Biographer Nicholas Boggs joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his groundbreaking new book, Baldwin: A Love Story, the first major biography of James Baldwin to be published in three decades. Boggs recalls how finding Baldwin's only children's book in a Yale library as a college student led him to track down the volume's illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac, Baldwin's last great love. He talks about interviewing people who had never previously spoken about their relationships with the iconic author, including Cazac, whom at least one previous biographer had wrongly guessed was deceased. Boggs reflects on the importance of considering Blackness, queerness, and chosen family as central to Baldwin's life and art. He discusses Baldwin's youth in Harlem, his years in Europe and Istanbul, and his relationships with the painters Beauford Delaney and Lucien Happersberger, the actor Engin Cezzar, and Cazac, as well as many others. Boggs considers how Baldwin's deepest friendships and romances influenced his life and work, including Another Country, Go Tell It on the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son, and Giovanni's Room. He reads from the book. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). Give to help Chris make the Truce Podcast In 2 Samuel 24 David is told that he must buy a certain piece of land in an act of repentance for his sins. The man who owns the land says that he'd like to give David the land and the animals to sacrifice. But David turns him down, insisting that he won't give to God something that cost him nothing. This story demonstrates something that may be missing from the Christian world today. Sacrifice should cost us something. Sacrifice should be a sacrifice. In the 1970s, school districts in the North and South were told that they had to integrate schools. This move was opposed by people of all sorts, including some Christians who worried that if segregation academies lost their tax-exempt status then Christian schools would too. This is the sad story of how some evangelicals with large followings came to oppose school integration. Our special guest is Daniel K. Williams, author of the excellent book God's Own Party. I also feature a clip from Angie Maxwell author of The Long Southern Strategy. Give to help Chris continue Truce. Update: I would like to apologize for an error I made in the original version of this story. I stated that tuition payments to private schools are tax-exempt on the federal level. They are not. They sometimes are on the state level. The episode has been edited to reflect the correct information. When Brown v. Board of Education passed the Supreme Court in 1954, segregationists stepped up their efforts to keep black children out of their schools. If they couldn't use public schools, they'd establish their own private academies. In the 60's the Supreme Court struck down mandatory Bible reading and prayer in schools, causing some Christians to establish private Christian schools. This movement had unfortunate timing in that it lined up with the segregation academy movement. To our shame, many Protestant schools were segregation academies. But this story isn't so easy. In this episode and the next, we'll explore the strange twists and turns of the private school movements of the 1960s and 70s. They illustrate just how tangled evangelicals are with schools, taxes, and racism. Are you considering whether to move to another country before an economic collapse hits? This Ready Your Future episode explores the real experiences of an American expat who moved to the Philippines 12 years ago to escape economic pressures, tax hikes, and healthcare mandates. Todd breaks down the realities of expatriating for preparedness reasons, sharing insights from someone who lived through the challenges firsthand. You'll discover the unexpected difficulties with food quality, infrastructure problems, construction nightmares, and security concerns that many don't consider before making the leap. This episode examines whether moving abroad truly offers better survival prospects during an economic collapse or if staying in the United States might actually be the smarter preparedness strategy. Todd also explores alternative solutions like relocating within the U.S. to rural areas that offer self-sufficiency without sacrificing modern conveniences. It's the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it's time for our annual James Baldwin episode. This year we're reading Baldwin's first novel, Go Tell It On the Mountain. Show NotesThankfully, we're not close to running out of Baldwin books just yet, but we may have to do a retrospective at some point anyway. Really we just want an excuse to re-read Another Country.Go Tell It On the Mountain is on both Modern Library and Time's list of Top 100 Books of the 20th Century. (The Time list is actually weirdly specific to between 1923 and 2005, but it's easier to say 20th century.)Find the full list of all our James Baldwin episodes below. The next episode is a book club episode and we'll be reading Jette's pick, The Nineties by Chuck Klosterman. Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Click here to send us a topic idea or question for Weekend Wisdom.Question: My husband and I have two adopted twin boys who are 8 months old, and we've had them since birth. We've been on the fence for years about a big move outside of the country, but we're currently leaning towards leaving. My husband and, by extension, our kids have dual nationality with the country we'd go to. Thankfully, I'm also allowed to tag along. We currently live near a large family and support network from both sides of the family and would be mostly on our own except for a few distant relatives after the move. We are also close and in frequent contact with our sons' birth family, but they don't live near us so that relationship has always been planned to be a mostly long-distance relationship. We would plan on setting aside funds just for visiting our family and our birth family every one or two years, but ultimately all our children's family relationships will become long-distance. We worry about the move exacerbating feelings of abandonment or isolation from all sides of their family as they'd not only be raised in another culture but another language and continent. We all come from similar cultural backgrounds, so we aren't too worried about being able to keep them in touch with their birth culture. But we want to be sensitive to their particular needs as to how this could affect them as adoptees. Is there any research on how adoptees are affected by being adopted into larger vs smaller families? Or adoptees who move abroad or are adopted into immigrant families? The second part of a special double feature, returning us to Krakow's Unsound festival, where we began with Episode 1. The inaugural episode featured Resina and Lea Bertucci, from Poland and New York, respectively, and so for the sake of symmetry, this episode pairs Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher, two artists who make affective, vocal-based music, but to very different affects. That is to say, this is an episode that leans into contrasts: the US and Europe, home and away, morning and night, quiet and noise. We discuss non-dance DJ sets, the relationship between music and fashion, the joys and difficulties of traveling as an artist, and the adventurous programming of Unsound. For thirty-six year, James has been chasing this interview and now, he's finally secured it. Actor, writer and director Rupert Everett joins him to talk about the highs and lows of his extraordinary 40-year career in show business. Rupert discovered performing when he was a young boy and got a thrill from showing off in school plays at Ampleforth College - so much so, that he left school at 15 to pursue a career in acting. His breakout role came in 1981 when he was cast as Guy Bennett in Another Country. He went on to find fame in Hollywood, starring opposite Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding. Despite his success, Rupert admits he lacked the confidence to fully embrace Hollywood. He continued working in films and theatre but started to concentrate more on his writing. After a decade in the making, he released his first screenplay The Happy Prince in 2018 - a deeply personal project which he also directed and starred in.
