We are SO excited to bring you our 50th episode! Thank you, as always, for joining our host Teresa Palacios Smith for un cafecito with three highly intelligent leaders – Dr. Chitra Dorai, Dr. Vanessa Montanez, and Desiree Patno. Listen in to hear these leaders describe the moments that brought them where they are today.  Meet the Leaders Dr. Chitra Dorai – CEO/Founder of Amicus Brain Dr. Vanessa Montanez – Senior VP and Community Lending National Sales Manager at Citi National Bank Desiree Patno – CEO/Founder of Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem  The Leaders' Journeys Vanessa has been in residential lending for 27 years. She fell in love with helping families achieve their homeownership dreams, and that passion took her all the way to thinking of the big picture and helping families at a national level. Chitra was with IBM for 20 years as a top technical leader, CEO, and IBM fellow. She started her company for personal reasons – her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and she realized she was not alone in dealing with the challenges of being a caregiver. Desiree has always been a problem solver. She loved selling homes, but was always looking for the next problem to be solved – in the foreclosure crisis, she became a connector and solution strategist to protect communities.  The Moments When Everything Changed Dr. Chitra was VERY successful at IBM, but when she became one of her mother's caregivers, she knew she had to throw herself behind a new passion. Her product uses AI to support caregivers at all stages of supporting those with neurological degenerative disease. Dr. Vanessa's moment came when she was laid off. She took her severance package and decided to spend it on something she truly loved: learning. She went back to school to understand more about executive leadership in the wake of the 2008 crisis. Desiree was recruited into working in the gender space of highly wealthy people in real estate. “Clubhouse” is a collective-created audio app that grew out of the pandemic shutdown to bring people of many specializations together to connect and share ideas.  Tools the Leaders Recommend Desiree likes Gamma, an AI company that can help you think and make connections.  Chitra's app, Amicus Brain, can be found at http://amicusbrain.com.  Mckenzie Institute and the Urban Institute have well-researched articles.  Leaders' Favorite Books/Courses Desiree surfs news columns to see what is currently happening. She likes small snippets and soundbites. Chitra: The Story of My Experiments With Truth by Mahatma Gandhi  Vanessa: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey  Leaders' Favorite Quotes Vanessa: “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was going to end, it became a butterfly.” Chitra: “If you do not work on important problems, it's unlikely you'll do important work.” Desiree: “Technology-Human Balance.” Teresa: “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”  When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. So let's build each other up, and shine brighter than the sun. What is a trailblazer? An extraordinary person who sets new paths and paves futures for generations to come. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three trailblazers in the real estate industry. These women have expanded the realm of real estate to make the industry a more diverse, professional, and welcoming space for everyone.  Meet the trailblazers: Tiffany Curry - Owner and CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Tiffany Curry & Co., REALTORS® Erica Courtney - CEO, 2020vet, Inc. Desirée Patno - CEO, Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem, Chairwoman of NAWRB's Diversity Inclusion & Leadership Council How the trailblazers got their start in real estate: Tiffany did not intend to be in real estate, planning to enter corporate law. However, when a classmate said she was getting her real estate license, Tiffany decided to get hers as well and never looked back. Erica was bored in college and enlisted in the army. But after the birth of her two kids, she needed more flexibility to spend time with them, so she left and started her own company. Desirée gave up her initial career when she realized real estate was a space she could grow so much more. She now consults, influences, and shapes other people's real estate journeys to build more sustainable lives and futures.  Leading others in a pandemic (and post-pandemic) world: An effective leader does what is best for the team. As a broker-owner, Tiffany makes decisions for her company based on how it affects her agents. Leads should listen and use what they hear to inspire productive action.  It's not about perfection; it's moving forward, trying our best, and knowing our people to understand their problems and help address them.  The importance of staying positive online: So much content online and on the news is negative. Taking just five minutes to engage in a positive or productive action online can establish a powerful brand that builds your reputation.  Balance personal and professional content on your platforms. After all, it's not companies following your content; it's the humans behind them. Overcoming challenges as women: It's about acting with integrity and authenticity. Leadership is about being ourselves but being willing to adapt based on the people we lead. Women need to treat other women how they want to be treated. While we want to be on an equal playing field, we often aren't sure how to conduct ourselves on that equal playing field. Women still need to respect other women and evaluate our mentality in how we treat other women. Find and purchase the Women Housing Ecosystem Report (WHER) at nawrb.com/womenhousingecosystem. Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. For more great content from Teresa, connect with her on LinkedIn, join her Women Who Lead Series on Facebook and subscribe to her YouTube channel. I want to welcome back Desiree Patno to the show! This woman is on FIRE when it comes to making a place for women at the table in the real estate industry. Her drive to raise the number of opportunities available to women, the number of women at the top, and tremendously increase the number of female homeowners is inspiring. As the CEO & founder of NAWRB, The National Association of Women in Real Estate Businesses, she is making a difference for women in business everywhere.   65% of real estate agents are women, yet most of the leadership in this industry consists of men. We need to start connecting with one another so we can improve our company culture for both men and women in real estate. If we take the time to understand what men go through and men take the time to understand what women go through in this business, we can find common ground to connect and make a real difference in this industry. Women have so much to offer and we usually offer it while juggling a million other things at the same time! I want to see more women in leadership, more women at the board room table, and more importantly, more women believing in themselves and aspiring to become homeowners. It is possible, the resources are out there, and Desiree is playing such a pivotal role in making sure all women have the opportunities they need to make those dreams a reality. As women, how do we become better leaders? For Desiree, it goes back to her childhood having parents that gave her the greatest gift, in my opinion, which is self-confidence. Not only did she learn how to pick herself back up when she fell, but also how to face each obstacle head on and better herself because of each challenge she encountered. After all, life defines who you are based on how you react to those bumps in the road. She is the founder and CEO of the National Association of Women in Real Estate Business focusing on diversity inclusion in every facet of business in real estate. They don’t work in your business, but help you work ON your business. We had SUCH a great time sharing our views on women’s leadership and the importance of having enough self-confidence to jump out of your comfort zone in order for your business to soar. It’s all about growing, self-confidence, vision, a support system, and then ultimately having the ability to keep it all going. Take a listen and give us your feedback!
