The dragons are once again delighted to welcome Hamish Steele, author of popular comics/ graphic novels Deadendia and Pantheon, and creator of hit Netflix series Deadend: Paranormal Park, to the show. (And with some exciting news too!) This week Jules and Madeleine take a look at that peculiar but appealing phenomenon in long running TV shows - the musical episode. As a long time lover of musicals and a creator of just such a musical episode, Hamish is ideally situated to wade in on the discussion. Tracing the 'lineage' of the trend from cult classics like 'Fame' (1980) through a few very dicey attempts in the 80s and early 90s, before the sub-genre was cemented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this dissection looks at why a musical episode might be appealing, why it can make or break a show with your audience, and why sometimes it doesn't work. Under the microscope this week: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Deadend: Paranormal Park, Ally McBeal, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic.

Maybe you've seen the new animated series on Netflix entitled Dead End: Paranormal Park, featuring a cast of queer characters working at an amusement park that might be a portal to hell. I spoke to the show's creator, Hamish Steele, several years ago when his comic book Deadendia was in the early stages of being adapted into a show, and now that Dead End has been completed and released, we're revisiting that conversation this week to hear about the real-life friends who inspired the story… and also Hamish's controversial opinions about the difference between films that merely have queer people in them versus films that queer people actually like. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a weekly newsletter where I write stories about queer pop culture and also link to cute animal videos — subscribe to that at mattbaume.com. Also take a look at my YouTube channel for videos about film and TV history — I've got one coming up about Seinfeld's “not that there's anything wrong with that” episode. Also, big thanks to everyone who supports The Sewers of Paris on Patreon! Patrons get hours of exclusive videos about super queer pop culture history, stickers and stuff in the mail, and shoutouts in the credits of YouTube videos.
This week the dragons are delighted to welcome back special guest Hamish Steele to talk about his forthcoming Netflix series Dead End: Paranormal Park. Based on the DeadEndia graphic novels, the setting of the series makes Hamish the perfect person to join this week's discussion. Carnivals, circuses and fair grounds are niche but popular settings for speculative fiction. As liminal spaces where the usual rules are suspended, they are ideal places to look at the world in a different way or challenge mundane boundaries. Their inherent whimsy, surreality and eeriness allow them to fit into multiple different genres - mystery, fantasy, horror, even science fiction. But where does this setting and the sense of suspension of rules originate? And what exactly is out fascination with them born of? Find out in this week's episode. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
Paul W. S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich return with another take on a Capcom franchise. This time, Harry and Rory are joined by creator of DeadEndia (and their brother) Hamish Steele on their quest to take down the Monster Hunter movie, as a squad of soliders are transported to another world. Along the way they encounter fire-breathing beasts, giant enemy crab-spiders, a feline chef, and whatever Ron Perlman's wig is supposed to be. They also talk about their playtime with various iterations of the game series, as well as a brief look at animated adventure Legends of the Guild. But how does Anderson's adaptation rank against his past video game movies? This podcast contains SPOILERS for Monster Hunter (2020), from 48:20. Welcome back to Part 02 of our conversation with DeadEndia creator and showrunner - and pitch extraordinaire - Hamish Steele! Last episode we talked about how the original DeadEndia story drew from some of the real life experiences Hamish and his friends had, and how our own real life experiences are, and can be, reflected in the shows that we watch and create. Now in Part 02, we're picking up again as Hamish considers what's most important about DeadEndia that he really wanted to protect as it became an animated show, as well as: - Plenty of pitching advice gleaned from Hamish's years of experience (including a link on diyanimation.show to his pitching webinar, 'How to Pitch Perfectly'!) - How collaboration can bolster representation and amplify others' voices - Hamish's wonderfully straight-forward answer to ‘guilty' pleasures - And his dearest wish for DeadEndia, and how you can help make it happen! This episode is an indie production from your hosts, Jessica Doll & Lauren Morse. Our theme music is provided by Azureflux.
Hey you! Welcome back to The DIY Animation Show! We're kicking off Season 5 with DeadEndia creator and showrunner, Hamish Steele! Possibly best currently known for his graphic novel, DeadEndia*, Hamish also has wide experience of developing and pitching animated shows, directing and writing with Blink Industries, has won an Eisner award, AND is a self-confessed zine enthusiast (if you ever get your eyes on his Paul Rudd zine, you won't regret it!). His work is silly and fun, and infused with warmth and a real heart for human experience. We were super excited to speak with him all about DeadEndia - to discover how his webcomic became an animated series, and what that process was like - and enjoyed an incredibly uplifting and astute conversation, ranging from his broad work experience to his and his friends' own personal experience of life. Today in Part 01 Hamish shares with us... - All about Deadendia - its roots, its heart, and its 10-year journey from short, to webcomic, to published book, to animated series - His experiences of show development and writing - What it's like showrunning during the UK's covid-19 lockdown, and finding ways to keep the team's spirits buoyed up - And the importance of being part of the conversation about LGBT representation This episode is an indie production from your hosts, Jessica Doll & Lauren Morse. Our theme music is provided by Azureflux.

My guest this week is Hamish Steele, whose graphic novel Deadendia is being adapted into an animated series at Netflix. The show will feature a gay trans man as the lead character, and it's inspired both by Hamish's friends and his love of shows like Dr Who and movies like The Addams Family Values, which feature queer-ish if not explicitly queer ensembles. Hamish is also running a Kickstarter right now for a comic book called Croc and Roll, that promises to be TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA meets JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS meets SCOTT PILGRIM meets... big gay alligator tears. I am super excited to chat with him about his inspirations and his controversial opinions about the difference between films with queer people in them versus films that queer people actually like. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that The Sewers of Paris is on Twitter and Facebook, where I post clips of the stuff that we talk about on each episode. My guest this week is illustrator and film obsessive Dashiell Silva, who you might know from his excellent Oscar guides and also as an artist on the just announced Netflix series Deadendia, which looks, by the way, amazing. Dashiell grew up in the West of Ireland where nobody understood his taste in film that was, in hindsight, extremely queer. His devotion to Sunset Blvd and Mommie Dearest made him feel like some kind of weird anomaly in his little town, until he started creating art and discovering what his talents were capable of.We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that The Sewers of Paris is on Twitter and Facebook — I post clips of the stuff that we talk about on each episode. And I hope you'll join me for our next fun friendly livestream on July 4th at 11am Pacific.
