Hakki Akendiz, an immigrant who became a successful entrepreneur and lauded philanthropist, is living the American Dream. He also for years experienced the plight of living without housing. His business, Champion Pizza, gives a voice to both. Akendiz arrived in the U.S. from Turkey over 20 years ago. He had no illusions about a gilded path, but didn't anticipate the challenges that befell him. Akendiz slept on park benches and lived in shelters and restaurant basements, worked menial jobs and was even robbed of his life's savings. And, yet he persevered, opening his first pizzeria in 2009 and gradually added nine more, each built with reinvested earnings.   Amid a worsening homelessness epidemic, Akendiz has prioritized giving back as a pillar of Champion Pizza's business model. Every week over the past eight years, Akendiz and his team have set up on West 34th Street in Manhattan where they share pizza and other food, clothing and medication to homeless people. In total, Champion Pizza has donated millions of dollars worth of pizza, but Akendiz intends to give more. In this episode, Akendiz spoke about his remarkable journey, why he credits hard work to his success and downplays the impact of luck, why supporting a social mission starts with building a sustainable and profitable business and how business owners can most effectively support the homeless community. She says that her fear of disappointing people was bigger than her fear of dying or public speaking. She now realizes that it's a bit of a self-absorbed point of view because we have no control over what other people think of us. Now she knows it's better to live as her best self and have the right people appreciate and show up for her versus trying to be something that she thinks they think they want her to be. As the mom to small kids, there is some element of putting others in front of yourself, but Teresa realized that something was out of whack. Like the day she showed up to her first neighborhood association meeting and was drafted to be treasurer, despite her protestations that she was no good with numbers. But she didn't want to disappoint these people (who she didn't even know!) so she took on the role - and she hated it and had to force herself to do it. Even friends and work colleagues would give her feedback on her people pleasing tendencies. At the same time as she was giving presentations on win-win networking, she was not allowing others to help her. One person was very pointed with Teresa and told her that the relationship didn't feel reciprocal and, if she valued authenticity and meaningful connections then receiving is part of relationship building as much as helping others is. That was a lesson that took her a long time to fully absorb. On the home front, Teresa thought things were going ok, but she was going to marriage counseling by herself, and doing the counseling homework by herself, and realizing that things at home weren't feeling particularly reciprocal. Teresa got divorced at 45 and then had a midlife crisis as she prepared to turn 50. She felt burned out and had a bad attitude about her upcoming birthday. Ina Pinckney is the Breakfast Queen! INA was the Chef/Owner of INA'S, an American Food restaurant and a pioneer in the West Loop Market District, that closed at the end of 2013.   She is a frequent and welcomed guest on radio, local news and cable TV, has done interviews on shows in the U.S., Canada and Germany and appeared in a national Quaker Oats commercial as herself – the Breakfast Queen. Articles about her have appeared in local, national and international newspapers and magazines, as well as trade and in-flight magazines.  Her recipes have been syndicated globally and featured in many cookbooks. Ina has been a guest lecturer on Entrepreneurship at Northwestern University,  DePaul University and the University of Illinois, and has been the keynote speaker at food conferences and culinary school graduations. She also speaks about breakfast trends for food companies. In 2014, Ina was awarded the Golden Whisk Award from the Women Chefs and Restaurateurs Organization for excellence in the kitchen, lead a coalition of Chicago Restaurateurs and Chefs to support Chicago's smoking ban and co-founded the Green Chicago Restaurant Coalition for restaurants in Chicago with Dan Rosenthal for which they received Chicago Magazine's 2011 Green Award.   She was named 2008 SBA Woman in Business Champion and in 2020 received the Jean Banchet Culinary Achievement Award. In 2013 she published INA'S KITCHEN: Memories and Recipes from the Breakfast Queen so that her recipes would live in everyone's home. Besides writing a monthly column for the Chicago Tribune called BREAKFAST WITH INA, a documentary about the closing of INA'S screened in 48 film festivals around the country. Despite the awards and acclaim she has garnered in her career, the most significant title she holds is Polio Survivor.  Ina now speaks to Rotary groups about the late effects of polio in her effort to help Rotary and the Gates Foundation achieve their goal of the global eradication of polio.

Every year the Salt Lake Chamber honors legislators who support a pro-economy and pro-business agenda with the “Business Champion” award. These are legislators who have voted at least 80% of the time with the Chamber's priority votes. This last legislative session we had 22 priority votes and 79 legislators who voted for those priority votes 80% of the time. Among that group is Senator Ann Millner, who on top of being named one of our Business Champions, has also been named the Salt Lake Chamber's Legislator of the Year. In today's Building Utah podcast we sit down with Senator Millner to discuss some of the legislation she and the Chamber collaborated on to further some education initiatives and address our state's workforce needs.

Ros Altmann is an expert on later life issues – particularly pensions and retirement policy, investment, savings, annuities and social care funding. She is an economist by training and worked in fund management in the City for many years. She has advised Governments, regulators, industry bodies, corporates, finance firms, trustees and consumer groups and was Director-General of over 50s’ specialist Saga Group from 2010 to 2013. Ros was recently appointed a CBE for services to pensioners and pension provision and is the UK Government’s Business Champion for Older Workers. She is a frequent media commentator on pension issues and regularly writes articles and speaks at conferences on pension reform. She has won numerous industry awards and honours including Pensions Personality of the Year (twice), Industry Guru of the Year, Women in Public Life Award, The Times ‘Business Bigshot’ and was one of the UKs top 50 Most Influential People in Pensions in 2013 according to Pensions Insight. She is well-known as an independent voice who understands both customer and provider viewpoints. Ros has a first class honours degree in Economics from University College London, a Ph.D. degree in Economics from London School of Economics and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard.   Sharon Scott is the founder and CEO of The Marvin & Juanita Smith Learning Centers of Excellence, Inc.(MJSLCE). In 2008 we began implementing educational programs, and providing real-life answers to middle and high school students, motivating them to reduce teen promiscuity, pregnancy, STIs and HIV/AIDS while empowering them to achieve academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. 1,222 students have participated in our classes at Westside High School and KIPP Houston High School. Our classes are co-ed. We have been named the SBA-Houston District's 2012 Home-based Business Champion. Building our future leaders through education is our business. Affecting positive attitude and behavioral changes among our teens is our business. We have developed and use a curriculum that helps students understand their personal self-worth, their value to the community and our Nation. Our students, while grasping the importance of completing their education without the burden of teen parenthood and sexually transmitted infections, are shown the need for positive academic and personal achievements.
