Pete and Trevor saw Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag, but they aren't really allowed to talk about it, and each of them is suspicious that the other may be compromised and working for another podcast. Things get weird. They also returned to their ongoing project to watch every Aardman film. This week they discussed Peter Lord's Pirates! movie, and Aardman's short films from 1996-2008, including A Matter of Loaf and Death. Tune in next week for Shaun the Sheep and Early Man. Pete and Trevor saw two of the greatest horror sci-fi movies ever made. We did a double-header of David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) and John Carpenter's The Thing (1982). It's Jeff Goldblum versus Kurt Russell, Brundlefly versus The Thing from Another World, in an epic showdown of body horror, special effects, and possibly the best use of makeup ever. Listen in for our immediate reaction to these two classics. This is also week three of our ongoing project to watch every Aardman feature and short film. This week we are talking ‘Chicken Run', Aardman's first feature, directed by Nick Park and Peter Lord. We encourage everyone to watch along with us and check in each episode for our dedicated Aardman segment. Go to https://boxd.it/BQYVu for the watchlist. I hope that everyone has read the cover story of the latest issue of our diocesan magazine Catholic Times. It has to do with a person who was addicted to pornography, and this person is very, very forthright in describing the things which go on in the minds and in the feelings of all of us. And we realize that this is one example of the way in which people chase after various objects which we think will provide us with contentment and turn out to be anything but.    We have read from the Book of Joshua near the end of that book.  Joshua was the immediate successor of Moses. Now the people are in the long promised land of their own. And Joshua questions the people about their intentions.  He asks whether they will continue to serve the one true God, the Lord. They say, "We will." We know, however, that many, many people did forget about the Lord, and we can understand why. The Israelites were surrounded by neighboring peoples who had various gods and these gods had images, and there were people who were convinced that their various gods took care of things like the weather and fertility and the growth of crops. And they said, "You should pray to this god." And many people did so.    It is hard for the Israelites and for us to remain fixed on the one true God who cannot be captured in any image. And so we struggle, and at times we find ourselves caught up in worship, you could say, of objects which are far from God. We think about our primary commitments, our marriages, and we have heard a teaching of St. Paul in Ephesians about how marriage is intended to be a reflection of the love that Jesus has for his bride,  the Church. There is a lot of context to be aware of as we come to understand the meaning of these words. And I would say statistically, when it comes to matters of abuse in marriages, statistically it's more often the men abusing the women rather than the other way around. But it is possible to apply it both ways. There are multitudes of men who do not know anything from the Bible except "Wives, be subordinate to your husband." And that's where they stop, and that's what they think the wife should respond to in the sense of, yes, you have to be totally my servant. Well, it is not correct. The context is very clear. Husbands are to love their wives as Jesus has loved the church, sacrificing himself completely. So we need to be clear about that because if a spouse is merely an object, you are not treating the spouse or yourself with dignity.    And finally, we come to the end of our five Sundays of reading from John chapter six about the bread of life. And it is disappointing to hear of all the people who abandon Jesus. It is encouraging, however, to hear the faith-filled words of Peter: "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life." He is expressing a faith which remains fixed on the God who cannot be seen. Now, God the Son did become human. That's who Jesus is. The full mystery of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit remains hidden from us. So we struggle as the Israelites did in the time of Joshua.   We have God's Word. We have the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist by which we remain united with the mystery. So we continue as people being fed by Word and sacrament, encouraging one another not to fall for the various objects we find in life, even if they happen to be good. We can reach a point where we say, yes, there are many good things in our life and I can enjoy them. I don't have to possess them. In fact, if I just keep my heart on the gift of God himself, other things will become much less important. And that makes for a life of great simplicity.

Peter Lord, VK3FPL/4 moved some 25 years ago to Queensland for his retirement, living at Gilston in the Gold Coast hinterland. He was active on all bands to UHF, with many HF skeds to friends bank home in Melbourne. Born in 1929, he was an official photographer and film-maker at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and soon set up a leading film processing company employing hundreds of people. He invested in a diverse range of businesses, including one which made high-quality pipe organs for churches and recital halls. A genius master craftsman, Peter seemed able to make or fix almost anything, with a well-equipped workshop in the garage under his home. Well into his 50s, Peter was actively involved in motorcycle racing, competing with some success at the Easter races at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. Peter's house bristled with antennas, almost all of which he had constructed himself, the centrepiece being a tall aluminium tower with VHF Yagis and a huge 40m beam. Time catches us all in the end, and Peter was alert and active until his passing aged just shy of 95 years on December 17. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 50 years, his family and a great many friends. Vale Peter Lord, VK3FPL. ( From Chris Edmondson, VK4EO ) Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. It seems to be that this year is off to the proverbial flying start as we are already 14 days into January. I suppose the feeling of time passing by is hastened by going into the supermarket and seeing the display of Easter hot cross buns. Be that as it may, I wonder how many of us have our calendars market with the amateur activities we want to enjoy for this year? On that point, the current issue of Amateur Radio magazine has a great two page calendar of contests as the centre fold courtesy of Alan, VK4SN. If we just want this information for personal use or as an aid for our club activities, this is the very useful Christmas present. I still miss the release of the annual callbook which contained so much of this kind of material. Every so often I see someone trying to verify details from years back and inevitably it is the callbook sitting on someone's shelf that has the answer. Perhaps my hope is in vain but I would like to see it resume publication notwithstanding the somewhat specious claims of loss of privacy that caused the ACMA to end its licensing. I have been trying to keep abreast of the weather forecasts and it almost seems that we are in a recurrent pattern, this summer. The heat of the days and the frequent showers provide a constant reminder as the grass seems reach higher for the clouds each day. In some areas there have been random but strong storms bringing deluges and currently there is a focus on the Gulf of Carpentaria where a low pressure system could spawn another cyclone. Over some time I have invested in what are called power banks as a support when we need to use medical equipment and the mains is off, in particular and hopefully also use some for playing radios away from home. There have been some good price reductions from various outlets and hopefully a lot of us have taken the opportunity to grab a New Year bargain. The most versatile unit I have includes USB and 12 volt outlets along with a modest sine-wave inverter. Perhaps with the capacity of a club bulk buy, people could get the benefit of further discounts on buying units like this. Once again the various reports on Sunspot Cycle 25 indicate a volatility which provides a lottery of operating conditions. Now there are suggestions that the cycle should peak this year and not 2025 as was previous thought. For many operators who have never experienced the joys of radio in a sunspot maximum, it is the time to put a signal on air and like fishing, see what bites. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

Flushed Away is a 2006 computer-animated adventure comedy film directed by Sam Fell and David Bowers, produced by Cecil Kramer, David Sproxton, and Peter Lord, and written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan and Will Davies. It was the third and final DreamWorks Animation film co-produced with Aardman Features following Chicken Run (2000) and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and was the first Aardman project mostly made in CGI animation as opposed to starting with their usual stop-motion. The film stars the voices of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Shane Richie, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and Jean Reno. In the film, a pampered pet rat named Roddy St. James (Jackman) is flushed down the toilet in his Kensington apartment by a sewer rat named Sid (Richie), and befriends a scavenger named Rita Malone (Winslet) in order to get back home while evading a sinister toad (McKellen) and his hench-rats (Nighy and Serkis). -- Audiomorphs is an Animorphs podcast which is actually not so much a podcast as a bootleg Animorphs audiobook. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

Prayer of the day : "O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen."   Sermon I Kings 19: 9-18, Psalm 85:8-13, Romans 10:5-15, Matthew 14:22-33           Now the Silence   [God] said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”  Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind, an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.  When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.  Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”   This reading from I Kings is paired with the Matthew story of Jesus going up on a mountain by himself to pray.  Elijah had been sentenced to death by Queen Jezebel, held responsible for the death of the 450 prophets of the god Baal.  He was running for his life, surely scared but also so depressed that he just wanted to die.  We read, in the wilderness “he asked God that he might die.  ‘It is enough, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.'”  (Read 19:3-10)   Then these words from God, “Go out and stand on the mountain…”   In the gospel story Jesus has just dismissed an enormous crowd where the sick were cured and 5000 men plus women and children had been fed by the disciples with five loaves and two fish blessed by Jesus.     And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray.  When evening came, he was there alone…   But, unlike Elijah, Jesus was not running for his life.  Surely he too was grieving, though not for himself like Elijah, but from the news that his cousin, John the Baptist, had just been beheaded by order of King Herod.  And Jesus was no doubt weary from a very long day caring for probably 10,000 or more people.  And likely he was mindful that the day would come when he too, like John, would be put to death. Jesus needed to be alone; he needed quiet; he needed time to pray.   During the Confession of Sins, the moments when we are silent are intentional.  And I have asked Bruce to wait a minute or so after this sermon before introducing the hymn of the day just for silence.  It was in “a sound of sheer silence” or in other translations “a still small voice” or “a softly whispering voice” that the LORD spoke to Elijah.  I think it was how his Father spoke to and with Jesus, his Son…And I suspect, a primary way the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit speak to all of us.   I am only beginning to appreciate the words of Martin Luther who said that when he knew the day ahead would be especially challenging, he would pray for two hours before engaging all that would come that day.  [I am nowhere yet near that laudable discipline!]  But don't you and I know that when we have been still, as still as best we can be, if even for a few minutes, we are sometimes given greater focus and clarity about what's next in our lives; yes, what and how God would have us be and do for the most loving living of each day?   “Now the Silence” is a beautiful hymn you may have heard and perhaps sung.  I've asked Deb to sing it during Holy Communion today. I speak the words now:   Now the silence, Now the peace, Now the empty hands uplifted; Now the kneeling, Now the plea, Now the Father's arms in welcome; Now the hearing, Now the pow'r, Now the vessel brimmed for pouring; Now the body, Now the blood, Now the joyful celebration, Now the wedding, Now the songs, Now the heart forgiven leaping; Now the Spirit's visitation, Now the Son's epiphany, Now the Father's blessing.  Now.  Now.  Now.   Now the silence, now wherein the still small voice may be heard…  For Jesus and for each of us in whom he dwells, such silence is filled with God's very self.  The sheer silence is a way God prepares us for challenges, including the storms that lie ahead.   When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them.  And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea.   Early in the morning, early each morning, might we say, might we believe Jesus is walking toward us?   I think about the people on the island of Maui where the wind and the waves and, most disastrously, the raging fires have swept through entire villages. Can they believe that Jesus is walking toward them, these shocked and devastated people?  Can they believe that his Father's arms are now and forever holding even loved ones who have perished? …For the survivors, maybe not right now.  Maybe now God is for them at best an apparition, at worst bringing judgment and death.    But can we believe that Jesus is walking toward them?  Can we believe that when their hope and their faith is failing, when they are drowning, Jesus is reaching out to rescue them?   A member of Faith in a recent Tuesday Bible study shared a challenge for our congregation.  It is, albeit, much, much less consequential than that faced by the people of Maui. In approving our annual budget, we counted on the sale yet this year of a portion of our property to eliminate our still significant nearly half-million building debt.  But now it seems likely that the sale will not be consummated so quickly.    Granted, this is nowhere near the challenge faced by the people of Hawaii, but it is our challenge.  Will we meet our obligations of providing Word and sacrament and other forms of caring for each other and of providing consistent care for others in this hurting and frightened world we have been called to generously and steadfastly serve?    But hear the gospel for the people of Hawaii and for the people of Faith:  For this and for any other challenges we face, whether great or small, Jesus on the mountain, in the night of our distress, has already prayed for us.  And now Jesus is on his way to help us. Though we may not immediately recognize him, can we not in the silence of our hearts hear him say, “Take heart, it is I.  Do not be afraid.”?   But maybe we are Peter:  “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”  [Jesus] said, “Come.”  So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus.  But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”    Hear the gospel: Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”  When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.  And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”   One thoughtful commentator has suggested that Jesus' words, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” were not a harsh, belittling criticism, but a gentle, softly spoken reminder to Peter to trust that Jesus has got this.  The worst storms in our lives cannot separate us from God's saving love made known to us in his Son.   Now, in the silence following this sermon, think of a strong, battering wind in your  life.  Then hear Jesus, walking on troubled waters, saying to you, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”   Amen.

People walked away from Jesus when he spoke about the Eucharist. I can emulate St. Peter: "Lord, who shall I go to? You have the message of eternal life, and I believe, I know that You are the Holy One of God." Peter is a friend and consoles Jesus by being there for Him. That's what we do when we pray for 10 minutes every day. We too can console Him by being there.

Faith is not passive, it demands that we step out in obedience to the savior risking much to be rewarded by the impossible. It is only reckless when fail to verify the call by asking the question like Peter “Lord, if it's you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. There are many calls upon our lives but there is only one that can speak to the restlessness of our hearts and that is found in the voice of the Lord Jesus beckoning to come. Ladies n Genminminmin (er, min...), yes it's a 'cracking day' (see what I'm doing there?!) in 'The Clearing' as I have the great pleasure of welcoming the warm and wonderful Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations to the show!Aardman Animations is (as I'm sure you know!) the globally renowned 4 times Academy Award Winning Clay Animated & Short Films company based in Bristol."Nice Cheese Gromit!"4 Academy awards, The Freedom of the City of Bristol and a GOLD Blue Peter Badge to his name, in the bag and in the Clearing! Peter Lord also created and gifted "Morph" to the world; Morph being the wonderful plasticine comedy sidekick to Tony Hart and the iconic children's TV programme "Vision On" back in the day, that formed part of the fabric of my (and our) childhoods!Peter also Directed one of my very very favourite Aardman Films "Chicken Run", with "Chicken Run 2" being in production as we speak.Hurrah!More about Peter Lord:Born in Bristol, if Peter Lord had taken the Van Gogh advice, which he quotes, he might now be playing cricket. Or the piano. Instead he followed his father's suggestion and made the most of whatever came his way. Aged 12, on his first day at school in Woking, he took the only desk left. This placed him next to a lad known there as ‘Sproxton D A.' (none other than Aardman Animations co-founder Dave Sproxton!)45+ years later these two are still working together. What started as a ‘hobby for a dreary afternoon' is now creating career opportunities for literally hundreds of others at Aardman Animations. ‘Pete and Dave' were the co-founders of this extraordinarily successful creative enterprise, which now belongs to its staff - a bit like the John Lewis model but Aardman's models are much more famous on a worldwide basis. They include the amazing Morph, Chas and many others, like "Shaun the Sheep"; "Wallace and Gromit"; "Chicken Run"; "Flushed Away" to name but some of an absolutely extraordinary canon of work on which we've all brought our children up (and ourselves!) It all started with ordinary plasticine and Peter still remembers his artist mother making a plasticine loaf for him when he was aged around 4. Then cutting it into slices! At age 10, he credits his teacher in his School for Gifted Children in Australia in sharing his enthusiasm for Ogden Nash, Ray Bradbury and Marcel Marceau. That enthusiasm inspired him, more than the poetry or the prose or the mime. It kept him going through the ‘long days and long nights' of building an international business in animation. Good decisions, good timing, good luck and hard work - simple as that, apparently! Peter is clear: “There are no secrets. Stop-motion is magic!” The work-side of Peter Lord's career is already well documented. As a delightful bonus, the personal side of his life is gently revealed here - like his love for wet walnuts and bagpipe music! Like his questionable but credible claim to being the first (or at least among the front runners) ever to publish work by the teenage Kazou Ishiguro, now Sir Kazou Ishiguro, the Nobel Prizewinning writer responsible for a variety of masterpieces from ‘Remains of the Day' to the new awards-contender ‘Living'', starring Bill Nighy. Peter Lord's own awards include an Oscar or two, Freedom of the City of Bristol and the presentation of a Blue Peter Gold Badge, which he found “ridiculously pleasing.” He describes the world of animation as an ‘esoteric community, low on ego, where drawing is a great way of thinking'. In this curious community, Peter Lord is a shining example of delightful, understated talent. Please lend him your ears!

Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I'm Tearsheet's founder and editor-in-chief, Zack Miller. If we were only talking about the benefits of open finance a couple of years ago, we're already seeing open finance take root today. Firms like Plaid and Codat are showing the power of integrating customer financial data across firms and into apps. New use cases are popping up all the time. Today's guest is Peter Lord, CEO of Codat. Codat zeroes in on small business financial data. That's a very different problem to solve than, say, aggregating consumer data. Pete joins me on the podcast to talk about the challenges of wrangling SMB financial data. We also chat about how and where he decides to provide value-added services on top of the data he's sharing versus just providing the raw data. Pete shares his feedback on the evolution of use cases for SMB financial data he's seen over the past 5 years of running Codat.

The Command to Forgive

The Last Two WeeksOver the last two weeks, we have explored two distinct but related topics: first: judging actions, not people, and second: how ideology can come at the expense of charity and kindness. Those topics are foundational for any conversation on forgiveness. So, if you have not read or listened to those, I highly recommend going back and viewing those first! To Err is Human, to Forgive, DivineAlexander Pope, in his poem An Essay on Criticism written in 1711, says, “To err is human, to forgive divine.” This comes from an old Latin proverb errare humanum est (to err is human). Erring is easy. We do it all the time. We make silly mistakes and sometimes we make big mistakes. We can be selfish, careless, ignorant, or down-right malicious.Every human being sins and falls short of the glory of God (cf. Rom. 3:23). We all need forgiveness. Why then is it so darn hard to forgive sometimes? Maybe we are waiting for the apology that never comes. Maybe we have tried to make things right but it falls on deaf ears.Given our fallen world, it seems that forgiveness is just out of reach, a lot of the time. This is why Alexander Pope says that forgiveness is divine. Do we need the omnipotence of Almighty God to muster up forgiveness? Or perhaps, paradoxically, we need to emulate the sublime humility of God to forgive others?Do We Need to Forgive? - Natural OrderIs it necessary to forgive? Do we need to forgive? If it is so difficult, perhaps it would be easier to forgo the exercise and just move on? The problem with this is that resentment can build. Forgiveness is important for our physical and mental well-being. As the Catholic author Bert Ghezzi puts it in his 1980 book The Angry Christian, “Resentment is like a poison we carry around inside us with the hope that when we get the chance we can deposit it where it will harm another who has injured us. The fact is that we carry this poison at extreme risk to ourselves.”Phrased another way: unforgiveness and resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. If we do not let go, this resentment will kill us. Before you get too deep into resentment, remember that most people err out of ignorance. Malice certainly exists. People do bad things out of malevolence; it would be naive to think otherwise. But it would be a mistake to assume malice. Instead, apply “Hanlon's razor” - “never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” I am not suggesting we assume everyone is stupid. Remember to judge actions and words, not people. However, it is far more charitable to assume someone is acting out of misguided passion or ignorance rather than malice. Do We Need to Forgive? - Supernatural OrderWhat about in the supernatural order, spiritually-speaking? Our Lord Jesus lays it all out on the line for us: “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Mt. 6:14-15).”We are all sinners in need of God's forgiveness. Accordingly, it is not only a good idea to forgive; it is absolutely necessary for salvation. Our Blessed Lord shows us also in the Gospel of St. Mark that, “whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses (Mk. 11:25).”  Our forgiveness of others is plainly concomitant with the forgiveness that we receive from God. Jesus Himself teaches us to pray to the Father with these words, Father: “... forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors (Mt. 6:12).” Hearing this alongside the other two passages calling for us to be forgiving, the necessity is clear. But Jesus makes it even clearer in St. Matthew's Gospel right after giving us the Our Father prayer. He says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Mt. 6:14-15).”The call to forgiveness is so important that it needs to be put forcefully and plainly. If you and I do not forgive others, we will go to Hell. The call is that simple. This act, however, is not simple; in fact, it is impossible for man. But with God, all things are possible. He gives us the grace in His Holy Spirit and through the merits of His Cross.Forgiving Even Our EnemiesForgiveness is one of the most powerful acts of love. It is requisite, if we are to love. This is all well and good when the person who needs to be forgiven is a friend, family member, or acquaintance, but what about when the person is our enemy? Jesus says at the end of the Sermon on the Mount:“43 You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:43-48).”For a brief reflection on this last line about perfection, check out “The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good” from a couple weeks back, here on Will Wright Catholic! We must love even our enemies and this means forgiving them.Radical Forgiveness, In ChristOne of the most poignant examples in recent memory comes from Corrie Ten Bloom. She was a Dutch woman who was arrested by the Nazis for hiding Jews. She survived countless horrors in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Later, in 1947, in a church in Munich, she saw one of the vicious guards of Ravensbrück. Since the war, this vile man had become a Christian. After her talk, he approached her and asked her for forgiveness. By the power of Jesus, Corrie Ten Bloom did forgive that Nazi guard. This is the strength God gives us to overcome anger, if we only ask.  It would have been easy for Corrie Ten Bloom to give into hatred of this guard who had caused her so much suffering. It would have been easy for her to curse the man and walk away. A compelling argument could even be made that he would have deserved to be treated like dirt.  She describes this moment, frozen before the former guard, as one of the most difficult things she has ever had to do. She cried out in the silence of her heart to Christ saying, “Jesus, help me! I can lift my hand. I can do that much. You supply the feeling.” Of course, Jesus answered. He desired for forgiveness to win the day, as it always does. She put out her hand describing being filled with a “healing warmth.” Tears came to her eyes and she said, “I forgive you, brother. With all my heart.” The love of God has a power that cannot be explained in words. This forgiveness is impossible for man, but with God all things are possible. This radical love and forgiveness is only possible with Jesus Christ. He Himself said, “Father, forgive them” of the Romans while suffering His agonizing passion and death. Are We Forgiven?Okay. We can forgive our friends, family members, and acquaintances, and even our enemies. But, what about forgiving ourselves? Sometimes the hardest person to forgive stares back at us in the mirror each morning. Again, the only way to truly forgive ourselves is to love ourselves. To get to this point of humility, we have to see ourselves how God sees us. We need to deeply experience His love, mercy, and forgiveness. You might be thinking: that's fine for other people, but I'm pretty awful. I mean, I suck. Well… first of all, shush. No you don't. In the future, we are going to talk about the difference between conviction and condemnation. Suffice it to say, the former is a gift from God and the latter is from the pits of Hell. What does God reveal to us about His merciful forgiveness? Above all, He showed us the depths of His love from the Cross. Jesus Christ is sinless and blameless, but for our sake, for our sins, He endured the weight of the Cross. He suffered, died, and rose so that we might be forgiven. We share in His merits because He made us coheirs with Him through Baptism. What a gift!God Alone Blots Out Our TransgressionsGod alone can forgive sins. Furthermore, we need Him to see our faults clearly. As the Psalmist says, “Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults (Ps. 19:12).” As an aside, this is why I end my confession in the Sacrament of Penance with some iteration of: “and for all the other sins I have forgotten, I am sorry.” I am not saying this to “cover my bases;” I am giving thanks to God for declaring me innocent from hidden faults.Only when we receive God's love and mercy with an open heart will we be truly happy. As the Psalmist says, “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered (Ps. 32:1).” How do we become so fortunate? How do we receive this divine forgiveness?!? Simple: we ask. As Pope Francis says rightly and so often: “God never tires of forgiving us.” We need only ask for His forgiveness with a contrite heart. Then, we receive the promise of Jeremiah: “I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me (Jer. 33:8).”Further, by a true miracle, it is as if our sins did not exist. To illustrate the point, God speaks through the Prophet Isaiah saying, “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins (Is. 43:25).” The Psalmist echoes the same joyous song: “as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us (Ps. 103:12).”When and How Many Times Must We Forgive? It is clear that God forgives us when we are contrite and ask for His forgiveness. He never tires of forgiving us. Every single time you or I commit the same sin that we confessed last time. Every time we find new ways to offend the Lord. He does not stop His mercy. As long as we have breath in our lungs, we can receive His forgiveness. What, then, should our response to this gratuitous mercy be? It should be gratitude, first. What a beautiful gift to continually be drawn back to our Heavenly Father by our Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Second, we should do likewise. In the Gospel of St. Luke, Jesus says this:“Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,' you must forgive him (Lk. 17:3-4).”Likewise, in St. Matthew's Gospel, Jesus is asked by St. Peter: “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus replies, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times (Mt.18:21-22).” Here, Jesus is not saying that we forgive seventy-seven times but to heck with them on the seventy-eighth time. It simply means an uncertain and inscrutable number - as many times as it takes. This is not an excuse to sin, nor is it a free pass for the offender. Right before this passage Jesus says to His disciples: “Tempations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. Pay attention to yourselves… (Lk. 17:1-2,3a).”But when someone does offend us, in sin, but then asks for our forgiveness, who are we to deny them? We cannot judge people. We judge actions. We can judge rightly that an action against us was immoral or imprudent, but we cannot judge the offender's heart and soul. So, following the command of Jesus, we forgive - as many times as it takes. The only way for this platform to grow is for you to get the word out! Peter Lord founded Aardman Animations, with his school friend David Sproxton, in 1972. The Bristol-based company rapidly became known for its witty, character-driven, stop-motion work in Plasticine, giving the world characters such as Morph, Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, as well as working on a dizzying array of feature films, shorts, TV shows, adverts, music videos, computer games, TV idents… Frankly the list goes on. The studio has won Oscars for the likes of Creature Comforts, The Wrong Trousers and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. While Peter himself has been nominated himself on several occasions, including for The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!. Aardman recently picked up yet another nomination for its short, Robin Robin. Peter was awarded a CBE in 2006 and received a Blue Peter Gold badge, no less, in 2015.In this bumper episode we talk about: meeting his partner David Sproxton at the age of 12; why Bristol became so important to Aardman; picking up Plasticine for the first time and why it's a transformative material; creating Morph; working with the legend that is Tony Hart; the genius of Nick Park; cracking Hollywood and wearing a jacket bought from Oxfam to the Oscars; the role technology plays in the studio's output; and turning the company into an employee-owned business.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/materialmatters?fan_landing=true)

Gavin is a true creative polymath, stretching his hands from directing, design, music, photography, writing and speaking. Gavin has been working with the Oscar winning animation studio Aardman for 14 years, mecca of stop motion, perhaps best known for bringing to life the wonderful and childhood shaping characters Wallace and Grommit. Gav is hilarious, articulate so curious and creative, and one of the most grateful humans we have had on the show. During our chat, we go through what it's like being a multi disciplinary creative in a world where specialising is typically more coveted, how being technology and medium agnostic can open you up to unique crossover and connections and he absolutely hits the nail on the head with the topic of style and finding your voice. Gav takes us through a snapshot of his process when directing the stunning and emotional stop motion animated short film, Turtle Journey.  I Hope you enjoy this episode where we pay tribute to the cement layers and manual labourers of the world, wig out over disrupting the space time continuum and Gav and I accidentally invent the newest version of LowFi beats to chill to.   Gavin Strange JamFactory @jamfactory JamFactory Twitter Aardman @Aardmananimations     Links The Imagineering Story  Peter Lord  Turtle Journey Film  Creature comforts  Morph  All This Mayhem  Seven title sequence  Teenage Engineering OP-1      Quotes "I love everything and I want to try and do everything whenever I can." The company is building smart solutions that save time, money and enhance the customer experience in a matter of hours.Episode Highlights:00.30: Peter explains, “We help our clients who are large financial companies connected to the software used by their small business customers. We connect to accounting software things like Xero, Sage, QuickBooks E-commerce software, payments and marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, etc.” 00.50 Jason affirms, “You are a savior for financial institutions because you built the integration pieces yourself. It's not a make your integration, but essentially, you're making it easier for people to access all that through one portal versus multiple different API instances.” 01.50: Peter studied at Southampton University as a software engineer and moved into a product role. Through that personal experience, he saw the need to automate processes.02.10: They built their business where small businesses applying for a loan had to submit financial statements and ledgers in PDF agreements. Peter and his company replaced the manual process of Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage accounting.03.41 Jason inquires,” How many different integrations have you built for different technology?” 04.00 Jason: asks, “Talk to me about some of the challenges of the amount of data you have got to basically make accessible on one platform. Give me one example in accounting software.” 04.18: Peter replies, “We cover everything from high-level financials, digital Ledger, that property loss or balance sheet reports examples right down to the transaction level detail is in the journal.” 07.45 Peter says, “There is a new client finding, new spaces for technology every week.”09.33 Jason inquires, “Codat is just an open API at this point, or are you moving data between different systems; is that something that the end consumer is doing? or is that something that you have actually built; a bunch about the shelf integrations form?”10.35: Peter shares his mission is to make life easier for small businesses, and that's what drives in right movement.11.54: Jason asks, “Overall, this is not a small piece of work that I am curious about; any statistics on how much data you are actually parsing for people at this point?”12.40 Peter explains they are now introducing elements of lending or capital financing.13.30 Jason reiterates, “You know the value of data, right. I'm sure you thought of the number of ways that you can move it around and basically collected for these people. But small businesses are going to find ways to solve their problems with your solution that you never dreamt of so, that makes a lot of sense.” 17.00 Jason asks Peter, “What's been the biggest challenge in the company to where it is today?” 17.07: Peter shares the biggest challenge faced by them was to hire the right people.18.05: Peter explains that they are making products, so it's building something, building our products, continuing to see expanding and budget in the hands of more users and more users for us. 3 Key Points:Peter talks about the creation of Codat. “What leads to its founding, and what problem are they trying to address?” Jason asks Peter, “Talk to me about the different verticals that you are basically involved in. You have over 100 clients at this point around the world. What are the different use cases they have used before?”Peter shares, “What's the feedback they are getting from the companies that choose to partner with Codat. What are they saying in terms of the amount of time and effort, and development costs? Tweetable Quotes:“For our clients, it's not just the extraction or pulling of that data, but we also take the push of data back into the software packages to help our clients reconcile what's going on in their products with business customers and other systems of record.” - Peter Lord“There are all sorts of different ways that small businesses use their accounting software running on.” - Peter Lord“People are so important, and the company is our team, and so we make sure that we have been hiring the best people.” - Peter LordResources Mentioned:Facebook – Jason Pereira's FacebookLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInWoodgate.com – SponsorLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInPeter Lord: Website | LinkedIn Podcast Editing See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
