It's Casual Friday! Sam is joined by Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, he is joined by MR alum extraordinaire Jamie Peck to discuss what exciting things she has coming up. And THEN, he's joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Sam runs through updates on Donald Trump's Georgia case and the GOP's case against Fani Willis, Mitch McConnell's return to the Senate, national union action, the end of another COVID support program, and the Texas Supreme Court upholding a ban on trans-affirming care for minors, before watching UAW President Shawn Fain rail against the “policy failure” that is the existence of billionaires. Heather Parton then joins as she and Sam work through the Georgia GOP's ongoing attempt to impeach Fulton County DA Fani Willis, Governor Brian Kemp's rejection of that, and why that might not help back the radicals down. Expanding on the far-right's role in the legislature, they then tackle Kevin McCarthy's ongoing debacle as he attempts to give his colleagues a baseless impeachment against Biden in exchange for NOT shutting down the entire government, and why they still want both, before quickly running through the NLRB's massive decision in a case against Cemex. They wrap up by more broadly assessing the state of Joe Biden and his administration heading into the 2024 election. Jamie Peck then dives into the upcoming debut of her variety show “The Woke Mob” with Jake Flores, this Saturday in New York, before parsing through the ongoing organizing and protest against Atlanta's Cop City, what Cop City is, and why – despite massive public disapproval for the project and over 100k signatures for a referendum – the Atlanta City Council is taking every chance to undermine attempts to stop the project. Matthew Film guy helps wrap up the program as he and Sam discuss the recent gift-giving debacle involving Ronald Raygun, the ongoing WGA-SAG strike, and gives his recommendations of the book-turned-movie Dogs of War and Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Wild Pear Tree. And in the Fun Half: Sam covers Tucker's flailing pivot to ‘X' and strong relationship with Hungary, Ed from Seattle discusses yesterday's interview's portion on Hannah Arendt, and Jack from Cleveland platforms Rudy Giuliani's legal fund. Michael in Miami expands the conversation on Rudy's troubles, plus, your calls and IMs! This week, Roqayah and Kumars are joined from the top of the hour by Aaron Thorpe, Jamie Peck and Jorge Rocha, hosts of the podcast Everybody Loves Communism. Aaron is a cohost of the Trillbilly Workers Party podcast and organizes with the Democratic Socialists of America in Atlanta, Jamie is a veteran of The Majority Report and the Antifada and organizes with North Brooklyn DSA, and Jorge is a NYC-based organizer with DSA and serves on the International Committee. Aaron, Jamie and Jorge open the proceedings by sharing stories of how they were radicalized before elaborating on some of the highlights from their regular discussions of Marxist theory and socialist history. The gang touches on two classical texts from Marx as well as the socialist feminism of Alexandra Kollontai, exploring the defining features of capitalism and how communists have broken with liberal conceptions of equality, including the relationship between socialism and liberation for women and queer folks. You can follow Aaron on Twitter @borgposting, Jamie @Jamie_Elizabeth and Jorge @LineGoesDown, and the show account @ELCPod, and you can find Everybody Loves Communism on Patreon and wherever you get your podcasts.

If you didn't enjoy Emily St. John Mandel's post-apocalyptic book Station Eleven, you're not alone—Lyta didn't like it either. However, the HBO Max mini-series, starring Mackenzie Rio Davis and Himesh Patel, brings a powerful, unique, and deeply human quality to St. John Mandel's story of a devastating global flu pandemic and societal collapse. In the latest installment of Art for the End Times, Lyta talks with writer and podcaster Aaaron Thorpe about why Station Eleven, an underrated and brilliant TV show in its own right, is one of the few contemporary examples of anticapitalist utopian storytelling.Aaron Thorpe is a writer and podcaster based in Atlanta, Georgia. Sam hosts Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to wrap up the week in news! And in the second half, Sam is joined by Jamie Peck, in her triumphant return to MR (!) and Jorge Rocha, co-hosts of the Everybody Loves Communism podcast! Jamelle starts off with a dive into his new 90's political-military thrillers podcast, before he and Sam get into the state of the Build Back Better bill, as it passes a House vote after a late night, in which Kevin McCarthy showed us why talking filibusters, while they force us to hear from some of the worst people, is drastically better than invoking cloture. Next, they get into the content of the bill, walking through the expansion in SALT deductions as an annoyingly large part of the $1.75 trillion package, as well as looking at the state of the Manchin and Sinema votes, and whether Democratic leadership successfully got rid of everything they didn't want, and included everything they did want. They also discuss the impact the passing of the bill is already having on the approval of the Democrats (other than Biden), and what this means heading into a midterm in which the GOP, simply by nature of re-gerrymandering borders, have picked up at least five very necessary seats. They wrap up the interview by touching on Bouie's recent piece for the NYT on structural racism, its relationship to capitalism's reliance on inequality, and what it would mean for remnants of racism in a truly restructured and redistributed society. Then, Jamie and Jorge hop on to discuss a variety of important audio projects they're working on, before getting into the state of the US's Democratic Socialist movement, and why, in the wake of the incredible leftist and abolitionist organizing that we saw with the George Floyd uprisings and COVID pandemic, the DSA has an essential task of taking a look outside of explicitly electoral organizing. Sam also covers John Kennedy misunderstanding comrade as a term of endearment in his fear-mongering during Saule Omarova's confirmation hearing. And in the Fun Half: After breaking down the announcement of the Rittenhouse decision, and the hypocrisy of the right screaming about being silenced when called racist, but being fully behind the murder of protesters. Next, Sam and the MR crew cover Kevin McCarthy's campaign to keep his house leadership position, centering the important issues of God and fentanyl in his country, Jordan Pederson reminds us that if you don't acknowledge structures, then no problem can structural, and Ben Shapiro says propaganda can't be animated. Greetings, Antifada super soldiers! This week, we're cross-posting an episode of Jamie's new show Everybody Loves Communism, wherein she and co-host Jorge do the reading so you don't have to. In this edition, Jamie and Jorge begin their mini-series on the Paris Commune as a prelude to chapter 3 of Lenin's "State and Revolution," because you need to know about it to understand that chapter. It's also just an important event in the history of class struggle; Marx called it "the dawn of the great social revolution which will liberate mankind from the regime of classes forever"(!) The content of the episode draws from Massacre: The Life and Death of the Paris Commune by John Merriman. New Yorker Review of the book: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/12/22/fires-paris Produced and Edited by Paul (@aufhebenkultur) Intro: Everybody Hates Chris theme song. Image: The Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning by Camille Pissarro Be sure to subscribe at fans.fm/everybodylovescommunism if you want to hear more, and sign up as a supporter if you're feeling generous. Patrons will be rewarded with a fun ep on "Succession" due out next week!
Jamie and Sean are joined by superproducer Paul Channelstrip (@aufhebenkultur) (Antifada twitch channel, Everybody Loves Communism, many more) for a laid back episode about the zoo, a high profile bird murder, and the tendency of the rate of treats to fall over time. Why is the supply chain having a normal one and what does it mean for the current phase of capitalism? In the pilot episode of Everybody Loves Communism, Jamie and Aaron discuss the first portion of Marx and Engels' seminal pamphlet "The Communist Manifesto" with the help of The Antifada's Sean KB (@as_a_worker). After situating the piece in its proper historical context, the crew discusses 'Chapter 1: Bourgeois and Proletarians,' which goes over the differences between idealism and materialism, and why taking an idealist view of history benefits the ruling class.
