This week we finally get the game we've been talking about doing for months, Thimbleweed Park. It's a throwback to 80's and 90's point and click adventure games. It a ton of fun, gets very meta, has a load of nostalgic references and very retro pixel art.

The UK is enjoying its annual two weeks of good weather and so the Indieventure crew have decided to get together and plan an indie game (well, indie-led) summer holiday! That's right, it's another list episode, featuring a whistlestop tour of some of the greatest vacation destinations in video games according to, as it turns out, three potentially nightmarish travel companions. Our dream trip turns out to include stops in: Abzu, Anemoiapolis, Animal Crossing: Wild World, BioShock, Book of Travels, Botany Manor, The Coin Game, Danganronpa 2, Dishonored 2, Doomsday Paradise, Dorfromantik, En Garde!, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Final Fantasy VII, Firewatch, Five Nights at Freddy's, The Good Life, Half-Life, A Highland Song, Hooked On You, Huniepop 2, The Last of Us, The Legend of Zelda, Let's Build A Zoo, Overboard, Paradise Killer, Parkasaurus, Placid Plastic Duck Simulator, Pokémon Crystal, The Quarry, Resident Evil, Roman Sands RE:Build, A Short Hike, Star Birds, Stardew Valley, Strange Horticulture, Thank Goodness You're Here, Thimbleweed Park, Until Dawn, and The Witness. In hyperfixations, Rachel has again turned her attention to tabletop gaming and has been greatly enjoying Spots, a card game where you roll dice and apply their dots to a variety of cute dalmatians. Liam has been playing Destiny 2: The Final Shape, reminding him once again that he actually really likes Destiny 2 sorry-not-sorry. Rebecca has been very busy but nevertheless the announcement of Life is Strange: Double Exposure is giving her life. (Note: We had to record this episode further in advance than usual, which is why you won't hear anyone getting excited about the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection — don't be alarmed, normal service will undoubtedly resume in the next episode.) Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic.
The Boys have a meandering chat about Assassin's Creed Shadows, IGN Entertainment acquires multiple news outlets, former XCOM director Jake Solomon making a next-gen “life-sim,” Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert making new game that is a cross of Diablo, Zelda, and Thimbleweed Park, China's laws regarding youths and screen time bear fruit, V Rising release date announced, Redfall gets a final update, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder delayed but not for long, Crow Country released, and more!
This week Anna & Paul are joined by Ryan Slattery of Slatt Studio to discuss the pros and cons of text parser and the pros and cons of point and click, but like, comparatively. I guess it's parser vs point and click but idk, the "vs" gives it like a grudge match kinda vibe and we didn't really frame it like one of them has to win and the other lose. Here, let's start over with an overtly intellectual vibe: This week your hosts are joined by one R. J. Slattery to discuss - Exegesis on Interactive Paradigms: The Dialectical Tension Between Point-and-Click Interfaces and Text-Parser Mechanisms in Digital Ludology. Ah very good. That was most better.

Jk_eye, Travol y RodoR
New episodes broadcast live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sotdcast On this week's episode the gang begin by saluting the WWE's Undertaker after the horror that was Matt's staying up for Wrestlemania until 5am. We also touch on the rights and wrongs of The Walking Dead's Season 7 finale, new films Life and Ghost In The Shell – a rather serviceable adaptation in itself but perhaps too similar to the original? Meanwhile Tom has become hooked after his first dabble with the modern day phenomena of Escape Rooms – although it may have potentially brought RE7 one step closer to being horrifyingly real. Remember kids, don't eat bugs or have a womb made of bugs – it just ain't gonna end well. We're here though to uncover the truth as we investigate the zombie outbreak that is Dead Rising Watchtower. Although we differ in opinion on how good a movie it is, there is some talk on what makes a great adaptation and whether films like Watchtower succeed with a 'filling-in' approach, helping to bridge gaps between games. Afterwards we set sail for the off-topic archipelago, covering everything from Nu-Metal and dogs covered in pasta sauce, to new games Thimbleweed Park and Blackwood Crossing, as we get the show format back-to-front – whoops.

LucasArts Employee #3 himself, David Fox joins to talk about his fantastic career contributing to some of the most iconic graphic adventure games of our time, chasing the technology to create location-based interactive experiences, and his philosophy on positive change through design. Topics include VR, interpersonal issues in the modern game industry, politics, electric cars, and more. David was so kind to agree to this show, we were both fighting illness at the time of recording (I had to really work hard on my end of the discussion in post to make it listenable, apologies for any unusual tone quality) but I could not have been more pleased with the discussion itself. David has contributed to so many games we all know and love, Zak McKracken, Maniac Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Thimbleweed Park, and more. It was such a pleasure to spend some time learning about the rest of his awesome work and capture more details about the things he's done. Please keep an open mind; David's time at LucasArts has been discussed in super deep detail in a variety of interviews and I'd encourage you to check them out. I wanted to do more for this show to really get a sense of David's contributions to technology and interactive experiences on a broader scale. Nonetheless there's plenty of great material here to dig into about design, VR, and the game development community. Check it out and reach out to David on Twitter! In this week's episode we visit some indie titles both new and old. Light Fall released by Bishop Games a few weeks ago and we played through the first few hours of these unique side scrolling platformer. In this you play a boy in a world full of darkness, creating platforms to advance further in the game. We also go back to 2017 to jump into an old-school adventure game called Thimbleweed Park. This is from the creators of Monkey Island and you find yourself solving a murder in a weird town. In the news, we talk about the new details from the Nintendo Switch online service, the real life politician running for Eve Online's in-game council and a hidden puzzle in Destiny 2 that led to treasure. This week's discussion is based on the news article that Shadow of the Tomb Raider cost around 75-100 million to make. With the cost of making games skyrocketing, how developers find ways to continue to make profit? We discuss the pros and cons of free to play and other options available to developers that could advance the industry forward and make both publishers and consumers happy. The story of a cancelled X-Men TV controller game, as told by former LucasArts illustrator Mark Ferrari, who is a world-renowned and innovative pixel artist responsible for popularising multiple graphical techniques — including dithering, colour cycling, and palette shifting. And an inside look at the downside of having marketing-focused gatekeepers in charge of what products hit store shelves. Music by http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Kai_Engel/ (Kai Engel), http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Lee_Rosevere/Music_for_Podcasts_4/ (Lee Rosevere), and http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Evan_Schaeffer/Glow_1216 (Evan Schaeffer). You can listen to the episode I made on Mark's graphical innovations, which doesn't include this story, at http://lifeandtimes.games (lifeandtimes.games). And you can see a few screenshots of the cancelled X-Men game at his website, http://markferrari.com (markferrari.com). It's under 8-bit Game Art Volume 2. Mark worked recently on a spiritual successor to Maniac Mansion called Thimbleweed Park, along with other LucasArts alums Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, and David Fox. Illustrator Mark Ferrari's artwork was so good it forced Lucasfilm Games to develop new graphics programming techniques so they could fit it on a floppy disk, and force the rest of the industry to come along with them. This is the story of Mark and his pioneering, world-renowned colour cycling and palette shifting techniques, which could be used to make a single computer illustration appear alive. You can see a collection of Mark's artwork — including his coloured pencil illustrations as well as his computer graphics — at his website http://markferrari.com (markferrari.com).
