Think about where and how you live. Close your eyes and picture your ideal neighbourhood. We bet it looks something like this: a walkable neighbourhood designed around a fully functional farm, with different types of houses built from healthy, non-toxic, natural materials, multifamily, aging-proof, small but not too small, with plenty of privacy, and affordable. The neighbourhood is designed for meeting your neighbours, hence the word neighbourhood. Cars are confined to a designated area, and most importantly, there are lots of free-ranging kids and chickens. Why are we talking about real estate? Because so much agricultural land is being swallowed up by “development”. Cities are expanding, often building super ugly, incredibly toxic suburban homes on that land with big gates and big cars parked in driveways or garages, and kids who never go outside. At the same time, real estate is very good at raising money and investing it, often without taking negative externalities into account. So, what can we learn, and how can we use the highly developed real estate capital markets to build agrihoods and thriving regenerative farms, enabled by well-planned, healthy neighbourhoods? And yes, we can achieve market-rate returns. Happy to welcome on the podcast Neal Collins, founder of Hamlet Capital.More about this episode.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. In this episode, Lisa sits down with Offie, an alum of the Out of the Cave (OOTC) group coaching program, to explore her powerful, trauma-informed journey of healing. As the conversation unfolds, Lisa and Offie reflect on her adolescence marked by shame, peer pressure, and disconnection — and how sobriety in her twenties transformed coping into control. Through the challenges of marriage, secrecy, and self-judgment, Offie's path eventually led her to the Out of the Cave podcast — and then into the coaching program, where she began to understand her patterns through the lens of trauma, brain science, and compassion. Topics Include:Childhood LonelinessCoping MechanismsSelf-Compassion and Reparenting Trauma-Informed Recovery[3:09] Lisa introduces her former client, Offie, an artist with food, who decorates cakes and cookies, a hobby farmer who  has a couple of horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and a donkey. [06:24] Lisa and Offie discuss how her childhood was shaped by her father's alcoholism, illness (cirrhosis), and death shortly after she turned 8. Offie talks about her experiences of frequent loneliness, being left alone, and household stress amid limited resources. Office shares how she dissociated emotionally following her father's death and began using sugar and food for comfort, gaining weight around ages 10–11.[20:20] Offie shares with Lisa how working through modules 3–4 of the ACE during the group program brought up  memories of multiple abandonment-like episodes forward, linking trauma to food coping. Offie recounts multiple abandonment-like episodes: alone under her father's care, babysitting far from town while adults stayed out after bars closed, and her mother going out while her sister isolated in her bedroom.[26:47] Offie talks with Lisa about becoming promiscuous and how she was sexually victimized by a teacher, how she carried candy to gain popularity, and struggled with romantic acceptance due to body image, expanding her coping mechanisms from food to sexual behaviors while her dissociation persisted. [36:48] Lisa and Offie discuss how she believed she was “just like her dad,” rationalizing cheating, heavy blackout drinking, and academic avoidance due to low self-esteem and fear. Offie shares with Lisa how traumatic events affecting someone close to her, led her to seek treatment. Sobriety shifted coping to control—restrictive eating, intense exercise, quitting smoking, and career/education gains—while her core wounds remained.[44:12] Lisa and Offie talk about how in an unhappy marriage, she resumed having affairs, began binge eating, alternated starving/eating, and used horse riding as a distraction and that she dissociated to avoid sadness and fear. Offie shares how therapy facilitated insight and separation from an unhealthy marriage and how her new romantic partnership enhanced her satisfaction and stability.[1:01:35] Offie shares with Lisa that on a road trip to visit her ill sister led to discovering the OOTC podcast and resonating with safety themes and familial alcoholism, prompting her participation in the mirror challenge and finally the group coaching program.[1:05:25] Offie shares that during the group she learned brain science, reframed narratives , and developed regulation tools. Lisa and Offie discuss how the group program differs by addressing the whole person, providing a safe group environment, reparenting practices, and boundaries. They wrap up the episode with Offie dedicating the episode to her sister, Ruth, who passed away last year.*The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC.Purchase the OOTC book of 50 Journal PromptsLeave Questions and Feedback for Lisa via OOTC Pod Feedback Form Email Lisa: lisa@lisaschlosberg.comOut of the Cave Merch - For 10% off use code SCHLOS10Lisa's Socials: Instagram Facebook YouTube

A conversation with Anat Shenker-Osorio, founder of A.S.O. Communications, a progressive political communication bureau known for slogans such as “Don't take the temperature, change it” and “A great message doesn't say what's already popular; a great message makes popular what needs to be said".We try so hard in the regenerative (and probably any other progressive) space to work on our messaging, how to communicate, how to reach people inside our bubble and beyond. We try to speak to those within the agrochemical and food industry, to make them see how environmentally sound, healthy, and economically interesting a different food and agriculture system could be. But somehow, we haven't gotten very far. We're constantly out-lobbied and outsmarted by the very well-organised extractive ag industry. (No, this isn't an evil conspiracy, but it is definitely well-organised.)With Anat we dive deep into the world of effective campaigning, messaging, and communication. Because we're always going to be up against a much higher budget, but let's at least use the airspace we do have as effectively as possible. But we've got news for you: most people don't want to join the losing team. So, stop communicating like we've already lost. Start getting people to join the small but winning team. Don't deny reality and never lie. But do understand what makes people listen, and more importantly, what makes them take action: consume differently, protest, organise, vote (if you can).Because in the end, this is all about who has the power.More about this episode.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. A conversation with Louis De Jaeger, international keynote speaker, author, award-winning filmmaker, and landscape designer, about dreams, action, and storytelling—how to reach and touch people. We discuss why storytelling is highly underrated and underfunded, and why he is organizing a festival—not the next Burning Man, but a regeneration festival. He shares his excitement about small water cycle restoration, the biotic pump, and much more. And in the end, it all boils down to one simple message: Eat More Trees.During his 5-year sabbatical that turned into a lifelong mission to regenerate landscapes, Louis' revelation came during world travels where he witnessed environmental degradation firsthand—monoculture landscapes so depressing "you want to drive against a tree, but there are no trees." This observation sparked his mission to regenerate 550 million hectares of land globally, potentially cooling our planet by two degrees Celsius.Beyond the environmental benefits, Louis paints a compelling vision of a regenerative future characterized by abundance rather than sacrifice. "We're going to have an even more luxurious lifestyle, we're going to have better food that tastes fantastic" he assures us. His approach isn't about shaming people into environmentalism but showing how regenerative practices create healthier, more desirable lives.More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/louis-de-jaeger.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. "Convenience is a lie because it doesn't save time. You might save time in that moment, but it steals your energy moments after." - Sarah BaylissIn this candid conversation, nutritional therapist Sarah Bayliss shares her journey from struggling with severe dyslexia throughout her education to finding her purpose in nutrition. After pushing through the educational system and landing in a high-stress marketing career that led to burnout, Sarah discovered the profound impact of proper nutrition on her health, which inspired a career change. Despite her learning challenges, she pursued a degree in nutritional therapy, even tackling biochemistry. Sarah explains how she helps clients understand that their environmental inputs - from food to sleep to relationships - directly impact their physical and mental function. She advocates for simple, intentional changes rather than quick fixes, emphasizing awareness of how daily choices affect long-term health.Do Nourish: How to eat for resilience - Paperback out now Key TakeawaysSarah's early diagnosis with severe dyslexia created educational challenges that framed her mindset as a "survival journey" rather than pursuing what she loved. After achieving success in marketing, Sarah experienced burnout and health issues that led her to discover the transformative power of nutrition.Despite her dyslexia, Sarah boldly pursued nutritional therapy education, including biochemistry, motivated by wanting her daughter to see her happy in her work.Sarah views symptoms as the body's communication system - signals that something is functionally not optimal that should be addressed rather than ignored. She emphasizes understanding how environmental inputs (food, sleep, light, movement, relationships) impact function, rather than just treating symptoms.Sarah cautions against "convenience" foods, which may save time in the moment but steal energy and health in the long run.Breaking out of "autopilot" requires self-awareness and connecting behaviors to deeper purpose - making small, consistent changes that accumulate over time.Rather than prescribing specific meal plans, Sarah helps clients develop awareness of their own habits and make sustainable changes within their capabilities. The gut microbiome is crucial for immunity and digestion - both fermented foods (probiotics) and fiber-rich foods (prebiotics) are important for gut health.Simple changes made consistently can have profound effects - adding one healthy choice daily equals 365 positive inputs per year. How is your week going sis? I am in baseball mom mode over here. Yep, this past weekend we geared up for another season of travel baseball!  I never thought I'd actually feel proud wearing bright yellow, as it's not really "my color"....(lol, Go Pirates!), but it sure was fun over the weekend spectating, screaming & living life in the present moment. When I sat down to bring content to you on the podcast today, I thought I MUST share all about identity. I recorded this one during last baseball season and it fits perfectly with my spring ball vibes! I was reminded of all the years that being outside of my normal weekend routine would have completely thrown me for a loop. I remembered how "tied" & "chained" I felt. I remembered how I wasn't able to enjoy the moments because I was consumed with thoughts about food. Thoughts like, "when can I eat next? what am I allowed to have? haven't I already had too much today? I guess I'll save my calories for later", & God forbid I went to a sporting event....I would have ordered a diet coke, secretly wanting a bite of anything other than my chewing gum, yet never allowing myself one. I probably would have spent majority of the game wondering how other people around me could even take one bite of their hotdog.  I lived paralyzed by shame, guilt and fear. Maybe you can relate. What I came to find out, was that the only way I was ever going to escape my mind, was to realize it had been hijacked. I had to realize that I was not my anorexia. I didn't cause it. I couldn't control it. I couldn't cure it.  BUT....I could no longer contribute to the patterns and the behaviors that were keeping me chained to it. In order to do just that.....I had to separate myself FROM my ED. In Episode 200.5, I share with you the importance of separating yourself from your eating disorder. I ask you questions for you to challenge yourself this week. Yep, you won't want to miss this one girl! Bring a notebook & a pen & listen in! And remember...YOU my sweet friend may have a disordered relationship with food, but you are NOT disordered. You are not broken! You are healing. Crops and sustainable aviation fuel—probably not something you think about every day. Alice Henry, co-founder of Regenrate, took a deep dive into why cover crops, which provide amazing benefits to farmers and farmland, are not more widely used. No big surprise—it's about the money. Planting cover crops costs money, and the business model of carbon credits isn't enough to nudge farmers.Enter the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market, where there is both money and massive demand due to changing European and global regulations. That means working with big oil majors and helping fossil fuel giants decarbonize. But aviation, in particular, needs to decarbonize quickly. We're not flying any less—probably more—and electric aircraft are coming, but not fast enough and in too limited a capacity.Enter non-food and non-feed competing cover crops, grown on land that would otherwise be bare, keeping more living roots in the ground for much more of the year. Regenrate aims to turning cover cropping from a cost into a revenue-generating practice.More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/alice-henry.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. Beyond Food Franchises: Exploring Non-Food Opportunities While food franchises are undeniably our most popular category, franchising extends far beyond the realm of food. Over the years, we've featured numerous exceptional franchises in the service industry. These businesses, though often highly profitable, present unique marketing challenges. Our podcast begins with a discussion inspired by Dr. Martin J. McDermott's LinkedIn article, "You Had Me at Hello: The Power of the Follow-Up." This piece highlights the critical role of post-service communication in fostering customer loyalty. Using compelling anecdotes—like a dentist's thoughtful follow-up call or a repairman's check-in after servicing a refrigerator—Dr. McDermott underscores how small gestures can leave a lasting impact. He also introduces the RATER model (Reliability, Assurance, Tangibles, Empathy, Responsiveness) as a framework for assessing service quality, emphasizing how even brief interactions can strengthen customer relationships. Drawing from his expertise as a marketing professor and franchising authority, he concludes by celebrating the often-overlooked importance of a simple greeting and timely follow-up. Next, we sit down with Jon Ostenson, a consultant, entrepreneur, and author specializing in non-food franchising. As a former Inc. 500 Franchise President and multi-brand franchisee, Jon offers invaluable perspectives on this sector. We explore insights from his latest book, Non-Food Franchising: The Better Path to Franchise Ownership. Finally, in the second segment of the episode, we feature an excerpt from our celebrated podcast series, Great Quotes in Franchising.

#131: Farmer Mark Kimball and his wife, author Kristin Kimball, almost everything that's been in their heads recently, as their journey at their year-round, CSA-model farm in Essex, New York continues to evolve. Dave caught up with the Kimballs at the NOFA New Hampshire Conference last February, where they all discussed the future of food production, late-stage capitalism, and the organic movement. Mark Kimball founded Essex Farm in 2003, along with his wife Kristin. With deeply diversified crops and offerings, Essex Farm utilizes a radical model of community-supported agriculture to share a full diet of year-round food  (vegetables, meat, dairy, grains, and maple) at affordable prices to its membership.  Kristin Kimball founded Essex Farm in 2003 along with her husband Mark, and wrote a breakout book about their experience - The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love, followed by Good Husbandry: Growing Food, Love, and Family, on Essex Farm. She continues to farm, write and speak. https://www.instagram.com/essexfarmcsa/To watch a video version of this podcast please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/mark-kristin-kimball-holistic-farming-beyond-food-episode-one-hundred-thirty-oneThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Simon takes us back through his unusually creative culinary journey to becoming an award winning social entrepreneur. You'll hear some entertaining stories about childhood in northern England where he would run home from school to bake and cook just to avoid doing his homework. And learn about his serendipitous selection, out of hundreds candidates, to be the only apprentice sent for training, at 17 year old no less, to London's famed The Savoy Hotel. A dream come true! In the back of his mind he always felt there was more to life than preparing food for wealthy people in a luxurious hotel. After years in the kitchen at various locations, as well as a short stint in corporate America, he eventually founded Beyond Food Foundation and Brigade Bar + Kitchen. This empowered him to make a social impact, working to help homeless people across London. Beyond Food was set up to help rebuild their lives by sharing his cooking skills and knowledge around food. He will tell you he has truly seen first-hand the real power of food as a catalyst to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Since 2005, Beyond Food has helped the lives of many struggling people every year. We hope you enjoy this fun and inspiring story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
