On today's edition of "Closer Look with Rose Scott," we bring you an exclusive interview with the now outgoing Inspector General for the City of Atlanta. This follows our series of interviews with Shannon Manigault about the challenges she says have emerged while investigating alleged corruption, abuse and fraud within city government. During a press conference Monday morning, Manigault claims her investigations have been hindered, she’s faced bullying, and her family has been targeted. In stepping away from her position, this leaves behind dozens of open investigations into Atlanta government officials which she describes as “serious.” Her announcement also comes just before the Atlanta City Council is expected to vote on legislation that would limit the control of the inspector general’s office. Today, Manigault speaks only to “Closer Look” to discuss her decision and why she says there was never a pathway to compromise in working with city officials.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Day Three, we reflect on why John Lewis decided to run for public office for both the Atlanta City Council and the U.S. Congress, and the kind of reputation he earned as a politician in Washington.

Gas prices are dropping across the nation (you won't hear that on Fox News) but in Georgia, they'll creep back up a few pennies with the expiration of Kemp's gas tax. Let's take a brief review on "how we got here" with pump prices. Wednesday we heard Georgia Senate subcommittee testimony so on this episode, we'll eavesdrop on the House version. Not that it mattered' much like Atlanta City Council ignored the overwhelming testimony against "Cop City," Georgia GOP legislators were always going to do what they wanted to, regardless. This has "special master" written all over it. A class-action lawsuit in Georgia echoing one in Missouri may alter the residential real estate industry with sellers thinking they're saving money fighting what some see as "inflated" commission rates, but hear me (a realtor) out. This is likely to result in a housing market plunge. I'll explain ... On the passing of Henry Kissinger, I invited my good friend, author, historian and Coker University professor of sociology Mal Hyman on to help me review Kissinger's legacy. Always an enlightening conversation with Mal.

It's Casual Friday! Sam is joined by Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, he is joined by MR alum extraordinaire Jamie Peck to discuss what exciting things she has coming up. And THEN, he's joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Sam runs through updates on Donald Trump's Georgia case and the GOP's case against Fani Willis, Mitch McConnell's return to the Senate, national union action, the end of another COVID support program, and the Texas Supreme Court upholding a ban on trans-affirming care for minors, before watching UAW President Shawn Fain rail against the “policy failure” that is the existence of billionaires. Heather Parton then joins as she and Sam work through the Georgia GOP's ongoing attempt to impeach Fulton County DA Fani Willis, Governor Brian Kemp's rejection of that, and why that might not help back the radicals down. Expanding on the far-right's role in the legislature, they then tackle Kevin McCarthy's ongoing debacle as he attempts to give his colleagues a baseless impeachment against Biden in exchange for NOT shutting down the entire government, and why they still want both, before quickly running through the NLRB's massive decision in a case against Cemex. They wrap up by more broadly assessing the state of Joe Biden and his administration heading into the 2024 election. Jamie Peck then dives into the upcoming debut of her variety show “The Woke Mob” with Jake Flores, this Saturday in New York, before parsing through the ongoing organizing and protest against Atlanta's Cop City, what Cop City is, and why – despite massive public disapproval for the project and over 100k signatures for a referendum – the Atlanta City Council is taking every chance to undermine attempts to stop the project. Matthew Film guy helps wrap up the program as he and Sam discuss the recent gift-giving debacle involving Ronald Raygun, the ongoing WGA-SAG strike, and gives his recommendations of the book-turned-movie Dogs of War and Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Wild Pear Tree. And in the Fun Half: Sam covers Tucker's flailing pivot to ‘X' and strong relationship with Hungary, Ed from Seattle discusses yesterday's interview's portion on Hannah Arendt, and Jack from Cleveland platforms Rudy Giuliani's legal fund. In this episode we welcome on multiple activists and organizers involved in the struggle to stop cop city. For this discussion Kamau Franklin from Community Movement Builders, and Micah Herskind return to the podcast, and K from Unity and Struggle, and Matthew Johnson from the Stop Cop City Faith Coalition join them to talk about various facets of the movement to stop cop city current strategic and tactical questions and concerns. They each provide brief introductions during the show itself. We catch folks up on some of the important recent events in this struggle since our conversation on the movement last Fall. We discusss the repression of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, the use of domestic terrorism charges, and against firm and nearly unanimous public opposition the Atlanta City Council's recent allocation of the funding for the building of Cop City. We also get into the new referendum initiative and some of the tactical and strategic debates around that effort. Further all of our guests offer up multiple ways that people can get involved and plug into the struggle against cop city wherever they are. This week is a week of action in the struggle to Stop Cop City so we will include links with more information on ways people can get involved in that as well. In September 2021, the Atlanta City Council approved a proposal to lease 381 acres of the Weelaunee Forest—stolen Muscogee land surrounded by majority-Black neighborhoods—to the Atlanta Police Foundation to build the largest militarized police training center in the US. In response, a decentralized movement has risen up to halt the destruction of the forest and the construction of what has come to be known as “Cop City.” As the Stop Cop City movement has grown, the state has employed increasingly draconian methods of repression. In January of this year, police killed Manuel “Tortuguita” Téran, a 26-year old Indigenous Venezuelan forest defender. Dozens of people have been arrested for protesting, including a legal observer with the Southern Poverty Law Center, and more than 40 have been charged with domestic terrorism. Last month, a heavily armed joint task force raided a community center and arrested three bail fund organizers living there under tenuous allegations of “money laundering” and “charity fraud.” And despite widespread opposition, the Atlanta City Council recently authorized an additional $30 million contribution to the construction of Cop City, bringing the city's pledged total to $67 million. On this week's episode of On the Nose, culture editor Claire Schwartz is joined by three guests in Atlanta deeply engaged with Stop Cop City—Micah Herskind, a community organizer and writer; Keyanna Jones, a reverend and organizer; and Josie Duffy Rice, a writer who covers criminal justice—to discuss the movement's roots and tactics, and what the militarization of Atlanta can teach us about the economic underpinnings of fascism. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Transcript forthcoming.Further Reading and Listening: “The Fight Against Cop City,” Amna Akbar, Dissent“Shmita Means Total Destroy,” Fayer Collective, Jewish Currents“This is the Atlanta Way: A Primer on Cop City,” Micah Herskind, Scalawag“Atlanta Is Trying to Crush the Opposition to ‘Cop City' by Any Means Necessary,” Hannah Riley, The Nation “Targeting bail funds and Stop Cop City activists is an old tactic,” Say Burgin and Jeanne Theoharis, Washington Post“‘Multiple Grammars of Struggle'...

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent decisions regarding labor and environmental regulation by the Supreme Court. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine's defensive, DeSantis' human trafficking schtick, Atlanta's City Council approving the Cop City funding in the face of mass public opposition, Oklahoma's funding of religious schools, SAG-AFTRA's strike, PGA's merger with a Saudi golf league, and the Quebec wildfires, before parsing through some of yesterday's best speeches in front of the Atlanta City Council. Mark Joseph Stern then dives right into assessing last month's Sackett v. EPA decision in which the Supreme Court unanimously curtailed the Clean Water Act's wetland protections, going in and effectively rewriting Congress' provision protecting wetlands “adjacent” to protected bodies of water in favor of only those with surface connections – less than 50% of those originally protected. Stern, Sam, and Emma go on to tackle this decision's relationship to the Chevron doctrine, going beyond simply undermining vague delegations of power to governmental agencies and completely editing out explicit Congressional approval of agency power. Next, Mark Joseph Stern parses through the Court's 8-1 decision on Glacier NW vs. Teamsters, siding against employees' right to strike, in favor of protecting minimal property damage that the strikers made an active effort to prevent, as Stern walks Sam and Emma through the overriding of clear precedent and the power of the NLRB in this decision. Wrapping up, Mark explores why the Supreme Court's decisions in June aren't likely to get better. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Cornell West's entrance into the Presidential race with the People's Party, discuss Twitter's continuing debacle around their TwitterFiles, and parse through the mystery deal between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kevin McCarthy to get the debt ceiling deal done. They also dive into Florida's virulently anti-immigrant SB-1718 and the impact its passing has had, Mario in Georgia dives into DeSantis' military comments, Kai from New Jersey discusses his state's elections, and William from LA discusses the importance of diverse news sources. Eileen Dong is a lived-experience consultant, TEDx speaker and author on gender-based violence, its intersections, gender equality, as well as culturally & linguistically responsive care and diversity & inclusion. She is the Executive Director of Hope Pyx Global, a non-profit organization dedicated to victims of human trafficking, sexual assault, and domestic violence. Eileen is also a linguist & expert witness for HSI, ICE, DOJ, FBI, US Attorney's Office, USCIS. Dong endured polyvictimization while her family was 8,000 miles away in China. Being on the Texas Human Trafficking Survivor Leader Council and United Nations Board, her long-term vision is to build shelters and to change the culture for a world free from violence, exploitation, and slavery. Ms. Dong's merits have been recognized by various government officials, such as the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, the United States Congress Special Congressional Recognition, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and the Atlanta City Council. Sylvester Turner, Mayor of Houston, proclaimed January 19th as Eileen Dong Day. Hope Pyx Global is a survivor-led 501(c)3 dedicated to victims/survivors (and their families) of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, and any other gender-based violence. We serve people from all backgrounds including BIPOC/AAPI, MMIP/W, veterans, men/boys, LGBTQ, people with disabilities, immigrants/refugees & marginalized communities. In Atlanta, Georgia, community activists remain locked in a nearly 2-year struggle against the development of a massive police training center in a forest just outside the city, dubbed "cop city." Only weeks after George Floyd's murder in 2020 and the 2020 police killing of Rayshard Brooks, calls to "demilitarize" and "defund the police" amassed all over the country. It was difficult for Atlanta, as it was for many cities across the country. The city's 14 percent increase in homicides was accompanied by several, tragic, high-profile murders just as the voters were facing a choice of who would serve as the next mayor. The race and runoff were dominated by these public perceptions of crime and questions about how candidates would respond became central. In September 2021, the Atlanta City Council approved plans to grant a ground lease to the Atlanta Police Foundation for a $90 million dollar police training facility to be built on 85 acres of land near Southeast Atlanta, located in a lower-income, predominantly Black area not represented on Atlanta's City Council. A local firm conducted a survey of residents near the proposed site and found 98% of respondents opposed the project. The approval was also granted despite strong opposition from community groups who oppose this substantial allocation of public resources to Atlanta police. Additionally, the land slated for development has a fraught history, having formerly served as the Old Atlanta Prison Farm where inmates were subjected to abusive, "slave-like" conditions. Digital producer Zachary Bynum reports from Atlanta, talking with activists, organizers, and elected officials from the city to determine what this all means about policing, land stewardship, and power in the struggle for the future of Atlanta's South River Forest. Editor's note: We reached out to the Atlanta Police Foundation for comment and we have not yet received a response. If we do, we will post it here.
