British distance runner Laura Weightman announced her retirement from Athletics last month. Although it came much sooner than she would have liked, it gave Laura the opportunity to chat through the 5 moments that defined her career. A career that included many highlights - 3 Top 8 placings at a global championships, 2 medals over 1500 metres at the European Championships and also 2 Commonwealth medals, including one at 5000 metres. Coached throughout her career by 1983 World Champion and BBC commentator Steve Cram, the athlete from the North East made a name for herself at the London 2012 Olympic Games. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura was denied the chance to compete at her third Olympics in 2020, when in peak shape. A serious of injuries curtailed her career, but there are plenty of highlights to reflect on as Laura tells us her 5 defining moments.

In this special episode of The Warm Up Track, we're joined by some of the stars of the very first World Athletics Championships as the event prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary. 1500m gold medallist Steve Cram explains how important the '83 Worlds were, at a time when the Olympic Games was beset by political boycotts. He also outlines plans by Athletics' world governing body, the IAAF, to make the World Championships their equivalent of the FIFA World Cup and make the Olympics track and field's second tier competition for under-23s only. Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, who won sprint relay bronze, describes a Jamaica team where you had to bring a sewing kit to make adjustments to the vest and shorts you'd been given. She also recalls how all of the teams stayed in university halls of residence, and how the cafeteria was the place to be, a real melting pot of nations where life-long friendships were made. Jamaica's first World Champion Bert Cameron says that, as he received his 400m gold, he saw his life in flashback – leaving him with the belief that God had given him his talent to lift his family out of poverty. While Arto Bryggare, whose 110m hurdles silver was host nation Finland's first medal of the Championships, recalls how he took time to speak with his team-mate Tiina Lilak during his lap of honour to say “stop playing, start throwing”. Lilak was involved in the Javelin final, and would go onto win gold that same night. Arto was in doping control when he heard the crowd “exploding” as she claimed the win. As for Arto, he says the silver is “the number one thing” in his career because it was a medal of “standing the pressure”. For those of us that lived through his achievements in real time, it's easy to close my eyes and be taken right back to the moment when Seb Coe lined up in the final of the 1500m at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.Middle-distance running took on almost rock'n'roll stature at the time in Britain, as Steve Ovett, Steve Cram & Seb Coe dominated both the centre piece events of 800 & 1500 breaking world records at every turn.We all got up in the middle of the night to watch that final, and be exhilarated by that truly epic last lap. But why am I reminiscing about that now, well TCD has just come around that final bend with Ant & myself doing a very good impression of Steve & Seb at their peak.Love'n'klaxons,hMens 1500m Final - 1985 LA Olympics TCD Merch StoreBecome Purple and support the showThe Invisible Man Volume 1: 1991-1997The Invisible Man Volume2: 1998-2014FacebookInstagramWebsite

Episode 35 is an interview with John Steele, currently Executive Director of Sport at Loughborough University. Through the years, John has had some powerful sporting positions including CEO of organisations like the RFU and UK Sport. He's been an army officer, an athlete, a coach, and as well as his role at Loughborough he's also Chairman of The English Institute of Sport. We talk about the sporting system, creating high-performance environments, and how you go about maintaining a leadership focus when you have so many competing pressures. John Steele has a unique blend of experience in creating and leading high performing teams, developed as a professional sports coach and Chief Executive in the private, public, and not for profit sectors. He served as an army officer having been trained at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to lead teams in high pressure environments. On leaving the army he worked in the corporate world before becoming a professional rugby player. On finishing a playing career that spanned over 400 first class games, including matches against Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, John turned to coaching and successfully led Northampton Saints to become European Champions. He became Executive Director on the Saints Board during a period of unprecedented off field growth including a share issue and stadium development. Johns experience in rugby union also saw him serve on the England Rugby Board during the successful world cup campaign of 2003 and be appointed as CEO of the Rugby football Union. The winning of the bid for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics saw John take up post as CEO of UK Sport, which he led for a six year period through Beijing and into London. His Team GB involvement spans nine different Games including the record breaking Rio Olympics and Paralympics, and the recent winter Games in Pyeongchang. Having served as Group Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, he is now leading an ambitious change programme as Executive Director of Sport at Loughborough University.
