Dustforce is a game we always knew we'd talk about. Its OST is one of the most pure and interesting video game soundtracks of all time by our estimation. But as it turns out, the things that inspired it and the feelings it stirs within us are maybe even stronger.
It's been a little while, but technical issues be darned to heck! We are back! And we're back in style. Video Game Grooves returns for a probably-classic episode as Paul and Jeremy combine forces with our good friend Tom from Laced Records! This week we explore some classic indie "chip-style" music with a throw back to 2011's precision-platformer Dustforce, with Fastfall: Dustforce by Lifeformed. We discuss some of the influences that the album had on indie music for the next several years, and where the Hitbox Team game fits into the pantheon of punishment that the genre represents today. We then continue with every year's game-of-the-year The Last of Us, from Mondo Records. We ruminate on the virtuosic style of Gustavo "Gus" Santaolalla, and how his personal compositions might have been translated into the audio design of the game itself. We then proceed to the news and new releases (which are now slightly-aged releases) and point you in the direction of the next opportunity to drain your wallet, and the latest happenings in the world of video game music on vinyl records. Finally, inspired by Dustforce, we enter into a discussion of the identity of "post-chip" music, and whether its day has come and gone, where it is now, and some of the essential picks in the genre that have been released on vinyl. Join Brian and Kevin as they mop up the flaming pile of dog shit, or the golden nectar of the gods, that is Dustforce; a stylized indie platformer about super-powered, ninja janitors.
This week Kaz is coming off of a losing streak in heroes, and a similar streak in Dark Souls 3. William is back from the dead with a shiny 'Double S' achievement from Dustforce and having played a little of Octopath Traveler. Kyle returns with a report on the Hololens, Beat Saber, Megaman X, and Enter the Gungeon. In our quick news, we mention Evo, Spider-Man, Valve, off disc Spyro 2-3, and the Megaman and Castlevania animated shows. For discussion, we take a look at some of Sylvanas' actions as warchief in the upcoming WoW expansion, and a bit of the player reaction. Then, to finish up, we discuss examining games based on player experience as opposed to actual content, and subjectivity (or objectivity, if you prefer). Come pause with us!

Welcome back from a short break! William has come back from a short vacation, but doesn't have much to show for it other than incremental progress in Dustforce. Kaz has begun an epic journey in both Dark Souls and Tooth and Tail, and Kyle has beaten Steamworld Dig 2, only to fall to piracy in order to play some rare games on his NES Classic. In news, we talk about Octopath Traveler, Bomb Chicken, the new Pokemon trailer, Warframe, Spyro, and Sonic Mania, followed up with some Smash amiibo and music. For our discussion, we look at ESPN and Overwatch, the banning of lootboxes in some countries, and Nintendo's new anti-pirate hardware. To finish up, we discuss collecting games, their value, and preservation as we move into the future. Come pause with us!

We're back after two weeks! During the break, we were able to get together and play some party games, including Lethal League, Windjammers, and Crawl. William is still working on SS in Dustforce, and has also started playing Fire Emblem: Conquest and picked up his old save file in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. Kaz has reached previously unexplored plotpoints in Skyrim, and abandoned them to become evil, she's also gotten back into Dark Souls 3, but this time, she knows what she's doing. Kyle is enjoying his time in Darkest Dungeon, and is extremely conflicted about the new God of War. For news, we mention the announcement for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and cover some points from Nintendo's financial report: Kimishima is retiring as President, and sales are up. We also talk about Battlerite's new battle royale mode, Nintendo continuing to support the 3ds, and a liitle bit about a dead game from Eidos Montreal, which leads us into a discussion about games that were unexpected in style, success, or concept to finish up. Come pause with us!

This week, Kaz is inspired by cosplay, Kyle is charmed by Tearaway: Unfolded, and William continues on his Xenoblade and Dustforce crusades. Also this week, the Switch happened (again)—we have details on price, release date, hardware specs, and more. As far as games go, Arms is a thing, and the new Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 are both looking almost as excellent as Zelda. New console launches don't happen every day, so come pause with us as we get hype for the Switch!

Platformers stress me out. My reflexes aren’t great, and the genre famously punishes players like me who can’t execute fast movements. But Dustforce is different. Its calming music, smooth gameplay, and gentle themes and art are relaxing. You’re always moving forward, even when facing obstacles or at a slow pace. It’s a clever game that […]
