Wilhelmina – Mina – Smallman is an activist who campaigns for the safety of women and girls and police reform. She is a former teacher and priest who was the first woman of colour to be an archdeacon in the Church of England.In 2020 her daughters Bibaa and Nicole were murdered as they celebrated Bibaa's 46th birthday in Fryent Country Park. It later came to light that two policemen, who were guarding the crime scene, had posed for and posted selfies with Bibaa and Nicole's bodies in the background. They were later jailed for misconduct. When friends first reported her daughters missing the police didn't launch an official search for them and it was their loved ones who eventually found Bibaa and Nicole. Mina's anger at the failings of the Metropolitan Police, led her to start her fight for justice. In 2021 an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) report, highlighted the Met's failings and advised the force to apologise to Mina and her family.Mina was brought up in London. She was a drama teacher for over 20 years before training for the priesthood. She was ordained in 2006 and took up her first job as vicar at Christ Church on the Thames View estate in Barking. In 2013 she was appointed the first woman archdeacon of Southend in the Diocese of Chelmsford. She retired as an archdeacon in 2016. Jenny Sealey has been the artistic director of Graeae Theatre Company since 1997: Graeae is a deaf and disabled-led company and a leader and innovator in accessible theatre. Jenny has directed opera as well as plays, and was the co-director of the 2012 Paralympic opening ceremony. Jenny was born in Nottingham in 1963, the eldest of four sisters. She lost her hearing at the age of seven following a fall at school in which she banged her head. At that time, deaf children were not encouraged to use British Sign Language, and so she taught herself to lip read, and stayed in a mainstream school, although she often found it challenging. She also continued to take ballet lessons, helped by an inspirational teacher who encouraged her to follow the form and movements of the dancer in front of her. She went on to study dance and choreography at Middlesex Polytechnic.After graduation, Jenny worked as an actor before becoming the artistic director of Graeae. In 2022 she was awarded an OBE for services to disability arts. Most recently she returned to acting and toured the UK with Self Raising, her one-woman autobiographical play. Fredrich Kuhlau (1786–1832) was a Danish composer of the late Classical and early Romantic periods who wrote prodigiously for the flute.  The final movement of his Fantasie for Solo Flute in D major, "Arietta and Variations" is charming,  virtuosic, and fun! The aria "Bati, Bati"  from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni is the theme. Otto, de hoogbejaarde, laatste Habsburgse kroonprins, was dankbaar en geroerd bij de triomf waardoor zijn Hongaarse vaderland ging meedoen in een vrij Europa.1824 is voor Europa eens te meer een jaar om nu te vieren. Toen klonk op 7 mei in Wenen voor het eerst de Negende van Beethoven! Dat had nog heel wat voeten in de aarde, vertelt PG.In Amerika zijn er twee historische momenten die juist nu actueel en relevant zijn. Ten eerste een tragedie. Wie kan vergeten hoe in 1974 Richard Nixon ten onder ging? Het 'Smoking Gun' bandje van zijn gesprekken deed hem finaal de das om. En juist waar het in de Watergate-affaire om ging, gaat het nu ook in de vele zaken tegen Donald Trump om: 'cover ups', 'obstruction of justice', knoeien en verdoezelen.De triomf bij de presidentsverkiezing van 1984 zal ook volop in beeld zijn. De toen oudste president ooit zegevierde als bijna niemand eerder. Met argumenten waarmee Joe Biden nu ook wil pronken. Lukt het hem Ronald Reagans 'morning again in America' te evenaren?Voor Nederland is 2024 een waarin we terugkijken naar grote momenten in onze historie. Bovenal naar 1949. 75 jaar geleden kwam een einde aan het land zoals we dit sinds 1648 hadden gekend. Het koloniaal imperium werd opgedoekt en de toetreding tot de NAVO eindigde de politiek van neutraliteit en 'nationale soevereiniteit' die eeuwenlang domineerde. Nederland werd ingebed in een Europees en geopolitiek geheel, als waardengemeenschap en als verdedigingsalliantie tegen tirannie. Nu actueler dan ooit.In 1994 begon ook een nieuw tijdperk. Dat van de paarse jaren met Wim Kok als premier. Nu zien we scherper dat toen ook de opmars van versplintering en populisme zich aandiende. En met dit begin kreeg ook de loopbaan van Geert Wilders een opmerkelijke impuls. Hij bleek toen al een consistente politiek te volgen - als een Orbán voordat Orbán zelf dat pad insloeg!Ook Europees kijken we terug naar momenten van tragedie en triomf. In 1974 dumpte het Kremlin Nobelprijswinnaar Aleksandr Solzjenitsyn door hem in een vliegtuig naar Frankfurt te zeten. De Sovjetleiding hoopte van zijn verzet en inspiratie af te zijn, een fatale denkfout. Ook dit is nu weer hoogst actueel. Waarom Frankfurt? Dat was te danken aan bondskanselier Willy Brandt. Een gul gebaar naar de grote schrijver was zijn laatste mooie moment in 1974. Brandts politieke ondergang was een ongekende tragedie.2024 is in kunst en cultuur zonder twijfel een groot herdenkingsjaar. Op 3 juni 1924 stierf Franz Kafka. En heel recent kwam weer een uniek aspect van zijn werk aan het licht. De schrijver blijkt ook een fascinerend tekenaar. En zijn leven wordt nu zelfs een filmserie!1824 is het geboortejaar van Anton Bruckner. Het Concertgebouworkest zal daarom uitpakken met een cyclus van zijn grootse negen symfonieën onder een reeks bijzondere dirigenten. Bruckners werk is immers het hart van het repertoire van dit orkest en zijn traditie.En natuurlijk 1724! 300 jaar geleden klonk in Londen de première van een van de meest flitsende en politieke opera's: 'Giulio Cesare in Egitto' van Georg Friedrich Händel. Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Italian for 'Julius Caesar in Egypt'); HWV 17, commonly known as Giulio Cesare, is a dramma per musica (opera seria) in three acts composed by George Frideric Handel for the Royal Academy of Music in 1724. Jenny Beavan has won three Oscars for her costumes for the films Room with a View, Mad Max: Fury Road and Cruella, and has received nine further Academy Award nominations. She was born in London, and her parents were both professional musicians who encouraged her to paint, draw and learn a musical instrument. After studying theatre design, she was invited at the age of just 21 to create the sets for a production of Carmen at the Royal Opera House, conducted by Sir Georg Solti. She also worked on the costumes, which eventually led to her current career. Her credits now include more than 60 films and television series, including a long collaboration with the Merchant Ivory team, on titles such as Howards End and Remains of the Day, as well as Room with a View. Her costumes range from precise period recreations, in films such as The King's Speech, to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max and the extravagant 1970s-inspired gowns for Emma Stone and Emma Thompson in Cruella. There are a lot of things that have changed the world. The Roman Empire, the Age of Sail, the printing press, etc. But cotton usually doesn't make that list. The unassuming seed of the cotton plant, covered in white, wispy fibers perfect for spinning into cloth isn't usually considered a major player on the world stage. But in actuality, the industrialization behind the production of cotton textiles made massive changes to the very fabric (pun fully intended) of the modern world. La resurrezione (The Resurrection), HWV 47, is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, set to a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece (1652–1728). Capece was a court poet to Queen Marie Casimire of Poland, who was living in exile in Rome. It was first performed on Easter Sunday, 8 April 1708 at Rome, with the backing of the Marchese Francesco Ruspoli, Handel's patron at this time. The work details the events between — and during — Good Friday and Easter Sunday, with the action carried forward in recitative and exploration of character and delineation of mood taking place in the arias. Rinaldo (HWV 7) is an opera by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1711, and was the first Italian language opera written specifically for the London stage. The libretto was prepared by Giacomo Rossi from a scenario provided by Aaron Hill, and the work was first performed at the Queen's Theatre in London's Haymarket on 24 February 1711. The story of love, war, and redemption, set at the time of the First Crusade, is loosely based on Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered"), and its staging involved many original and vivid effects. Synopsis We tend to think of the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak as a 19th century composer – but he lived a few years into the 20th and one of his major works, his opera “Rusalka,” had its premiere in Prague on today's date in 1901. We also think of Dvorak as primarily a composer of symphonies and chamber works, but forget that in his final years, Dvorak devoted himself chiefly to opera – and for reasons that might surprise us today. In a 1904 interview, given just two months before his death, Dvorak said:  “Over the past five years I have written nothing but operas. I wanted to devote all my powers, as long as the dear Lord gives me health, to the creation of opera … because I consider opera to be the most suitable medium for the Czech nation and the widest audience, whereas if I compose a symphony I might have to wait years before it is performed.” Dvorak was gratified that his opera “Rusalka” was a big success at its 1901 premiere and would subsequently become one of his most popular works with Czech audiences, but ironically, outside Czech-speaking lands, most of his other operas, unlike his symphonies, are rarely performed.
