To kick off Valentine's Day, Darin sits down with Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections to chat about her lifelong dedication to giving the perfect gift. She reminisces on the early days of the business and shares the details on her new headquarters located in beautiful Glendale. In the second half of the show, we feature a live in-studio performance by Diane Birch, whose 2016 album is the self-produced Nous. Written and recorded mostly in Berlin, Nous draws on musical influences as varied and rich as Birch's own international upbringing—from her childhood as a preacher's daughter in Zimbabwe and South Africa, to her wedding dress and black-lipstick days as a Goth teen in Portland, to her late teens in L.A. where she paid her musical dues playing piano and singing covers in fancy hotels.Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. It features 77 of the world's top chefs who share personal stories of how music has been an important, integral force in their lives. The chefs also give personal recipes and curated playlists too. Cole WIlliams of the Greater New Orleans Citizen's Relief Team talks with host Max Rameau about liberating homes owned by the city of New Orleans, renovating them, and moving in unhoused people.Described as having “the heart of Bob Marley, soul of Sam Cooke and grit of Etta James”, New Orleans-based Cole Williams and The Cole Williams Band (CWB) has rooted their sound in the tradition of Gil Scott-Heron, creating songs that reflect the everyday experiences and hopes of Black people all around the world. Their new album, “Give Power to the People'' are anthems of the Movement for Black Lives and certainly for people struggling to make sense out of this dangerous and hopeful moment.Over the course of her career, Cole has provided vocals and percussion for Joey Bada$$, Chiddy Bang, Beats By The Pound, Aloe Blacc, Little Jackie, Diane Birch, Somi, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Kaissa, Dana Fuchs, Pimps Of Joytime, Holy Warriors (Harold Brown, Bill Summers, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes), and commercial/tv recordings for CoverGirl, JCPenney, Suave, Smash, and Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami. CWBs' live performance highlights include The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, French Quarter Festival, Blue Note NYC and opened for India Arie, Emily King, Ozomatli, The Wild Magnolias, Corey Henry and Treme Funktet, and Lauryn Hill.Following frequent street demonstrations at New Orleans' City Hall, Williams and The Greater New Orleans Citizens Relief Team organized and succeeded in getting the City to provide emergency housing in empty hotels in August 2020, and now they are renovating City-owned blighted houses with the presently unhoused people that will live in them. “We are calling all creatives to action. Now is the time for musicians, artists, dancers, rappers, poets, actors and actresses to unite and design a culture where we share our gifts, skills, talents and resources with the least of ours, specifically in the unhoused community, to create a world where wealth is shared equally, and white supremacy cannot survive” The bedrock of The Cole Williams Band's new album and community organizing follows the course civil rights veteran, Ella Baker, taught that created a successful and historic freedom movement. “Give Power To The People”, articulates the core of their organizing: go to the poorest people, create a shared plan for advancement, raise the spirits and awareness of our people, gain broad support and make it happen. “We believe the practice of humanity is the blueprint for freedom and equality”.See more of the work of host Max Rameau at pacapower.org. A random fall ride this week through the downed leaves, featuring seasonal songs from Diane Birch and Daryl Hall (so, yeah, Hall &... Birch), Neil Young and Edgar Nemit... I mean WINTER. Yeah, Edgar Winter. Give it a try, you'll.. FALL in love with this show!
We're still in social distancing mode here in Chickentown, of course, as we cross one cancelled event after another off the stupid calendar. (Specifically, Pee Wee Herman and Diane Birch are keeping their distance from us this week.) But that means more TV talk (Lost in Space, Shrill, Picard, Taskmaster, and the upcoming cartoon Solar Opposites) and even more online concerts (Taylor Dayne is telling it to our hearts, straight from her living room). Also, National Handmade Day is this week, and is NOT cancelled, so Kornflake is gonna macrame like it's 1979. And in our Chickens in the News segment, we discuss new fossil evidence of a giant prehistoric chicken that dressed like Lynda Carter and killed all the dinosaurs. (Disclaimer: We just kind of skimmed the article.)

“Everything we do, every decision we make, leads us to where we are today.” For Universal Music Group recording artist Shayna Leigh, music tells the story of this journey.Growing up in Orlando, Shayna originally found music through the dramatic arts. Commercial work as a child actor led to musical theatre, where she first discovered singing. She found it to be the most instinctual form of expression she'd ever experienced, and she was hooked. Her continued evolution found her influenced not only by contemporary hitmakers, but also ageless greats like The Beatles, Carole King, and Laura Nyro. She spent years writing, recording and performing, all in search of the sound that best defined her own artistry. On July 28, 2015, Shayna released her debut album “Drive” on S-Curve Records/UMG. The album includes ten tracks produced and co-written by Multi Platinum & Multi Grammy Award Winning Record Producer Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, Diane Birch), and Emmy Award Winning, Multi-Platinum Songwriter and Producer Peter Zizzo (Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton).“Drive” represents both a musical and emotional milestone for Shayna Leigh. The record is distinguished by its blend of organic roots and pop touches, the songs mixing acoustic and electronic elements to convey timeless emotions in “classic contemporary” musical landscapes. This alchemy showcases an interesting dichotomy at work in some of the material – sad songs in upbeat settings, and vice versa. Yet while the instrumentation is certainly a driving force behind her songs, it's her vocal style that truly defines them.Indeed, Shayna's voice is uniquely her own, but her stories belong to us all. She believes in the universality of the human heart, and she wants her music to reflect that. To Shayna, the greatest power of songs lies in their ability to remind us how truly connected we are.As co-writer of her record, Shayna loved bringing her input – her life, really – to the table, to see what it sparked into motion. The ensuing creative mingling of hearts and minds is what made the collaboration behind this album so deeply inspiring to her.Prior to the release of “Drive,” Shayna released two EPs: “The Cold Hard Truth and the Dream”, exclusively through Noisetrade. She also released “Hey Shayna Leigh” in September 2014, which soared to #2 on Amazon's Singer/Songwriter chart, #3 on their Hottest New Release chart and #118 on iTunes Pop Album chart. Recognized for her undeniable talent, Billboard Magazine featured Shayna as one of “Tomorrow's Hits”. Following the continued success of her music, Shayna has played shows all over the US, as well as the UK, and has opened for popular acts like Howie Day and Sister Hazel. When not in the recording studio, Shayna enjoys acting, dancing, and traveling, but her truest “extra curricular” passion is reserved for her family and friends – the “co-dreamers” who march beside her in supportive spirit towards her greatest aspirations. Her own commitment to promoting self-love extends beyond music, to organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, for whom she recently performed at a NYC fundraising event.Shayna holds an increasingly strong conviction that professional and personal growth go hand in hand. “There is a strength that comes from putting yourself out there and standing up for who you are, scary as it seems sometimes,” Shayna says. “We all have a story to share and mine is woven into my music.”Shayna Leigh currently resides in New York.
This week's National Whatever Day reminds Kevin of yet another story from junior high school (and this might be the dumbest one yet); Kornflake makes a startling discovery about the Facts of Life cast (which is the only kind of discovery that interests us); our latest concert reports feature Eddie From Ohio, Diane Birch, and a crazy coincidence; they said it couldn't be done, but we come up with several reasons to visit Hudson, Wisconsin; and our "Chickens in the News" segment stars a giant angry chicken-themed dinosaur from sixty-six million years ago. By the way, now we desperately want a giant angry chicken-themed dinosaur, to set loose here in Chickentown. We're pretty sure that would solve (or at least distract us from) all our problems.
As the music industry struggles to find its footing, singer/songwriter Diane Birch gracefully manages to music she can feel proud of and earn a living. Her debut album BIBLE BELT led to appearances on every major late night comedy show, from Jimmy Kimmel Live! to The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Her song Valentino appeared in the Blockbuster Valentine's Day and she toured as an opening act for Nick Jonas, of the boy band The Jonas Brothers. The popularity of her first album secured her entree into the music industry, and the quality of her lyrics and vocal range gave her street cred with music legends like Steve Wonder, who had her open for her, as well as Prince, and Daryl Oates. Homer Steinweiss, the drummer for Sharon Jones and the DapKings and a music producer, took note and collaborated with Birch on her second album, SPEAK A LITTLE LOUDER. Birch took greater risks with her second album and it paid off with critical acclaim from The New York Times and Boston...
