After 15 months of devastating conflict, a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas, and three female hostages – Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher - have been released and are now back in Israel. This release is the first of several expected over the next six weeks, with a total of 33 hostages to be returned. Ninety Palestinian prisoners were released overnight in exchange for the hostages, the Israeli prison service has said - most of them women and teenage boys. The UN estimates that 1.9 million people in Gaza have been internally displaced since the start of the most recent conflict, some 90% of the population. The humanitarian situation remains critical, with widespread destruction and significant damage to infrastructure including hosptials and severe shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and shelter. Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to BBC Chief Correspondent Lyce Doucet. We also hear from Ghada Al-Kourd in Deir al-Balah in the centre of the Gaza strip, and Sharone Lifschitz, whose parents were taken hostage by Hamas in October 2023.Geneticists from Trinity College Dublin and archaeologists from Bournemouth University have found evidence of female political and social empowerment during Britain's Iron Age. DNA sampled from a burial site in Dorset shows that two-thirds of the women were closely related, suggesting that women lived in the same communities and passed on their land and wealth to their daughters, while unrelated men tended to join the community from elsewhere. This type of social structure, known as “matrilocality” is the first documented instance in European pre-history and challenges the assumption that most societies were patrilocal. Dr Lara Cassidy, an Assistant Professor of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin who led the research, discusses the findings. President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated today in Washington D.C. It is of course his second term, having previously served as the 45th US president, he will now also become the 47th. Elise is a runner, author and all-round outdoors lover. In 2016 she became the first woman and youngest person to run self-supported around the coast of the UK – an adventure she was completely unqualified for, as an unexperienced runner whose athletic career consisted of one horrendous marathon dressed as a Crayola crayon. She is the author of best-selling book Coasting, which tells the story of her adventure and aims to show others that you don't need to be the best at something to achieve something big. You just have to be the one who does it. Good morning everyone! Thank you for tuning in to the podcast. Today is Saturday and we have a book review and it's called "Coasting" by Elise Downing. Elise was spending a lot of time crying on buses. She had just graduated from university; she had a shiny new flat, her first proper job and a budding relationship – and they were all making her utterly miserable. Sitting at work one day, she hit upon the obvious solution: Run 5,000 miles around the coast of Britain, carrying her kit on her back. Six months later Elise set off, with absolutely no ultra-running experience, unable to read a map and having never pitched a tent alone before. Over the 301 days that followed she developed a debilitating fear of farmyard animals, cried on a lot of beaches and saw Britain at its most wild and wonderful. Coasting is about putting one foot in front of the other, even when it feels impossible, and trying to enjoy it too. With heart and humour, Elise explores the thrill of taking risks and putting your trust in total strangers and learns some home truths along the way. Give a listen. Kev and Clare chat with actual legit published author and adventurer extraordinaire, Elise Downing. She speaks about the epic challenge of running 5000 miles around the coast of Britain self supported, and trust me when I say there are many lols along the way. They also talk bullying on and off social media, the training aids that you think are nonsense, and the (now) regular check in with Matt. It's a good one folks!
Elise Downing was sat in her London grad job office, miserable with the corporate grind, when the idea of running around the UK first came to her. In 2015 the spent 10 months running a lap of the UK, gradually building up her mileage to running 30-40 miles a day and for the most part staying with friends or strangers. It was a trip that would teach her the power and presence of kindness in the UK, the joy of long distance adventures and that the hardest step is simply committing to it in the first place. Elise's book, Coasting, is a touching, witty and inspiring account of her travels and why every person, however ordinary they think they are, is capable of adventure.Elise's book is available to buy from Waterstones, Amazon, Blackwell's and most other book retailers.
The Outdoors Fix is a podcast to inspire you to make the outdoors a bigger part of your life. It's hosted by Liv Bolton. Elise Downing was in her early twenties and sitting miserably in an office when she decided to do something more than a little out of the norm. She looked at a map of Great Britain and wondered if anyone had ever run around the coast. As you do. A search online suggested not many had. A big running adventure like that would be a good reason to quit her job, she thought. Scoot to 2016 and Elise became the first woman and youngest person to run around the coast of Britain. A distance of 5,000 miles (!). She's now written a book, Coasting, about that epic adventure. I met Elise for a walk in Leigh Woods near Bristol on a warm but blustery day in August. I wanted to find out what it really takes to get to the start line of a huge challenge like hers, how her body coped covering up to 40 miles a day, and what life has been like since she stopped running around the coast. Post-adventure life is a part of the story that we don't often hear about. Elise is keen to share the message that anyone can go on a big adventure, you just have to be the one who actually does it. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Outdoors Fix and don't forget to listen out for Elise's tips and advice for those interested in trail running or making the outdoors a bigger part of your life! Also don't miss the birdsong at the end of this podcast episode for a short, calming escape from your busy day. Liv x The Outdoors Fix is a podcast produced and hosted by Liv Bolton @liv_outsideuk You can find photos of the guests on Instagram @TheOutdoorsFix This episode of The Outdoors Fix was supported by outdoor footwear brand Merrell. Merrell is launching a year-long campaign called #StepFurther to encourage people from all walks of life to get outdoors on a micro-adventure to experience the benefits for both their physical and mental health. In this episode I speak to Elise Downing. I first heard of Elise when her brilliant book Coasting landed on my doormat. Elise is the youngest person ever to run the coast of Britain, and she has written a masterful memoir of that experience, detailing the literal and figurative ups and downs in the kind of voice that makes you want to go for a pint with her. What makes that feat even more remarkable, as I discover during this discussion, is that she set out with very little preparation and absolutely no idea about what such a thing would entail. She tells me about that, about the enthusiasm of her mentor Anna McNuff (but also Anna's horror at how little planning Elise had done beforehand), how she trained “on the job”, on becoming a fully paid up member of the Yes Tribe, and the problem with cows…Find out more about what Elise has been getting up to, and buy her book. In this episode we review the book 'Coasting' by Elise Downing. With Jak away, Char welcomes Bookhounds Pack Members Toby Fells and Tasha Thompson to the virtual podcast studio. Kia ora whanau. In 2015, having ran a marathon whilst dressed as a crayon, Elise Downing decided to set herself a bigger challenge. I mean, if you’ve run 42.2 in crayola cosplay anything else is gravy, right? To cut a long story short, in 2016 Elise ran the entire coast of Britain - London to London. That’s 5000 miles, 301 days, 7 pairs of running shoes, and according to Elise, approximately 987 slices of cake.Undertaking this type of challenge is undoubtedly life-changing and since this, running has become an integral part of Elise’s life. Elise has relayed her experience as a public speaker, motivating other young people to undertake challenges that they may have thought unthinkable. Elise was recently in New Zealand in her role with Breca Swimrun, handling social media and marketing for the company. Flying solo, Eugene met up with Elise in Ponsonby armed with a microphone and ginger slice to talk about Elise’s journey towards running around Britain, how the process has impacted on her wider life, dealing with recognition and how what started as a solitary undertaking exposed Elise to a multitude of people displaying kindness and community. We also ask, because we’ve always wanted too….just what is Swimrun? And how do you have a greatest run ever that isn’t running around a whole country? Enjoy!
Elise Downing ran the coastline of Great Britain. Five thousand miles over three hundred and one days.

She also pushed through some dark days and in doing so displayed an awesome ability to endure hardship and find a way to enjoy even the most difficult times.

This week features Skidmore winner Jasmine Petit of Outside In and a conversation with Elise Downing of Sisters of the Road from one of our Nonprofit Hour Live shows.
Elise started running in January 2013, on the back of a New Year’s resolution to run a half marathon, but she soon started to wonder how far she could run! On November 1st 2015 she set off to run around the British coast. In August 2016, after 301 days, Elise returned to Greenwich having ran 5000 miles. She ran self-supported, carrying all of her kit on her back, including camping equipment, and is the youngest person and only female to have completed this challenge. This adventure wasn’t about mile splits or Garmin stats. It wasn’t about being the fastest or the most athletic. It was about using running as a mode of transport by which to really explore both Elise’s home country and her own capabilities. The end result was a a great big British adventure, featuring a lot of cake and a terrible fear of cows. Interviews and documentaries about Nonprofit Organizations in Portland Oregon
In this Nonprofit Hour show we'll be hearing about a couple of nonprofits that are long established ones in the Portland area who are doing tremendously important work for people in vulnerable populations and doing it in a way that maintains their clients dignity and self worth. In the first half of the show Phil Busse spoke at our latest live recording event with Elise Downing of Sisters of the Road - a homeless support and advocacy group that has been operating in our city since 1979. It's been such a long standing foundation in our community that there's even a song written about them which we'll hear about during their interview. In the second half of the show we will learn about Rosehaven an organization that is approaching 20 years of serving women and children experiencing the trauma of abuse, loss of home and other disruptive life challenges. We were joined in our studio by their Executive Director, Rebekah Albert to took us through the history of Rosehaven and painted a picture of the experiences their guests have faced and how they created a safe, respectful community with support and services to assist the women and children in regaining stability in their lives.
