Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
How can technology, in this case mobile technology help people in hard-to-reach places and can it ever make our world fairer? These are two questions our Social Impact Pioneer this week grapples with daily. In this episode of the Business Fights Poverty podcast series – Social Impact Pioneers, we sit down with Max Cuvellier Giacomelli, Head of Mobile for Development at the GSMA, the global industry body uniting over 750 mobile operators and 400 tech companies. Max leads one of the most impactful teams in the world—Mobile for Development (M4D)—which has reached over 220 million people in low- and middle-income countries through mobile innovation. Max shares how the GSMA's initiatives drive digital inclusion, financial empowerment, climate resilience, and gender equality, particularly through its Connected Women campaign and mobile money ecosystems. He unpacks how mobile connectivity is closing the mobile gender gap, with targeted programs helping over 80 million women access mobile internet and financial services, and how GSMA-supported startups like Crop2Cash are using AI to empower African farmers. We also explore the usage gap—the 3.1 billion people who live within network coverage but remain offline—and what's being done to tackle digital barriers. Max highlights the GSMA's push for commercially sustainable innovation, its AI Innovation Fund, and why ‘dumb AI' built for real-world conditions in Africa may hold the key to inclusive tech. Whether you're passionate about tech for good, sustainable development, startup ecosystems, or bridging the digital divide, this conversation is packed with insights on how to scale impact through smart, inclusive partnerships between the private and public sectors. Tune in to hear how GSMA is helping build a more equitable digital future—and why the road to socio-economic transformation runs through mobile. Outsourcing podcast Get the full show notes for this outsourcing podcast here: outsourceaccelerator.com/442 Gina Romero of Connected Women Gina Romero founded Connected Women to help disadvantaged Filipino women. She grew up in the UK with many Filipino immigrants and wanted to help. Connected Women first helped professional women in Singapore adopt technology by outsourcing work to freelancers in the Philippines. Clients asked them to find more freelancers, so they built a job-matching platform in the Philippines. They realized only skilled women were getting opportunities, so they focused on training women with less tech background. They trained over 1000 women in AI data annotation. With support, these women produced high-quality work. References: W: Connected Women LI: Gina Romero Start Outsourcing Outsource Accelerator can help you transform your business with outsourcing. Rob is joined in this episode by the original WAG, Lizzie Cundy! They talk all about media, networking and the highs and lows of being in the public eye. Lizzie also delves deep into her thoughts on the ‘Wagatha Christie' debacle, the Depp –vs- Heard case and why she thinks the Harry and Megan interview was disrespectful and wrong. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being a WAG was aspirational and attainable, this is why WAG's sold papers. They became stars in their own right and people wanted to know all about their lives. Lizzie believes the change she has seen in the past 30 years in media has been largely a positive thing by allowing more opportunities for more people. However, Lizzie is very against the current ‘woke' culture and what she calls the fun police. Lizzie believes in freedom of speech and doesn't think this should be restricted just because some people may take offence. You still need an agent in the world of media. To protect yourself and to stop yourself being used. Lizzie found offering people help and becoming a known face is what helped her build her network, mostly because it aided her in building trust with people. If you aren't naturally outgoing, you can still be very connected but you must take your chances and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Always ask the question you shouldn't ask. This is what people want to know and get out of listening to interviews. The press aren't ‘scum' in Lizzie's eyes. The majority are just trying to earn a living, it's simply a job for them. Celebrities need the press as much as the press need celebrities. There's always a way to make what you want to happen, happen. This is one of Lizzies's mantra's and why she is so well connected in the world. Lizzie's mechanism for dealing with criticism and hate is her sense of humour. She knows she is a good person and has good self-esteem so this alongside enjoying life helps her stay strong against any adversity. For aspiring female entrepreneurs, Lizzie's advice is to believe in yourself and to show no fear, you are as good if not better than everyone else. BEST MOMENTS “I think in this, businesses you can be too sensitive” “I think probably I'm a bit of a laugh, I don't take it too seriously” “Talk to them, so what if their security says no, take your time. You have one chance” “Be more bold in the interviews” “Just because you're offended that doesn't make you right” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://robmoore.com/podbooks rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator.
