The plasticizers market is globalized with Europe dependant on imports of dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) from northeast Asia, Turkey and the US. However, global trade flows are shifting as US DOTP dumping investigations are progressing into the final stages and Trump's election is bolstering US trade protectionism Europe plasticizers editor Nicole Simpson speaks to US editor Daniel Lopes about the future of the plasticizers market against a backdrop of falling US feedstock costs, growing US protectionism and economic challenges.

European plasticizers editor Nicole Simpson, Asia-Pacific editor Li Peng Seng and US editor Larry Terry look at the plasticizers outlook for Q2 with a focus on trade flows. There continues to be intense uncertainty globally in the plasticizers market as all regions have been rocked by record feedstock costs and supply chain disruptions.Weak consumption in the East Asian market has led to several producers reducing run rates and absent import interest. The demand outlook for East Asia is gloomy for Q2 amid COVID-19 lockdowns in China and a general economic slowdown in the region. In the US, security of supply has emerged as a key issue for Q2 partly due to very limited supply from China. US sources are increasingly turning to DOTP from Taiwan and Turkey. In Europe, import interest has not picked up significantly despite production costs in the region skyrocketing.
