Hello everyone! Our Q&A is finally here! A big warm thank you to all who submitted questions. It really does mean the world to us.    For the very astute among us, you may notice a couple things right away: 1) This is a Part 1. We have been known to take our time with our responses to things. And that is on display here. 2) We did not get to every question. Contrary to Zoe's declaration. Even on the upcoming Part 2. So be on the lookout for a follow up, to the follow up. When will this be? That sounds like a scheduling nightmare I wouldn't count on that being right away.   Episode 1 From Scott via email: (Based on Still Wakes the Deep episode) If you were able to give your ideal game pitch, what would the game be and to who would you make the pitch, seeing that they would be the best to carry out your idea (e.g. Naughty Dog, The Chinese Room, Giant Sparrow, or maybe try to get a one on one with Lucas Pope?)? (Based on Neva): Stars in the night sky sometimes seem to get brighter, sometimes dimmer, or sometimes fade out entirely: here in 2024, is there a game that stands out that you think you would either raise or lower its ranking from when you reviewed it? Is there a game that you think would be worth a second shot, either one that fizzled out (Starfield) or one that you rated low that might be worth another look, like seeing if you actually hated a book from school for the book or because high school said you had to read it? Is there anything on the horizon that has your interest gaming-wise, either one that would end up on the podcast or one that you'd play for yourself? (Full disclosure: asking this as I am still watching the trailer for Dispatch which hits a ton of buttons for me)   From Ben via email: As the darlings of indie darlings what do you think AI is going to do to the current AAA/indie funding models/ the industry in general? How do you think the balance between creation and curation is going to be affected? What music do you play to when you aren't listening to in-game music (if such a thing happens)? I mean obviously one would never be so disrespectful to Darren Korb but you know, other games maybe What do you think of Bungie's possible demise (again)?

Every Supergiant Games release is an event. But it's not just from the gamers and critics who adore the video games' rich stories, immaculate art style or addictive game play. It's the music nerds that also wait with bated breath on Darren Korb's newest score.  As Supergiant's in-house composer and audio head, Korb has become a fixture unto himself with his compositions, from the Lead Belly meets Massive Attack thunk of Bastion to the Imogen Heap inspired Transistor soundtrack. But for Korb, and Supergiant as a whole, Hades might be the zenith. The game has received lavish praise, and so has Korb's work, which has found him expanding into new sounds. Hades' eccentric score is a mixture of Mediterranean folk, progressive-metal and lush chamber pieces. Alongside collaborators Ashley Barrett and Austin Wintory (composer of Journey), Korb has reached the apex of composition: an album that can stand on its own sweeping merits while providing the perfect audio companion to the gameplay. We talked to Korb about his research for the score, his work voicing the main character, Zagreus, and recording in Abbey Road. These two interviews are from before Hades' release, looking at the history of Korb's work with Supergiant. The second is after Hades' release.

Composer Darren Korb's music for Hades properly beloved. It's a great blend of metal with acoustic Mediterranean instruments to take you through the deep story of the game. Darren adds his voice acting talents to the game as well, voicing the main character, Zagreus, and the training dummy, Skelly. Hades is one of my favorite rogue-lite dungeon crawlers, and the music is the best.  Darren and I had this conversation about his music and acting in November 2021. For a handful of reasons, none of which have anything to do with Darren, we are sharing it now, with sincere apologies for a nearly two-year delay! On this episode we chat with lead singer and songwriter A.L.X. from the NYC-based rock band, Love Crushed Velvet. LVC's music, like New York City, is diverse, edgy and enticing. Carefully crafted songs combine elements of alternative, glam, post punk, new wave, modern & classic rock, and the roster of producers and musicians A.L.X. has worked with is impressive to say the least. After collaborating with drummer Thommy Price (Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Blue Öyster Cult) and acquiring lead guitarist Jimi Bones (Joan Jett, Blondie) and bassist Enzo Penizzotto (Joan Jett), Love Crushed Velvet recorded their debut album at Shabby Road Studios, Kingsland Recording in Brooklyn, NY, and at Brian McGee's NY studio. Mixed by veteran producer and engineer Dave Bascombe, the album was released in 2011. In 2015 the band released both the EP 'Delusions' and the album 'Firefly'. The next few years saw the singles "Other Places", a re-release of "Rise Up" and "It's a Holiday, Come Over" a Christmas song accompanied by a fun animated video. Now, after teasing with singles and cutting-edge videos for the past few years, Love Crushed Velvet has released their latest full-length album, Souls and the Barren Heart. We chat about A.L.X.'s background growing up around NYC, his songwriting process, Nashville, collaborations, the new music and the impressive Virtual Reality videos such as The Light Inside and The Future that have accompanied recent singles. The latest, Saddened Eyes, was just released to coincide with the new album. The band's lineup has varied for live performances but some veteran players include keyboardist Linda Leseman, bassists Drew Mortali & Darren Korb, drummers Aaron A. Brooks & Massimo "Max" Majorana and guitarist and long-time songwriting partner, Jay Stone. A.L.X. has been performing shows in Italy and has toured around Europe as well as the U.S. The band even did a sponsored tour of Australia. The gods of guesting have been kind to us once again, and Darren Korb, audio director for Supergiant Games (Hades, Bastion, Transistor, Pyre) and voice of Zagreus in Hades, has landed in our lap to talk of Beatles and Queens! Darren loves how weird, inventive, and well-produced The Beatles' penultimate album “Abbey Road” is, and in this episode, he talks about how that blend makes him think about his own music in different ways. Queens of the Stone Age's “Songs for the Deaf” isn't actually that, but it is full of mean riffs and precise Dave Grohl drumming, and that adds up to what Darren calls “heavy stoner rock.” Our community portion is chock-full of fun questions from our Patreon patrons about favorite guitar tunings, our first-ever “favorite” songs, who has the best “best-of” album, and much more! Louise Blain reflects on this week's 2021 Bafta Gaming Awards, talking with the nominees and featuring the music - considering them as a possible litmus test on the shape of gaming in the 2020s. Music featured in the programme is taken from the nominees for the Best Gaming Music category, which are: GHOST OF TSUSHIMA by Ilan Eshkeri, Shigeru Umebayashi, Peter Scaturro; HADES by Darren Korb; THE LAST OF US PART II by Gustavo Santaolalla, Mac Quayle, Scott Hanau; MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES by John Paesano, Scott Hanau, Alex Hackford; ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS by Gareth Coker; and SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE by Jay Waters, Joe Thwaites, Joanna Skorupa. Nominees for the Game of the Year include ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS which has proved such a hit during a year of lockdown. Louise looks at these, and more, listing the winners. In Louise's words: "Gaming was such a lifeline for so many people over 2020 and the 2021 British Academy Games Awards nominations reflect that. I don't think many of us would feel quite as connected to friends if we hadn't spent months fishing together in Animal Crossing: New Horizons or sharing the emotional web of The Last of Us Part 2. Vitally, 2020's games are a clear indicator of the diversity possible in this industry. I can't wait to explore the incredible scores nominated in the Best Gaming Music category. From the heroic joy of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the indie sword-spinning action of Hades, these are soundtracks to define a year like no other."

The art design from Jen Zee, the musical work from Darren Korb, and a groundbreaking narration preformance from Logan Cunningham arguably reframed indie games in the public consciousness.  Outro music: Bastion 'A 'Kid-pella' by Andrew McLaren, David Lane, Dorothy Hayden, Ryan Billington, and Square Law (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02673) You can follow the show on Twitter: @BestGamesPeriod Or download the podcast from Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/thebestgamesperiod

This week, we're coming up roses as we review Supergiant's 2011 double-A (?) indie darling, Bastion. This game has been around forever, and it has made its way onto so many platforms, it's almost difficult to keep track - but it began life as a 360 indie game by a group of seven devs mostly of ex-Westwood/EA LA fame. Needless to say, there isn't much resemblance to the days of Kane & Co., but what remains is a shining gem of gorgeous graphics and a fun brawler, though we wish it was a bit less obscure and a bit more RPG-ey (some of us, anyway). The key thing this podcast might help you with, oh previous player of Bastion, is a far more comprehensive understanding of the story, which our friend Matt knows a suspicious amount about. Listen up!Also featured are extensive recommendations, some of them strange, based on what we feel are similar or precursory games to Supergiant's first. And somehow, zero spoilers for Transistor!Relevant links!Bastion Original Soundtrack via Darren Korb on BandcampAutomodellista: racing made artsy (and mildly age-resistant) [Editor's note: vexels and oldschool DangeRuss on dA are probably inspired by this, wish I had known more about it]Wiki: Zia is an 'unseen character'Neal Stephenson's Seveneves is a book y'all should read. Because it rocks.BT's "Road Trip" (or, ingame Tiger Woods 2006, "Convergence") sounds awful familiar...
