Actress and host of the podcast Squeezed, Yvette Nicole Brown, joins Sam and admits she’s better at making decisions for other people than for herself because she wants to be perfect even though she knows she never can be. Yvette shares a regret about not being able to attend her dream school Howard University and how she hopes they might give her an honorary degree someday. She also talks about taking "dumb risks" like moving to LA with only $500 to try to be a singer, and being a legal secretary in the entertainment industry just to be near it. They talk about why this country can’t find a good way to talk about death, and why they're both kind of morbid--and love it. Plus, they talk about why no one likes fellow Ohioan JD Vance, and finally get to the bottom of billionaires and the caretaking crisis. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Good Guys and Gals… Do we have a show for you! Today we're joined by none other than the incomparable Yvette Nicole Brown, AKA your favorite movie theater manager on Drake and Josh AND Miss Shirley on the hit comedy Community. Yvette shares what it was like on set working with a young Josh Peck, their relationship, her disappointment during Josh's years of using, and *just* how little she made working on the hit Nickelodeon show. Yvette lets us in on what she's doing instead of partying (Hint: It's Legos) and according to Ben, gives the BEST advice to our callers via Speakpipe. Remember folks - you've gotta kick sugar to keep the feet! We laugh, we cry, we do improv, and *perhaps* even reenact one of the most iconic scenes from the show. It was truly a gift to have Yvette on the show, and essentially, this timeline is the happy version of A Star is Born. Hope you enjoy, love ya morons! What are you nuts?! He is also single dad co-parenting 11-year-old triplets with his ex-husband in one of the most expensive cities in the world: New York. In this engaging conversation, actress, activist, and all-around beautiful human, Yvette Nicole Brown, gives us a lesson on the fundamental importance of joy, the blessings of caregiving, and the significance of community support. Through an exploration of Yvettes' career, first in the music business, and now in the entertainment industry, she and Jen and Amy discuss the many challenges that face black women today while also talking about one of black women's greatest superpowers – the sisterhood that exists among them. They lean into how white women can learn to harness that power in their relationships, too, and the things that can be done to support their sisters of color right now. Yvette also reflects on her personal life as a devoted caregiver, and dishes for a moment about the beauty of finding love in your late 50s. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I don't know as a kid that I ever thought that I would be a star. I always felt that I would be impactful in people's lives in some way because of the way that I love people.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “I am still pinching myself. I'm Forrest Gump in the flesh – in real life – because I just say yes to things that feel right and God just takes me to the next opportunity to do the same.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “That's why black women are always so close with each other because whenever you see a ‘sista', you know her story, without knowing her story. That's why we call each other ‘sista', because we know what she's been through. Same thing with black men. ‘Brotha'. ‘Sista'. We know what the other person has been through and we stand with each other and support each other. But here's the thing, we stand with and support everybody else too. And that's why we say ‘vote like black women, think like black women'. That's not hubris. That's not arrogance. That's heart. That's soul.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “When it comes to anything that comes up in the news, culture, current events, whatever's going on, if I feel even a modicum of uncertainty about how to feel about it, I just look to the black women. It's the correct reading of the room. The response is always for the greater good. It's what's good for culture, for people, our neighbors, progress, equality.” – Jen Hatmaker “Instead of me showing you my pain, I'm going to use my joy as my strength and I'm going to dance and laugh through this thing.” – Yvette Nicole Brown Resources Mentioned in This Episode: I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America by Tyler Merritt - https://amzn.to/3U6nMfN Yvette's acting and producing credits - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1304328/ Kamala Harris for President - https://kamalaharris.com/ How Black Women Organizers Broke Zoom to Raise $1.5 Million - Fortune.com K-Pops by Anderson .Paak at Toronto International Film Festival - https://tiff.net/events/k-pops Frasier - https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/frasier-2023/ Among Us - https://www.innersloth.com/voice-cast-for-the-among-us-animated-series-round-1/ Donors Choose - https://www.donorschoose.org/ The Creative Coalition Commission on Caregiving - https://thecreativecoalition.org/caregiving/ Emily's List Guest's Links: Yvette's website - http://www.actressyvettenicolebrown.com/ Yvette's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yvettenicolebrown Yvette's Twitter - https://x.com/ynb Yvette's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/YvetteNBrown/ Yvette's Squeezed Docupodcast - https://lemonadamedia.com/show/squeezed/ Connect with Jen! In this episode of the mibo show, Shanti Das speaks with actress, host and caretaker Yvette Nicole Brown about her journey as an Alzheimer's caretaker and advocate. Brown discusses her years of taking care of her father and the ups and downs that come with caring for a loved one. Shanti also opens up about her own personal experience as a caretaker. Both women offer honest insight and advice to people who are going through the same situation in their lives. 21.3% of Black people over 70 live with Alzheimer's. This is true. According to the Alzheimer's Association, 21.3% of Black Americans ages 70 and older are living with Alzheimer's. This statistic is also referenced by UC Davis Health. 1 in 5 people are doing some sort of role as a caregiver. This is true. According to AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving, more than 1 in 5 adults – roughly 53 million adult Americans – are unpaid family caregivers. A study by the Rosalynn Carter Center also shows as much as 22% of the U.S. workforce is composed of family caregivers. Those who are caregiving are more prone to mental stress than those who aren't. This is true. According to Mayo Clinic, caregivers report higher levels of stress than people who are not caregivers. Additionally, a study found in the National Library of Medicine reports caregiving has all the features of a chronic stress experience and can be used as a model for studying the health effects of chronic stress. It's hard, hard work – but also full of joy and connection. This episode focuses on Stephanie and her dad, who has Parkinson's disease. If you love Last Day, you're going to love Squeezed, which brings the same tenderness and compassion to storytelling. Squeezed is a Lemonada Media original. That experience is at the heart of her storytelling as host of the new podcast Squeezed, focused on the millions of Americans who find themselves balancing caregiving with careers. On today's episode of A Word, Yvette Nicole Brown speaks with Jason Johnson about the caregivers who shared their stories on Squeezed, and what the rest of the nation –from neighbors, to friends, to political leaders– can do to support caregiving. In this seven-part series, actress and caregiver Yvette Nicole Brown looks at caregiving over the course of a lifetime, exploring the lives of everyday people, spotlighting the daily dramas, hardships and joys of caregiving across America. So many of us are caught up in the challenges of providing care and love across generations, all while juggling the demands of work and family, navigating a system that wasn't designed with care and love in mind. You're about to hear a clip from the first episode, where Yvette Nicole Brown talks to Stephanie Wittels Wachs, co-founder of Lemonada Media, a mom of two, and a primary caregiver for her dad, who has Parkinson's. On the surface, Stephanie manages her kids' extracurriculars, visits to her dad's care facility, work meetings, hikes with her husband, and never ending grocery store trips. But on the inside, she's sinking into quicksand. To hear more of Squeezed with Yvette Nicole Brown, head to: https://lemonada.lnk.to/SqueezedfdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
