The 1980s was not only a time of genre excellence, but also one of romantic comedies about surly tone-deaf white men and their indefatigable struggle to remain that way. To this semi golden age of toxic masculinity, we consign “Paul Mazursky's Tempest,” in which an otherwise sensitive and big-hearted filmmaker somehow marshals the talents of John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Susan Sarandon, Raul Julia, and (in her big screen debut) Molly Ringwald, to deliver some of the least likable characters in screen history. And it's (vaguely) based on Shakespeare's “The Tempest”, which only leaves Paul, Javi, and - indubitably - Producer Brad filling the much needed void with some of the finest comedy commentary of their careers!Follow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. This week on Shat the Movies, we're kicking some serious butt with Street Fighter (1994)! Join us as we dive into the live-action adaptation of the iconic video game, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile. It's a chaotic, campy, action-packed ride full of over-the-top performances, questionable fight scenes, and plenty of laughs. Whether you're a fan of the game or just love ‘90s action flicks, tune in for a hilarious deep dive into this cult classic! Plot SummaryIn the 1994 action film Street Fighter, directed by Steven E. de Souza and loosely based on the hit video game series, Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as Colonel Guile, the all-American military hero leading a multinational force to stop the evil warlord General M. Bison, played with over-the-top flair by Raul Julia in his final film role. Set in the fictional nation of Shadaloo, the movie follows Guile's mission to rescue hostages and bring down Bison's plans for world domination. Bison has kidnapped dozens of civilians and demands a massive ransom, threatening their lives. While Guile prepares for a full-scale assault, a tangled web of subplots unfolds: Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter with a personal vendetta against Bison, works undercover to get close to her enemy; meanwhile, hustlers Ryu (Byron Mann) and Ken (Damian Chapa) are caught between working with arms dealer Sagat (Wes Studi) and Guile's forces. Add to the mix Dhalsim, Blanka, Zangief, Cammy, E. Honda, Balrog, and Vega—many of whom are barely recognizable from their video game counterparts—and the film becomes a chaotic patchwork of characters and plot threads. Despite its wildly uneven tone, cheesy dialogue, and loose connection to its source material, Street Fighter has earned cult status thanks to its campy fun and Raul Julia's scene-stealing performance. His portrayal of Bison is operatic, charismatic, and quotable—offering the movie's most memorable moments. Join our podcast review as we revisit this infamous 90s video game adaptation, exploring whether its action, absurd charm, and unintentional comedy make it a guilty pleasure or just a first-round KO. While The Cinemania Society begins its campaign of strongly-worded missives directed at their doppelgängers, it also continues its scrutiny of the 1990 film "Frankenstein Unbound," Roger Corman's final directorial oeuvre starring John Hurt, Raul Julia, and Bridget Fonda. Come join us as we discuss the first fully animated film in the Street Fighter franchise! A complicated film with multiple versions and releases, we get into the nitty gritty details, discussing the multiple soundtracks, English dubbings, forgotten plot points, and ... other stuff. The only thing missing is Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia!
Our first Season 3 Profile in Cinemania is on the pride of Puerto Rico, Raúl Rafael Carlos Juliá y Arcelay, better known as Raul Julia. Best known to Millennials as the cinematic representation of either The Addams Family's Gomez Addams or Street Fighter's M. Bison, Raul Julia's acting career saw him on stage and screens big and small. We're kicking off "Fighting VideoLAMES," a four-episode series covering cinematic adaptions of fighting video-games, with the first of two movies based on one of the most iconic, popular fighting games of all time: 1994's Street Fighter. With an all-star cast including Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia (in his final onscreen appearance), produced by the very company that made the video game, and released while Street Fighter II mania was at a high, the movie seemed like a can't-miss proposition. And, to be fair, the movie was a financial success. But between an extra chaotic production and fan dissatisfaction over liberties taken with the story and characters of the game, the movie still quickly took on the reputation of an infamous cinematic disaster. The question is, is the movie truly an unwatchable mess, or is it actually the enjoyable camp classic its growing cult of fans and defenders over the years claim it to be? Finally, the wait is over -- NEW EPISODE AHOY! Season 3 kicks off when The Cinemania Society returns to find that that the only constant in the universe is indeed change and in their attempt to return home, they learn that one can never go home again. Their reaction is, predictably, to hold a Conclave to get a handle on it. Verifier Andy chooses to scrutinize the 1990 film "Frankenstein Unbound," Roger Corman's final directorial oeuvre starring John Hurt, Raul Julia, and Bridget Fonda. In 1994 the Street Fighter name was riding high off the back of Street Fighter II, an arcade classic. This meant it was the perfect time to release a movie adaptation and who better to play the role of Guile than Jean-Claude Van Damme at the height of his fame. Much maligned at the time it's become somewhat of a cult classic despite being more GI Joe than Street Fighter. But at least some of the actors look like some of the video game characters. Plus it has Australia's own Kylie Minogue and an incredible performance from Raul Julia. Send us a textThis special Edition of our podcast , is a look back at two of our favorite motion pictures, "Casablanca" , and "Havana", just in time for "Casablanca" to be making its reappearance on the Silver Screen over the next week at theaters all across the nation. The Flashback Theater Series will be featuring the picture at various theaters around the country (At Stone Theaters at the Market Commons, for those here in the Myrtle Beach S.C. area) on February 9, 12, and Valentine's Day February 14th. We cannot urge you enough to go see it on the big screen if you have never done so, or if you want to see it again. There is nothing like it. In this episode , we have looked all over to find source material that could tell the unlikely story of this movie, made in utter chaos, with actors who did not believe in the story, and did not want to be making the movie, writer's actually rewriting and creating the story as they went along, day by day, during the production, and creating this movie that did not even have a settled end, when it was finished. But somehow out of that chaos came a cinematic masterpiece that has left only one question to debate....Is it the greatest movie ever made? or is it just one of the greatest movies ever made? No one even dares say its not great. It is also a movie that has been imitated several times but no one as of yet has ever been able to replicate its magic, though one movie came the closest even if it failed at the box office, and we will take sometime to look at that movie too, "Havana", directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Elena Olin, Robert Redford and Raul Julia. We share them both with you , just as Casablanca is about to return to the big screen, on this Valentine's Week and also because they , along with Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, served as the inspiration of our own Host's new novel that will be out near the end of 2025 or at the start of 2026. It follows a New York City fashion photographer (Dunaway) who suddenly develops the clairvoyant ability to witness disturbing serial murders from the point of view of the killer. We, you know, like I said, we're on hiatus because I... when I transitioned to this job it was, you know, extra hours, getting up to speed, and then just like mental energy taken up....I am a complete nerd. I like to do crafts, I like to make stuff. The easiest way to put it is: if they sell it at a craft store I can probably... I've probably tried it. Right now I've been making a lot of friendship bracelets, and I have one that says, "Grabthar's hammer" which is one of my favourites. And then I have another one, which actually ties into our episode today and it says, "it was Tuesday" and it is red and black beads for Bison's costume.— MoInitial ThoughtsKeen eye'd (or ear'd?) listeners will note that Squidge had covered this movie with Jay and Z-Boi previously (and here's a link to that episode). But that was a) in an older format and b) not with Mo.This is one of those movies that Chris and I watch all the time. We're chronic rewatchers....So Street Fighter, Galaxy Quest, the Pacific Rim movies. Like, you know, it's usually something that's, you know, action-y and light, you know... like movies like this they're just so fun....But like, you watch something like Street Fighter and it's just so outrageous and so silly. And like, we've talked about this a little bit on Discord and stuff, but Raul Julia's cape work alone. And I could.., it's just stunning. It's just like, he had to work at it because the flair. So I don't know if you've ever worn a cape and tried to do some of those flair moves. It's not easy. It is not easy at all— MoFull Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. What other movies would you like us to cover? Forever the creative soul, Michael Hutchence was born to be more than just a lead singer of an international rock band. From the early days, Michael embraced the theatrical possibilities of music video and was at the forefront in ensuring INXS songs captured a visual vibrancy and vitality. As such, in today's episode we dive deep into the critical performances that shaped and piqued Michael's acting urges commencing in 1982 when Michael joined forces with iconic Cold Chisel songwriter, Don Walker in contributing to the seminal 1982 Australian film Freedom with two tracks and one video, notably Speed Kills that showcases a 21 year old Michael. The next 4 years were committed to INXS' global ascent via albums Shabooh Shabaah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, plus the relentless touring attached to these triumvirate recordings. So, it took till 1986 for Michael to clear his schedule when the opportunity came up to star in Richard Lowenstein's Dogs in Space came up. A movie that embraced the punk leanings of shared living suburbia amidst musical graft, this iconic art house movie has endured and influenced generations of fans and filmmakers over 38 years, despite its middling box office performance at the time. Fast forward 4 years later post the juggernaut albums and tours that were Kick and X, Michael scratched a lifelong itch portraying famed British poet Percy Shelly, by joining Bridget Fonda, John Hurt, Jason Patric and Raul Julia in legendary Hollywood Director Roger Corman's last ever picture “Frankenstein Unbound”. A true passion piece and one that Michael embraced with unyielding commitment and joy. Finally, Michael portrayed a Record Executive mogul in the underwhelming indie feature “Limp” that despite its problems, aroused the attention of both Michael Douglas' and Quentin Tarantino's production companies with speculation of future projects in the offing. Unfortunately, Michael's untimely passing thwarted what may have led a promising acting career into a burgeoning one. What is known, Michael possessed a charisma, a stare and a glare amidst an inner drive and creativity to succeed and express. One can only imagine what more he could have achieved in this space. Love and peace Haydn & Bee https://www.change.org/p/induct-inxs-into-the-rock-roll-hall-of-fame-2025 https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/
Send us a textDo you remember the Addams Family from 1991? We remember it looking great; the cast was great and quite funny. But that was 30-plus years ago and we were just kids. Join us as we go back to the 90s and watch this family box office smash with a stacked cast and a look that made us think that Tim Burton himself made it. Was it a homage to the '60s TV series we watched on reruns after school or like many other '90s family movies, made with too much feel-good sappiness, that it makes it almost unbearable to watch? That would be a disservice to the 1st family of weird. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED OCTOBER 2021 Jer and Dan talk about the OG Addams movie that has been a staple of their lives since it was released in 1991. "The Addams Family" was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starred Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci.
Ryan and Dylan dive into some of the pitfalls of Coppola's career following his career-defining run in the seventies, including One From the Heart, Dracula, and Youth Without Youth.

“Last night, you were unhinged. You were like some desperate howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again.” We watched “The Addams Family” with our friends Michael and Callum from the amazing podcast “Once Upon a VHS” and we have the sudden urge for Girl Scout cookies. We've already covered the diva Debbie Jellinsky from the iconic sequel “Addams Family Values” in a previous episode, and now we're here to talk about where it all started. This entire cast is a complete and total serve from Angelica Huston's iconic Morticia to itty bitty Christina Ricci's perfect Wednesday and the legendary Raul Julia as the original “wife guy” Gomez. Because of the timeless nature of this movie this doesn't feel dated at all… that is until “Addams Groove” by none other than 90's legend MC Hammer graces the credits. Angelica can read you down with a simple look, Christopher LLoyd's Fester is insanely genius and MTMUG lucky charm Dan Hedaya graces the pod with his 9th appearance (that we know of!). Listen we give everyone in this cast their flowers and they all deserve them - this group of stone cold weirdos really came together and made spooky movie history. This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box office failures and decide if they deserve a second chance.Listener Request Month continues as Troy and Brad finally delve into the frequently requested film, "One from the Heart," directed by Francis Ford Coppola. We wrap up our Roger Corman tribute with the last film he directed, way back in 1990. It's a smarter-than-you'd-imagine version of the Frankenstein story that incorporates a modern-day mad scientist, time travel, and Mary Shelley herself - not to mention an all-star cast, including Raul Julia, John Hurt, and Bridget Fonda.
Before there was AppleTV, there was the 1990 film Presumed Innocent, starring Harrison Ford, Bonnie Bedelia, Raul Julia and Brain Dennehy. Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.Film lover and zine-er Katie Stebbins joins to discuss Alan J. Pakula's smart, understated legal thriller Presumed Innocent featuring Harrison Ford in one of his finest performances. Taut, richly detailed, and featuring a considerable bench of "that guy" character actors (including John Spencer, Joe Grifasi, and Brian Dennehy), the film rises above the usual theatrics of the Grisham-era Hollywood legal drama with a crackerjack, densely-packed script that rewards upon repeat viewings while never sacrificing its immediacy. We discuss Harrison Ford in the early 90s, his contemporaneous swings into dramatic territory, and the considered decisions to separate the film's protagonist Rusty Sabich from audience's familiarity with the Harrison Ford action-hero brand. Then, we look at the film's complex narrative features (adapted from a book by lawyer-turned-novelist Scott Turrow) and how the film weaves in its rich details with respect for its audience's ability to connect the dots. Finally, we discuss the Extended Presumiverse - sequel novels and television adaptations of the further works within the Scott Turrow canon, including the most recent AppleTV+ series by David E. Kelley starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard.Follow Katie Stebbins on Twitter.Check out Katie's Etsy for cool prints and film zines.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

From the horrendous acting (aside from Raul Julia as M. Bison), to the stupid character backstories, I love EVERYTHING about this movie. A classic "it's so bad it's good" flick, and honestly one of my favourite "old" movies I've watched since I started down this cinematic road. My guest this week is our resident fighting game junkie, Mike The Ref. I asked him to explain to a noob like me if any of this is actually canon to the Street Fighter universe, and we had a great time laughing the good (Bison), the bad (Guile), and the ugly (Ken) that was Street Fighter: The Movie. And before we fight in the streets, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me what the last game on the planet is that I would review on this show. “Once again, it's Clint Eastwood as a cop, so he is costing everyone millions of dollars.” - Chris On this week's We Hate Movies, our dumbest theme month yet, SHEENPRIL continues with a wild conversation on the totally outrageous Clint Eastwood movie, The Rookie! How hilariously inept is Raul Julia's car thief mastermind? How incredible is the opening car carrier chase sequence? How great is this cast full of real-deal character actors? Did Sheen's character really need to drive that motorcycle through the door? Couldn't we get a little more Tom Skerritt and a lot more Lara Flynn Boyle? And what are the odds this movie was a re-worked “one last case” Dirty Harry film? The Rookie stars Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, Pepe Serna, Marco Rodríguez, Xander Berkeley, Tony Plana, Paul Ben-Victor, and Tom Skerritt as Eugene Ackerman; directed by Clint Eastwood.
