I am reaching back to 2019 for this podcast. In case you missed it, you may want to hear this story as Jordan Vineyard and Winery is one of Sonoma County's most stunning wineries, fashioned after a French chateau. It stands boldly yet gracefully among the sweeping lawn, beautifully manicured trees, and vineyards. Since the first vintage in 1976, Jordan wine has lived up to the elegance of the Chateau in which it is produced. Needless to say, it was a pleasure to spend time there interviewing CEO, General Manager, and family member John Jordan and winemaker Rob Davis. For you Napa wine history fans, you'll love the stories Rob shares about "the Dean of California Winemakers," André Tchelistcheff. As you listen, you'll understand the reasoning behind Wine Enthusiast Magazine choosing Jordan Vineyard and Winery as American Winery of the Year in 2014. On The Wine Road Podcast is supported by Sonoma Clean Power. Music was sourced from FirstCom/Universal Music and Marscott.
Every year, Wine Enthusiast releases a new edition of the vintage chart, a tool that's long been critical to collectors. Vintage charts help pinpoint bottles peaking in quality—and those that may be past their prime. The most recent version debuted in the Winter Issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. But in a time when climate chaos—unprecedented periods of drought, heat waves, floods, fire and more—is rampant, how should one read a vintage chart? And can we still trust them? In this episode of the Wine Enthusiast Podcast, we've tapped Writer-at-Large Christina Pickard for her thoughts. Pickard reviews wines from Australia, New Zealand, England and New York for our publication and has for years been one of the many voices helping craft the vintage chart. For more than a year now, Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Michael Alberty has been tracking a story about the Oregon Health Authority and some questionable PSAs it ran at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. At that time, the spots—running widely in Oregon—seemed at the very least heavy-handed and ponderous. At the worst, they indicated a growing influence of out-of-state lobbying groups bent on shaping Oregon's health policy. At that time, another "Dry January" period, we talked about how that particular social media trend had its roots in temperance organizations in Europe and the United Kingdom with much more radical agendas than new year/new you. One of them, Movendi International, traces its beginnings back to the 1800s in America and played a key role in instituting Prohibition (the first one). Alberty's full story, titled "The Neo-Prohibitionists Are Coming," appears in the upcoming Winter Issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Here, we delve into some of the details of his investigation. It's a fascinating lens into the discussion of alcohol and health (and politics) into sharp focus, especially not long after U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy issued an advisory on a potential link between alcohol and cancer. Is there a guest you want us to interview? A topic you want us to cover? We want to hear from you! Megan Bartholomay, our Froggy Wine Specialist from Republic National Distributing is back with another episode of Wine Wednesday. Follow Megan @fargos.winest This week's wine: Willamette Valley Vineyards Bernau Block Pinot Noir 2016 Winemaker Notes Ruby in color, concentrated aromas of bramble fruit, mint, cedar and graphite emerge and lead to a silky palate featuring jammy notes of blackberry and cherry cobbler accented by dried herbs and minerality flavors. The firm, rustic tannins and lively acidity frame the ample palate and the finish extends far beyond the sip. A combination of determination and extraordinary people has brought Willamette Valley Vineyards from a bold idea to one of the region's leading wineries, earning the title "One of America's Great Pinot Noir Producers," from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The “budwood” of Willamette Valley Vineyards began long before its founding in 1983 by vintner Jim Bernau. His Dad was hired by a California winemaker to secure the first winery license in Oregon since Prohibition. Jim's Dad allowed him small tastes of Richard Sommer's wine, lighting a path that led Jim from home winemaking to studies at UC Davis and eventually Beaune, France. In 1983, Jim cleared away an old pioneer plum orchard in the Salem Hills and hand-watered his first plantings using 17 lengths of 75' garden hose. Jim's vision of organizing the support of wine enthusiasts to build a winery that would produce world-class wines through shared ownership has resulted in more than 16,000 owners. The winery's Common (WVVI) and Preferred (WVVIP) are traded on the NASDAQ. The winery sources all of its barrel-aged Pinot Noir from its estate vineyards and practices environmentally sustainable farming. All of the vineyards have been certified sustainable through LIVE (Low Impact Viticulture and Enology) and Salmon-Safe programs since 1997. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Episode 1360 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Matthew Kaner. More About today's guest: Fermented grape juice has allowed me to have a voice within an industry full of characters and strong personalities. I quite enjoy how things smell and taste. In fact, as a kid I wouldn't eat anything until I smelled it first. Now a 14+ year veteran of the wine world, my humble wine career began at the Wine Cask Wine Store in Santa Barbara, California where I also grew up. Moving to Los Angeles in 2006 brought an opportunity to work at Silverlake Wine, where I worked my way up from holiday help to the manager. In 2009, my close friend Dustin Lancaster came to him with an idea…”I want to open a wine bar and I'll only do it if you'll do it with me.” The only acceptable response: “you tell me when and where.” In July of 2010, Los Feliz's Bar Covell opened with a new spin on wine…ditch the traditional wine list and use your words. Bar Covell has a program of over 150 wines by the glass and the staff instead start a conversation/interaction with each guest to gage what they are in the mood for at that moment. This was just the beginning... I was graciously was named one of the Sommeliers of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine in 2013. In early 2015 with Lancaster and new partner David Gibbs, the trio opened Augustine Wine Bar in Sherman Oaks. Augustine has been named Best Wine Bar in American by Food & Wine Magazine and gets critical acclaim for its Vintage Collection of wines that it makes available by the glass and by the bottle on their in-house chalk boards nightly. In August of 2019 Wine Enthusiast Magazine named me to the 40 Under 40 Tastemakers list for 2019! “We've come a long way since our opening in 2000,” says Bill Wilson, founder and co-owner of Wilson Creek Winery. “And, while much has changed here at the winery and in the valley, our focus, our mission is exactly the same as when we first started.” That focus has paid off with Wilson Creek Wines winning prestigious awards. Wilson Creek's Petite Sarah won “Best Red in the Valley,” at the annual Temecula Valley Winegrowers' Association Awards. Wilson Creek is one of only a few wineries in Southern California to receive a 90-plus ratings for its wines from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Fairly new to Wilson Creek, our Library room offers a guided sit down wine tasting of these library wines that are not offered to the general public. Wilson Creek prides itself on offering a multi-dimensional wine experience. We welcome those new to wine and take them through a wine journey as they develop and expand their palate. We also focus on wine education. Wilson Creek is the only winery in the Temecula Valley that offers training to guests in all aspects of wine making through our Wine Academies. Our Winemaker and Vineyard Manager are professors at two area colleges. Wilson Creek Winery has also been active in the community since its inception. The winery has won Temecula Valley's “Business of the Year” four times. The winery is involved with numerous charitable events each year raising thousands of dollars for charities One thing that won't change at Wilson Creek it the commitment to family. Almost the entire Wilson family has been involved with the winery since the beginning. On any given day, you will find Matriarch Rosie Wilson with her dog perusing the grounds, or any number of Wilsons at work behind the scenes. “We started the business as a family project, and everyone pitched in from day one,” says Wilson. “Through the years it has become a tradition to treat our guests as our extended family and make family a big part of the Wilson Creek experience.” Like the fine wines it serves, Wilson Creek Winery keeps getting better with age.

He has been a participant in A Greater Applegate's Food and Farming planning sessions with the goal of creating tool- and knowledge-sharing networks between producers in Josephine and Jackson Counties. Garett loves the walkability of Jacksonville. He also loves to walk to open mic night - and play drums occasionally! Garett loves working at the intersection of food, farming, and community development. He has never lived in a place that so seamlessly supports the collaboration between farmers, chefs, winemakers, herbalists, artists, and consumers. He's especially enjoyed partnering with Chef Carl Krause of Earnest Baking Co. You'll find Troon produce - and next year, lamb! - on the menu of his food truck. This year, Troon celebrated their 50th anniversary. As of next spring, all 50 acres of vines will have been replanted with grapes borne in the Rhone Valley (France) and Cotes-du-Rhone, where the climate is very similar to that of the Kubli Bench. The Applegate Valley is the PERFECT context to grow wine grapes. A few months ago, Troon was honored as a "Top American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and the Rogue Valley was nominated as "Emerging Wine Region of the Year". This has brought a lot of buzz to our community of winegrowers and makers that are not as well-known as the Willamette, but doing really interesting things. He was an instructor at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont for two years at the time when that school was rated the number one culinary school in the country. Sother moved to the front of the house for a friend when he moved to New York, though, and never went back.Sother's background in the culinary arts has informed his bar and cocktail expertise in certain ways. He points out that people would not eat the same food every day, but will try things at different restaurants. Yet they insist on having the same drink over and over. Sother's attention to cocktail and drink crafting goes hand in hand with trying new things, finding a drink to match your mood, and finding a drink that meets your evening experience. Many of the bars owned by Overthrow have very specific themes and drink menus to curate very considered experiences. Monroy Wines is the passion project of two wine enthusiasts – winemaker Adolfo Hernandez, and his wife, Nohelia. Both grew up around wine, albeit in distinctly different backgrounds, but with the same reverence and respect for the efforts involved in every bottle.Adolfo was named by Wine Enthusiast Magazine “as one of the Latinx experts changing the face of American wine.” A pianist and a biochemist with a love of great food, he was naturally drawn to winemaking's ageless combination of art and science. A career in luxury winemaking has given him the combined experiences to offer distinctive wines of his own composition.

In this show we welcome back Édouard Miailhe, proprietor of Château Siran in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc (he was on Episode 391, as part of our Médoc series, discussing his role as the president of the Margaux appellation and a small bit about the Château). He joins to talk about many things that we didn't cover in the first show, and the exciting things happening now, including the fact that Château Siran's 2018 vintage was named the #1 wine of 2021 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine! Édouard Miailhe, owner of Château Siran, photo by Wine For Normal People After meeting Édouard in person, tasting the wines, and seeing what is happening at Siran, I agree that magazine made the right decision. Siran has some of the most vibrant energy in Bordeaux and some of the best wines. And Édouard is really just getting started. Château Siran In addition to this, the show covers something we did not at all address in the first show: the role of the Miailhe family as discussed in the book “Wine and War” by Donald and Petie Kladstrup. The book was written two decades ago but is still a fantastic read. In our first conversation, Édouard never mentioned that his family's bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to wine and the essence of being a Frenchman during the war makes them some of the bravest, most empathetic, clever, and principled families in the wine world. Here are some of the things we discuss in the show: Édouard chronicles his family history in the Médoc, and how they came to manage Château Siran through family ties in 1888, with wine broker Fréderic Miailhe. We talk about how his great grandfather Édouard Miailhe and great uncle, Louis Miailhe, saved many prestigious Left Bank properties from bankruptcy and ruin -Pichon Lalande, Coufran, Dauzac, and part of Château Palmer in the early 1900s through investments that others were unwilling to make. Château Siran I make Édouard discuss his family story in World War II. We discuss weinführers, the invasive and destructive nature of the German troops in Bordeaux, and how his family saved the lives of two Italian Jewish families by sheltering them at Château Palmer, until they were able to get papers to smuggle them out of the country. We discuss how the continued acts of patriotism through investment and saving French wine properties in Bordeaux led to the signed picture of Winston Churchill that is at Château Siran. Édouard discusses his aunt, May-Eliane Miailhe de Lencquesaing, who played a role in helping keep the Jewish family alive, became an icon in Bordeaux wine, and later moved to South Africa and started her own brand. Édouard and I discuss his view on women in wine and his family's unflagging support of women through the decades. Marjolaine Defrance, Édouard Miailhe, Charlotte (hospitality manager) Édouard talks about how the right investments in the vineyard and winery, and the right enologist (a very young, talented, Marjolaine Defrance) led to Château Siran being the number one wine in the world according to Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Siran's 160th anniversary bottle Édouard talks about the revival of original art on the labels of Château Siran. His parents began the tradition of picking a theme for the label that reflected the events of that particular year. The bottles were pieces of art, but also were easily recognizable because of the moment in time they represented. Édouard has revived the tradition for the 2020 vintage, with Frederica Matta, the French and Chilean artist representing the difficult year of isolation in Covid, but the uplifting part of reconnecting with nature, and being grateful for its sights and smells. Revival of the artist label with the 2020 vintage. Art by Frederica Matta, photo courtesy of Ch. Siran We end by discussing some of Édouard's worries about climate change but also about his hopefulness about the ever-improving quality of Margaux wines and how the appellation seems to be working together better than ever before, a great thing for them and for those of us who drink their wines. My opinion: Château Siran is a very unique and delicious bottle of wine and extremely well-priced for what it delivers. The addition of Petit Verdot in the wine makes it unlike other wines you may have tasted and it is well worth it to buy it, hold it and taste the beauty in the bottle!! _______________________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on every type of wine in a variety of price points. Josh McDaniels is the CEO and Director of Winemaking at Bledsoe Wine Estates. He was born and raised in Walla Walla, where he fell in love with the wine industry at an early age. Josh started his own winery during high school and pursued this passion by obtaining formal education from the Institute of Enology and Viticulture. He also took extension courses through Washington State University and UC Davis and interned in Argentina at Paul Hobbs' Vina Cobos Winery to further his education. Josh has been named a "Game Changer of Washington Wine," a "Washington Prodigy," and a "Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers of America" from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. In this episode with Josh McDaniels Creating one wine brand from scratch and growing it takes a lot of time, effort, and money. But running multiple brands across different locations is so much tougher. So, how do you successfully build and manage multiple wine brands? According to Josh McDaniels, the key is to leverage synergies and economies of scale. At Bledsoe Wine Estates, only one core team handles all three brands. One of the main benefits of this setup is having a fixed set of people Josh and his partner can trust. There's an established trust, understanding, and synergy between different personalities — which helps the brands run smoothly. In this episode of the Legends Behind the Craft podcast, Drew Thomas Hendricks and Bianca Harmon sit down with Josh McDaniels, the CEO and Director of Winemaking at Bledsoe Wine Estates. Josh shares how he got started in the wine business as early as high school, how he met NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and how they ended up as business partners. He also talks about the process of creating three wine brands and the challenges of managing and growing them.

What makes someone a wine influencer? Why is there so much uproar in the wine industry about celebrity wines and influencers? How did heavy drinking become such an entrenched part of the wine industry? Do you sometimes feel you drink too much wine? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Devin Parr, Founder and Managing Partner of Devin Parr & Associates. You can find the wines we discussed at www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Highlights What makes someone a wine influencer? Why is there such frustration towards wine influencers from the traditional wine community? How can we bring a sense of inclusion to the wine community? What would Devin like to see from wine influencers? How can wine brands improve their relationships with influencers? Why is awareness such a critical part of marketing? Do we drink too much in the wine business? What's it like doing wine press tours? How did such a heavy drinking culture develop as “the way we do business”? What is Devin’s opinion on mommy wine memes? Key Takeaways I agree with Devin that an influencer is anyone who actually influences opinion on wine, not just those with official certifications. There’s a role for many voices, particularly in the wine industry. She makes such a great point: we don't drink wine in a vacuum. Wine is part of our broader lifestyle. I just wish more media trips would incorporate that … it’s why I stopped going on them altogether. And yes there have been times when I know I’ve consumed too much wine, though usually, this has been at home not at an industry event, thank goodness. But I think it’s something the wine industry needs to address more openly as do we all who love wine and want to keep it a part of our lives. About Devin Parr Devin Parr is the Founder and Managing Partner of Devin Parr & Associates, a PR, marketing and content agency for the beverage, travel, and tourism space. How did Cameron Diaz’s new clean wine brand cause an uproar in the wine world? Where does wine fit into the wellness world? Which low alcohol and alcohol-free wines are worth trying? Should wine labels have ingredient lists? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Devin Parr, Founder and Managing Partner of Devin Parr & Associates. You can find the wines we discussed at www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Highlights How did a wine sales call end with Devin being mistaken for an FBI agent? Why did an embarrassing conversation with a customer renew Devin’s interest in geography? Why should you be fearless when tasting and talking about wine? What incredible experiences did Devin have while studying wine in Italy? How did Bill Buford inspire Devin to move to Italy? What is clean wine? How did Cameron Diaz’s wine brand cause an uproar in the wine world? How has the wine industry unwittingly given marketers an advantage? Where does wine fit into the wellness world? Which low alcohol and alcohol-free wines are worth trying? Should wine labels have ingredient lists? Why is the traditional wine industry so resistant to non-expert consumer opinions? Key Takeaways I enjoyed Devin’s take on clean wine, and why Cameron Diaz’s new brand caused such an uproar in the wine world. I think a definition would help, but that’s probably difficult to do given how the definitions of organic and biodynamic wines differ so greatly. I think wine can fit with wellness and a blanched life, without becoming a gimmicky or misguided marketing tactic that positions it as some sort of health drink. I’m going to search for the low alcohol and alcohol-free wines that Devin thinks are worth trying. I think wines should be more transparent about ingredients, using a QR code on the label that can be scanned to more details on the winery’s website so that this can change from year to year and not become so burdensome on the winery with packaging changes every vintage. This episode features sommelier Femi Oyediran, co-owner of Graft Wine Shop in Charleston, South Carolina. We talk about his love of music almost as much as his love of wine in this episode because he says he likes to share the gift of a great glass over the sounds of a great album. We chat about how these two passions now collide within his approach to wine retail and lie at the core of the foundation upon which Graft is built. He discovered his passion for wine while working at the Charleston Grill under the encouragement and mentorship of the former Wine Director, Rick Rubel. We discuss the utility of his award-winning blind tasting skills and how he uses his tasting knowledge to help his customers discover new wines. Among several major accomplishments, he was awarded Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s 2018 ‘40 Under 40' and was selected as ‘Sommelier of the Year’ along with his co-owner, Miles White, by Food and Wine Magazine in 2019. And while he says he is so thankful for his success and opportunities, he also emphasizes that wine is part of culture and connection that should never blind anyone from the importance of being a good human, first and foremost. You can check out their retail shop at www.graftchs.com and follow @femingtonsteele and @graftchs on Instagram. Upon his retirement from the NFL in 2007, Drew Bledsoe "doubled back" to his hometown of Walla Walla, Washington to realize a long held dream. Drew and his Wife, Maura, purchased a piece of property on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley AVA and subsequently launched Doubleback as an estate focused winery with the goal of crafting America's best Cabernet Sauvignon in an elegant, true to varietal way. Drew had long been planning for this moment during his years playing football and success came immediately as the very first vintage earned a spot in Wine Spectator's Top 100 List. Drew hired Josh McDaniels, now CEO & Director of Winemaking, away from Figgins Family Wine Estates where he had trained for almost a decade under their longtime mentor and friend, Chris Figgins. Josh, also a Walla Walla native, has been named a "Washington Prodigy" and a "Game Changer of Washington Wine" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The collaboration between Drew and Josh is a competitive partnership that pushes them to continue the pursuit of perfection in Cabernet Sauvignon every day. Doubleback remains a small, family owned winery located on the southern edge of Walla Walla in its new home that was completed in 2018. The winery has four estate vineyards all located in the Walla Walla Valley and all unique to the other. Each vineyard is sustainably certified and farmed by its own incredible farming crew that is an integral part of the team. The team welcomes it's mailing list customers by appointment only daily. The Birdies & Bourbon team had a great time chatting with Marianne Eaves on the show. Marianne is Kentucky's First Female Master Distiller since Prohibition. Peyton Manning has also named her the quarterback for the Sweetens Cove Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey. On the show we were able to taste the first Sweetens Cove release with Marianne and discuss the process for making the release as well as notes and balance within the spirit. For more information on Marianne please visit her online at marianneeaves.com or on Instagram @mariannebmd Born in Tennessee and raised in Kentucky, geography alone may have been telling Marianne Eaves that her destiny was to be a whiskey maker. However, it was courage to buck tradition, her creative engineering mind and a voracious appetite for learning that actualized her place in history as Kentucky’s First Female Bourbon Master Distiller since Prohibition. After a fast and early failure in art consignment, Eaves decided to follow her long love of math and science and pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville. Little did she realize that she would find herself in a history-making position in which the creative and the scientific would come together. A fortuitous confluence of circumstances – her love of science, analytic mind, exceptional sensory skills, creativity, and a fateful internship choice with Brown-Forman – led to her being the first woman to earn the title of Master Distiller with Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort. Eaves has been recognized in Whiskey Advocate Magazine as “the Next Generation” for the bourbon industry, and has been honored by Forbes and included in the 2015 Food & Drink 30 under 30 list. As she stepped into the role of Master Distiller herself, taking on the herculean restoration project of Castle & Key Distillery, she was recognized by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as one of America’s Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers. Her combination of technical knowledge, hands-on experience, specialized palate and focus on thoughtful innovation are a unique formula for her role as Master Distiller. Praise for her recipes come from hobbyist consumers and spirits aficionados alike — her vodka and gin confuses and excites the palette with honest balance and nuanced complexity. The fortunate few who have tasted barrels that are resting at Castle & Key Distillery agree that the future is bright for Eaves and her creations. As she transitions into her new role as a consultant and ambassador for Kentucky’s finest spirit, Eaves is well poised as a leader of the new generation of spirits professionals that will shape the industry. She hopes to use her expertise in process and product development to raise the bar for craft producers and help other passionate makers turn dreams into a reality. She is excited to teach the ways of authentic Kentucky made Bourbon to producers across the US. Eaves role in changing the dynamic in this predominantly male industry is clear. She is proud to be a leader and a face for the movement and rise of women in spirits. Thank you for taking the time to watch the Birdies & Bourbon Show for all things PGA Tour, golf, gear, bourbon and mixology. Dan & Cal aim to bring you entertaining and informative episodes weekly. We're joined by Marianne Eaves to discuss her career in the whiskey world and her aspirations for the future. Marianne is currently the Master Blender behind Sweetens Cove Tennessee Bourbon. We were lucky enough to taste through Batch #1 with Marianne and learn her process behind selecting whiskey for blending and for single barrel selections. About Marianne Eaves: She's no stranger to the spirits industry or creating and growing one-of-a-kind premium spirits, Marianne will forever hold a place in history as Kentucky’s First Female Bourbon Master Distiller since Prohibition. She was recognized by Whisky Advocate Magazine as “the Next Generation” of the bourbon industry; honored by Forbes in their 30 under 30 list in 2015; named as one of America’ Top 40 under 40 Tastemakers by Wine Enthusiast Magazine; and, was identified as one of the top “Southern Women” by Garden & Gun Magazine in 2019. It is no wonder that she was recruited to serve as Master Blender of the first Sweetens Cove release. Sarah Pierre, an Atlanta native, has been the owner of 3 Parks Wine Shop in Atlanta's Glenwood Park neighborhood since 2013. She moved into the wine world from restaurants and brings her expertise in hospitality and service to her wine shop. Cheryl Stanley discusses the basics of wine tasting and ongoing trends in the wine industry. Specifically, Stanley defines the fundamental vocabulary used in describing wine, how to read a wine label, and how to start building a wine collection. She also details how restaurants construct wine lists and the nuances behind wine pricing, debunking the myth that the most expensive wines are not always the best. Stanley elaborates on trends shaping the beverage industry right now including the impact of cannabis on wine consumption and what the future holds for Pernod Ricard. And because the best way to learn about wine is to drink it, Stanley hosts a tasting and shares how to drink wine, starting with how to properly open a bottle (including a screwtop!) and finishing with the right way to sniff, slurp, and spit or swallow. Jordan is an ivy covered Icon. It's one of Sonoma County's most stunning wineries fashioned after a French Chateau. It stands boldly yet gracefully among the sweeping lawn, beautifully manicured trees, and recently planted cabernet sauvignon estate vineyard. Needless to say, it was a pleasure to spend a couple of hours there interviewing CEO & family member John Jordan and winemaker Rob Davis. He and I chatted for 90 minutes, way more than I could squeeze into my one hour radio show. Fortunately, a majority of the outtakes can be heard in this podcast. As you listen you'll understand the reasoning behind Wine Enthusiast Magazine choosing Jordan as American Winery of the Year in 2014. Since they produced their first vintage in 1976 their wine has lived up to the elegance of the chateau.

When and why do you decant wine?A: Yes IF: it's a young red wine that is from a moderate to warm climate that would benefit from air in order to soften the mouth feel If the wine in unfined and unfiltered, it could have sediment if the wine is old -- it depends on the type of grape: cabernet sauvignon, nebbiolo, merlot, some syrahs, etc. or a pinot that is old might throw sediment so you can decanter to remove the bitter chunks. If the wine is young and their reds do well with decanting for air, e.g. local Cornell University alumni vineyard: Turley Wines: http://www.turleywinecellars.com/ How to Serve Wine 101: Why and When to Decant https://www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show/id/how-to-serve-wine-decanting Why and When Do We Decant Wine https://vinepair.com/wine-101/wine-decanting-guide/ Length of Time to Decant, suggestions from Wine Folly: https://winefolly.com/tutorial/how-long-to-decant-wine/ Q: Can you bring your own bottle of wine to a restaurant and just pay the corkage fee? A: It depends. Some restaurants allow this, whereas it may not be legal to bring your own alcohol due to local, state, provincial or regional laws. It's always best to ask the restaurant the following questions: (1) Do they allow corkage (if you bring your own bottle)? And (2): Are there any restrictions to corkage? Some might restrict you from bringing a bottle on the restaurant's wine list. Often you can do this in a number of wine regions and areas, but it's always good to ask when in a new area. Ms. Theodora Lee, a partner and trial lawyer at Littler is the founder and owner of Theopolis Vineyards. Her passion for wine began upon her arrival to San Francisco from Texas in 1987, primarily due to the influence of her law firm mentors, many of whom owned vineyards. This led Ms. Lee to take several viticulture classes at UC Davis, before deciding to develop her own vineyard. In 2001, Ms. Lee purchased sheep land in the Yorkville Highlands of Anderson Valley, and began developing her vineyard. Finally, in 2003, Ms. Lee planted her vineyard, and adopted her Greek name, from pledging Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and established Theopolis Vineyards. In the wine world, Ms. Lee is known as Theo-patra, Queen of the Vineyards. Wine Critic Robert Parker bestowed upon wine made from grapes harvested from Theopolis Vineyards a stellar rating of 94-96 points, a spectacular showing for the vintner's first harvest in 2006. Emboldened by the great fruit produced by the land, Ms. Lee, a bold and dynamic Texan, decided to bottle her own wines in 2014. In addition to bottling the richly intense and flavorful Petite Sirah, Theopolis Vineyards strikes a lighter note by bottling a Symphony, a white wine grape, which is a crossing of Muscat and Grenache Gris. Ms. Lee also bottles the unique Rosé of Petite Sirah, an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, and a Yorkville Highland Pinot Noir. The Sunset Magazine International Wine Competition has consistently given the Estate Grown Theopolis Vineyards Petite Sirah stellar Gold Medals. The 2012 Theopolis Vineyards Estate Grown Petite Sirah won a stellar Gold Medal at the 2015 Competition, and the 2013 Theopolis Vineyards Estate Grown Petite Sirah won a stellar Gold Medals at the 2016 Competition. The 2016 San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition has bestowed on the 2014 Estate Grown Theopolis Vineyards Rosé of Petite Sirah a stellar Double Gold Medal. The 2013 Theopolis Vineyards Estate Grown Petite Sirah recently won a Double Gold Medal and 95 points at the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition, which is considered to be one of the most influential wine competitions in the world. The September 2016 Issue of Somm Journal listed the 2013 Theopolis Vineyards Estate Grown Petite Sirah as Best in Class, meaning it is considered the best Petite Sirah in the world. The other wines from Theopolis Vineyards including the 2014 Symphony and the 2014 Pinot Noir have won either silver and/or bronze medals at the San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition, the Sunset Magazine International Wine Competition or the San Francisco International Wine Competition. Wine Enthusiast Magazine has bestowed on wines from Theopolis Vineyards 90 plus Points, and those wines are featured in the March 2017 Issue of that magazine. In addition to practicing law and making wine, Ms. Lee serves as Co-Chair of the Board Development Committee for the Board of Directors of the YMCA of San Francisco and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Legal Aid. She is the Past President of Bay Area Black United Fund and the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and Past Vice President of the United Negro College Fund San Francisco Advisory Board. Ms. Lee is a graduate of Spelman College and the University Of Texas School Of Law. Prior to entering the practice of law, Ms. Lee worked as a Senate intern in Washington, D.C., for Senator Sam Nunn. A two-time SAVEUR Blog Award finalist, Fink launched his wine blog and began a career in retail wine in 2004. Fink has been a wine editor at Foodista, Grape Collective, and MSN.com. Written and recorded mostly in Berlin, Nous draws on musical influences as varied and rich as Birch’s own international upbringing—from her childhood as a preacher’s daughter in Zimbabwe and South Africa, to her wedding dress and black-lipstick days as a Goth teen in Portland, to her late teens in L.A. where she paid her musical dues playing piano and singing covers in fancy hotels.
On this episode, Dr.G is joined by Brian Roeder – a real estate developer now turned winery entrepreneur who dropped everything to follow his passion. Located In the scenic hills of Virginia wine country, he is the co-founder of Barrel Oak Winery – commonly referred to as BOW for its dog-friendly environment. If you are anything like me, in our heads, we all have a pre-conceived notion of what a winery experience is like. Brian has challenged every assumption of that experience by reinventing the model to be centered around his living room experience, and less about stiff traditions and rituals. In this episode, Brian shares with us both the ups and downs of his rollercoaster ride in pursuit of his dream, how he reimagined the winery experience using a hospitality model centered around community and conversation, and key lessons he learned along the way that has helped him shaped his career. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. Visit www.thatsunusualpodcast.com About Brian Roeder Brian Roeder is a real estate developer turned winery entrepreneur who dropped everything in 2006 to co-found Barrel Oak Winery in the scenic hills of Virginia Wine Country. Barrel Oak, commonly referred to as BOW for its dog-friendly environment, uses a hospitality model that centers around a ‘living room’ experience and seeks to create conversation and community. Voted Most Family Friendly Winery by Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2012, Barrel Oak re imagines the winery experience, bucking tradition and challenging assumptions regarding what it means to visit a winery. Key Interview Takeaways Progress often requires that we challenge social norms. BOW’s success has much to do with its disruptive business model which embraces family and encourages customer interaction, rather than replicating the traditional chateau experience. Despite pushback from the industry, Roeder stands behind this innovative model that empowers its patrons with “great wine and a great experience.” Avoid self-definition. Extraordinary things happen when you let go of self-imposed restrictions of what you can and cannot do. By continually revisiting the purpose of the business, Roeder realized that BOW was not just a winery, but a hospitality brand. This allowed for the expansion of Barrel Oak to include a brewery. Consider the ‘third space’ concept. After home and work comes the ‘third space,’ a place where you choose to be. The atmosphere at BOW allows for its customers to initiate conversation and create a community. Listen to your customers! Rather than asking its patrons to fit into conventional wine culture, Barrel Oak welcomes kids and pets, and Roeder’s team added the brewery in response to customer feedback. You can learn a lot about yourself when your back is against the wall. Faced with a small group of wealthy influentials who maintained a zero growth position for the community and passed an ordinance that would have put BOW out of business, Roeder learned what he was capable of. In danger of losing everything, he sued the county and discovered both positive and negative aspects of that relentless fighting spirit. Adopt a sense of deep gratitude and humility. When you have reached a certain level of success and people appreciate what you have created, it’s time to give back to the community. Roeder works with a local Chamber of Commerce to help other small and startup businesses. “Words have meaning and meanings have consequences, so words have consequences.” Connect with Brian Roeder Website Email: brian@barreloak.com Phone (703)798-8308 References Aaron Sorkin’s Commencement Address To subscribe to the podcast, please use the links below Click Here to Subscribe via iTunes Click here to Subscribe via Stitcher (Android users) If you like the show, please consider leaving the show a review in iTunes or Stitcher.
