When you've been busy creating, writing and starring in TV shows and films for a couple of decades, who has time for a hobby? That's been the case for Mark McKinney. This son of a diplomat moved around a lot as a lad and says comedy has always been his hobby. Together with Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCullough and Scott Thompson, he's been performing on stage, film and television as one of the Kids in the Hall since the late 1980s. McKinney also spent a couple of seasons as a writer-performer on Saturday Night Live, helped create, write and act in Slings & Arrows, and appeared in shows such as Man Seeking Woman and Son of a Critch. He also was the showrunner on Less Than Kind and for six seasons co-starred as manager Glen Sturgis on the NBC sitcom Superstore. That didn't leave much room for stamp collecting or skeet shooting. On Mark McKinney Needs a Hobby (Wednesdays on CTV and streaming on Crave), McKinney tries birding, fly fishing, puppetry and even tackled hockey playing robots. He's joined by guests such as comedians Margaret Cho and Deb DiGiovanni, singer Billy Newton-Davis, Superstore co-star Ben Feldman, food critic James Chatto and Muppet puppeteer Trish Leeper. As you'll see in episode one, however, he drew the line when it came to tattooing. My dear friend, Leslie Meisel, joins me this week in the diner.  She is an actor who has appeared on Broad City, RISE, Difficult People, and a director.  Recently she has also become a practicing reiki master! We talked about whether you should order steak at a diner and a fun quirk about her related to Grease 2. I loved hearing about how Leslie's acting dreams started and the mental ups and downs of trying to pursue it.  We then reminisced about one of the most random jobs either of us has ever had when we worked for The Ride in Times Square. We then shifted to a powerful talk about Leslie's transition from doing more acting/directing work to doing more spiritual and healing work.  Leslie now does Reiki and I had no idea what that is so I got an education!  What a beautiful, funny, and sincere episode; please enjoy it with a side of fries! About the Guest:  Leslie Meisel is a Certified Reiki Practitioner (attuned by Joan Volpe PH.D, Reiki Master, Shaman). She is also an actor, writer, director, teacher and in college worked at a bowling alley thinking it would be exactly like Grease 2*..........................it wasn't. Leslie came to discover Reiki through her own healing journey about 10 years ago when working with Joan. Once she saw the benefits of this method in her own life, learning the art became a wonderful passion and mission to assist others in achieving healing in their own lives. As far as the acting/directing/writing part of Leslie's life, she was previously co-host of the monthly show COUPLES SKATE at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre NY, a cast member on the UCB house team CHARACTERS WELCOME (Season 1 & 2). On screen, Leslie has worked with Ed Burns, Michael Imperioli, Dane DeHaan, and appeared on the NBC show RISE, Difficult People, Broad City, Netflix's The Characters, and the feature film Bachelorette (w/Rebel Wilson & Kirsten Dunst).  As a director, she has worked on many shows at the UCB Theatre, including AzN Pop!: Live in Concert!, All In Favor, United Federation of Teachers with Natasha Vaynblatt (IFC, Funny or Die, McSeeney's), co-directed Stone Cold Fox: Sexy Idiots with Aaron Burdette, (Man Seeking Woman, The Onion), several Maude sketch teams, co-director/writer of He Said She Said with Kate Riley-Zelensky (MTV, Two Guys Named Josh) and worked with Bridge & Tunnel‘s staged show for Montreal's Just For Laughs Festival (Kristen Bartlett; Full Frontal with Samantha Bee).   *Leslie is one of many "Martys" who always wanted to be a "Rizzo"... which is why she may think that Grease 2 is MUCH better than Grease.   Connect with Leslie and learn more: http://www.lesliemeisel.com/ (http://www.lesliemeisel.com)(website) https://www.instagram.com/meiselleslie/ (@meiselellis) (Instagram) https://www.northportwellnesscenter.com/practitioner/leslie-ellis-reiki (https://www.northportwellnesscenter.com/practitioner/leslie-ellis-reiki) (reiki) About the Host:  Friends! Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I first met Jay Baruchel 20 years ago in Los Angeles on a Television Critics Association  Fox network reception in downtown Los Angeles, At 18, he was starring in Judd Apatow's college comedy Undeclared alongside another young Canadian, Seth Rogen. The two were pretty excited to have landed on a promising show; what they  could not have known at the time was that they'd each won the comedy career lottery.Baruchel was born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal. He grew up soaking up every bit of movie intel from the likes of Leonard Maltin and Siskel & Ebert; within a few years he would be reviewed by all three. He talks about his steps along the way -- his early Canadian work on Popular Mechanics for Kids (PMK) and Are You Afraid of the Dark; being directed by Cameron Crowe in "Almost Famous" and Clint Eastwood in "Million Dollar Baby"; being reunited with Rogen on "Knocked Up" and "This is The End."Also touched on is his his work on the FX series Man Seeking Woman, a shot-in-Toronto wonder, and his determination to act in, direct, write and produce projects in his home and native land. One current effort is The Moodys, which premieres Thursday, April 1 on Fox. The Montreal-based production stars Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and Francois Arnaud, with Gerry Dee recurring. Because Leary is in it, the series has several scenes shot in a hockey rink. Baruchel, a lifelong fan of les Canadiens, says even he is less of an NHL nerd than Leary. You'll hear more on other Baruchel touchstones, such as his own hockey movies Goons 1 & 2, where  he also contributed as a writer and a director. I even try to pry a story out of him about his "How to Train Your Dragon" voice-mate Craig Ferguson. That's Jay Baruchel, who'se gone from Almost Famous to a clutch player in TV and film.

His latest work can be seen in An American Pickle from HBO Max. The movie is based on a short story Simon wrote in 2013. A while back, Simon was able to swing by and read a few selections from his most recent short story collection, Hits and Misses. They say history is written by the victors. Celebrating the exploits of so-called great men. The Washingtons. The Lincolns. The Paul Reveres. And history is never, ever, written by the horses these great men rode. Until now.

I was the chap holding a sample of his urine in a vial. As my name was called over the automated system, your infant repeated it in an infantile (as would follow) mimic. You gasped in amazement, turned and informed me that "Jeremy" and "Kettle" were the fifth and sixth words, respectively, that your child had articulated, albeit sloppily. I was in a rush but am I clinically bananas to think there was a connection there? I'd like to capitalise on this momentum we've generated and make hay while the Sun shines - forgive the mixed metaphors. I'm not getting younger nor is your menopause a million miles away. I must stress, your child honours me with its serenade, but I am not its father and my wallet will reflect that. But yes, this insipid podcast. One hopes you harbour a fragment of interest in Sonic the Hedgehog (he of the eponymous franchise) or otherwise enjoy artistic snobbery and resentment of success posing as concern for the state of cinema. I'm not saying he should be judged solely on that basis. It's just a happy accident that his ugliness of character is expressed aesthetically. Either way, I'm not gay. Don H writes in “Did you now VUDU has been doing this for quite some time now?  I'm not sure how long, but I found old marketing e-mails from them going back to March 2017 offering free TV shows with ads. They have over a 1000 movies and TV shows to choose from and they change up the selection monthly.”   Peter asked for TV show recommendations, here are some of the responses: Banshee is my first suggestion. I would argue it's the greatest action television show ever made. The fight scenes throughout this show get progressively more insane and unbelievable in all the best ways. The only thing I'll say is you just need to get over the initial premise, and if you can do that you will have so much fun with this show, and the final season (not only was chosen to end by the creator instead of being cancelled) brings everything home in truly the best way it all can.   Rectify is another option if you're open to a bit of a slow burn that will literally make you cry every episode, and not for the reasons that Parenthood or This is Us do. The dialogue and the uniqueness of the main character makes this show very much worth the time to invest.   Man Seeking Woman. Hilarious and unique sketch type show that also is able to tied together a coherent story from season to season and again I feel the way they choose to end the show is just perfect   Those are my top 3, at least of current shows. Hope you check em out and can't wait to hear you talk about how awesome Lucas Hood and Kai Proctor are!” Jacob Chandler Mississippi: “Hey Peter, I heard you were looking for a new show to watch and you have a list of criteria for what kind of show you want it to be. I'm not sure if this show meets all the criteria but it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. I would highly recommend looking at Amazon Prime's Patriot. It's a dark comedy about a U.S. spy coming to Luxembourg to interfere with the Iranian election. And as generic and uninteresting as that sounds, it is actually one of the better shows in the “sad hitman” genre. It's really quirky with a very complex plot and a whole lot of ridiculousness somehow wrapped up in a decent emotional struggle. Check out at least the first three episodes and if you don't like it by then you probably won't be able to get into it. But I highly recommend it.  Love the show” Matt Y: “Long time listener, first time writer as they say. Love the show! Last week you guys discussed super hero one-offs and a couple of other examples of one of style shows like Black Mirror. I wanted to recommend that you check out an episode or two of Room 104 on HBO. The first season from the Duplas brothers was zainey and unexpected.  Each half hour episode takes place in the same nondescript motel room. The era, visitors, and metaphysical rules are always different. The first season episodes split pretty evenly into a third of the episodes as junk, another third as a “good sit”, and a third of truly inspired story telling. I'd recommend you check out episodes 2 (Pizza Boy), 5 (The Internet), and 7 (The Missionaries). Season two is three episodes in and they have all been great! Last night Michael Shannon played a Russian diplomat who sets up a date with a woman he met on the Internet, played by Judy Greer. You don't get these strange stories anywhere else! Anyways, have a great weekend.” Fred from Chattanooga,TN says “Of course you may have seen all of these but I thought I'd throw a few out there that I really like and these could keep you busy for a little while  Six Feet Under The Shield The Knick - the show was directed by Stephen Soderbergh and is fantastic. So underrated Banshee - another fantastic show that not a lot of people talk about  Mad Men, The Leftovers, Deadwood.” Roger writes in: “you might want to check out one of the greatest sci fi shows of all time!!! babylon 5!!! it's free on amazon prime.  the first season is a tad a slow build, but it's just incredible. You might also want to check out misfits , it's on hulu right now” Sean from Missouri writes in “Hey Peter, I thought I might suggest the X-Files or Gilmore Girls for shows with a decent amount of seasons that you could watch if you haven't seen those yet. I guess there's also the various Star Trek series which have a lot of seasons if you put them all together. Hope that helps!” Errol L writes in “Hey Peter! Errol from LA. Looking for some binge worthy completed shows? Well strap in!   Peter Freeman from Gainesville, VA writes in “You mentioned you were looking for a suggestion for a serialized TV show. Have you tried Person of Interest. This show ran 5 seasons and stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan was the show runner   The first season initially was procedural with an over arching storyline but by season two it became a full blown serialized show. I believe it's available on Netflix.“ Amber-T writes in “In terms of shows with lots of seasons that are available and fun to watch... (and you're right, I don't know what you've seen)  The Good Wife, The West Wing, Doctor Who, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, Mad Men, Supernatural, Friday Night Lights.  I also recently watched an indie horror film called Sick For Toys that's super dark and weird, about a brother who kidnaps a guy for his sister for her present every Christmas. Deals with a lot of #metoo stuff without being too on the nose. Flew really under the radar, but worth checking out.”   Key Chung writes in: “just heard the latest /film daily pod. You should mos def check out The Expanse! It starts off very good and gets better as it goes along. Last season was best season of sci-fi currently on TV imho.” Mike T writes in “Hey—if you're looking for a show to binge, I would suggest Peep Show.  It's a British comedy, 9 seasons (each better than the last), and it's serialized.  Very dark, and one of the few comedies that warrants repeat viewings. It's on Hulu and Amazon Prime.” MovieGeekBlog tweeted “Peter, if you are looking for serialised stories #theAmericans or #TheGoodWife are some of the best. Also, have you seen #MurderOne?” David Chen tweeted: “just heard the most recent Slash Daily. If you have Hulu, I think you should check these out. It truly was groundbreaking and probably still holds up.” Classic ER Episodes Michael O. from Nashville TN writes in to ask: “This is more a question about physical media and less about film. But how many more years do you give to retail stores like GameStop? When will that suffer the same fate as Blockbuster?” Hashim (pronounced like wash-em) writes in “Hello gang,  Enjoying your podcast which I recently discovered. You asked for film related questions on a recent podcast.  I'm wondering what the best movie going experiences you can recommend when it comes to visually enjoying a film.   Super large screens really don't matter much to me, I feel like I can always sit closer if I want everything projected large. It's mainly about contrast, color, clarity and deep blacks and overall brightness.  Are the premium offerings from standard digital projection really worth it when it comes to the visuals? If so, which theater chains stand out?  We currently do not have a true Imax screen in the entire state of Michigan. It's all about MJR, Cinemark and AMC in the Detroit area.  Essentially, can you rank based on visuals and not necessarily on sound, food, seats, etc?”   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview LORRAINE TOUSSAINT (Donna Rosewood on ROSEWOOD). She will discuss the season Premere of Rosewood. For her role as the viciously seductive inmate “Vee” on the second season of “Orange Is The New Black,” Lorraine Toussaint won the SAG Award and Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Toussaint also received praise both for her performance in the Academy Award-nominated feature film “Selma,” and her starring role on the fantasy-drama series “Forever.” Joining Rosewood in his practice are his sister and “toxicology queen,” PIPPY (Gabrielle Dennis, “The Game”); and DNA specialist TARA MILLY IZIKOFF aka TMI (Anna Konkle, “Man Seeking Woman,” “Betas”), who is Pippy's fiancée. Rosewood's mom, DONNA (Lorraine Toussaint, “Orange is the New Black”), is on the cusp of some major life changes that will affect her children profoundly. A matriarch with a lot of strong opinions, Shirley holds family gatherings sacred and makes Rosewood's love life a regular topic of conversation. Rounding out the cast is Miami PD's CAPTAIN IRA HORNSTOCK (Domenick Lombardozzi, “The Wire”) who is a great team leader but is terrible at managing his own life. Hornstock and Rosewood have a complicated relationship: while he can't stand Rosewood's big personality and sunny disposition, he acknowledges Rosewood's stellar contributions to the department.

James has a man crush and he admits it on today's podcast. Simon Rich again joins James today for a very special episode. Simon's new TV show, Man Seeking Woman, debuted last night on FXX. Man Seeking Woman follows Josh Greenberg (a stand-in of sorts for Rich himself, played by the excellent Jay Baruchel) as he navigates a fantastical nightmare world of millennial dating. When Simon was last on James show, (episode 52) they talked about an inside look at his writing technique and routines... his very own daily practice. There is an art to Simon's writing and you can feel his passion while listening to him talk about his work. On today's show they dive deep into his new TV sitcom, what a day is like creating a TV show, his biggest fears, and how he finds his inspiration. James asks Simon how you can get found. Simon says, just make something great. Don't try to write it to get a TV job, just make it great. Whether it's a 10-minute standup comedy routine or a short play you perform with your friends. Whatever it is, get it up on YouTube... No matter what happens, whether the show is picked up for another season or not, and of course Simon says he hopes it is. "It's been the best year of my life." He has a huge list of other projects he is currently working on.   Listen in today. You'll be glad you did. ------------What do YOU think of the show?
