Paul Hankar, architecte belge, inventeur, avec Victor Horta et Henry van de Velde, de l'Art nouveau, conçoit avec son complice de toujours, le peintre-décorateur Adolphe Crespin, l'idée d'un « quartier moderne » qui pourrait être érigé sur le site de l'qui doit se tenir, à Bruxelles, trois ans plus tard. Dans « Le petit bleu du matin », nouveau quotidien de la capitale, ils publient un article pour présenter leur projet. En cette année 1894, Anvers vient d'accueillir son Exposition et la reconstitution d'un quartier Renaissance flamande à connu un énorme succès. Hankar et Crespin veulent s'inscrire en rupture de cette vision architecturale. Ils écrivent : « On a déjà pour Bruxelles proposé l'édification de vieux monuments de toutes sortes. Nous ne pensons pas qu'après Anvers la chose offrirait un intérêt bien transcendant … Soyons de notre époque : au lieu de regarder en arrière, voyons devant nous… Nous proposons donc la création (…) de tout un quartier non pas du seizième mais du dix-neuvième siècle… » Nos deux compères vont alors se retrouvés plongés au cœur d'une polémique qui va opposer les modernes aux tenants de l'architecture néo-historique. Chemin faisant, va se poser la question du rôle joué par les Expositions universelles dans la promotion de la modernité. Le dix-neuvième siècle était-il « condamné à finir sans avoir possédé une architecture à lui » se demandait l'architecte français Viollet-le-Duc ? It's a colossus of glass, metal, and stone with a location that makes all the other Paris monuments envious. Located between the Seine and the Champs-Élysées, the Grand Palais was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle world fair to showcase French art. Closed three years ago for its first complete renovation in history, it's getting a second lease of life for the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. FRANCE 24 takes you behind the scenes. Since its opening in 1900, variety has defined Paris's Grand Palais. From automobile fairs to agricultural events and horse competitions, its nave has seen dozens of events hosted under its majestic glass roof. And while it has held numerous commercial events, art has always been centre stage.During its 124-year history, wars have pressed pause on this vitality. During World War I, the Grand Palais was transformed into a military hospital. During World War II, it hosted two exhibitions in service to Nazi propaganda. But in the late 1940s, the nave returned to hosting exhibitions, with the first Renault 4L presented there, followed by the pressure cooker in the 1950s. After a few years of neglect, the nave was back in action for the FIAC (International Contemporary Art Fair) of 1977. A variety of events followed: carnivals, ice rinks, electronic music concerts and fashion shows. In 2017, Tour de France cyclists even crossed under its glass roof. For the Monumenta contemporary art exhibition, the nave was taken over by world-famous French and foreign artists: Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor and Daniel Buren, to name but a few. As part of the Art Paris contemporary art fair, Chinese photographer Li Wei flew under the glass roof, remaining weightless for 10 minutes for an iconic photo shoot.Make way for the OlympicsIn the summer of 2024, the nave of the Grand Palais will host Olympic fencing and taekwondo events, a first for this architectural gem. "Athletes and the public will take in a building that is one-of-a-kind in the world," Didier Fusillier, president of the Grand Palais, told us enthusiastically. "You have to imagine that, in the Grand Palais, you could fit the entire Palace of Versailles. This immensity will create the experience of an extraordinary Olympic event," he continued. But in order to organise the Olympics there and continue to use the Grand Palais, restoration work was essential. This vast project began in March 2021 and is expected to be completed in spring 2025.A renovation project facing daily challengesFour years of work, a budget of nearly €500 million and up to 1,000 workers on site every day are needed to renovate the building in record time, as the project's director Daniel Sancho explained to us. "We face technical challenges every day depending on the discoveries we make: lead, asbestos, and this slows down the construction," Sancho explained. Another challenge is the nave, with its 13,500 square metres of glass roof. When asked about insulation, Sancho smiled: "There is no insulation. We are in a greenhouse. In order to improve the comfort of the public, we have therefore decided to make the space comfortable at ground level. We have integrated a fluid-based heating system into the flooring: we circulate either cold water or hot water to achieve a reasonable level of comfort without having to heat the 450,000 cubic metres of the nave, which would be a waste of energy."Photographing the construction site to immortalise itFrench photographer and visual artist Marguerite Bornhauser was chosen by the Grand Palais in 2021 to capture the renovation project. The 35-year-old was given carte blanche to immortalise the work, which she calls an "endless" source of inspiration."Everything inspires me," she told us as she took us to the roof of the Grand Palais, which is usually inaccessible. "There are the aspects everyone knows about the Grand Palais, such as the wonderful nave and the immense size. And at the same time, I have an eye for detail, so I like the perks from the construction site – everything that falls to the ground, a glint of light – it's endless!”Bornhauser photographs these details with her digital and film cameras on the roof of the Grand Palais, in the nave, but also in the basement of the building, which she particularly loves. "The brightness from the construction site's neon lights is quite astonishing. It's spectacular, very theatrical. And I also find that it represents the workers' labour well. The men become a bit like shadows, there's a lot of chiaroscuro. It's dramatic actually with these lights falling like that, with these neon lights; the ceilings are lower, there are fewer colours, it's very, very different."In the coming months, Bornhauser will continue to photograph the construction site. Because while the work on the nave will be complete for the Olympics, it will continue in the rest of the Grand Palais until June 2025.

Pour faire connaître sa création, qu'elle nomme le corselet-gorge, la corsetière rentre en France et participe à l'Exposition universelle de 1889. La reine de l'événement sera cependant la tour Eiffel. Mais Herminie Cadolle persiste, elle dépose un brevet et remporte même la médaille de bronze à l'exposition universelle de 1900, à Paris. C'est le début du succès ! Herminie Cadolle ouvre une boutique rue Cambon et emploie plusieurs dizaines d'ouvrières. La communarde est devenue une cheffe d'entreprise ! Nous sommes à l'automne 1905, à Liège . C'est là, à l'Université, qu'entre le 30 septembre et le 02 octobre, quelques dizaines d'intellectuels, membres, ou non, du monde associatifs, se réunissent pour observer et évaluer la place de la Wallonie dans l'Histoire et ainsi la projeter dans l'avenir. Quelle est son identité ? Quel est le sentiment wallon dans la littérature, la musique, les arts en général ? Au-delà des ces questions, il s'agit aussi, pour les intervenants, de préparer un programme de « défense » contre ce qu'ils appellent « les exagérations flamingantes ». Initiateurs de l'événement, le libéral Julien Delaite et le professeur et écrivain, Oscar Colson, organisent, par exemple, un débat qui oppose Henri Pirenne, considéré comme l'inspirateur de l'école historique française dite École des Annales, proposant une histoire globale, et l'écrivain et militant wallon Hector Chainaye. Ce Congrès qui se tient dans le cadre de l'Exposition universelle de Liège, organisée à l'occasion du 75e anniversaire de l'indépendance de la Belgique, a-t-il porté ses fruits ? 2022 marks the bicentenary of César Franck, undoubtedly one of the most prolific composers in 19th century France. Of German ancestry, born in Liège, Belgium, he made his career in Paris. He left a substantial oeuvre of orchestral, choral and chamber music as well as pieces for piano and organ. He was one of the first musicians to take up the harmonic developments of Richard Wagner, and transformed them into his own unique musical language which in turn shaped the further development of French music. Among his most beautiful and poetic works are two sets of pieces written for the organ: Trois piéces and Trois chorals. The first set was written for the inauguration of the organ in the Palais du Trocadéro, built for the Exposition Universelle (or World's Fair) of 1878. La redécouverte de ces grandes feuilles exécutées par Georges Rémon, Eugène Morand et Alexandre Sandier, richement ornementées, nous plonge dans cette époque charnière de la fin du XIXe siècle à la recherche d'un style « nouveau » et pourtant toujours empreint de références au passé. Leur présentation met en lumière les projets qui auraient dû être réalisés en lieu et place de celui de l'architecte décorateur Georges Hoentschel, finalement désigné pour édifier le pavillon de l'Ucad pour l'Exposition universelle de 1900.Pour le concours, les dessins étaient anonymes, mais un indice devait permettre d'identifier les candidats une fois le choix du jury effectué. L'Ucad décerne le premier prix au projet nommé Pro Arte de Georges Rémon (1855-1931) et Eugène Morand (1853-1930). Elle attribue également une première prime à Alexandre Sandier (1843-1916) pour son projet symbolisé par une marguerite d'or, apposée sur le montage des dessins. Élève et neveu du dessinateur et architecte Eugène Prignot, Georges Rémon publie de nombreux recueils de décoration d'intérieur. Artiste protéiforme, plus connu dans le milieu du théâtre, Eugène Morand entre, quant à lui, à l'École des arts décoratifs en 1908 en tant que professeur de peinture décorative et en devient le directeur de 1910 à 1926. The 1893 World's Fair in Chicago was an opportunity for the United States to showcase its spectacular growth and signal its arrival as a world power, but it failed to highlight Black Americans' role in its development, and they took notice.  So when Paris hosted the Exposition Universelle in 1900, African Americans knew creating space to showcase their progress to the world was of major importance.  Among the exhibition's attendees was W.E.B. Et tu nous expliques ce midi Katell que la Tour Eiffel grandit …  Grandit ou rapetisse ça dépend des saisons … Déjà elle a grandi depuis sa construction … de 312 mètres à l'époque (Exposition Universelle de 1889) elle est passée à 324 mètres avec les antennes qui ont été rajoutées au sommet …  Mais surtout la Tour Eiffel change de taille en fonction des saisons ou plutôt des températures …  La charpente métallique de la tour Eiffel (on parle ici de 7.300 tonnes tout de même) réagit en fait à un phénomène physique appelé dilatation thermique.  Ce phénomène veut qu'à pression constante, le volume d'un corps augmente lorsque sa température augmente, et inversement.  Or toute la structure de l'édifice est faite en fer puddlé: un métal qui est très sensible à la chaleur et, donc, soumis aux variations qu'induit la dilatation thermique. Autrement dit, quand il fait chaud, en été principalement, la tour grandit, et quand il fait froid, quand l'hiver arrive, elle rétrécit ..  Donc dans les semaines qui viennent elle va diminuer … Evidemment ce n'est pas visible à l'œil mais ça représente quand même une différence d'une dizaine de centimètres … On estime que la tour Eiffel perd en hiver environ 10 centimètres, et gagne jusqu'à 20 centimètres lorsque l'été bat son plein et que les températures dépassent les 30°C.    Alors que la tour Eiffel prenne 10, 20 ou 30 centimètres sous l'effet de la chaleur ne semble pas être un problème de taille.  Elle va s'en remettre mais ce n'est sans doute pas le cas de tous les édifices construits par l'homme. Et certains vont sûrement payer cher le réchauffement climatique …

A lot was happening in Paris in 1900. But the two items I would like to focus on today were the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and the Inauguration of the Paris Metro. Paris had a lot to live-up to with the 1900 universal expo. After all the 1889 expo gave rise to the Eiffel Tower and how do you top that? In 1900 they had a pavilion on electricity and lots of gorgeous country pavilions that boasted the best of their respective countries, but what was exciting and new in Paris? The Paris Metro, of course! While not as glamorous and visible as the Eiffel Tower, the Paris Metro transformed the city and continues to be a central part of Parisian life. Book Recommendation: This week Annie read The Matchmaker of the Perigord by Julia Stuart. While not an earth-shattering read, it's pleasant and does not break any rules of life in France. They started thinking about adding a large transportation system in Paris in 1871 and there were several competing ideas. They wanted to have something operational by 1889 for the Paris Word Fair. Before they got to this inauguration, they went through a lot of proposals and opposing ideas being battled out in the newspapers. But the real issue was choosing the right metro technology for Paris. There is a lot to think about and those decision will impact life in the city for decades to come! 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Jules Verne - Book 1, Part 2 Title: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Overview: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (French: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers) is a classic science fiction adventure novel by French writer Jules Verne. The novel was originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's fortnightly periodical, the Magasin d'éducation et de récréation. A deluxe octavo edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou. The book was widely acclaimed on its release and remains so; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Its depiction of Captain Nemo's underwater ship, the Nautilus, is regarded as ahead of its time since it accurately describes many features of today's submarines, which in the 1860s were comparatively primitive vessels. A model of the French submarine Plongeur (launched in 1863) was figured at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, where Jules Verne examined it and was inspired by it when writing his novel. Issu de l’École nationale de Théâtre du Canada, cuvée 1997 où il rencontre Wajdi Mouawad, il crée pour lui les lumières de presque toutes ses créations dont, Incendies, Forêts, Seuls, Temps, Des femmes, Des Héroes, Sœurs, Le Dernier jour de sa Vie (Œuvres complète de Sophocle), Tous Des Oiseaux, Mort Prématurée d’un Chanteur Populaire Dans la Fleur de l’Âge et pour L’Enlèvement au Sérail à l’Opéra de Lyon et bientôt l’opéra Œdipe pour l’Opéra Bastille à Paris. Issu du milieu théâtral montréalais, il est rapidement invité à travailler pour les univers du cirque et de l’opéra. Il collabore ainsi à plusieurs reprises avec l'Opéra de Montréal pour le très acclamé Dead Man Walking de Jake Heggie, et Samson et Dalila tout deux dirigés par Alain Gauthier, pour Falstaff dirigé par David Gately, Aïda mis en scène par François Racine, pour Roméo et Juliette créé par Tom Diamond et plus récemment pour l’opéra contemporain Written On Skin de Martin Crimp. Minuet from Suite Bergamasque (1890-1905)                Claude Debussy (1862-1918) In 1889, Claude Debussy, already an accomplished and innovative composer, heard Javanese gamelan music at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, and soon changed Western music by demonstrating how music could be structured in scales and rhythms far removed from the rules then taught at the Paris Conservatoire. This piece was written for piano solo and arranged for oboe and harp or piano by the harpist Susan Jolles and the oboist Bert Lucarelli. Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1921)                           Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Camille Saint-Saëns wrote this joyful oboe sonata in a year of sadness at the end of his life, self-exiled in Algiers. Each of its three movements is a tone poem with its own mood and locale. The first movement, a Barcarolle, paints a watery scene. Opening calmly, the tempo increases like an afternoon sea breeze, then returns to calmness. The second movement suggests a solitary shepherd sounding a horn call across a magnificent valley, then piping a lilting Siciliano and closing with a farewell horn call. The finale is a Fandango, with sounds of frenzied castanets and the stamping boots of Spanish dancers.

It is believed to be the resting place of Egyptian God Osiris.       Eiffel Tower      Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.[1] The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.98 million people ascended it in 2011.[2] The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.[2]   Gustave Eiffel                                                                                The projected tower had been a subject of some controversy, attracting criticism from both those who did not believe that it was feasible and those who objected on artistic grounds,  Gustave Eiffel responded to these criticisms by comparing his tower to the Egyptian Pyramids: "My tower will be the tallest edifice ever erected by man. Will it not also be grandiose in its way? And why would something admirable in Egypt become hideous and ridiculous in Paris?   When construction of the tower began on the Champs de Mars, a group of 300 artists, sculptors, writers and architects sent a petition " that would dominate Paris like a "gigantic black smokestack."     Gustave Eiffel used latticed wrought iron to construct the tower to demonstrate that the metal could be as strong as stone while being lighter. Gustave Eiffel also created the internal frame for the Statue of Liberty. Construction of the Eiffel Tower cost 7,799,401.31 French gold francs in 1889.   The Eiffel Tower has 108 stories, with 1,710 steps. However, visitors can only climb stairs to the first platform. It is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, not including its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal, and its arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide.[1] The statue weighs 635 metric tons (625 long, 700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio   The statue was constructed in France because it was thought that at the time, the workers would not be capable of building a masterpiece such as this. It was transported, piece by piece, to Rio de Janeiro; the head alone is made up of 50 individual parts.    Portugal has its own replica of Christ the Redeemer in Almada. Built in 1959 and named “Christ the King” (Cristo-Rei), the statue stands 110 meters in height and offers some of the most beautiful views over Lisbon.

Von Guérard sailed into Milford Sound on the SS Otago on the evening of Monday 24 January 1876. The passengers on the eagerly anticipated four-and-a-half day voyage from Melbourne were not disappointed. Myriad waterfalls dashed down the steep sides of the granite peaks, following recent rain, and the clouds lifted to reveal Mitre Peak and Mt Pembroke – their towering forms reflected in the mirror-like surface of the fiord. The Otago dropped anchor by Bowen Falls at 7 pm. Von Guérard ‘at once had himself conveyed to an island’ where he executed sketches, and three drawings documented with notes on colour and vegetation, before the midsummer sun finally set.1From his chosen viewpoint he developed a panoramic composition of a series of pyramidal forms that stretch across the canvas, rising above the line of the water and reflected in it. Through the power and austerity of the composition, von Guérard communicates the monumental scale and geological age of the dark, angular rocky peaks, the depths of the fiord and the haunting silence of the Sound. His own personal experience is registered in the vignette of tiny figures seen disembarking from their rowboat. Their exhilaration at finding themselves in a place described by a journalist on the Otago as ‘unsurpassed, if equalled, by any cynosure of beauty on the earth’s surface’, is palpable.2 The intensity of von Guérard’s response to Milford Sound was informed by his scientific interest in its geology and vegetation.3 Contemporary reviewers, such as the writer for the Argus, who referred to ‘the steamer, floating like a child’s toy at the foot of one of the “awful cliffs”’, responded to Milford Sound in terms of the British Sublime.4 The Sublime played a part in von Guérard’s vision, but a more revealing context for understanding his portrayal of the subject is the scientific and specifically geological direction taken by German landscape painting in the early nineteenth century. Carus, in his Nine letters on landscape painting, argued for a new type of landscape art, one that revealed the history of the Earth’s formation through a scientifically accurate portrayal of its geology. In Milford Sound von Guérard observed and portrayed the hard, erosion-resistant character of the granite, gneiss and diorite rock formations and the vertical ridges of their foliated geological structure. The glacier at the top of Mt Pembroke – a flash of white in a predominantly dark composition – is a reminder of the glacial activity that shaped this landscape over six million years ago. Von Guérard’s New Zealand journey was the last of his many expeditions in the southern hemisphere. The two major works from this trip, Milford Sound and Lake Wakatipu with Mount Earnslaw, Middle Island, New Zealand 1877–79, were immediately acclaimed by contemporary reviewers.5Milford Sound was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1878, and won a ‘First degree of Merit Special for Landscape Painting’ at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879.
