headquarters - just as I can tell you which one rules mine and my wife's. Some movies are timeless, some are flawless, but this one is the only one I can think of that I consider to be pure ingenious. Not only is it one of the most emotional movies I've seen, but it's the smartest. Physchologists love this movie, as it puts words and images to something so hard to explain to anyone young or old - our emotions. If you haven't seen this movie, go fix that this vey minute. Prepare yourself for one of the most unique film experiences of your life. And make sure you're alone, unless you don't mind crying in public. Inside Out stars the voice talents of Amy Pohler, Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and Lewis Black. It was written by Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen, and Meg LeFauve. It was directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronnie Del Carmen. On Rotten Tomatoes, Inside Out has an impressive critics' score of 89% and an audience score of 89%, which I consider to be strangely low. With me today, I have with me Doctor Michele Wright, who was the USA Today Woman of the Year for Arkansas, winner of the Global Leadership Award for Nations of Women Change Makers in 2021, amongst many other accolades and accomplishments. If I were to list them all, we'd be here all day, so Michele, please introduce yourself to our listeners by telling everyone a little about yourself, what you do for work, and for fun. Questions About the Movie: Tell me a little bit about the process of getting the Water Tales made, and how it had to do with the movie Inside Out. What about Inside Out speaks to you the most? Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness tend to all be negative emotions. Isn't it interesting that the one positive emotion we have is Joy? Yet, that's the one we're all chasing after. Can you explain how we can find positivity in all the other emotions? This movie is filled with lasts. Riley's last goofy moment with her parents, her last hockey game in Michigan, her last time playing with her friend... we often miss those last moments in our own lives. Is there any way we can clock those for posterity? The scene with the mom and dad's differing emotions and thoughts is pretty hilarious and accurate to my life. In what ways do you and Terry have different trains of thought where you're not communicating properly? How do you go about correcting this? Without any pun intended, this is a highly emotional movie. What part, if any, moves you the most? Questions for Application Did you go through any life-changing seasons like Riley did in the movie? How did you respond to the changes? There are no antagonists in the movie, but at one point Mom says, "If you could keep smiling it would be a big help." How can sentences like this be damaging to children? Did you have an imaginary friend like Bing Bong? If so, do you think imaginary friends are beneficial to children? This movie is about rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep, which is a Bible verse taken straight out of Romans. How do you see this pertaining to real life? I finish up this episode by asking Michele 5 questions about the movie. You can check out Michele's Water Tales podcast here. "You know why we, uh why we like to be hugged? The way I see it, it sets a limit on the pain. You know? Puts a perimeter around it." The OA's Chapter 7 episode, "Empire of Light" continues the story all in the present day, as OA receives another terrible dream or possible premonition while dealing with the potential trauma she might've caused to her adoptive parents, Abel and Nancy Johnson, that fateful day she left over 7 years ago. In the mean time, the Crestwood 5 is working on perfecting the movements for interdimensional travel while Steve's horrific actions has finally caught up to him. Although the entirety of "Empire of Light" stays within the present timeline in which we don't get to see what happens to Homer, Renata, Scott, and Rachel, we get an emotionally resonant episode about dealing with our past traumas and how that festers into our current daily lives. The chemistry between Phyllis Smith's BBA and Patrick Gibson's Steve soars here with such tidy and timely humor albeit in a very serious situation. The conclusion to the episode is incredibly chilling because of how high the emotional stakes are, especially considering that this may be the last time we get to hear The OA tell her story. "Tonight, I will finish telling my story. Are you ready?"

Today we talked about the review of 2020 with Phyllis Smith-Knight
Todays podcast is about the ups and downs of 2020. the events that shaped this year with host Phyllis Knight.
This week we're joined by Elspeth Barron (again!) to discuss the perpetually tear-jerking Pixar film, Inside Out.Inside Out follows 11-year-old Riley as she navigates the challenge of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. We see her emotions, in her mind, as they try to keep control of the situation and keep Riley joyful! The film is directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen, and it stars Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, and Lewis Black. Our staging takes its cues from the tradition of Pantomime, working with high-tech elements but with an overall lo-fi aesthetic that relies on painted sets and physical set-dressing, embracing audience interaction and accessible theatrical language.Let us know what you thought of the episode on social media or email in. Would you have taken a more minimalist approach? Would you aim for a higher-budget production? Do you think the stigma around Pantomime would prevent the emotional resonance of the film shining through?Twitter/Instagram: @maybeulikeitFacebook: @maybeyoulikeitEmail: info@maybeyoulikeit.co.ukCaleb is on twitter, instagram and letterboxd @caleblebsterJake is on twitter and letterboxd @jakereeshElspeth is on twitter @elspethrebeccaFind out more about us at https://www.maybeyoulikeit.co.ukMusic is from Kavana CrossleyMaybe You Like It, Maybe You Don't Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. This week we're breaking down Phyllis' Wedding. We are joined by this episode's director, Ken Whittingham, who shares his memories of this episode and his time on The Office. And we aren't stopping there, the shimmy queen herself, Phyllis Smith, sends in audio memories for this episode as well. We jump in by discussing Pam clocking Phyllis using all of her wedding ideas, we get a 'shallow dive' on Ivan Pavlov, and we get a Dwight talking head that will be important later in the show series. Then, we go to the room where the fart happened and Phyllis Smith answers all your questions about that scene. Finally, ladies share some funny wedding memories, chat about that hilarious bouquet swat, and we end with a deleted scene that proves Phyllis didn't steal every wedding idea from Pam. Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
Pixar's Inside Out dominated the Annie Awards over the weekend, winning 10 awards out of the 11 categories it was nominated in. The journey into the mind of an 11-year old was named Best Animated Feature and Pete Docter was named Best Director. Inside Out also took trophies home for writing, storyboarding, editing, character design, character animation, music and production design. And finally, Phyllis Smith received a much-deserved Annie for providing the voice of Sadness. It was a busy night for Team Disney as their animated TV series Disney's Mickey Mouse received three Annies (storyboarding, editing and music). The Good Dinosaur, Wander Over Yonder, Gravity Falls and Avengers: Age of Ultron all received one Annie each. Tim and Anthony recap the Annies and keep things animated with these other entertaining items in this week's Inside The Mouse Castle: Happy Birthday, Disney California Adventure! Disneyland's sister park turned 15 years old on Monday. Fresh off his Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning visited Disneyland on Monday and--as tradition dictates--was honored with a victory parade down Main Street, U.S.A. On Super Bowl Sunday, Disney debuted new trailers for The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War. One we were pretty excited for. The other not so much. You'll never guess which is which. Or maybe you have already. The Mouse Castle sends our condolences to the family and friends of Daniel Gerson. The screenwriter passed away in Los Angeles Saturday at the age of 49. Gerson co-wrote the scripts for Monsters, Inc. and Big Hero 6, among others. Rest in peace. This has us majorly excited: "Weird Al" Yankovic will lend his voice and musical talents to a new animated series on Disney XD from the creators of Phineas and Ferb. Milo Murphy's Law will follow the adventures of Milo, the fictional great-great-great-great grandson of the Murphy's Law namesake. Yankovic will play Milo with a voice cast that includes Christian Slater, Vanessa Williams, Sarah Chalke, Jemaine Clement and Mackenzie Phillips. The show premieres this fall. Want your house to smell like Disneyland? Anthology Candles has created a line of scented candles that borrow from your favorite park aromas like Dole Whips, churros, the Main Street Bakery and even the Haunted Mansion. That's all well and good, but call us when you've perfected Pirates of the Caribbean Grotto. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://insidethemousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
My guest for this month is Maja Henderson, and she’s joined me to discuss the film she chose for me, the 2015 comedy-drama adventure Inside Out. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: Both Maja and I live in the city of San Francisco, it’s basically like this film Fun fact, I’m a fan of the sport of Hockey The co-directors of this wonderful film were Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen The film was made by renowned animation film studio Pixar Psychiatry and Psychology aren’t the same thing Mindy Kaling was absolutely perfect as Disgust No one could have been more suited for the role of Anger than Lewis Black Just as perfect though, are Amy Poehler as Joy and Phyllis Smith as Sadness Both Maja and I are from the city of Seattle, a place that can trigger varying emotions Dysthymia was a new term for me, as was DSM-IV Indeed, neither of us are from Minnesota I suffered some years from Seasonal affective disorder, which, believe it or not, is called SAD Big Hero 6 takes place in San Fransokyo The ridiculous pizza place is technically in Emeryville, not San Francisco But James Lick Middle School, where she goes to school, is in San Francisco Her house felt very much like North Beach or Chinatown, both in San Francisco John Lasseter runs Pixar, if he says do something they’ll find a way to do it I hadn’t heard of Ralph Eggleston before, but he’s a long-time Pixar employee Brave and The Incredibles are also wonderful films from Pixar that feature innovative hair animation I enjoy Cars and Cars 2, but I definitely connected with this film more Bill Hader did a really nice job as Fear My hometown of Mercer Island, WA really is probably the safest island in the world The Central District is nice now, but it was pretty sketchy when I was in school I do so love a good Alfred Hitchcock joke Chinatown is a good one too though, I’m happy with that Someday perhaps I’ll read Waiting for Godot I grew up on Asterix and Tintin, and I think they hold up for adults, I certainly caught a lot of jokes I didn’t as a child Rent or buy the film from iTunes Rent or buy the film from Amazon
