“I think I always had a tendency to be a little different.”Hamish Steele brings us Flee, an animated documentary about the journey of Amin, a gay man and refugee to Denmark from Afghanistan. We talk about how animation can uniquely serve documentary films, how Amin's identity as a gay man intertwines with his experience as a refugee, and how this movie repeatedly broke our hearts but also how queerness gave us hope. Also, Hamish talks with us about his experience including queer characters and stories when creating for younger audiences, particularly with regards to his animated series, Dead End: Paranormal Park.Pre-order Go-Man: Champion of the EarthFind more from Hamish!Film Release: December 3, 2021‘Flee': Creating a New Narrative Language for the Animated Documentary Oscar Contender (IndieWire)‘Flee' Writer/Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen Breaks Down a Scene | 94th Oscars (Oscars on YouTube)Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveDiscord | PatreonE-mail us: pixarpodcast@gmail.comMore from DougMore from DerekTheme song features: “Stasis” by Eagle-Eyed Tiger | SourceClosing song: “Free At Last” by Uno Helmersson
Ditch the TARDIS for Tokyo Tower! Hamish Steele returns for Toho's second attempt at King Kong, which includes a supervillain named Dr. Who (!!!) creating Mechani-Kong, a giant robot ape version of the lonely and horny real deal. We get into this movie's origins as a Rankin-Bass cartoon -- and the on-set conflicts caused by those American co-producers -- along with all the James Bond DNA (including a literal Bond girl), iconic English dubbing, and how this is a better sequel to classic King Kong than you'd expect.Pre-order Go-Man: Champion of Earth!Part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectivePatreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiA Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatWikizillaLost Media Wiki

Broad City: "Stories" The great Hamish Steele returns for an episode told (almost) entirely through not-quite Instagram stories! As Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer take a 30th birthday walk along the entire length of New York City, we talk about this show's insights into social media and millennial culture, the weird political space it occupied by straddling pre- and post-Trump America, and how this gifable Tumblr darling of the late 2010s went under the radar in its final season. Plus, butt videos as legitimately good gifts, a touch of cultural appropriation, and the time Guillermo Díaz flirted with Derek. Find more from Hamish! The dragons are once again delighted to welcome Hamish Steele, author of popular comics/ graphic novels Deadendia and Pantheon, and creator of hit Netflix series Deadend: Paranormal Park, to the show. (And with some exciting news too!) This week Jules and Madeleine take a look at that peculiar but appealing phenomenon in long running TV shows - the musical episode. As a long time lover of musicals and a creator of just such a musical episode, Hamish is ideally situated to wade in on the discussion. Tracing the 'lineage' of the trend from cult classics like 'Fame' (1980) through a few very dicey attempts in the 80s and early 90s, before the sub-genre was cemented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this dissection looks at why a musical episode might be appealing, why it can make or break a show with your audience, and why sometimes it doesn't work. Under the microscope this week: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Deadend: Paranormal Park, Ally McBeal, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic.
This week we're shining a light on a new animated show that debuted on Netflix earlier this year, Dead End: Paranormal Park, based on the comics by creator Hamish Steele. Barney and Norma are two teens who come to Phoenix Park looking for jobs, and find that the place is haunted! They have to deal with demonic possessions and shadowy owners alongside running theme park rides, but they ultimately find that this is a place they can be their authentic selves. We talk about the show's clear conversations about LGBTQ+ issues for a younger audience, its knowledge of real theme park operations, demons who eat trash, a hat that's too small for a human but perfect for a dog, and musicals. After recording this, season 2 of the show was confirmed for release on October 13th!! Also, in this episode we use the phrase "FTM" in reference to a voice actor, and would like to correct ourselves. Trans Man is the more universally appropriate term, and we'll use that in the future! „The fear world is my real world.” :)
Maybe you've seen the new animated series on Netflix entitled Dead End: Paranormal Park, featuring a cast of queer characters working at an amusement park that might be a portal to hell. I spoke to the show's creator, Hamish Steele, several years ago when his comic book Deadendia was in the early stages of being adapted into a show, and now that Dead End has been completed and released, we're revisiting that conversation this week to hear about the real-life friends who inspired the story… and also Hamish's controversial opinions about the difference between films that merely have queer people in them versus films that queer people actually like. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a weekly newsletter where I write stories about queer pop culture and also link to cute animal videos — subscribe to that at mattbaume.com. In today's episode I talk with Dead End Paranormal Park creator Hamish Steele. We discuss the LGBTQ themes, the character dynamics and more.
We talk to Hamish Steele, creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park, about his new Netflix series, what it was like to transition from the page to the screen with their original story, why fatphobia sneaks its way into animation, and why trans and queer representation thrives when it's both overt and subtextual. Hamish Steele is the creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park, a new animated comedy horror series premiering this Thursday June 16th on Netflix. The show is based on his popular DeadEndia graphic novels, about two teens who work at a terrifyingly exciting amusement park. The charming and talented Steele shares what makes Dead End a scary good time.
This week the dragons are delighted to welcome back special guest Hamish Steele to talk about his forthcoming Netflix series Dead End: Paranormal Park. Based on the DeadEndia graphic novels, the setting of the series makes Hamish the perfect person to join this week's discussion. Carnivals, circuses and fair grounds are niche but popular settings for speculative fiction. As liminal spaces where the usual rules are suspended, they are ideal places to look at the world in a different way or challenge mundane boundaries. Their inherent whimsy, surreality and eeriness allow them to fit into multiple different genres - mystery, fantasy, horror, even science fiction. But where does this setting and the sense of suspension of rules originate? And what exactly is out fascination with them born of? Find out in this week's episode. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
Jared Milrad interviews Hamish Steele and Zach Barack, the creator and lead actor of DEAD END: PARANORMAL PARK, a horror-comedy animated series on Netflix that follows the adventures of Barney (he/him) (a queer trans teen voiced by trans actor Zach Barack), his friend Norma, and a slew of wise-cracking demons. Hamish and Zach open up about why they're excited to be part of this groundbreaking series, why queer and trans representation matters, and how to make Hollywood more inclusive, equitable, and representative.
Harry and Rory are joined by their brother and creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park on Netflix, Hamish Steele, as they return to the world of Pokémon for the fourth animated movie! Ash, Pikachu and 'the rest' encounter the mythical Celebi and the time-travelling Sam on their journey, but with the forest under threat from a villainous Team Rocket marauder, can they prevent an ecological disaster? Good afternoon! This week we are an Egyptian History podcast, at least for a moment! This week's NEWS 0:08:04 starts with a few minor points before breaking into the rest, starting with release updates for Across the Spider-Verse 0:10:22 parts 1 and 2. There are also some release changes on the horizon for the Batgirl movie 0:13:21. It's become time to finally address the Disney vs Florida situation 0:18:05, and let me be clear, I am NOT in agreement with the government of Florida in any way. Then we have, on a lighter note, a rumored Elsa Bloodstone casting 0:27:26 for Werewolf y Night, Love and Thunder Casting Rumors 0:30:21 regarding Angela, Thor's half-sister with a complicated comic boo history, and the alleged Illuminati Lineup for Multiverse of Madness 0:41:11, in theaters next week! While only a few, this week's comic PICKS 0:56:16 are mostly all bangers. The adjoining PULLS 1:03:14 for this week have a TON to look forward to! While discussing MOON KNIGHT ep.4 1:10:44, we temporarily transition the podcast to being an Egyptian History podcast, because I can't help myself, and they got a LOT wrong in that episode, to be honest. But there's always the fun comic references and theories, too! Then it's YOUNG JUSTICE s4 1:31:19 episode 19, where we are starting to see the light at the end of the complex tunnel. Marvel COMICS July Solicits 1:36:08 are quite long this month, and DC Comics JULY Solicitations 1:49:22 are a bit shorter, but full of some great material to look forward to. And that's that! Definitely be sure to check out the Yancy Street Specials, as the May Special will be all about Patsy Walker! And keep an eye out later this week for a SURPRISE special, regarding Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen! Stay hydrated, keep it sweaty, see you next week! Welcome back to Part 02 of our conversation with DeadEndia creator and showrunner - and pitch extraordinaire - Hamish Steele! Last episode we talked about how the original DeadEndia story drew from some of the real life experiences Hamish and his friends had, and how our own real life experiences are, and can be, reflected in the shows that we watch and create. Now in Part 02, we're picking up again as Hamish considers what's most important about DeadEndia that he really wanted to protect as it became an animated show, as well as: - Plenty of pitching advice gleaned from Hamish's years of experience (including a link on diyanimation.show to his pitching webinar, 'How to Pitch Perfectly'!) - How collaboration can bolster representation and amplify others' voices - Hamish's wonderfully straight-forward answer to ‘guilty' pleasures - And his dearest wish for DeadEndia, and how you can help make it happen! This episode is an indie production from your hosts, Jessica Doll & Lauren Morse. Our theme music is provided by Azureflux.
As Pokémon celebrates its 25th anniversary, Harry and Rory are joined once again by their brother and creator of Deadendia, Hamish Steele, as they talk about the 20th Pokémon movie, I Choose You! A celebratory reset/remake of the early anime series episodes, PTM:ICY! retells Ash Ketchum's first steps on his journey to become a Pokémon Master, the beginnings of his friendship with Pikachu and a quest to battle the legendary Ho-oh. On the way, the intrepid trio discuss the movie's references to Pokémon past and present, and what this year's anniversary celebrations may entail. But is I Choose You a choice worth making? Hey you! Welcome back to The DIY Animation Show! We're kicking off Season 5 with DeadEndia creator and showrunner, Hamish Steele! Possibly best currently known for his graphic novel, DeadEndia*, Hamish also has wide experience of developing and pitching animated shows, directing and writing with Blink Industries, has won an Eisner award, AND is a self-confessed zine enthusiast (if you ever get your eyes on his Paul Rudd zine, you won't regret it!). His work is silly and fun, and infused with warmth and a real heart for human experience. We were super excited to speak with him all about DeadEndia - to discover how his webcomic became an animated series, and what that process was like - and enjoyed an incredibly uplifting and astute conversation, ranging from his broad work experience to his and his friends' own personal experience of life. Today in Part 01 Hamish shares with us... - All about Deadendia - its roots, its heart, and its 10-year journey from short, to webcomic, to published book, to animated series - His experiences of show development and writing - What it's like showrunning during the UK's covid-19 lockdown, and finding ways to keep the team's spirits buoyed up - And the importance of being part of the conversation about LGBT representation This episode is an indie production from your hosts, Jessica Doll & Lauren Morse. Our theme music is provided by Azureflux.

My guest this week is Hamish Steele, whose graphic novel Deadendia is being adapted into an animated series at Netflix. The show will feature a gay trans man as the lead character, and it's inspired both by Hamish's friends and his love of shows like Dr Who and movies like The Addams Family Values, which feature queer-ish if not explicitly queer ensembles. Hamish is also running a Kickstarter right now for a comic book called Croc and Roll, that promises to be TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA meets JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS meets SCOTT PILGRIM meets... big gay alligator tears. I am super excited to chat with him about his inspirations and his controversial opinions about the difference between films with queer people in them versus films that queer people actually like. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that The Sewers of Paris is on Twitter and Facebook, where I post clips of the stuff that we talk about on each episode. This week you can look forward to clips from The Addams Family, Dr. Who, and from Hamish's own animation projects. And speaking of videos, check out my YouTube series Culture Cruise, where I do a deep dive into LGBTQ milestones in entertainment that changed the world. Last month's video was all about the documentary Paris is Burning, and you can find that by searching YouTube for Culture Cruise. And I hope you'll join me for our next fun friendly livestream on August 1st at 11am Pacific. It's a nice relaxing time to just hang out and chat. There's a link at the top of the Sewers of Paris twitter feed. Also if you're looking for more queer podcasts, check out my narrative comedy shows Queens of Adventure and Queens of Adventure Legends for an escape into a world of fantasy, with drag queens playing Dungeons & Dragons. Harry and Rory are joined once again by their guest (and brother) Hamish Steele to take a look at how the world of Pokémon has been translated into a live-action, big-screen, urban-fantasy neo-noir for kids! With Ryan Reynolds providing the voice of a crime-solving, coffee-drinking talking Pikachu, of course. They discuss fan theories, fan service and how this all slots into the PCU (Pokémon Cinematic Universe). It's very twisty. This podcast contains SPOILERS for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019). We know we've meant a lot to some of you but you've meant the WORLD to us. We may be ending but we see this project as a huge success. Harry and Rory return to the Pokémon world, joined by their brother (and comic and cartoon maker) Hamish Steele, for the second big screen outing of Ash, Pikachu and friends, as they try to thwart a collector from capturing legendary Pokémon - like that's a bad thing. They share their praise for Team Rocket and their hatred of Tracey, but what about everything else the rest of the film and its preceding shorts, Pikachu's Rescue Adventure and Slowking's Day, have to offer? They tackle all the film's big topics - cloning, slavery, eugenics, the meaning of life - but there's also plenty of time to appreciate Team Rocket's puns, marvel at Mewtwo's eye for architecture, and tear up when Pikachu cries at the end. Plus, they discuss bonus films Pikachu's Summer Vacation and Origin of Mewtwo. Is this film the very best, like no film ever was? This podcast contains SPOILERS for Pokémon: The First Movie (1998). Jade Rose was off sick, so we've roped in a Box Not Included All-Star to join Hamish Steele in a sickening chat about Drag and RuPaul's Drag Race. It's Sewers of Paris' Matt Baume! After a brief geekout about Deep Space Nine and The Golden Girls, we talk the history of drag, how we define it and our personal experiences before delving into the recent (and outgoing) controversies. NOTE: As two cis, white, gay men, Hamish and Matt do not aim to settle the issues once and for all. We can only offer our limited opinions and this episode is meant as more of a geek out then a heated debate. We will be returning to this topic in the future with more diverse guests. We aptly cover the show’s past, present and future and consider how we’d contribute to the show given the opportunity. This week, your hosts Jade Rose and Hamish Steele take a step back from leading the discussion and answer listener submitted questions! It's our first NoBoxVoxPop! Questions range from silly to serious, big to small. Today, we try and answer questions such as: why the Marvel movies are so popular and the DC movies so derided, how to respond to homophobia in geeky spaces and what fantasy class our favourite sci-fi heroes would be! Special thanks for our audio and theme music to Graham Waller www.grahamwaller.com If you want to get in contact or send in a question to our next NoBoxVosPop, we're BoxNotIncluded on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and @gmail.com and we have our individual Twitters at @HamishSteele and @JadeOxfordRose.
WARNING: The following podcast contains major spoilers for Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and minor spoilers for the book series. Although you may wish to continue listening to the dreary discussions of Hamish Steele and Jade Rose, I implore you to seek entertainment elsewhere. Perhaps there's a new episode of The Adventure Zone or that half-listened to How Did This Get Made you've been putting off. For whatever choice you make, it is guaranteed to be a wise alternative to Episode 3 of Box Not Included - where our hosts discuss A Series of Unfortunate Events - the books, the movie and the new Netflix series. Heroes never die! And now - they aren't all straight! Hamish Steele and Jade Rose are joined by our first guest, Beastly Beverage's Gabriel, to geek out about Blizzard's online shooter Overwatch! The canon, fanon and ... cannons! For those who haven't played it, we dissect what the game is all about, some of the characters and how the fandom has grown and in some ways influenced the game itself. We then, of course, talk about Tracer - the game's mascot and first confirmed LGBT representation! Who will be next? WARNING: The following podcast contains the mention and discussion of homophobic slurs. Hamish Steele and Jade Rose open up the series with a chat about labels - our own, other peoples, their importance and use and what to call this great big, colourful, wonderful mess that is our community. As well as labels to describe our sexualities and gender, they also dissect the terms "Geek", "Nerd", "Dork" and the increasingly controversial "Gamer".
