Considered one of the greatest anime films of the 90s, we talk about its exploration of early internet culture, its poignant observations of mass surveillance, and Kon's editing styles, splicing through the film's various timelines, give the viewer a profound sense of unease. Aaron Thorpe returns to talk about GATTACA (1997) with us, a film that asks: what would society look like if it believed in genetic determinism?
“In an alternate universe, successful African-Americans live in gated communities, while impoverished Caucasians populate crime-ridden inner-city ghettos. When African-American mogul Thaddeus Thomas (Harry Belafonte) wrongly accuses Caucasian Louis Pinnock (John Travolta) of being a Peeping Tom, Pinnock loses his job and watches as his family falls apart. In a desperate attempt to repair his life, Pinnock takes Thomas hostage and demands reinstatement at the factory where he once worked.” Sign up at http://patreon.com/miniondeathcult for $5/month and get 2 bonus episodes a week Subscribe to our youtube channel at http://youtube.com/miniondeathcult

Then we discuss the film's take on the messy narrative contrivance of time-travel, how it attends to its bleak vision of a futureless future, and how some modern time travel narratives help reveal a sliver of hope in the film's tragic determinism. A preview of the latest bonus episode. Get access to it and hours and hours of bonus content by signing up at the $5 level. *You're gonna be noticing more paywalled content going forward. As much as I want more people to listen for free, recent changes in my life require me to start pushing the Patreon more. Unfortunately, this means the occasional passive aggressive addenda like this one reminding you, dear listener, that I have been doing this show alone for almost 4 years and I get no sponsorships or outside help. I rely on normal people like you to keep going so if you can donate, please do! It will make a big difference for me and let me keep making this content.*

If you didn't enjoy Emily St. John Mandel's post-apocalyptic book Station Eleven, you're not alone—Lyta didn't like it either. However, the HBO Max mini-series, starring Mackenzie Rio Davis and Himesh Patel, brings a powerful, unique, and deeply human quality to St. John Mandel's story of a devastating global flu pandemic and societal collapse. In the latest installment of Art for the End Times, Lyta talks with writer and podcaster Aaaron Thorpe about why Station Eleven, an underrated and brilliant TV show in its own right, is one of the few contemporary examples of anticapitalist utopian storytelling.Aaron Thorpe is a writer and podcaster based in Atlanta, Georgia. A tweet that recently went viral on Twitter had us wondering whether there is a backlash to the backlash on West Wing, and if so, why? Have the awful quality of and the damage caused by the West Wing been overstated? We're going to discuss the topic with Aaron Thorpe, Josh Olson, Dave Anthony and Luke Savage. Basically, the story is that last week Aaron Thorpe wrote this tweet about Jen Psaki saying West Wing inspired her to enter politics, where he blamed West Wing standom for so much of our bad current political climate: https://twitter.com/paradoomer/status/1496221105274634243. What was surprising was how angry and defensive people got, and it wasn't even just centrist liberal types. Even a lot of irony twitter looking accounts were suddenly acting very normie-ish and defensive of the show based on some of the responses that tweet got. The narratives weren't even always consistent. Many people complained that the problem was that leftists like Aaron were inventing a strawman by blaming the West Wing for awful people entering politics, even though he linked to an article of Psaki explicitly crediting the show with being the reason she entered politics. (An example is here, where this person says no one outside of leftist twitter even cares about West Wing, ignoring the fact that Psaki herself was the one who brought up West Wing and she's not part of leftist Twitter https://twitter.com/bidenbrunch/status/1496681071978725378?s=20&t=SADBiS21sopvVAL13e3Y4A). Another popular narrative was that Aaron was being "too online" and needed to "touch grass" despite the fact that he was citing something Psaki said in the real world (https://twitter.com/opinion_left/status/1496560154606813188?s=20&t=SADBiS21sopvVAL13e3Y4A). I'm not going to list all the weird bad faith arguments but you can get a sense of them from this sample of quote tweets: https://twitter.com/paradoomer/status/1496221105274634243/retweets/with_comments. Anyway, what interested us wasn't to simply litigate yet again how badly the West Wing sucks. We're more interested in discussing the backlash to the backlash. In a world where people are even waking up to the fact that Lin Manuel Miranda and Hamilton suck, one of the worst things Sorkin inspired, why are so many people, some of them even seeming to be irony posters or young people of color (one example I shared above was a 20 year old Black woman) being so damn defensive and angry about the show. Has the Sorkin backlash gone too far to the point where a pushback to the pushback is now necessary as a corrective? Or is this a sign that the scorn has not gone for enough? Show and weigh in! What is “apocalypse” and is it always a bad thing? This week we talk with Aaron Thorpe of the Trillbilly Worker's Party podcast about maintaining a positive vision of the future despite all signs to the contrary. In addition to reflecting on apocalyptic fiction like Children of Men and Station Eleven, we consider how the “end of the world” shapes our vision of what's possible. This week, we're joined by Aaron from The Trillbillies Podcast to talk about a recent essay he wrote about nostalgia, gritty reboots, hauntology, and the inability to conceive of any kind of future, let alone one that might actually be better. We talk about how and why reboots fail to capture any kind of contemporary moment in the age of content, and why this has also led to a situation where shows about teenagers, and ostensibly *for* teenagers, are actually geared toward and discussed by people in their 30s, trying to re-imagine their teen years. We also talk about what's been going on with Facebook recently, its weird swathes of viral content which make zero sense, and why going on Facebook is very much like the early stages of a stroke. -------- You can read Aaron's essay and subscribe to his substack here: https://spacelight.substack.com/p/what-may-have-been --------

Spread by a Michigan Republican Party official, and exhaustedly denied by the superintendent of schools, reactionary parents latched on to this fake new front in identity politics/culture war (not) happening on school campuses. Writer and podcaster Aaron Thorpe joins us (for once) firmly in the 21st century to discuss the 'The Matrix Resurrections', the divisive latest entry in the franchise. We examine director Lana Wachowski's incisive commentary on the commodification of revolutionary ideas, her vision of a less overt- but more insidiously oppressive- system of control, and the ways in which the film challenges the neoliberal hegemony of modern blockbusters through its subversive modes of storytelling. Jamie is joined by pal-of-the-show Aaron Thorpe (@paradoomer) to discuss Lizzie Borden's 1983 feminist sci-fi film "Born In Flames." Ten years after a "war of liberation" that established a social democratic government in the United States, things are still not great for women, especially queer, black, working class women! In a story that remains relevant to this day, the film follows the radical organizers of the Women's Army as they fight for true equality. Outro song - "Born In Flames," Red Krayola
