Today, you get to enjoy the fifth show programmed by one of our patrons from the CONDUCTOR TIER over at our Patreon page. In this tier, which is $10 USD ($14.50 CAN), donors get all of the benefits of lower tiers PLUS they earn the opportunity to program their very own personal one-hour(ish) show once a year. Today, you can listen to Eldaly Morningstar's long-awaited Patreon playlist. The entire delay is my fault. I've had this script in my hands for a while now, and I've been nothing but lazy and forgetful about finishing this episode,e along with everyone else's Patreon Playlist shows that I still have to deliver. In any case, the show is finally done, and now you get to hear it. As you will witness, Eldaly is a HUGE video game music enthusiast, and you will hear a LOT of AWESOME video game music on the episode, many of which I was unfamiliar with. You'll hear works by Yasunori Mitsuda, Yuki Kajiura, Testukazu Nakanishi, Yoko Shimomura, Colin O'Malley, Peter McConnell, Daniel Teper, Olivier Deriviere, Nima Fakhrara, David Housden, Alistair Kerley, and Jessica Curry. It's been far too long since we had composer David Housden on the show. Last time, we talked about Thomas Was Alone and Volume. David's music for Disney Illusion Island is quite different from those scores, as you'd expect. Complete with cartoon humor and sweeping melodies, it fits perfectly. The game is a multiplayer platformer/Metroidvania and it is SO. FUN!! I highly recommend it, as much as I recommend the fantastic music. You can support Level with Emily on Patreon. Show Notes: http://videogamegrooves.com/2022/01/31/episode-91-final-fantasy-viii-battletoads-smash-hits/ We're back for 2022, perhaps a little bit sleepy, but hibernation can do that to you. Jeremy, Anthony, and Caleb are kicking off the new year with a giant spiked boot and a cool Squall Leonhart necklace. (Yeah, we know.) We are ready to return to the days of slow MIDI beats to study to with Final Fantasy VIII from Square Enix, extracting a few thematic elements from the generally well-liked Uematsu score, and putting them on the turntable for all to see. Redbook audio? Who needs it?? And who in the Final Fantasy universe is the Vin Diesel analog from The Fast and the Furious? We move it along to a much earlier (and also much later) era with Battletoads: Smash Hits from iam8bit. We discuss a bit of the origins of the franchise with David Wise's not-actually-heavy-metal leanings in the 80s, and run through the weird and warty history up to Battletoads (2020). David Housden expertly weaves many metal threads together into a simultaneously self-aware but genuinely great metal album... along with some calliope music. We look at the new releases that have come out or been announced in January, and the list is not too bad and generally pretty encouraging! We also put down some predictions for 2022, including production and industry matters, the kinds of releases we expect to see, and we toss a few out-loud wishes into the podcasting ether to see what comes back to us. Outro: "Balamb Garden" - Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VIII Twitter – @vg_grooves, @jeremy_lamont, @ch3records Caleb's other prediction is that game music vinyl labels will be releasing a lot of other kinds of "merch" this year. Many of life's events that you go through are unexpected. Whether you plan months in advance, or they just happen on the fly, in the end, there's no telling how a certain experience could go. We can't truly predict what next week or even tomorrow will bring for us as we've seen this year. All there is to do is step in and see it all for yourself, and I had the joy of experiencing this feeling last January when I flew to San Antonio to meet people I've never met before in a city I've never been to. My brain has no idea how to plan for the weekend I'm about to undergo, but in the end, that's the best way to prepare. Just, not knowing. Some of the best things you experience are the ones that you don't expect to know what's going to happen. So let's see what became of this event where I simply knew nothing but came out learning something. And thank you for being here for Clean's Chats. In Lost Words: Beyond the Page, Izzy deals with her grandmother's illness by writing her thoughts in her journal. As the game progresses and it's clear that her gran's illness is quite serious, Izzy's journal becomes an escape as she creates the fantasy world of Estoria. David Housden created a soundtrack that partners perfectly with this emotional story. David says he looked to films by Pixar, Dream Works and Studio Ghibli for inspiration for the emotionally difficult experience young Izzy is going through. To help with the process of writing music for orchestra, piano and voice, David tapped his good friend and fellow composer Gareth Coker and his team for orchestration. At Gareth's suggestion, David approached the developers with the possiblity of the outstanding Nashville Scoring Orchestra recording the soundtrack at Ocean Way Studios, something that really makes the music come alive. David also worked with wind virtuoso Kristin Naigus and classically trained singer Elizabeth
Show host and producer, Chris O'Regan talks to Juha Kangas of Logic Ember about their puzzle platform game, Backworlds It's difficult enough making a single level in a puzzle platform game, let along two that overlay one another. But that is exactly what Logic Ember have done when creating the mind-twisting puzzle platform game, Backworlds. In Backworlds, players can paint across the screen to reveal another world that mirrors the one in which they find themselves. These worlds can interact with each other to the point where seemingly impassable obstacles become little more than a minor inconvenience. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode266.mp3 Music featured by David Housden and Paul Housden, OST can be bought from Bandcamp here: https://backworlds.bandcamp.com/releases Tracks: 1. Naturally, this influence can also be heard in many games, in obvious and more subtle ways. Our new mixtape is an attempt to put together fifteen of these tracks, including the music from fairly lynchian games such as Deadly Premonition, Kentucky Route Zero, Mizzurna Falls, Thimbleweed Park and Virginia, ANAMANAGUCHI's glorious cover of the Twin Peaks Theme, and Angelo Badalamenti's own contribution to video game music back in 2005. Last month Sam Hughes caught up with David Housden, after his recent work on The Lost Words, QUBE2 and more! David came to be one of the most promising young talents, after his work on the soundtrack for Thomas Was Alone. The game received a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Music and is highly regarded as an indie hit. He then rejoined Mike Bithell for his next game Volume, a respin of the classic Robin Hood stories. His music changed direction with more of an orchestral, rock score and worked alongside Riva Taylor on the vocals for the game. “Drawing upon his garage rock band days, Housden creates melodic, original music scores which illuminate imaginary worlds with real emotion and immersion.” They discuss advice for composers, current state of the industry and beyond!

The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors. At night, take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge through a set of unique locations for items that will help you stay alive. Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them for longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival.
