Margaret Talbot, writing in The New Yorker in 2005, recounted that when animators at Pixar got stuck on a project they'd file into a screening room to watch a film by Hayao Miyazaki. Best known for works like “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “Spirited Away,” which received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, in 2002, he is considered by some to be the first true auteur of children's entertainment. On this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss the themes that have emerged across Miyazaki's œuvre, from bittersweet depictions of late childhood to meditations on the attractions and dangers of technology. Miyazaki's latest, “The Boy and the Heron,” is a semi-autobiographical story in which a young boy grieving his mother embarks on a quest through a magical realm as the Second World War rages in reality. The Japanese title, “How Do You Live?,” reveals the philosophical underpinnings of what may well be the filmmaker's final work. “Wherever you are—whether it seems to be peaceful, whether things are scary—there's something happening somewhere,” Cunningham says. “And you have to learn this as a child. There's pain somewhere. And you have to learn how to live your life along multiple tracks.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989)“My Neighbor Totoro” (1988)“Old Enough!” (1991-present)“Princess Mononoke” (1997)“Spirited Away” (2001)“The Boy and the Heron” (2023)“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C. Die Veröffentlichung eines neuen Hayao-Miyazaki-Films ist etwas ganz Besonderes.

Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who has previously announced his retirement three times, tells us all that The Boy and the Heron (as it's titled in most of the world; How Do You Live? in Japan) is really, honestly, for real this time, I'm super serious, his last film. His longtime producer, Toshio Suzuki, has already cast doubt on this new claim, but for now, here we have Miyazaki's final film, which tells the story of Mahito, a young boy in wartime Japan, who loses his mother in a fire and is evacuated to his aunt's countryside estate, whereupon he meets a talking grey heron that promises that his mother is alive. José sees The Boy and the Heron as a masterpiece of cinema, a film that does things that other films have forgotten to do, a doorway to thinking about life, loss, and worlds within worlds. Mike... didn't really get on with it, but he puts it down to taste and maybe mood - any objection he has can be equally levelled at things he loves. We easily agree that Miyazaki's and Ghibli's reputation for visual design and craft holds, with image upon image here that dazzles. As for what it all adds up to? Take José's side. It's better to like things than be bored by them. Recorded on 30th December 2023.

It was released in English a little over a year ago, but we've finally gotten around to reading Shuna's Journey by Hayao Miyazaki, a gem that was originally published in 1983. It's not a long read, but it's absolutely gripping and worth your time and contemplation. If you're a fan of Miyazaki's films, then Shuna's Journey will certainly be of major interest. It's kinda decent timing, by our standards, to talk about Shuna's Journey because Miyazaki's been back in the public discourse. As you probably know, his latest film, The Boy and the Heron, was recently released in U.S. theaters, and may still be playing at the time this episode drops (check your local listings). (They should have kept the original title of How Do You Live?, though.) If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Feel free to hit us up on our socials, or email us! Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ is No. 1 at the box office, a first for the Japanese anime master

For the first time in Hayao Miyazaki's decades-spanning career, the 82-year-old Japanese anime master is No. 1 at the North American box office. Miyazaki's latest enchantment, “The Boy and the Heron,” debuted with $12.8 million, according to studio estimates. “The Boy and the Heron,” the long-awaited animated fantasy from the director of “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and other cherished anime classics, is only the third anime to ever top the box office in U.S. and Canadian theaters, and the first original anime to do so. The film, which is playing in both subtitled and dubbed versions, is also the first fully foreign production to land atop the domestic box office last year. Though Miyazaki's movies have often been enormous hits in Japan and Asia, they've traditionally made less of a mark in North American cinemas. The director's previous best performer was his last movie, 2013's “The Wind Rises,” which grossed $5.2 million in its entire domestic run. “It's really a resounding statement for what animation can be,” said Eric Beckman, founder and chief executive of GKIDS, the North American distributor for Studio Ghibli films. “American audiences have been ready for a lot more than what they've been getting, and I think this really points to that direction.” “The Boy and the Heron” for years was expected to be Miyazaki's swan song. But just as it was making its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Junichi Nishioka, Studio Ghibli vice president, said the previously retired Miyazaki has begun working toward another film. “The Boy and the Heron,” has been hailed as one of the best films of 2023. The film, featuring an English dub voice cast including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, and Mark Hamill, follows a boy who, after his mother perishes in World War II bombing, is led by a mysterious heron to a portal that takes him to a fantastical realm. In Japan, its title translates to “How Do You Live?” “The Boy and the Heron” earlier collected $56 million in Japan despite zero promotion. Studio Ghibli opted to release the film without production stills, trailers, ads, or billboards. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Unfortunately it was re-titled by GKids to "The Boy and the Heron," which the three of us agree was a dumb move by the distributor. We meditate over why Miyazaki chose this as his potential last film, and why it was something that pulled him from retirement. Historical trends, modern Japanese culture, personal reflection, the gorgeous animation, and the comparison to other animated works are thoughtfully discussed. Were we over-hyped? Or is this the best Studio Ghibli film of all time? Listen and find out. Submit your mailbags to us at thesearcherspodcast@gmail.com. Thank you. (VERY MILD SPOILERS) Some good stuff to see at the movie theater this Holiday season and it's unfortunate that we can't get to them all. We had to go watch what many are advertising, perhaps falsely, as Hayao Miyazaki's last movie. He's retired at least once already but much like that veteran pro wrestler who just can't let it go, Miyazaki perhaps doesn't know what else to do with his time. As of this writing he has not officially retired but he is 83 and smokes so it's hard to say for sure. A firebombed Japan is the setting for the latest Miyazaki film “The Boy and the Heron” or 君たちはどう生きるか (How Do You Live?). Mahito lost his mother. The United States (we) firebombed the hospital where she worked and now Dad has met another lady and she seems nice and has seven lady dwarf assistants but Mahito struggles to face the new mother in his life. Also there's a Heron hanging around and starts to talk and that's all you really need to take it from here. It's a beautiful film absolutely without a doubt and highly recommended for the theater experience. A must for anyone who appreciates animation. It's nice to see true beauty in this world. Hey, imagine sticking one of those Warawara things up your ass. Is there anything in the world more full of hope and wonder than a Studio Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki? Perhaps that's why fans were so sad when Hayao Miyazaki announced his (most recent) retirement back in 2013, and even more overjoyed when he reversed his decision (yet again) three years later and began working on The Boy and the Heron (Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka/How Do You Live for those who prefer the Japanese title). Supposedly Miyazaki's swan song - a fitting term, seeing as how birds are so central to the story - the film tries to recapture the magic Studio Ghibli - and the great director himself - is known for.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki Writers: Hayao Miyazaki Starring:  Runtime:  2 Hour 4 Minutes Synopsis:  Already acclaimed as a masterpiece in Japan, Hayao Miyazaki's new film begins as a simple story of loss and love, and rises to become a staggering work of imagination. Already acclaimed as a masterpiece in Japan, Hayao Miyazaki's new film begins as a simple story of loss and love, and rises to a staggering work of imagination. Coming after the maker of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke announced his retirement, The Boy and the Heron is an especially precious gift, and possibly the final film we will see from one of cinema's greatest artists. As a boy, Miyazaki read Genzaburo Yoshino's novel How Do You Live? and embraced it as his favourite. This film was initially announced as an adaptation of that book, but Miyazaki uses it instead as one of many layers in a dazzling tapestry that draws even more upon his own youth. During the Second World War, young Mahito Maki (Soma Santoki) suffers a heartbreaking family tragedy and must move immediately to the countryside, where his father (Takuya Kimura) works for a family making planes for Japan's military, as Miyazaki's own father did. Isolated, Mahito begins exploring the mysterious landscapes and encounters a grey heron, persistent in its presence. The boy also happens upon an abandoned tower. Curious, he enters. From there, The Boy and the Heron expands into a wondrous, often-startling phantasmagoria. Visually, the film shows Miyazaki at the height of his powers, filling the frame with gorgeous compositions, vibrant colour, and arresting movement. As it draws you deeper into its mysteries, The Boy and the Heron becomes richer, stranger, and more profoundly beautiful. This is a singular, transformative experience in film, and not to be missed.   Everyone knows that Kriss doesn't watch anime but thanks to the Toronto Film Festival and the pre-festival buzz that Hayao Miyazaki's latest Studio Ghibili film was receiving, Kriss added The Boy and the Heron to his TIFF coverage list. And the film did not disappoint. Even for those that do not typically gravitate to anime or Studio Ghibili films, this film will definitely be relatable in its themes around grief, finding oneself and what it means to be a "good person". Another thing that works very well for this film is the time period around when this film takes place. Set during the Pacific War during World War 2, there are a lot of subtle (or not so subtle depending on one's understanding of history) that set a much darker and grim tone for this film. That understanding of some of the background action and characters only serves to make The Boy and the Heron even more of an intriguing and engaging films. Image credit: Courtesy of TIFF There have been a lot of great animated films this year but The Boy and the Heron might be one of the best looking films of the year. Audiences should definitely seek out IMAX showings of this film where possible. Even without IMAX, the film is absolutely stunning and pushes the bar higher for what audiences should demand from animated film visuals. The Boy and the Heron has received a lot of pre-festival buzz and it's all well worth it. Listen as Kriss, Ro and Brandon discuss The Boy and the Heron and dive deeper into the film and what makes it so good. The Boy and the Heron is now playing in US theaters. And you have to learn how to live your life along multiple tracks.” Read, watch, and listen with the critics: “Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989) “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988) “Old Enough!” (1991-present) “Princess Mononoke” (1997) “Spirited Away” (2001) “The Boy and the Heron” (2023) “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C. S. Lewis (1950) “The Moomins series” by Tove Jansson (1945-70) “The Wind Rises” (2013) New episodes drop every Thursday. Follow Critics at Large wherever you get your podcasts. Initially conceived as a short film exclusively for in-flight guests of Japan Airlines, the film eventually grew in ambition and scope and now stands as one of Miyazaki's most underrated, visually transcendent masterpieces. We discuss the film's many classic Hollywood touchpoints, including the films of Howard Hawks, Victor Fleming, and John Ford and how these influences create a sense of fantasy more grounded that other Miyazaki works. Then, we discuss the film's setting amidst the rising tide of fascism in the Adriatic and its connection to the moving character portrait at its core. Finally, we discuss how 'Porco Rosso' (perhaps more than any other film) suggests some of the director's late period affinities in works like 'The Wind Rises'.Plus: We talk Miyazaki's latest work 'The Boy & The Heron', which we have all had the chance to see ahead of its wide release in the US Friday, 12/8/23. Follow Adam Sullivan on Twitter.Read and subscribe to Adam's newsletter "eventually, forever".....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Studio Ghibli surprised fans by sharing the first images from Hayao Miyazaki's final film, “The Boy and the Heron” (also known as “How Do You Live?”), ahead of its North American release. These detailed, lush, and vibrant images depict a grand and mystical world, reminiscent of Miyazaki's previous works like “Castle in the Sky” and “Spirited Away.” The film, based on a 1937 novel, marks Miyazaki's return from retirement, as he felt compelled to create one more feature-length film. While a North American release date has yet to be announced, the movie is expected to hit theaters in the region by the end of the year. Johnny Hardwick, the voice actor of Dale Gribble on King of the Hill, died on August 8 at his home in Austin, Texas. He was 64. Hardwick had been with the show since its debut in 1997 and had also worked as a producer and writer on the show. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the show in 1999.

Perjantaina 14.7.2023 maailman kuuluisin anime-ohjaaja, Oscar-palkittu Hayao Miyazaki julkaisee viimeiseksi elokuvaksi julistetun How Do You Live?:n Japanissa. Hamish shares his love for the two main game titles, and we pick out our won Ghibli favourites, before we journey to the parallel world of the (non-Ghibli) movie, as teen besties Yu and Haru face a difficult choice that may seal the fate of a fantasy kingdom, the girl they both love, and their friendship. Then, with Fast X out to middling results, franchise captain Vin Diesel has high-revving rumored beef behind the scenes with co-star Jason Momoa. Has Vin jumped the shark/tank/stealth drone in real life? Speaking of the Fast series, longtime Fast-member Michelle Rodriguez recently kicked a hornets nest when she made comments supporting the totally real and not fake theory that POC are taking all of the white superhero roles nowadays. We break down this paper tiger and talk why diversity is helping the genre share something new for everyone. Finally, god of animation Hayao Miyazaki is saying goodbye with one last film, "How Do You Live?" The head of Studio Ghibli is going about it in an incredibly unique way, though -- there will be no previews, posters, or additional advertising to help sell the film. Welcome to Neo-Reality Collective | Pop-Culture News and Reviews Talk, Hosted by Eric Brown! In the Sixty-Seventh Episode, Tom Holland, after a grueling filming and producing period of a new Apple TV+ series, has announced he'll be taking a year-long break from acting to rest and recharge himself for his subsequent planned roles, such as Spider-Man 4. At the same time, Hollywood/Star Wars/Joker Icon Mark Hamill reveals he's ready to stop playing Luke Skywalker as the Star Wars Universe gets ready for The Ahsoka series in August featuring returning Star Wars Rebels characters and unresolved storylines in the build-to Dave Filoni's Heir To The Empire Star Wars Film. We learn more details regarding Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and a scrapped live-action sequence that was scrapped as Captain America: New World Order transitions to Captain America: Brave New World! The FTC charges Microsoft 20 Million Dollars following the revelation of Microsoft's Account data involving children. Meanwhile, Apple hosted its WWDC '23 keynote presentation with new updates/upgrades to The MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac, and iOS software, along with the unveiling of The Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality/virtual reality headset gear, priced at 3,500 Dollars so naturally it will sell if the Apple Cloth could be sold at $20 and be priced gouged by Scalpers…god help us all. Diablo 4's Hardcore mode before the launch of the game is already getting maxed out 100-level players with a method that is being deemed questionable by the community while revealing roadmaps and two expansion packs for the game in the coming years, but be warned, this IS Activision-Blizzard so don't be surprised if they don't keep to their promises. The Japanese Legend of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, is coming out of retirement for one last film, titled ‘How Do You Live?', set for July and using a bold marketing strategy where they do…absolutely nothing but a poster to build for the hype…Bold Strategy Cotten. The widely hyped film is now in the lead for the biggest box office opening this summer. To add to the excitement, Sony producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad teased several other Spidey-related projects, including a live action Miles Morales film as well as a Spider-Woman spinoff that is being fast tracked. The family feud has been cast aside, as Dwayne Johnson announces his return to the Fast and the Furious franchise. Johnson will reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in an upcoming spin-off that reportedly features Jason Momoa's Dante and will act as connective tissue to the Fast finale. This news breaks after highly publicized clashes between Johnson and Vin Diesel on previous productions with Johnson repeatedly stating he was “done” with the franchise. Following the success of Hocus Pocus 2, which was released last year, Disney has announced that Hocus Pocus 3 is already in the works with star Bette Midler having already said she'd love to continue working on the movies. Hocus Pocus 2 clocked in at the number five streaming movie for 2022. Can we say Cowabunga? A new trailer released for Seth Rogen's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem which is set to come out on August 2, 2023. The pizza-loving heroes-in-a-half-shell are taking on SuperFly while battling their own teenage issues as well. The film's animation style is taken from that of the Spider-Verse movies and looks to revitalize the beloved franchise. Marvel Studio's fourth Captain America film, previously dubbed New World Order, has changed its title to Brave New World. Mason Thames and Nico Parker have signed on to star as How to Train Your Dragon main characters Hiccup and Astrid respectful for the live action adaptation. Thomas Kail, the Tony award winning director of Broadway's Hamilton, has been tapped to direct Disney's live action remake of Moana. Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are set to star in Thread: An Insidious Tale, a new film set to be written and directed by Moon Knight showrunner Jeremy Slater. Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel heroine Ming-Na Wen received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Studio Ghibli announced it will not release a trailer or any promotional marketing for Miyazaki's final film, ‘How Do You Live?' MCU Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has gone on record admitting that Thor:Love & Thunder was “too silly.” Zack Snyder's upcoming space epic for Netflix, Rebel Moon, is being split into 2 parts, with each getting two separate cuts; one for everyone and another more explicit and strictly for adults. Mark Hamill credits the controversy surrounding Michael Keaton's casting as Batman for helping him relax during his Joker audition because he assumed the studio would never cast Luke Skywalker in fear of the fan backlash.

Hoe goed is Zack Snyder’s DCEU? Wouter is namelijk helemaal into anime.

Let's be real, the top tier animation studios consist of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios & Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has been able to consistently put out great content, with no lack in creativity or imagination. Studio Ghibli produces animated films made for both children and adults, and explores stories and themes not found in other movies. Their films usually tend to have environmental, anti-war themes, and often feature strong female characters.
