“People think sequels are easier, and I'm like, ‘No, no, it's much harder. It is much harder to write.' They have never written sequels, those people, because you need to do everything as well as the first and yet better, and go to new places, follow all the world rules, but create new ones. I mean, it's just so many balls in the air,” says Meg LeFauve, co-writer for Inside Out 2, along with Dave Holstein. In this special live episode from the Writers Guild Foundation Library, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein talk about tackling a whole new set of challenges as they wrote the sequel to the beloved movie Inside Out. They also discuss the 5-year Pixar development process that includes the concept of failing fast. “They really want you pushing to things that are new and innovative, so they expect you to fail. They actually want you to fail but they want you to do that quickly, right? Because we only have five years, so it's always like, hurry up, hurry up. You know, fail. Go again. Go again,” she says. Holstein shared some very personal advice for writing coming of age stories, like the Inside Out movies: get micro-focused. “Sometimes it's better to zoom in than to zoom out. For me, it helps to zoom in on a detail and let the detail be a microcosm for the rest of it. I know that when we were writing this film, I was thinking about my anxiety at that age and where that came from. I had a speech impediment, I had a stutter, so I hated Spanish class because I had to read out loud, and my stutter always came out in front of people, which made me very, very anxious. And I feel like, for Riley, there's a three-day hockey camp that could determine the rest of her life. That's where I sort of sunk into and if I was writing a different story about me, I would have gone into those details. But for me, it was about finding something very specific and very small,” says Holstein. To hear more about the writing process, listen to the podcast.

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing INSIDE OUT 2 (2024), directed by Kelsey Mann, from a script by Meg LeFauve, Dave Holstein and Kelsey Mann. Puberty is messy in this fantastic sequel to Pixar's original 2015 hit movie. Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now thirteen and just when Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and the rest of Riley's emotions (Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear and Liza Lapira as Disgust) think they have everything running smoothly, a new crew of emotions (Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui and Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment) arrive to make the trials and tribulations of being a teenager even more chaotic. The film clocks in at 1 h and 36 m, is rated PG and currently streaming on Disney+. Kim Masters and Matt Belloni banter about the summer box office, noting that it started with a whimper but is ending with a bang thanks to a sequel and two superheroes. Edgar Bronfman Jr. has withdrawn his bid for Paramount, and as the Venice Film Festival kicks off, Italy's increasingly right-wing government is courting Hollywood productions. Additionally, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein, the writers of the Pixar megahit Inside Out 2, join Kim Masters to discuss the importance of putting animated movies in theaters instead of only on streaming platforms — as former Disney CEO Bob Chapek did during his tenure. They also address whether the culture at Pixar has changed since John Lasseter’s 2018 departure amid misconduct allegations.

When asked about his first time working in feature animation, Meg's Inside Out 2 co-writer Dave Holstein described the process as: "writing inside a dishwasher while it's running." This is just one of many charming talking points in this lovely conversation between two brilliant minds: Dave, and our very own Meg LeFauve!
“Honestly, and I know it sounds sentimental, but when I became a writer, I held Pixar out as my beacon,” says Meg LeFauve. “At the time, I thought some of the best storytelling was coming out of Pixar and I had heard about the Brain Trust room. I thought the scariest, most thrilling thing I could do is be in that room as a writer with those Story Brains.” Everybody told Meg it was impossible and that “they don't even hire writers.” She adds, “But, you have to do what your gut tells you and you don't go in a straight line, but I eventually got to go in and meet on a project.” She didn't get hired on the first meeting but did land the job on Inside Out. Dave Holstein says, “In college, I remember watching the short film collections from Pixar and being endlessly moved by the work they were doing and that was one of my big career goals. 1. Run a TV show. 2. Write a Pixar movie. These things seemed too far away.” Holstein initially met on Toy Story 4, didn't get the first job, but was asked to meet on Onward and then, Inside Out 2. “It was a great combination of scheduling luck and having been on their list for a long time.” The screenwriter created the Jim Carrey series Kidding between Pixar meetings. As far as ongoing work with Pixar, the writers say you really need to be comfortable in a Writer's Room and you need to be able to think and pitch ideas on the spot. “It doesn't mean you have to come from television, but there's that element to it. You're with the Director and you come out of a screening and you have to pitch ideas how to fix it on your feet.” Many writers start as “weekly” pitchers. “They want to know if you fit into this flow. Can you pitch on your feet? A lot of writers listen and then pitch so there's no one way to do it, but that's an element of working there that isn't for all writers,” confirms LeFauve. “Like TV, the job is to serve a greater vision,” adds Holstein. Inside Out 2 is Here to Help: Navigating Your Teen's Emotions with Dr. Lisa Damour In this episode, you'll hear: Why parents of teenagers often feel isolated and what we can do about it Phrases and practice advice for having productive conversations with your teens The difference between healthy and unhealthy anxiety Dr. Lisa Damour is a clinical psychologist and author who has been specializing in the development of teenage girls and young women for over 30 years. About 10 years ago, she realized most of the information available on teen development was about things going wrong, but there was a lack of literature addressing the typical development of adolescent girls and the normal anxieties they face. This prompted her to write the New York Times bestsellers Untangled and Under Pressure. Eventually, she started writing for The New York Times and was assigned to cover Inside Out, which was a perfect fit as her daughter was 11 at the time, the same age as Riley, the main character of the movie. Unsurprisingly, her work caught the attention of Pixar as they began development on Inside Out 2. Fast forward to 2020, and Dr. Damor got a call from Pixar to meet with Kelsey Mann and Meg LeFauve, the Inside Out 2 director and writer, respectively, and began her involvement with the upcoming film. In this episode, Mathew and Dr. Damour discuss why parents of teenagers can often feel isolated and what makes Inside Out and Inside Out 2 such a great conversational jumping-off point. We know teens are designed for independence, so connecting with or advising them can more often than not lead to pushback and rebellion. Thankfully, Dr. Damor gives us some practice tips and phrases that can help make these conversations easier to navigate and normalize intense and negative emotions. With the rising fear of adolescent mental health crises and distress, she notes that it is important for us to remember that psychological distress and negative emotions teens experience are normal and are not the same as mental health concerns. She encourages parents to embrace the flow of emotions and help their teens explore the upsides and downsides of emotions we all feel, like joy, sadness, disgust, and anxiety. Kay Tuxford is at Austin! Rob is not! Is he jealous? Maybe -- but that's not going to get in the way of the two of them tackling one of the most important parts of the screenplay, THE MIDPOINT! This Week's Resource: We have two resources this week. The first is from a friend of the podcast, Paige Feldman, who is documenting her journey as she writes -- and prepares to direct -- her first feature film on her YouTube channel. But this week she put out a really great video on what she calls “Cringe Paralysis” and the name sort of speaks for itself. We're not gonna spoil the video for you, Paige kind of lays out her fears about her screenplay and we think it's something that you guys might find helpful because we all have had some form of cringe paralysis at one time or another. Our second resource, like what we did for acts two & three, is a playlist of videos designed to help you identify and craft your midpoint based on the information acquired. And we gotta say, the internet, specifically YouTube, does love its midpoint videos, as these videos are BANGERS. Chock-a-block full of easy-to-digest definitions and recognizable examples, especially the one from lessons from the screenplay on Collateral. It's legit amazing. In this episode of Katie's Crib, Katie talks to Meg LeFauve, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter for the Pixar film Inside Out. Meg explains the process that came along with writing the film, and what she hopes the movie (and its successor) would teach about expressing emotions. Meg digs into how she first got involved in the IO project, and how the character Sadness became the essential emotion of focus in the movie. The “The Screenwriting Life” podcast host also reflects on how she witnessed children and adult audience members react to the flick. Finally, Meg recalls how the movie influenced her own parenting styles. Also, how did Meg's own children respond to Inside Out, knowing that their mom wrote the movie? Push play for the answer! One of Netflix's most celebrated animated movies of the year comes from our very own Meg LeFauve, whose beautiful script for "My Father's Dragon" was brought to life by Nora Twomey, one of our industry's most celebrated animated directors. Nora and Meg discuss how the movie came to fruition, what the development process looked like, and why precision and attention to detail in our storytelling is the key to finding success in our work. The writer of the Oscar winning film Inside Out talks about her new movie My Father's Dragon and how she builds story from theme and emotion.
Crying helps me slow down and obsess over the weight of life's problems. And boy does this movie make me cry! I was watching this on my phone in the doctor's waiting room and I was biting my tongue go hard trying not to spill tears. When this movie came out in 2015, my daughter was about 18 months old, too I've resonated with this movie from the beginning. I was also a big fan of Pixar Animation Studios back then, as they were still consistently churning out solid emotional hits as good as Toy Story and Ratatouille. Re-watching this movie now, seven years later, it was probably even harder to watch as my kids have collected their own core memories and developed their own behaviors and personalities. I can tell you which emotion rules their inner headquarters - just as I can tell you which one rules mine and my wife's. Some movies are timeless, some are flawless, but this one is the only one I can think of that I consider to be pure ingenious. Not only is it one of the most emotional movies I've seen, but it's the smartest. Physchologists love this movie, as it puts words and images to something so hard to explain to anyone young or old - our emotions. If you haven't seen this movie, go fix that this vey minute. Prepare yourself for one of the most unique film experiences of your life. And make sure you're alone, unless you don't mind crying in public. Inside Out stars the voice talents of Amy Pohler, Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and Lewis Black. It was written by Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen, and Meg LeFauve. It was directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronnie Del Carmen. On Rotten Tomatoes, Inside Out has an impressive critics' score of 89% and an audience score of 89%, which I consider to be strangely low. With me today, I have with me Doctor Michele Wright, who was the USA Today Woman of the Year for Arkansas, winner of the Global Leadership Award for Nations of Women Change Makers in 2021, amongst many other accolades and accomplishments. If I were to list them all, we'd be here all day, so Michele, please introduce yourself to our listeners by telling everyone a little about yourself, what you do for work, and for fun. Questions About the Movie: Tell me a little bit about the process of getting the Water Tales made, and how it had to do with the movie Inside Out. What about Inside Out speaks to you the most? Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness tend to all be negative emotions. Isn't it interesting that the one positive emotion we have is Joy? Yet, that's the one we're all chasing after. Can you explain how we can find positivity in all the other emotions? This movie is filled with lasts. Riley's last goofy moment with her parents, her last hockey game in Michigan, her last time playing with her friend... we often miss those last moments in our own lives. Is there any way we can clock those for posterity? The scene with the mom and dad's differing emotions and thoughts is pretty hilarious and accurate to my life. In what ways do you and Terry have different trains of thought where you're not communicating properly? How do you go about correcting this? Without any pun intended, this is a highly emotional movie. What part, if any, moves you the most? Questions for Application Did you go through any life-changing seasons like Riley did in the movie? How did you respond to the changes? There are no antagonists in the movie, but at one point Mom says, "If you could keep smiling it would be a big help." How can sentences like this be damaging to children? Did you have an imaginary friend like Bing Bong? If so, do you think imaginary friends are beneficial to children? This movie is about rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep, which is a Bible verse taken straight out of Romans. How do you see this pertaining to real life? I finish up this episode by asking Michele 5 questions about the movie. You can check out Michele's Water Tales podcast here. In this episode of Critical Reads, me and my special guest, Dianne, will be discussing the Animated Comedy Film, Inside Out, written by Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, and Josh Cooley. Here's a brief summary of the movie courtesy of Pixar: "Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school." This week's "Musings of Tired Black Social Worker" segment topic is What Actors Would You Cast as the Little Emotions Inside of Your Head? Followed by Name Your Islands of Personality. To watch Inside Out, login to Disney Plus or you can rent it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and other streaming platforms. Movie extras can be found here. Pixar movies are always emotional journeys – quite literally in the case of Inside Out. Having sent audiences into the cosmos with Wall-E and into the clouds with Up, the revered animation studio went for a more introspective approach in 2015 with this heartwarming story set entirely in the mind of an adolescent girl. Riley is eleven when her family relocates to San Francisco, forcing her to leave behind her friends and classmates in the Midwest. Inside her head, as she attempts to navigate her daunting new life, are five emotions controlling her actions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger. When catastrophe strikes, Joy – voiced by Amy Poehler – is sent on a mission across Riley’s mind with Sadness. Along the way, Joy learns that sorrow isn’t something to be stamped out or fixed – it’s an emotion to be embraced. Our guest this week, Meg LeFauve, co-wrote the film with Josh Cooley and director Pete Docter, who came up with the idea for Inside Out after observing his own daughter’s changing emotions as she dealt with adolescence around 2009. It was a hard story to crack, as you’ll hear in this episode. Meg came onboard with Inside Out at an impasse: Pete, co-director Ronnie del Carmen and their collaborators had the concept of these emotions as characters, battling it out within Riley’s head, but had yet to figure out a way of translating that idea into a transformative feature film adventure. We caught up with Meg – who you might also know for work on Captain Marvel and The Good Dinosaur – to hear how she, Pete and Josh overcame this hurdle to craft one of the best-loved and most unique Pixar movies yet. We get into how the tragic loss of a colleague at Pixar helped inform the film, the importance of accepting sadness and what the chances are of a sequel ever seeing the light of day. Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. Each episode, the screenwriter behind a beloved film shares with us their initial screenplay for that movie. By 12:02 a.m. ET on the morning of Wednesday, March 20, the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox will be complete, putting the cap on the long-gestating negotiation that will see the merging of these two Hollywood houses. The deal, first announced in December 2017 with a multi-billion-dollar price tag, will see Disney absorb the 21st Century Fox movie and TV divisions. That includes film rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four, as well as the Avatar franchise from James Cameron While the two companies worked out the kinks of this merger, thereby inflating the initial $52.4 billion to $71.3 billion after a rival bid from Comcast, some projects seemed to be in limbo, like The New Mutants and the future of the Deadpool films. In this session from the Leaders Sport Performance Summit in LA earlier in 2016, Meg LeFauve, co-writer of Pixar's acclaimed Inside Out movie, talks to Washington University's Dehra Harris about what makes a compelling story, what a hero needs to overcome their obstacles, and how we translate this into the stories of grit to help our athletes.
