27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei : Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te : quid ergo erit nobis? 28 And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.Jesus autem dixit illis : Amen dico vobis, quod vos, qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione cum sederit Filius hominis in sede majestatis suae, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, judicantes duodecim tribus Israel. 29 And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.Et omnis qui reliquerit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, et vitam aeternam possidebit St Sylvester, an Itialian nobleman, founded the Congregation of the Sylvestrines, affiliated to the Benedictine Order. He died at the age of ninety A.D. 1267.

The Emperor Maximian assembled learned men to bring her to the worship of idols, but they were converted to Christianity. Maximian then ordered her to be beheaded after many cruel torments, A.D. 305.

St Gertrude, born in 1256 in Germany, was a Benedictine abbess celebrated for her revelations concerning the Sacred Heart. Her writings are very important for mystical theology. She died A.D. 1334.

The seraphic St Teresa, born at Avila (Spain) at the age of 18, entered the convent of St Mary of Mt Carmel. As the Reformer of the Carmelites, she re-established the primitive observance of their ancient Rule. On account of her invaluable works on mystical Theology, she may be considered one of the greatest Doctors of the Church. She died A.D. 1582.

After the death of his wife, St Francis, Duke of Gandia and Viceroy of Catalonia, renounced his high position in order to enter the Society of Jesus. He was the Third General of his Order and died at Rome A.D. 1572.

But he was silent.Et ait illi : Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem? At ille obmutavit. 13 Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.Tunc dicit rex ministris : Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores : ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi. Parable of the marriage guests. All men are called to the heavenly beatific union, but few are chosen: those who wear the nuptial robe of baptism and of the state of grace.

See that ye be not troubled. For these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.Audituri enim estis praelia, et opiniones praeliorum. Videte ne turbemini : oportet enim haec fieri, sed nondum est finis : 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be pestilences, and famines, and earthquakes in places:consurget enim gens in gentem, et regnum in regnum, et erunt pestilentiae, et fames, et terraemotus per loca : 8 Now all these are the beginnings of sorrows.haec autem omnia initia sunt dolorum. 9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall put you to death: and you shall be hated by all nations for my name's sake.Tunc tradent vos in tribulationem, et occident vos : et eritis odio omnibus gentibus propter nomen meum. 10 And then shall many be scandalized: and shall betray one another: and shall hate one another.Et tunc scandalizabuntur multi, et invicem tradent, et odio habebunt invicem. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall seduce many.Et multi pseudoprophetae surgent, et seducent multos. 12 And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold.Et quoniam abundavit iniquitas, refrigescet caritas multorum : 13 But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved.qui autem perseveraverit usque in finem, hic salvus erit. St Janaurius, Bishop of Beneventum, was beheaded with his Companions: Acutuis, Eutychius, Desiderius, Festus, Proculus and Socius , at Puteoli, in the persecution of Diocletian A.D. 305. St Januarius is the patron of Naples, where year by year the liquefaction of his blood, preserved in a phial, takes place.

St Cornelius, the successor of St Fabian, Pope and Martyr, was one of the greatest popes of the third century. He was beheanded A.D. 253. St Cyprian, a barrister, and later bishop of Carthage and Primate of Africa, wrote works which are among the most precious documents of the Catholic Church. He suffered martyrdom A.D. 258.

Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee.Sed cum vocatus fueris, vade, recumbe in novissimo loco : ut, cum venerit qui te invitavit, dicat tibi : Amice, ascende superius.
