Power Players | Latonia Donaldson, Rosario Lawrence, Dr. Vanessa Montañez - 047

Learning about the banking and mortgage industry can help you reach your dreams of becoming a homeowner. In this month's episode, I'm sitting down with three lovely ladies who are striving to make positive changes in gaining access to homeownership, financial education, and inclusive leadership. Grab your cafecito and join us in this lovely conversation.   Meet The Leaders Latonia Donaldson, SVP National Director of Multicultural Lending, PrimeLending Dr. Vanessa Montañez, SVP, Head of Community Lending, CityNational Bank Rosario Lawrence, Area Sales Manager, Newrez Home Loan Division Humble Beginnings in the Lending Industry and Leadership Latonia started as a processor to gain an understanding of the banking industry, then switched over to becoming a loan officer. An unexpected change happened that helped her realize the impact she was making on families achieving their homeownership dreams. This led her to transition into leadership roles with Wells Fargo, which brought her to her role now. Just like Latonia, Rosario started her banking career in 1994. Even though her first position was supposed to just help her get through college, she ended up falling in love with the industry. She decided to go down the leadership path, thanks to someone pulling her aside and showing her how it was a lucrative career that helped children. Dr. Vanessa's father accidentally guided her into business after telling her that the art major she was going for wasn't a good fit for the lifestyle she was accustomed to. After entering the banking industry, she saw how it was a powerful fuel for creating generational wealth. Seeing how transformative homeownership is for people, she joined leadership roles to ensure that the underrepresented population can continue to reach their dreams.   Challenges in Financial Leadership Roles as Minority Women Rosario shares how when there are shifts in the financial space, it impacts minorities in gaining homeownership. She becomes the voice of this demographic to ensure market shifts don't keep them from owning a home. Dr. Vanessa dives into how there have been many times she was sitting at a table and certain people would talk over her. She realized if she was going through this in her position, then how many other women of color were facing the same issue as her. Not wanting to keep being quiet about the issue, she decided she needed to be on the opposite side of the table to make positive changes for equality in homeownership. Latonia also faced the same difficulties as Dr. Vanessa. She shares how most women, no matter their backgrounds, often struggle with imposter syndrome. We're sitting at tables and when sharing our ideas, they often get ignored. But when someone else says the same thing, it becomes a great idea. This is why Latonia and the other two ladies are in the positions they are today: to stand up for rights and be a voice for those who are often underrepresented.   Mentors, Quotes, and Books Dr. Vanessa is passionate about reading and admires women who embody strength, vulnerability, and can lead with grace under pressure. She recommends Michelle Obama's book, "Becoming," and enjoys the quote, "Becoming is not about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain need, it's about the journey of continuous growth." Dr. Vanessa shares how the quote reflects that the process of growth is ongoing and contributes to one's identity. Latonia shares how she admires the CEO of TIAA, Thasunda Brown Duckett. She believes that Thasunda simplifies what it means to be a leader in the financial space while maintaining her authentic self. She's not afraid to share her journey with others and to help lift them up. Latonia's favorite quote from Thasunda is, "I rock my title, I own my character. My title belongs to my employer, my character is Thasunda Brown Duckett's ownable asset." Her favorite book is by Don Miguel Ruiz, "The Four Agreements," because it deeply resonates with her leadership style. Rosario doesn't have one person of admiration; instead, she celebrates every single person who is fighting and achieving their goals.   When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. So, let's build each other up and shine brighter than the sun. With all the changes going on in the real estate industry, how can you embrace them and become an effective leader? In this episode, I chat with three leading ladies, Jaynie Atanasoff, Jan Hayse, and Katie Stephans, as they share their stories and how they are embracing these changes. Grab your cafecito and join us to get a fresh perspective on what it means to lead at the highest level. Meet The Leaders Jaynie Atanasoff, Vice President, Shared Success Center, HomeServices of America,  jaynieatanasoff@homeservices.com Jan Hayse, President, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Beach Properties of Florida, jan@bpfla.com Katie Stephans, Vice President, Enterprise Applications, HomeServices of America, KatieStephans@homeservices.com Becoming Real Estate Leaders Katie joined the real estate world during one of the worst years, which was in 2008. But thanks to her technology background, she was able to bring fresh ideas into the industry to help businesses grow during that time. Jaynie comes from an HR background, which helped her transition into the real estate industry effectively with a customer service mindset. Also, realizing how important feedback is during change helped her excel in her transition into her new role. Jan joined the real estate industry in 2011 after leaving the banking industry and wanting a professional career that would work around her kids' schedule at that time. Always up for a challenge and networking with others, she was able to get outside her comfort zone to become a real estate agent. Embracing Adversity Jaynie shares her experience of when her mother developed dementia and how it helped her embrace a new perspective of change. Things happened unexpectedly, and there's nothing you can do about it besides adapting and keeping going. Reflecting on this experience allowed her to learn how to handle tough situations professionally and get through them. Katie shares another personal experience of her struggles with infertility. You expect it would be easy to enter motherhood, but for her, it was a ten-year struggle. This showed her you always have to put one foot forward and never give up, no matter how challenging the situation is. Embracing AI technology has not always been easy for Jan, and it was even harder having to help train her team. However, by surrounding herself with other leaders, she was able to embrace the change and help her team out. Creating Space for Life One of the hardest challenges every woman faces, no matter what industry they're in, is balancing work and personal life, especially when working from home. If you're a Type A person, like Katie, she shares how important it is to have boundaries when it comes to spending time with family and friends. Jan shares why a morning routine can help create that “me time” that every woman needs before starting her day. It helps put you in the right mindset to tackle the work tasks at hand. Jaynie likes to be mindful of what is going on at the moment. Also, when work is done, she completely turns the computer off to enjoy fun activities like golf, being with friends, and bowling. Favorite Quotes and Book Recommendations Jan: Favorite Podcast is Feel Better Live More hosted by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. Her favorite books are Outwitting the Devil and The Wealth Blueprint by Napoleon Hill. Favorite quote “Wherever you go, there you are.”  Janie: Favorite audiobooks are Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins and The Women by Kristin Hannah. Her favorite quote is “She believed she could, so she did.”  Katie: Favorite quote “just progress over perfection.” She shares how by showing up means you're moving forward toward your goals no matter what is going on in your life. When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. So, let's build each other up and shine brighter than the sun. This month, we celebrate fair housing with our Resilient Leaders, Beth Jimenez, Veronica Hanna, and Debbie McCabe. These leaders sit down with Theresa Palacios Smith to discuss their journeys, how they support their teams through changes in the industry, and advice for young leaders. Meet the Leaders Beth Jimenez - Senior Vice President, Enterprise Lending Strategy & Initiatives Manager Lending Institution Veronica Hanna - Managing Broker/North Scottsdale Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Arizona Properties Debbie McCabe - Region President Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach, REALTORS®/Trident Group The Leaders' Journeys Veronica technically started her real estate journey back in high school! Now, she works with everyone, from new agents learning the basics to experienced agents navigating negotiations of luxury properties. Beth started her career right out of college. She loved it immediately and stuck with it, despite starting as an agent in 2007! Debbie's sister was in real estate and Debbie joined her. Debbie was a part of an early team before there were many other teams! Debbie no longer sells, she works more directly managing agents. Guiding Teams Through Difficult Times Debbie: Challenging times bring opportunities. While change can be uncomfortable in the moment, learning to navigate it can lead to amazing growth. Beth: “Don't ever let a crisis go to waste.” Change is constant in the industry, and education is key to being able to move forward despite fearmongering in the media. Veronica: Change makes us better. Veronica seeks to motivate her team so they're excited about these times rather than afraid.  The Role of Mentorship Beth: It's easier for others to see the best parts of you rather than you seeing these good things in yourself. Mentees drive these relationships, so don't be afraid to ask for help! Debbie: Her most impactful mentors were not formal mentors but people she connected with over the years. As a mentor herself, she focuses on giving. Veronica: Mentees have a responsibility to work for their growth – they have to want to grow. Veronica's mentors expanded her knowledge and now she gets to pass that knowledge along. The Leader's Favorite Quotes Veronica: “Stop it!” – Bob Newhart. The quote is about overthinking… when you're driving yourself crazy, just stop it! Beth: “Women need to shift from thinking, ‘I'm not ready to do that,' to ‘I want to do that, and I'll learn by doing it.'” – Sheryl Sandberg (from her book, Lean In) Debbie: “Remember that failure is an event, not a person.” and “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” – both by Zig Ziglar When you help another woman rise, we all shine. Last month, we celebrated Black History Month with three incredible leaders. In this episode of Women Who Lead, we shared ‘un cafecito' with Anita Legacy Blue, Alicia Knapp, and Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose. Listen in to be inspired by their advice for future leaders and their views on creating a legacy. Meet the Leaders Alicia Knapp - President & CEO, BHE Renewables Anita Legacy Blue - LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance 2024 President Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose - President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers The Leaders' Journeys Alicia moved up through Berkshire Hathaway by always striving to exceed expectations. She had the courage to take on challenging positions early in her career. Anita has always been a servant leader. She was offered the opportunity to work at the national level when other leaders saw her willingness to show up and be accountable. Courtney was “tapped on the shoulder” to move up into leadership roles, and initially, she said “no.” The push she received from a mentor convinced her to consider the opportunity.  Understanding and Responding to Biases Anita was in the Air Force for 35 years. She understands being in a male-dominated world. She knows how to rise up, call out injustice, and bring truth to light. Courtney has learned how important consistency is. Gaining respect is not about inspiring fear in others - instead, we must consistently carry ourselves in a way that demands respect. Alicia worked with very few women on the front lines in the construction and utility businesses. She became the executive sponsor of the women's employee resource group, so she had the opportunity to encourage women to enter roles in male-dominated industries. Mentoring Others Alicia recommends leading by example. We also have to show up and put effort in when working with those we are mentoring.  Courtney's responsibilities get in the way of mentoring individuals, but volunteering and acting in service are great ways to connect with mentors. Anita recommends learning to be mentored. Good mentors must be good mentees - don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Dealing with Conflict Anita suggests being empathetic and listening to others, but ultimately, we have to maintain integrity and lean into what's right. Courtney advises people to solve problems by upholding the rules that keep our organizations working. Leading assertively is easy for Alicia, while empathy does not come as naturally to her. She keeps people around her that balance her and hold her accountable. Advice for Future Leaders Courtney: Be a leader that others want to follow. Anita: Excellence in all you do, and lead by faith. Alicia: Use your strengths to uplift others. Favorite Reads and Quotes Breakthrough Success by Anita Legacy Blue, and Our Shades of Black History by Anita Legacy Blue, and her podcast. Her favorite quote is, “Your life is your legacy.”  Courtney: Grit by Angela Duckworth. Her favorite quote is, “The time is always right to do what's right” by Martin Luther King, Jr.  Alicia: Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg and A Higher Standard by General Ann Dunwoody When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. So, let's build each other up and shine brighter than the sun. She still works as a realtor serving clients, but she also serves agents from the local to the international level. After a career as a school teacher, her path shifted when she became a mother. Jan fell in love with being a real estate agent the moment she took her first class and has found her passion and many amazing personal connections. Pam's career in real estate began when she joined a real estate network. Though she loved the work, she worked in PR for many years. She returned to real estate because she enjoyed it so much! Overcoming Obstacles in the Industry Pam: Realtors have a responsibility to educate people on what agents actually do. Help buyers and sellers understand how agents can help them and how they help the community overall. Vicky: We have to evolve with the times. Skilled, knowledgeable realtors will be successful during this time. Do not stop learning so that you can offer value to clients. Jan: Being open-minded and willing to make changes is so important, but we also have to ignore some of the noise we hear - we are responsible for being on the ground with an awareness of how the industry is, and continue to defend it and build it up. Mentorship and Sponsorship Jan: Take inspiration from others, even if you can't find a mentor to work with. Jan is inspired by many women. One of her mentors/inspirations is Toni McGowan. Pam: People like to be asked for help! If there's someone you respect, just ask them out for coffee and just see what you can learn. Vicky: She had doors opened for her by Nancy Suvarnamani and Elizabeth Mendel-Hall, to name a couple. She says, “Your network is your net worth.” Favorite Quote Jan: “You're not better than anybody, but you're as good as anybody.” Vicky: “She who humbles herself shall be exalted, and she who humbles herself shall be humbled.” Pam: “I think if the world can be saved, it will be by women,” and, “The woman's mission is not to enhance the masculine spirit, but to express the feminine. Hers is not to preserve a man-made world, but to create a human world.” When you help another woman rise, we all shine. And that's how we make an impact. Belinda was an attorney looking for a career where she could also have the freedom to be involved in her kids' lives. Nathaly is a natural saleswoman. Her #1 priority is to offer her kids an excellent education, and pursuing this led her to real estate. Mistakes Made Along the Way Belinda's experience as an attorney gave her a mindset of driving points home and winning. She had to relax and remember that real estate is about people. Nathaly used to let negative thinking hold her back. Also, as an agent, she had to learn to care for herself and her body's wellness rather than give all her time to clients. Tabitha reminds us of the importance of quality family time. Agents are always reachable, so we must make time for our families. Achieving Goals Nathaly reminds herself of her goals every day. She writes them down, uses pictures, and maintains a positive mindset to keep her going. Tabitha uses number-focused goals and puts them on her computer so she sees them daily. Also - she maintains clear lines of communication all the time. Her goals are always the goals of her team. She continuously educates herself and those around her.  Leaders' Favorite Quotes Belinda: “In real estate, the three key factors are location, location, and people.” – Barbara Corcoran Tabitha: “I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Nathaly: “Love always wins.” When you help another woman rise, we all shine. Our host, Teresa Palacios Smith sits down for “un cafecito” with Kim Bakey, Liz Goodchild, and Janet Mauldin, three truly impactful leaders. Listen in for advice on your real estate career, and the three most important qualities for leaders to have. Meet the Leaders Kim Bakey - CEO of HomeServices of Iowa & Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty Liz Goodchild - Team Leader of The Goodchild Team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Starck Real Estate Janet Mauldin - VP Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties The Most Important Qualities for Leadership Kim: Integrity, authenticity, and the willingness to get your hands dirty and do the heavy lifting. If you're not doing the work alongside your team, you will not build the same level of respect as if they see you really doing the work. Janet: First, communication is key, both in how you reach others, but also in how you respond to feedback. Secondly, a strong ability to analyze data is necessary to make strategic decisions. Thirdly, Janet recommends having a passion for real estate as a business. Liz: Have a “servant's heart.” No strong, well-respected leader gets there to feed their ego – people will see through it. If you are able to set aside your aspirations to help others achieve their goals, you will build trust with your team. Also, you become a role model, so you must step up your game. Advice for Your Career in Real Estate Liz: It's important to accept critique, but also be willing to accept that not everyone is going to like you, and you have to accept that. Kim: Never give up. Having a positive attitude and embracing difficulty will help you achieve things you never thought possible. Janet: Instead of always saying “yes,” be willing to say “maybe” to people. Ask yourself if saying yes will advance you, your business, or your joy.  Leaders' Favorite Books Ken Blanchard books, such as Fish! In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three powerful leaders to talk about creating a positive work environment, taking risks, and overcoming bias.  Meet the leaders Melanie Weidenbach -  COO at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate Tammy J. Maddente - President First Weber Inc. Reneé Gonzales - Chief Executive Officer at Long Realty Company How the leaders got started in real estate Reneé started in a mortgage organization working as a loan officer. 22 years ago she got the opportunity to move to Tucson and work for Long Companies where she now serves as CEO.  Tammy started her career in retail and found very quickly that she loved helping people put together their wardrobes. She discovered her love for service and was recommended by a close family friend to start doing real estate.  Melanie was introduced to real estate through family relations and spent the first part of her career on the title and escrow side of the business. She now serves as COO at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate and Real Estate Professionals in Oregon and Washington, overseeing all aspects of operations. What's the secret to creating a great work environment? There is no secret about it, Tammy recommends getting out of your corporate office and in front of your people. Treat everyone with respect and make a point of listening to your staff.  Positively impacting people's lives in any way possible. Make everyone you interact with feel important and a part of the goal.  Have an authentic desire to serve and surround yourself with people who share the same philosophies. Spend the majority of your time in the field with your staff.  What has been a life-changing event for the leaders? Reneé remembers early in her career when she was 22 years old and was given a chance by her leaders to oversee mortgage operations. This changed her career and gave her an opportunity to prove herself.  The great recession had a massive impact on Melanie because she had employees looking to her for answers. She was able to lead during adversity and also reinvent the way her organization ran.  20 years ago Tammy found herself in a boardroom with 10 men signing papers to become a full partner. At this time there were not a lot of women in executive leadership. This experience motivated her to prove herself every single day.  What is the biggest risk they have taken?  Tammy says she takes risks every day and that if you want to be successful in your field, you need to be willing to take risks.  Reneé's biggest risk is the same experience she shared as her life-changing event… and jumping out of an airplane.  Melanie's biggest risk was pivoting her career into a new path.  What advice would you give to your younger self? Don't let anybody else define you and learn to draw boundaries.  When a problem surfaces, address it immediately. Learn to make difficult decisions and act.  Choose to do something you are passionate about and commit to it. It won't always be easy but it will be worth it.  You can do anything that you want to do as long as you work hard and continue to move forward.  How have you overcome bias? Tammy says that a powerful man is admired and a powerful woman walks a fine line. As a young woman trying to start an organization, Reneé faced lots of discrimination. Her advice is to earn people's respect by going above and beyond.  Melanie has overcome bias by blocking out the noise and putting in the extra effort.  The leaders' favorite quotes “Unless you puke, die, or faint - keep going” “It always seems impossible until it's done” “Never chase the money. Chase authentic accomplishment.” “It doesn't matter who gets the credit. You need to let go of your ego, ego is overdressed insecurity” Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by featuring three powerful and successful Latinas in the real estate industry. These inspiring women share their thoughts, experience, and insights working in a professional environment and how their culture, values, and upbringing paved the way for their success. Meet the Empowering Latinas: Rosamaria Acuna, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Monica La Crue, Affordable Lending Manager at Freddie Mac Angelica Silveyra, Director, Customer Service at NV Energy How they get started in their businesses: Monica began by accident, becoming an assistant in the real estate industry and progressing to her current career at Freddie Mac helping agents and mortgage professionals make relationships with their clients. Rosamaria left to earn her degree, and she's thankful her family's strong bond allowed her to pursue an education and own a home by her early twenties. Angelica became a summer intern at NV Energy and eventually applied for a job in customer service at the same company. The program paid for her education, and she's remained at the company ever since. Growing up in immigrant families:  Angelica's family was extremely close-knit, and her parents taught her the value and importance of hard work to get where she wanted to be. Rosamaria is the second-youngest in her generation of kids in her family. Hard work and caring for others are integral to her and her family's morals. Today, Rosamaria instills those values in her two daughters.  Growing up with two languages and cultures made navigating school challenging. However, the love and support of her friends and family helped her overcome.  She couldn't advocate for herself then, which is why she is so passionate about advocating for others now. Monica grew up in a single-parent household, with her dad raising all four children. However, because he was in the Marines, she was raised by her family in a collaborative and loving atmosphere. Advocating for mentorship: Monica used to see her age and experience as limiting factors. Having mentors who encourage you to push past boundaries to meet new expectations is helpful and promotes professional growth.  Real estate can be a second career for many people looking to put in as much as they're willing to. After realizing there's a gap in knowledge of real estate agents, Monica loves that Freddie Mac educates and informs agents to help them do their best work. Advice to younger self? If there's anything you want to accomplish, the worst that can happen is that you're told no. Always find the positives. Apply for jobs and careers and opportunities you're interested in. Even if you check half the requirements, apply. Don't apply just because you aren't the “perfect” candidate. Surround yourself with role models because we rise and grow by lifting those around us.  Book recommendation: Brene Brown's The Gift of Imperfection Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. What is a trailblazer? An extraordinary person who sets new paths and paves futures for generations to come. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three trailblazers in the real estate industry. These women have expanded the realm of real estate to make the industry a more diverse, professional, and welcoming space for everyone.  Meet the trailblazers: Tiffany Curry - Owner and CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Tiffany Curry & Co., REALTORS® Erica Courtney - CEO, 2020vet, Inc. Desirée Patno - CEO, Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem, Chairwoman of NAWRB's Diversity Inclusion & Leadership Council How the trailblazers got their start in real estate: Tiffany did not intend to be in real estate, planning to enter corporate law. However, when a classmate said she was getting her real estate license, Tiffany decided to get hers as well and never looked back. Erica was bored in college and enlisted in the army. But after the birth of her two kids, she needed more flexibility to spend time with them, so she left and started her own company. Desirée gave up her initial career when she realized real estate was a space she could grow so much more. She now consults, influences, and shapes other people's real estate journeys to build more sustainable lives and futures.  Leading others in a pandemic (and post-pandemic) world: An effective leader does what is best for the team. As a broker-owner, Tiffany makes decisions for her company based on how it affects her agents. Leads should listen and use what they hear to inspire productive action.  It's not about perfection; it's moving forward, trying our best, and knowing our people to understand their problems and help address them.  The importance of staying positive online: So much content online and on the news is negative. Taking just five minutes to engage in a positive or productive action online can establish a powerful brand that builds your reputation.  Balance personal and professional content on your platforms. After all, it's not companies following your content; it's the humans behind them. Overcoming challenges as women: It's about acting with integrity and authenticity. Leadership is about being ourselves but being willing to adapt based on the people we lead. Women need to treat other women how they want to be treated. While we want to be on an equal playing field, we often aren't sure how to conduct ourselves on that equal playing field. Women still need to respect other women and evaluate our mentality in how we treat other women. Find and purchase the Women Housing Ecosystem Report (WHER) at nawrb.com/womenhousingecosystem. The real estate industry is full of opportunities and growth to make personal and professional achievements, whether as an agent or broker. However, it's even more attainable when you have great examples to follow. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three dynamic leaders who lead and inspire change in themselves and their communities with strength, compassion, and grit. Meet the Owners: Chris Farkas, Broker/Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Bayside Realty Tiffany McLemore, Broker/Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices McLemore & Co., Realty Gretchen Pearson, President and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Drysdale Properties How ‘the Owners' got started in real estate:  A second-grade school teacher, Tiffany got her license to supplement her income during the summer. However, she developed a passion for it and went full-time. Chris invested in real estate before the market collapsed in 2007. She had an investor network full of people asking her to help sell homes, and she found a way to use that to fuel success. Gretchen was a 22-year-old college graduate working for a San Fransisco company when she decided to get her license. She intended to be a part-time agent to buy investment properties, but she fell in love and stayed with the industry. The advice they wish they'd gotten:  The only relationship that matters is the relationship you have with yourself. Imposter syndrome is a genuine and prevalent feeling in the industry, but understand that the sky is the limit and don't compare yourself to others.  Discover your strengths early on. When you do something that doesn't play to your strengths, you might not like it. So, learn to delegate and focus on what you're good at. Let yourself off the hook and believe in yourself; don't be afraid to dream big. Significant risks and personal sacrifice: Gretchen and Tiffany started businesses shortly before the 2007 market crash, but their perseverance and dedication helped them work through it.  Chris opened a major franchise with a man who decided he didn't want to be married to her anymore, and she had to determine if it was the right call for her future. As an owner, understand that you're on-call 24/7. The entire family should be on board with your leadership and expect you to make personal sacrifices.  Mentorship and the importance of others in their careers: Gretchen - Her very first broker at Century21 had the drive and dedication to bring out Gretchen's best and develop relationships with those around her. Chris took classes from Excellence Northwest (now Excellence Seminars International),  which offered courses on personal accountability and growth that helped her learn more about herself and cultivate leadership skills. Tiffany's mentor taught and pushed her beyond complacency, and he encouraged others to be their authentic selves. Real Estate Icons | Maggie Verani, Connie Yoshimura & Beth Wolff - 014

If there's one thing consistent about the real estate industry, it's constantly changing. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three powerful women in the real estate industry whose decades' worth of combined experience and knowledge have made them icons in the field.  Who are the icons? Margherita (Maggie) Verani, CEO and Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty Beth Wolff - CEO and Founder of Beth Wolff REALTORS® Connie Yoshimura - Broker and Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alaska Realty  How the icons began their real estate careers:  Disenfranchised by the social security industry, Maggie began to work part-time as a receptionist for her father's real estate business. She moved her way up the ranks and now runs the operation.  Beth entered real estate for flexibility and income potential; she liked that nobody could tell her how to spend her time and money. With a writing background, Connie's goal was to sell enough real estate so she could pursue poetry. She liked that real estate is a creative process, and there is no glass ceiling if you work hard enough.  How has the industry evolved since the icons started? Beth originally finished real estate deals with a one-page contract. However, now the concluding process is far more thorough. Maggie has noticed a shift in informational availability. Realtors no longer control the availability of information, thanks in part to technological changes. Connie noticed that the industry has changed from a broker-centric to an agent-centric model, which calls for a larger scope of diversity and representation.    Obstacles to overcome: The only obstacle that's always present is change. Women have worked to overcome gender bias, but there is still more that needs to be done.  Gender prejudice within the banking industry affects who can borrow money for housing, and the corresponding social implications also affect women in traditional business positions.  Women in business need emotional intelligence to know who is happy, who isn't, and who needs help when in the office. Women have to be better than men just to get to the same place.  The Icons' advice to women fulfilling multiple roles: There is little you can do to control what happens to your home. However, you have complete control over how you react to what happens. Get on the treadmill and exercise. You'll be shocked just how much better you feel about yourself and the world. Get rid of the guilt. You're trying to do many things, so don't feel bad if you can't do every little thing that each role requires. When starting your real estate investments, start small and take little bites. You might make a lot of money, but you might lose a lot of money. So don't finance everything to pay for it. Advice to women in their positions concerning challenges: Younger women don't understand where they came from. Know how far we've come and continue to push gender boundaries. Education is essential, whether that's learning by experience or just through a more formal process.  Women should be able to succeed just as quickly as men. Unfortunately, the upcoming generation is somewhat complacent because they aren't aware of where women were just a few decades ago. Keep pushing and be determined to succeed. Commercial Real Estate Leaders | Lottie Michael and Kim Matney - 013

Real estate is much more than selling residential homes. However, women make up just 37% of commercial realtors. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host Teresa Palacios Smith is joined by two incredible women in the commercial real estate market to learn how they compete and thrive in this male-dominated market. Meet Today's Real Estate Professionals: Lottie Michael, CCIM, Senior Vice President, Commercial Division, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alaska Realty Kim Matney, Commercial Sales, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Commercial Division Ambassador Real Estate, Omaha, NE How did these professionals get their start in real estate? Dottie is a first-generation US citizen, and she's been in Alaska most of her life. She got into real estate because she needed money quickly, and she's always loved sales. She began her career in residential real estate, but her clients wanted to build an investment portfolio, so she took classes through NAR and joined commercial real estate to help them. Kim's been in the business for ten years, and she got her start in 2006 when she bought a duplex in Omaha and decided to get her real estate license.  When the recession hit, she got her license and moved full-time into real estate in 2016.  The commercial industry differs from residential: Commercial real estate is a broad category that can be refined. Whether that's industrial, medical, investment, or another, each industry carries its own challenges. Interest rates and the threat of recession are large-scale issues affecting many commercial real estate areas. But overall, the post-pandemic mentality has led many to ramp up commercial spaces, even if employees are likely to work from home. Three tips to other realtors watching: Be the first one in the office and the last one out. You won't make it if you aren't prepared to put in the hours. Show up prepared. Do research, have questions, and understand what needs to happen next to reach an agreement.  Work diligently to deliver your service, and be respectful to everyone around you. What's your superpower? Lottie knows the market and who are the movers and shakers, and it helps her make quick progress in her work.  Kim's background in business consulting and talent acquisition helps her speak in front of anyone. Researching her market thoroughly allows her to present professionally in front of others. Advice to people looking to get into real estate: Do your research, know what you're talking about, and go for it.  When Lottie is working with Alaska-based companies, the CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Manager) tells them that she is qualified and experienced in the industry. Look for similar certification opportunities, whether commercial or residential, to show that you are educated and understand your craft. The importance of mentorship: Kim knew she wanted to practice commercial real estate before getting her license, so she discussed the industry nuances with many professionals throughout her career.  Lottie enjoys mentoring other professionals entering the real estate industry, especially those looking to gain traction in the commercial space. The Motivators | Kalani Hooker, Amye von Seebach, Esq., Brenda Wild - 012

Having the support and guidance of educated and passionate real estate professionals can be the difference-maker in finding your own success in the industry. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three powerful women in the real estate industry who motivate and empower their team members to find success and accomplish their career goals. Meet the Motivators: Kalani Hooker, Broker Owner, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices A Action REALTORS® Amye von Seebach, Esq., President, Canopy Title Brenda Wild, Broker Owner, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Signature Properties How ‘The Motivators' got their start in real estate: Brenda's contractor convinced her to get a real estate license, and she left her sales position to become a realtor. Her goal was to foster and support a healthy work environment to make it a better and more sustainable career for everyone.  Amye's legal work led her to a job involving property law. She called her real estate law professor for help, and they arranged the necessary paperwork to help a client prove she owned the property in question. Amye found a passion for helping people who could not help themselves. Kalani worked in corporate America prior to her real estate experience. Working in information security, she transitioned to real estate to make a difference.  Each ‘Motivator' was inspired to become a broker-owner: Brenda had a gut feeling that she should be a part of a franchise. She jumped in right when the market started to tank, and she knows her success was thanks to her family's support when she needed to persevere.  Growing up in rural Kentucky, Amye went to college in South Carolina, studied Literature, and married way too young. After coming out as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, she married her (now) wife. Amye wanted to show other realtors that there are many agents in their community who are able to support and guide them.  Within Kalani's own family, she has family members who weren't able to achieve homeownership until Kalani was able to help them overcome that barrier. She wanted to continue that work to help others beyond her family accomplish that.  Facing biases and how they overcome them: When Amye was a team lead (for a different company), one of her employees refused to work for her because she was a lesbian. While her CEO supported Amye and fired the employee, that woman still works in the industry, and there are times Amye encounters her. When Kalani recruits people, and they realize she represents a minority-owned brokerage, there is hesitancy. She presents the firm as an inclusive workplace, and she was surprised when a particular man wanted to work in a male-dominated firm.  For Brenda, brokerage ownership in her area is still a boy's club. Blazing a trail for women in leadership is difficult. However, when she helps others, especially women-owned businesses, find and obtain land space is incredibly meaningful. The importance of mentorship: Kalani has many mentors: a religious mentor to help her focus on helping others, business mentors who bring knowledge, wisdom, and experience to the table, and her mother. She believes in giving back and always strives to have people look forward and look back. Brenda spends a great deal of time mentoring newer agents in her brokerage. She looks for younger women who she knows can provide meaningful business and life advice.  Amye's first and most influential mentor was her mother, but within the industry, Amye was mentored by Jim Harris. She also learns a lot from her kids - they catch her on every mistake she makes and keeps her accountable. Their biggest accomplishment: Kalani gives back. From a corporate perspective, BHHS supports Sunshine Kids, which is fantastic. However, there are also many local nonprofits and community needs that we should find a way to help. Brenda doesn't think she's reached her most significant accomplishment yet, but her biggest so far is creating a family, especially her blended family. Amye can't imagine anything more important than her kids. Of course, her other work is important, and she wants to change the industry to be more inclusive and representative of its people. Latina Top Producers | Agustina De La Cruz, Grace Patalano, Jennifer Price - 011

Real estate is about equal opportunity, helping everyone unlock the door to generational wealth and long-term success. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host Teresa Palacios Smith is joined by some of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices top Latina producers to discuss their experiences, obstacles, and advice for real estate agents. Meet the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Top Latina Producers: Agustina De La Cruz, Realtor, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Laffey International Grace Patalano, Associate Real Estate Broker, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices River Towns Real Estate Jennifer Price, Global Real Estate Advisor, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty How did these top producers get their start in real estate? Grace earned her license in 2002. While she had begun a career in corporate travel, Grace wanted the opportunity to strike a better balance between her professional and personal pursuits.  Jennifer initially worked as a director of international sales in the hospitality industry before moving into publication. However, after her office closed, she looked into real estate. She took a chance, got her license, and never looked back. Agustina used to own a health food bar, but she realized she couldn't spend as much time with her kids as she wanted. So, she decided to sell the business and try real estate, which quickly became a passion.   Hispanic and Latino heritage is a key component of their identity: Born and raised in Ecuador, Jennifer is proud of her heritage. Her mother is her role model and instilled in her the value of believing in herself. Agustina's mother brought her and her four siblings to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic for a better life. Working long hours in a factory to help fund Agustina's journey through college, her mother is the reason Agustina was able to find the success she now has. Grace's parents worked in diplomacy, so Grace lived in many places throughout her youth. She first came to the U.S. when she was four, and after being bullied for her accent, Grace worked hard to speak without it. (Which she now regrets.)  Advice and mistakes from these top producers: Grace found a mentor once she joined the industry, and that mentor played a key part in shaping her experience. Every realtor needs a network of leaders to talk to, because the industry is a collaborative one.  Agustina learned to never assume anything about the client. Instead, communicate and clarify everything to make the process work without mistakes.  In Jennifer's corporate work, she learned to answer, acknowledge, and make the speaker feel important. When she interacts with anyone, she keeps an upbeat and happy attitude to show the other person they matter and are respected. There are unique differences when working with Latino or Hispanic clients: Latinos need to know that their realtor cares about them before they trust the realtor with their goals. Once they feel like they're in the inner circle of connections, they'll have a higher degree of trust. Latinos love to hear about their culture and country. They're proud of their heritage and love discussing it with other people. They want to support other Latinos. As a Latina woman in real estate, Agustina found an inherent loyalty with her Latina clients because they shared a common heritage.  The importance of mentorship:  Agustina took a class from Joe Meyer and eventually developed a mentor relationship with him that allowed her to progress and learn quickly.  Grace's husband worked for Lehman Brothers, and they had training sessions that he would sneak her into. She signed up for a training program with Darryl Davis, and his program influenced her throughout her career.  A week after Jennifer got her license, she reached out to the top producer from Berkshire Hathaway in Miami and talked with her. She got advice, applied it, and studied as much as possible.  Real estate takeaways all agents should implement:  Be a marketing agent, not a listing agent. If you do the proper marketing for a house, it will sell. Realtors need to focus less on their ‘database' and more on the client base. Most real estate business comes from your sphere of influence, so put yourself in a position to obtain as much of it as possible.  Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. These powerful women, dubbed “The Transformers” because of their dedication to promoting a safe and healthy world for everyone, have made real estate more accessible for people from all walks of life. Meet The Transformers: Michelle Isabell, Associate Broker at ReeceNichols Real Estate Belinda Hernandez, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties and Co-Chair of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Forever Pride Network Lori Pace, Realtor with Kentwood Real Estate and inclusion consulting strategist Engaging agents in leadership: Michelle started a group specifically for LGBTQ people and allies within her company to teach realtors how to support and aid clients in the LGBTQ community.   Belinda helps mold the Forever Pride Network, putting on events that help allies best support their LGBTQ clients. In addition, Belinda wants people to use her as a resource to launch panels and discussions, so everyone is informed and confident when working with the LGBTQ community. Through real estate, Lori learned about the history and defining elements of real estate, which heavily contributed to her sense of self in the industry. Defining ‘allyship' and what it means: Specifically for real estate, many implicit biases might arise during a transaction, and those biases often work against those in the LGBTQ community. Michelle wants to help people learn, grow, and better communicate with LGBTQ people.  As allies, there is a guide that provides a lot of information to ask an agent to ensure they aren't violating fair housing and are putting the client's needs first. Leadership is about overcoming adversity: When Michelle told her boss there were not many LGBTQ initiatives in the organization, she offered to spearhead those efforts. As a black woman, Lori used to code-switch to overcome racial biases others might have. As an immigrant, Loi removed her accent and tried limiting mannerisms that might correlate her to her black heritage. However, the murder of George Floyd made her realize that there are situations that still take place in the world and in her community that have a direct impact on her life.  Lori feels her leadership growing through her ability to spread her story, offering a space for women of color to embrace their multiculturalism. It's not just a passion - it's who she is. Message for young people who want to follow their path: Belinda says to be unapologetically you. As women, we're taught to play it small and quiet. You'll encounter challenges along the way, but you'll be happier with yourself and more authentic to the people around you. Michelle believes you should never setter. You can make a change, whether in pursuit of your personal or professional goals. Lori encourages listeners to find collaboration. Making a difference in the market doesn't always have to be through real estate. Sometimes, all it takes is genuine efforts to improve those in your community. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host Teresa is joined by three powerful women who put in the effort to advocate on behalf of diversity initiatives for others both inside and outside the real estate industry. Meet the Advocates: Martha Mosier, President and General Counsel of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Kathleen Rebhan, CEO and Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Elite Properties Gretchen Rosenberg, President and CEO of Kentwood Real Estate Having a passion for your community: Working for a luxury brand, Gretchen believes that “luxury” means treating everyone as vital, and the client's definition is often something else. She thinks it is essential to give back by building housing for the situationally homeless. Martha's agents had a passion for DEI, so they created an impact council. One of the initiatives they started was a first-time homebuyer fair that helps marginalized communities understand the path to homeownership. It's challenging for people to fill the requirements to meet government-sponsored programming. Women should join organizations to find a network of women who can help them understand what they need to do to reach their desired path. Leadership for women in real estate: The path for women in leadership is more available than ever. However, there are still glass ceilings we need to be mindful of when determining our actions. To be successful in real estate, you must have passion. Of course, you'll fail while juggling multiple obligations. However, you just need to pick them up and move on. Question your motives. If you want to enter leadership purely for the salary, you'll encounter many problems and challenges you might not be ready for.  Be patient. Set out the intention of being a managing broker at an office, network, work hard, and the opportunity will come. The importance of mentorship: Great mentors are the reason successful people become successful. When you have a support network, you can do and overcome more.  Once you arrive at a certain place in your career, take the elevator back down to bring more people up.  As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure other women are afforded the same opportunities we were given.  Overcoming biases in the professional world: When you get started in business, there's a youth bias, but put in the work and be patient, and you'll overcome it. There's a gender bias in almost every position, and how you approach that matters. You can either reeducate their biases or determine it isn't worth your time.  Instead of becoming angry by the bias you encounter, use that to fuel and motivate you to prove them wrong. What advice would the advocates give to women today? Don't judge yourself based on what society said you should be. Instead, be prepared to work hard because success isn't handed to you. Have a passion for what you do. Many people go into things for money, but they quickly burn out. Do something you have a passion for, and economic success will come. Don't follow the monetary world, and don't throw yourself into a career at the expense of what matters - your family and friends. Instead, spend time with those you love. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, Teresa brings three women crucial to the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion to discuss how they help make building generational wealth through real estate an equal opportunity for everyone. Introducing today's guests: Ann King, President of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Network Realty Judie Parks, Principal Broker, Co-Owner, and Relocation Director of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Partners Realty and Parks & Weisberg Realtors Teresa Williamson, President of Roberts Brothers Inc. How they got their start in real estate: A computer engineer by degree, Judie never considered entering real estate. However, her friends and family encouraged her to move into the industry. Teresa had worked on family projects when real estate piqued her interest. She initially wanted to be on the appraisal side but instead decided to be a realtor. Ann joined on accident, initially working in fashion merchandising. However, when her husband's career took them to Florida, she started real estate. Celebrating diversity and fair housing: These women stress the importance of avoiding bias in real estate. If you've fallen into biased thinking, some people will have more opportunities and resources than others. Ann's DEI committee works all year long, offering to help communities that need support, and it has a book club dedicated to educational materials. They also have social media campaigns informing realtors on how to support diverse audiences in their work. As the former president of TLAR (The Greater Lousiville Association of Realtors), Judie's main initiative was to raise awareness and educate agents on the problem of redlining. What would you tell others looking to follow your path in leadership? Ann leads with her heart and gut because people want to be a part of that energy. We can lay the path, but it's up to the individual to decide where they soar.  Teresa likes having the leverage and vision to drive her success and the success of others. The ability to lead develops over time, and that growth can be used to inspire others. Leaders have to be authentic; it isn't a popularity contest. The hardest part of leadership is doing the right thing, which usually isn't the most popular thing. Leading through mentorship: Teresa mentors many young adults as they try to make important life decisions.  Judie mentors more young women because she feels they're underserved from a young age. She works to empower these women and mentor them to acknowledge their power and potential. Maggi - If you have to ask the question “Is this legit?” it probably isn't.  Katie - Understand what you're doing and what you're putting out there about yourself, your life, and your finances. Find ways to protect yourself online. Patty - Make an effort to keep work and personal stuff separate. Keep your personal stuff out of a work email. Email platforms offer two-factor authentication that drastically reduces someone's capability to steal your information. Pivoting: Patty - She went to college and got a degree in sports medicine, worked in the field for a few years, and women in that field were not accepted. She left the job she had and went to a temp agency, and they were the ones who sent her to Wells Fargo in IT. Katie - One of her biggest risks was coming to HomeServices. She had worked at her prior team for over a decade and she ended up turning down the job she spent ten years working towards. It was one of the best decisions she ever made. She branched out, grew, and learned more about real estate and technology than she ever could've imagined. Maggi - She had been at CBS Home for a long time, and the pivot from a few hundred to over a thousand people to see the merge come to fruition was a risk. Familiarize yourself with new sales, new managers, new everything. It was worth the initial risk. Salesforce was big on mentorship, and Teresa wants to mentor more women. Were you ever mentored/what do you believe in mentorship? Patty - Back when she started in IT, she had the opportunity to be mentored by some senior IT women, which were few and far between. She loves that (pre-covid) Microsoft had a program that offered all these different experiences to expose high school women to the tech world and the fields. It was cool to see these women, answer their questions, and explain what they would've done differently. They'd ask for advice, and Patty would always say “don't be afraid to fail.” Fail stands for “First Attempt In Learning” and she continues to do that today. Katie - Mentoringship doesn't have to be a big, program-driven event. As leaders, it's being generous with your time and your experience with the people around you. Katie's had amazing opportunities to learn more from the people around her, even if they're in an informal setting, as long as she's open to those opportunities. Programs or thought processes in pursuing tech jobs: Patty - It's not a formal program, but because it has exploded, it was areas that have become completely specialized. There are multiple specialties people might not realize, so try out the different areas and see which specializations interest and inspire you. Don't lose sight of the personal relationships and communication skills you have. Katie - It's not just about the STEM skills, because those can be taught. Mastering communication and your ability to work with others will be incredibly impactful to your success.  Maggi - When she hires, she looks at customer service skills before IT experience. Bosses and hiring managers look for people who can communicate with others. What would you recommend? Maggi - Cybersecurity, it's a growing space that is necessary for almost any business. Katie - Data science is a big thing, especially with the growth of AI. Everything we do is online, which is communication and user experience - those “soft-skill” tech roles are a great opportunity for a lot of people. Overcoming Biases: Maggi - She started right out of college and looked young. So now that she's hiring people, they're often shocked that she's their boss. Nothing major. There have always been women in leadership roles and IT that she's kinda seen and felt influenced by.  Katie - When she started everyone called her kiddo. Coming from a male-dominated field, you have to find different ways to deal with people. That might mean adjusting her communication or style depending on who she was talking to. Know your stuff and be confident, because you're going to have to prove yourself to them. Patty - That situation happened, especially in sports medicine. As a student trainer, she worked and there were not a lot of women standing on the sidelines of sports events. But push through, know your stuff, and be confident to earn their respect. Latina Power | Deitra Catalano, Aniella Gonzalez and Doris Lopez - 006

Today is all about Latina Power! In this episode, our host Teresa Palacios Smith is joined by a panel of powerful Latina women in the real estate community. They discuss their upbringing, introduction to real estate, and how they've found their current success. Speakers are Deitra Catalano, executive administrator for Home Service of America, Aniella Gonzalez, VP and general counsel for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services EWM Realty and Florida Realty, and Doris Lopez, Broker-owner of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Real Time Realty and Real Property Management.  How did these women get started in real estate? Aniella practiced law for over 20 years. She had focused her efforts on real estate litigation, working with title companies throughout Florida. She stepped out of her practice to enter her current role, where she feels supported by the people around her. Deitra had a conversation with a friend in sales, which led to an interview and a career in sales. Through that relationship, she met Gino, and she started working for him. Doris got her real estate license to support her husband's goal to own a property management franchise. When the market crashed in 2008, they got into a brokerage. To this day, she enjoys teaching agents and helping them develop the skills they need. Discussing their roots: When the communist regime took over Cuba, Aniella's parents decided not to have children until they could leave the country. Because of their different visas, her parents were separated for 13 months. Her dad left behind three brothers and sisters. It was a difficult decision, but they knew the regime was not for them.  Doris's mom was a teacher in Mexico, and her dad was an engineer, but they decided to come to the United States to find a better life. While they had the opportunity to go to school, her parents agreed to be field workers, with her mom attending school at night. Doris grew up constantly migrating. She learned to be on the go, and it was a challenge. But her parents taught her to go for whatever she wanted and be unafraid of change. Deitra's grandma was born on an Apache reservation in Arizona. She was close with her and was fortunate to spend much time together. She played a massive role in Deitra embracing her culture through faith, music, food, and dance.  Facing and overcoming discrimination: Because Doris was constantly moving, she leaned on her interest in sports. Whenever she went to a new place, she was able to work through frustrations and show people her value through sports. Aniella's grandparents didn't speak English, so she was often their translator. But, for her, success was a given because her parents didn't make their sacrifices for mediocrity. What is the driving force in their lives? For Deitra, it's her family (and especially her son.) She's been a single mom since 2009, so her goal is to lead by example for him.  Aniella had many teachers and mentors throughout her life who've seen something in her that she never saw in herself. Ultimately, she looks up to her mom because of her sacrifices for Aniella to succeed.   Doris started her real estate career because she knew she'd eventually need to provide for her parents, and she wanted to be prepared.  The best decision they've made: Deitra's best decision was the conversation she had 19 years ago with the person who put her in contact with Gino. When Aniella was 18, she decided to go to college. Her all-women school gave her the sisters she wouldn't have otherwise as an only child. Doris's best decision was being a business owner. The flexibility of her work schedule meant she was always there to support her kids. Some parting advice: Doris - Be open, and don't put your ego before your clients. Ask questions and be honest if you need to consult someone else for the answer. Deitra - Do what makes you happy, and celebrate roles that offer continuous improvement.  Aniella - Don't undersell yourself because the men aren't doing it. This is your profession; make sure your clients and customers understand that. Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. Today's episode of Women Who Lead features three mega real estate titans, some of the most accomplished women in the real estate brokerage industry. Today's guest's include Candace Adams, President and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services of New England Properties, Westchester Properties, and New York Properties; Mary Lee Blaylock, Chairperson of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services California Properties and Senior Vice President of HomeServices of America; and Joan Docktor, President of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Fox and Roach REALTORS® How did these powerful women get started in real estate? Joan - During a summer break of her teaching career, she got her real estate license and jumped right into real estate. She loved helping people find their dream homes, and she later got into management to support and help other agents. Candace - After a terrible personal realtor experience, she thought, “I can do this and enjoy it.” So, she jumped into the work. She loved the opportunity to build relationships and help people realize their dreams. She later built her first business based on women with children, building a prominent firm based on finding a balance in life. Mary Lee - Working numerous substitute teaching jobs, Mary Lee was subsidizing her rent by working as her building's office manager. However, when the building went into foreclosure, she had the experience of navigating that real estate process. Someone told her to get into real estate, and she quickly moved into management opportunities. Navigating the boardroom dynamic as women: The path these women have taken is challenging - they have to be strategic and intentional with their communication. There are differences between men and women, and the more we embrace those differences and use them to our advantage will lead to effective change. Women had to yell to be heard. Especially when breaking the glass ceiling, women in the boardroom have to overcome perceptions of weakness. Even today, women have to think ahead, be ready, and take advantage of the moment when it comes. Supporting other women in the business setting: Joan- In the past, women were used to reporting to male managers. It took some getting used to, and she had to prove herself. Powerhouse Latina | Patty Arvielo - 004

Today's episode of Women Who Lead features none other than powerhouse Latina Patty Arvielo. As an award-winning entrepreneur (and president and co-founder of New American Funding), Patty uses her forty years of experience in mortgage lending to create a blossoming business serving underserved communities.  When she started her career, Patty was surrounded by men. Now that she's in a leadership position, she makes sure other women, Latinas, and any minority know that they can climb the ladder of success. The love she has for her culture is deep. Patty grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood, and she liked that her family was different. The mortgage industry is still primarily led by white males, but Patty believes it is now time for young women to emulate what allowed her to find success. In the mortgage industry, you learn by trial and error.  The more we foster representation around the table, the more we'll see the rise of other minorities in the industry. Patty's passion for minority advancement resulted in a university and mentorship program to help minorities create their own opportunities.  Her team trains roughly 100 students a month from different ethnic backgrounds, which doubles as a great recruiting tactic for her company to ensure she has a diverse group. She launched a mentorship program called ‘Thrive and Lead' to help Latinas identify what it took to lead to her success.  Over time, this program has blossomed into a multi-ethnic program that gives many minorities mentorship opportunities. Instead of being afraid of something, Patty tackles a situation head-on. To young people, Patty urges you to find ways to continue to evolve as a human being. While she feels very confident in herself now, she is always trying to be a better leader. Realize that change is difficult and it takes work. But, as a leader, it is necessary. Patty's podcast and book recommendations: There's a podcast for everyone. If you haven't found the one you like, just keep looking.  For Patty, she loves anything with Oprah, like her podcast Oprah's Super Soul.  While she doesn't read whole books, Patty flips through them. For example, she's currently reading “OMG WTF Does the Constitution Actually Say.” Patty's favorite quote? “Nobody's going to tap you on the shoulder to be successful.” For more content from Patty, connect with her on LinkedIn. It takes a powerful strategist to successfully run a real estate organization in a city as robust as New York City. Today's guest is Diane Ramirez, the Chief Strategy Officer for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England, New York & Westchester Properties. Tasked with growing the brand across the world's most iconic city, Diane is a master strategist, and in this episode, she shares her career story that explains how she got to this point. Diane's start in real estate: When her husband opened an investment firm branch in Florida, Diane joined him. Having already bought and sold a few houses, she quickly became a Florida real estate agent.  Diane loved the idea of working her own hours. But once her children went off to school, she decided to be an entrepreneur. Overcoming challenges in the New York real estate market: While the real estate market for the area has had to overcome several challenges, but it's back and poised to do great things. There are still obstacles ( both political and government), but it's moving in the right direction. Branding is essential, especially in New York City. Berkshire Hathaway needs instant recognition to accomplish its goals.  It takes leadership from the top down to implement strategic growth. How do you create lifelong clients, especially for new agents? It's all about building the relationship. Successful agents aren't just a realtor but an advisor. Someone who is there for the customer all the time, not just the transaction. If you're there to help and guide, the relationship will strengthen. In many areas, realtors might not need to perform an advisory role. However, in New York, it is a necessity (because everything requires approval.) The realtor should lead the client through these nuances, whether the transaction was one week or five years ago. Diane's approach to leadership: Diane focuses on being true to herself and being better than she was the day before. For inspiration, she looks to many things, from her staff and past mentors to the people she meets each day. But, it's not just anyone person; it's simply the atmosphere of New York that is an inspiration to her.  Overcoming biases and assumptions:  While Diane is Hispanic through marriage, she's carried her last name for quite a while. As a result, she's noticed an undertone of surprise when people see her because her appearance doesn't match their expectations. Diane has frequently been the only woman in a board room, but she's never felt held back by it because she knew she earned her place there. And when you project confidence, people will feel confident in you. Balancing work and personal life: Diane had to make decisions early in her career, and she knew the only way to succeed in her endeavors was to be what was needed at that moment. If she was helping with homework or at a school function with her kids, that was the focus, but if she was at the office, she was in business mode. And that's what made it work. Diane's advice to listeners? Be present in your life as best you can, and you'll find you won't have to sacrifice as much. One of Diane's favorite quotes is by the great Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failures are not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” To get in contact with Diane or to see other content from her, connect on LinkedIn. Today's episode of Women Who Lead features a special guest: Christy Budnick, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services! In this episode, Christy and host Teresa Palacios Smith discuss what qualities make a good leader, how realtors today can start building those qualities, and Christy's plans for the future of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. (Note: this episode is a prior recording with Christy; she's now been the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services CEO since May of 2021.) Christy didn't intend to join real estate. When she was 11, her mother decided to join the real estate industry, with Christy and her sister acting as her marketing department.  Christy knew one thing as she entered college - she never wanted to join the real estate industry. But in 2011, tired of the travel associated with her position running a sales and leadership training division, Christy joined her mother in real estate. And now, she loves everything about it. What are the qualities of a great leader? For Christy's style, it depends on the situation. She's more than willing to lead a charge. But, if she delegates something, she wants to support from behind while someone else leads. A good leader can lead with their heart and mind, and is willing to take risks. Leaders challenge their people to make mistakes (because that means they're pushed to grow.) Above all, leaders follow their gut.  Anyone can be a leader: Some people are raised in an environment where becoming a leader is more natural. You don't need money to be a good leader. Instead, great leaders come from a place where they had the support that encouraged them to accomplish their goals. However, you don't have to have that to be a leader. So while it makes it easier, it's not impossible without it. What are the greatest challenges brokers currently face? The greatest challenge is combating the noise in the marketplace because our job is to provide clarity. We need to believe we're here to stay. Our business model is built on relationships over transactions, and technology cannot replace that.  Real estate is a personal business that can't be duplicated through the internet. Christy's 30,60, and 90-day plans: She met with the HSF team, and their dedication and knowledge blew her away.  In her first thirty days, she wants to ask a lot of questions and learn to lead in a way that best supports the company. The first sixty days are all about planning for the future, establishing the goals and outcomes she wants to achieve. Her ninety-day plan will focus on implementing specific tactics to reach those goals. Overcoming biases and assumptions:  Christy has been fortunate to work with people who, while primarily men, promoted the best person for the job. Christy didn't have biases against her (that she was aware of), but one assumption she fought was the belief that she came from money. In reality, everything she had as a child came from her mother's work ethic. Christy's Book Recommendations: Educated Anything by John Gordon (like Row the Boat.) Christy's final takeaway? Always find a way to help others in their journey. You'll make an impact bigger than yourself while fueling your personal growth. Remember, always bring women up the ladder with you as you climb to the top. On our first episode of Women Who Lead, Teresa is joined by a true leader. Leslie Rouda Smith is the 2022 president of the National Association of Realtors, and she is the second member of her family to claim this title. As the leader of a force of 1.5 million real estate professionals across the country, Leslie knows what it takes to be a leader, and in today's episode, she shares some of that wisdom with us. Leslie was essentially born into real estate.  Leslie's mother was pregnant when her father started his real estate company. As the former president of NAR, her dad exemplified the leadership qualities she knew she wanted.  Leslie worked for her father's company throughout high school,  filling in wherever needed.  As of 2022, single women represented 19% of the first-time homebuyer population versus 11% of single men. That's crazy, considering women could not purchase a home without a male signature until 1974. Leslie plans to differentiate herself as the NAR president.  Of course, she wants to be inclusive and hear from her members. As the leader of the largest trade organization in the world and the largest unaffiliated PAC advocating on Captial Hill, everyone's voice is important. There is always something happening behind the scenes. She's currently dealing with a lawsuit from the Department of Justice, and the National Association of Realtors is doing everything they can. Things that happen in our favor don't just happen; theres' a whole team working to promote our interests. What are some moments that were scary that she's glad she did? Her journey is not what she had planned. (But who's is?) Her father, being the ‘91 president, meant Leslie went to every NAR convention growing up. However, she wasn't allowed to serve on a NAR committee at all.  So it wasn't until 13 years later she got the opportunity to be on a committee from a president of NAR from California. Later, she served as a liaison for the first African American president of NAR in 2009. She had no idea what that meant when she first accepted the job. In 2009 he offered her a new opportunity, which later led to her joining as a vice president. She learned you could learn to say no if there is too much on your plate. Who is a mentor you looked up to in your career? Ebby Holiday was a mentor. She was the National President of the Women's council but wasn't allowed to be president of NAR because she was a woman. She was a wonderful lady who lifted women up and paved the way for women in the industry. What other challenges do you face, particularly finding a work/life balance? Working first in the women's council helped Leslie because she received support from women of all ages who helped her overcome her fear of public speaking. It's all in your head. You have to have the confidence to overcome challenges. One of her three pillars is strength. Not just in numbers, but also mind and body. She wants to be healthy as she leads hoping her constituents do the same. In the 115 year history of the National Association of Realtors, this is the first time the leadership team is majority female. Your circle should want to see you win and clap the loudest when you have good news. If they don't, find a new circle of friends. Follow Leslie on LinkedIn, and take some time to go to the National Association of Realtor's website to view your membership benefits. Some quick background of Teresa: With a family from Colombia, Teresa interviews each top leader with a cup of coffee in hand. Because that cup of coffee is how her family breaks bread and shares time together. As the Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Home Services of America, a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate Teresa represents 75,000 agents and 64 employees across the country. She loves her role and her opportunity to engage with female leaders. It's by seeing women in powerful positions that encourages other women to follow suit. One of Teresa's greatest inspiration? Wonder Woman. As a young girl, Teresa's mother suffered from a heart condition that ultimately led to her death.  While in the hospital with her, Teresa picked up a magazine with Linda Carter on the cover. Carter, who starred as Wonder Woman, was a Latina like her.  Reading about her and the obstacles she overcame inspired her to help Teresa through tough times. When women support each other, incredible things happen. Teresa wants to inspire women to pursue opportunities and leadership positions, whether inside or outside the real estate industry.  Beginning Feb. 16th, episodes of Women Who Lead will air twice each month.
