In celebration of Women's History Month, this week on the Access Hour, we are sharing two book launch events by amazing female historians that were held recently at the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville! First up, we'll take you back to February 25, 2025, when the Filson hosted the book launch for Jessica K. Whitehead's insightful new text, "Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard." Jessica offers remarks on her comprehensive biography of the writer, artist, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988) and the deep impact Harlan and his wife, Anna, have had on Kentucky's culture. Whitehead's book delves into Hubbard's family background, education, and relationships, and into his theories on art, writing, music, and philosophy. Using journals, letters, paintings, manuscripts, and sketches, Whitehead pieces together the distinct phases of Hubbard's life, providing new insights into his character and legacy. Following the remarks, members of the NouLou Chamber Players, Heather Thomas (violin) and Cecilia Huerta-Lauf (cello), join with pianist Sebastian Chang in the world premiere of composer Daniel Gilliam's “Piano Trio No. 2: Payne Hollow.” This exciting new piece of music, written by Gilliam in conjunction with the book launch celebrates the Hubbards' vision of living and working on their own terms. The trio also honors the Harlan and Anna Hubbards' deep love of classical music performance—showcasing the instruments they once played: piano, cello, and violin. Jessica K. Whitehead, writer and curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, is author of "The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects" and a contributor to "The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard: From the Collection of Bill and Flo Caddell." Daniel Gilliam is a composer from Louisville, KY. He is also the program director, and an announcer, on 90.5 WUOL Classical Louisville. Watch a recording of the evening and see the musical performance and images referenced at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucL0S6vD94. Following that, we'll hear from another amazing historian, Eliza McGraw, who spoke at the Filson Historical Society on March 6, 2025 about her brand new book, "Astride: Horses, Women, and a Partnership That Shaped America." In the book, Eliza weaves together stories of women who pioneered in worlds such as Thoroughbred breeding, the circus, and horse rescue at a time when American women in general internalized the lessons of horsewomen: take chances, take up more space, and learn to get back on. From tamers to caretakers and performers to teachers, all worked with horses to buck the status quo. Expressing the idea of femininity with athleticism and authority, these trailblazers changed the way America understood women. Richly illustrated with period photographs, Astride demonstrates that even small changes can advance the fight for progress. Eliza McGraw is the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award–winning author of "Here Comes Exterminator! The Longshot Horse, the Great War, and the Making of an American Hero" and a contributing writer for EQUUS magazine. Donald Macleod explores Mendelssohn's experience in the British IslesMendelssohn's relationship with Britain began when he was 20 years old, when London became the first stop of his Grand Tour. This week Donald Macleod explores the composer's experiences in Britain, considering the mark he left on musical life in these islands, the works he wrote here, and what he got up to in the course of the ten visits he made across his lifetime. Mendelssohn took inspiration from the scenery, but he also got his first professional engagements in Britain, and in return, by the end of his life, Britain lionized him.Music Featured:Songs Without Words Op 19b No 1 Symphony No 1 in C minor (1st mvt) 12 Lieder Pp 9: III – Wartend Octet in E flat major (3rd mvt) Concerto in E major for Two pianos (2nd & 3rd mvts) Fantasie in F# minor (Mvt 1) Symphony No 3 in A minor 'Scottish' (1st mvt) 3 Fantasies (or Caprices) Op 16 String Quartet in E flat Major (1st mvt) Organ Sonata No 3 (1st mvt) Symphony No 3 in A minor 'Scottish' (4th mvt) Songs without Words Op 19b No 3 Hebrides Overture Piano Concerto No 1 in G minor (2nd & 3rd mvts)) Songs Without Words Op 19b (Nos 2, 5, 6) Symphony No 4 in A major 'Italian' (3rd & 4th mvts) Songs Without Words Op 102 No 1 Piano Concerto No 2 in D minor (2nd & 3rd mvts) Piano Trio No 1 (1st mvt) A Midsummer Night's Dream (Nos 5 & 7) Violin Concerto in E minor (1st mvt) 6 Songs Op 99 No 5 Elijah Part 1 (excerpt) Octet in E flat major (1st mvt) String Quartet No 6 in F minor (3rd mvt) Elijah Part 2 (excerpt)Presented by Donald Macleod Produced by Megan Jones for BBC Audio Wales and WestFor full track listings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001v4jhAnd you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we've featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z

SynopsisAt 2 p.m. on today's date in 1855, the first in a series of afternoon chamber music concerts was given at Dodworth's Hall in New York City. As a contemporary newspaper put it, “In consequence of the numerous evening engagements of the city, and to enable ladies to be present without escort, it is proposed to give matinees in preference to soirees.”The concert was a great success, and many of the fashionably dressed ladies who attended were forced to stand, as all available seats were already occupied. In addition to classics by Schubert and Mendelssohn, the audience heard new music, the American premiere of a recently published piano trio by 21-year old German composer Johannes Brahms. The New York Times opined that the Brahms contained “many good points and much sound musicianship” but possessed also “the defects of a young writer; ... the motives seldom fall on the ear freshly.”It's doubtful that Brahms ever saw that review or even knew that his new trio had been played in America. But in 1889, 35 years later, Brahms extensively revised his youthful work, transforming his first major chamber work into his last.Music Played in Today's ProgramJohannes Brahms (1833-1897) Piano Trio No. 1 (1854 version); Odeon Trio Capriccio 10 633

Donald Macleod surveys the life and music of the elusive French composer, Edouard Lalo Even if you know the name, it's possible you might not be able to place the French composer Edouard Lalo date-wise. He was born in Lille in 1823. Berlioz was his senior in age by some twenty years, Saint-Saëns twelve years his junior. Lalo has a direct contemporary in the shape of César Franck, another composer who preferred to stay out of the limelight. As a musician, Lalo cut an independent path, preferring to complete his music studies privately rather than following the accepted route of attending the Paris Conservatoire. Lalo had a retiring nature, a man who appears to have preferred the quiet life. That doesn't mean he wasn't sociable. He seems to have been generally well liked. He lived in Paris from the age of sixteen and mixed with and knew all the leading musical personalities of the day. Aside from the Symphonie espagnole, he wrote several operas, a ballet, a symphony, a whole number of orchestral and chamber works including three piano trios and a string quartet, and something in the region of 30 songs. Trying to get a handle on Lalo isn't straightforward. The first letter that's been preserved dates from 1848, by which time Lalo was in his late twenties. His son Pierre was a primary source of information about his father, but more recent research indicates the picture he drew seems to have been somewhat rose-tinted. The first full length biography in English has yet to be published. Donald Macleod sets about mapping the life and the music of this elusive, yet significant figure in French musical history in a survey that takes us from Lalo's early experiences in Lille, where he first met Berlioz, to his eventual triumph, age sixty on the opera stage with Le roi d'Ys. The streets must have seemed like they were paved with gold when Haydn visited London in 1791. He was feted and applauded everywhere he went as one of Europe's leading composers. He hobnobbed with royalty, the Prince of Wales commissioned a portrait of him from leading society portraitist John Hoppner. It's still regarded as one of the best images we have today. Haydn could hardly have imagined all this as a boy. His really is a rags to riches story. Born in 1732 in humble circumstances, Haydn's musical talent won him a position as a choir boy in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral. However, he was forced to leave after his voice broke and, by the age of 17, he was on the streets, with only “three miserable shirts and a worn-out coat” to his name. Happily his life did then take an upward turn. Haydn was employed by the Esterhàzys, one of the most powerful and influential families in the Hapsburg monarchy for an astonishing 48 years. But this week, Donald Macleod puts the public face of this celebrated figure to one side. He's going to be looking at Haydn through a narrower lens, drawing a picture of the composer through the relationships he enjoyed with some of his closest family and friends. One of the things that really sets Gabriel Fauré apart is the singing style of his music. He was an exceptional and prolific composer of song so it's no wonder that we hear that singing quality even in his instrumental works. Fauré's "Morceau de Concours" is an incredibly special tiny gem. Don't be fooled by the title. Though he wrote it as a sight-reading examination piece for students at the Paris Conservatory, it is a poetic lullaby. -A musical balm for this most dark time of year. We hear examples of the fox's witty participation, learn some hound history, get insight into the formal wardrobe etiquette, and paint a picture of a day in the field. In the last section, Rita explains her deep animal friendships starting from her orphaned childhood. She shares two short stories, one about a mounted specter & another about animal sentience & love. Allyson Devenish chooses her favourite recording of Schubert's Piano Trio No 1 in B flat, D.898 Schubert began composing this masterpiece in 1827, the year before his death, at the same time as working on his famous song cycle Die Winterreise. It was a period in his life of illness and melancholy. But this work is brimming with lyricism and life force. Robert Schumann said of it: “One glance at Schubert's Trio in Bb and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.” The work has attracted all the great performers of chamber music, from Alfred Cortot, Jacques Thibaud and Pablo Casals to the Beaux Arts Trio to the best musicians of today.

Synopsis Under the old Julian calendar in use in Czarist Russia, on today's date in 1861, the Romantic composer Anton Arensky was born in Novgorod. If you prefer, you can also celebrate Arensky's birthday on July 12 – the same date under the modern Gregorian calendar, but Arensky was such a Romantic that the Old Style date seems, well, more appropriate somehow. Arensky studied with Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov, and admired the music of Tchaikovsky. Arensky taught at the Moscow Conservatory and published two books: a “Manual of Harmony” and “A Handbook of Musical Forms.” His own students included a number of famous Russian composers, including Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Glière. Arensky wrote three operas, two symphonies, concertos, chamber works, and suites for two pianos – but it's his Piano Trio in D minor that gets performed and recorded more often than any of his other works. A victim of tuberculosis, Arensky spent the last years of his life in a Finnish sanatorium. He died young – just 44 years old – in 1906. Donald Macleod explores Dvořák's American years and uncovers what he achieved during his time there. Antonín Dvořák became the first Czech composer to achieve global fame. His gift for transforming the folk styles of his native Bohemia into richly Romantic classical music won him admirers far beyond his homeland. Consequently, Dvořák was approached to leave Europe and serve as director of the newly established National Conservatory of Music in America. His sponsors hoped he would help foster a new and distinctive American musical style, less reliant upon Germanic traditions. During his time in America, from 1892 – 1895, Dvořák composed many of his most celebrated works, including his 9th symphony and his cello concerto. Before leaving, he'd started work on his Cello Concerto, inspired by his yearning for the Bohemian countryside. Back at home, Dvořák also completed his String Quartet No 13 which some have seen to be his final work to have musical associations with America. Dvořák's had set out to encourage American musicians to look to their own traditions rather than simply following behind Europe. He may not have been entirely successful but he did encourage others in that aim, such as Harry T. Burleigh. Burleigh said of Dvořák that he'd assisted in changing attitudes of African American's towards their own folk tradition, and most importantly, that Dvořák "was a man of the people". Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part. However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". For more than 100 years, chamber music was played primarily by amateur musicians in their homes, and even today, when chamber music performance has migrated from the home to the concert hall, many musicians, amateur and professional, still play chamber music for their own pleasure. Playing chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, that differ from the skills required for playing solo or symphonic works. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described chamber music as "four rational people conversing".Wikipedia

On Thursday 21st January 2021 the Leiermann Trio performed Schubert's magnificant Piano Trio no. 2 in Eb major at the Central City Library as part of the Thursday Heritage Concerts programme. Featuring Harris Leung on violin, Hyen Kim on cello and Jonathon Dunlop on piano, the Trio gave their inaugural performance as an ensemble. This podcast features the first allegro movement followed by a brief interview with the musicians. Schubert's trio was completed in November 1827, and first performed on the 26th March 1828, in a private concert of works entirely by Schubert, including a string quartet (possibly The Death and the Maiden quartet, D. 810) and songs for choir and solo voices. It was a successful premiere, and resulted in the publication of the work later that year – shortly before Schubert’s untimely death at the age of 32 on the 19th November 1828. Unlike the B-flat major Piano Trio D. 898, this trio is much more expansive and is one of the longest trios of its time.

Composed in 1839 at age 30, this piece is universally recognised as one of Mendelssohn’s greatest works. Written in the backdrop of Romantic angst, Mendelssohn employs a Schumannesque style and broad melodies to enrapture the audience. The first movement dives straight in with a dark cello melody followed by the violin’s counter-melody. All throughout, the piano’s syncopation and flying arpeggios creates the atmosphere of agitation. The second movement then expresses a peaceful and beautiful theme taken from one of Mendelssohn’s own Songs Without Words. The spirited scherzo ricochets the melody between the musicians whilst also reminiscing the thematic material from the first movement. The finale mirrors the first movement with its lyrical contrast between the dark and cheerful moods underpinned by the busy and complex piano part with whirling arpeggios and chromatic octaves. The trio finishes with a modulation to the dominant major culminating in a charming and definitive ending.

Donald Macleod explores Beethoven's life and music through the years 1813-1815. This week, Donald Macleod explores Ludwig van Beethoven’s life through the years of 1813-1815 – a time of great change throughout Europe as Napoleon was overthrown. For Beethoven, it was undoubtedly the most successful period of his entire career, as he began, at last, to receive public recognition for his music. However, these years also saw him slump to an artistic nadir as he succumbed to the call for patriotic crowd-pleasers in the wake of this massive political change. Composer of the Week is returning to the story of Beethoven’s life and music throughout 2020. Part of Radio 3’s Beethoven Unleashed season marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. Allegro moderato Scherzo – Allegro molto Elegia – Adagio Finale – Allegro non troppo Anton Arensky was an influential Russian composer, pianist, and professor at the Moscow Conservatory where some of his more notable students included Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Gretchaninov. Arensky was himself taught by Rimsky-Korsakov and mentored by Tchaikovsky from whom he drew much inspiration and subsequently is evident in his works. The D minor piano trio starts the first movement in the tradition of late German Romanticism with a grand sonata form wielding impressive, sweeping melodies underlied by tremulous, destabilising, syncopated accompaniment reminiscent of the Mendelssohn D minor trio’s first movement. The second movement “Scherzo” is a whimsical concoction of good humour and delightful cheer presenting the light-hearted spirit of the dance. The third movement “Eegia” presents an unrelenting sombre mood with muted strings and tender themes to really emphasise the grieving character of music as this trio was dedicated to the memory of Karl Davydov, a renowned Russian cellist and Arensky’s friend. The Finale begins with an explosive theme but soon recalls motifs from the previous movements giving the piano trio a cyclic structure before insistently driving the work to a fantastical end. Donald Macleod follows Beethoven through the years 1810-1812. This week, Donald Macleod explores Ludwig van Beethoven’s life through 1810-1812, a period of great financial hardship for all of Vienna in the aftermath of Napoleon’s second occupation of the city. Beethoven struggled through this economic depression, composing his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies with little hope of getting performances. The financial crisis wasn’t the only thing to afflict the composer either; alongside an increase in physical ailments, Beethoven also suffered a great emotional crisis which culminated in the letter he wrote to his unnamed ‘Immortal Beloved’. If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support Hello, my name is Adam Ayrton Stoner and this is Recently, a monthly email round-up letting you know what I've been doing, reading, watching, listening to and enjoying recently. In a typical month, I usually finish these newsletters about a week before they land in your inbox but this edition was hard to write for reasons that, if you flick to any news channel for 30 seconds or more, are plainly obvious. This update began as a lengthy rant about a handful of wealthy companies that, in the face of lacking professional guidance of any kind, have announced a return to business as usual, all while your rule-abiding local florist, café or barbers stay shuttered – were we ever ‘all in this together'? If there is to be a silver lining for this virus, let it be further highlighting the dogshit companies to avoid when we come out of lockdown, none of which have ever featured in these newsletters. Here's the much more simple (and relaxed!) form this edition ended up taking instead. This month, I've been: Producing and editing Stuck at Home for the UK's children's radio station Fun Kids, which you can find wherever you get your podcasts and for a short while on BBC Sounds. Providing guidance to friends on starting their own podcasts, including which platforms to use and what it should look and sound like. If you're thinking of starting your own podcast and are after feedback, want some artwork, or want to find out how a producer can help lift your solo project to the next level, send me an email. I've also been writing a lot – in Standard Notes, the end-to-end encrypted note taking app, about lockdown and some of my worries about it. I've been using the time at home to get a grip on the mundane day-to-day tasks that sometimes escape us in our usual lives. I've been upgrading a lot of my monthly subscriptions to annual ones, eschewing monthly bills and saving some cash in the long-run and giving everything a good clean and tidy! I've been listening to: I've created an Apple Music playlist of the tunes I've been listening to recently. Tap here to give it a listen (or take a look, so you can find tunes on your platform of choice). It contains tunes from Hayley Williams' solo project Petals for Armor, Broadcast, Cornelius, Gorillaz, Femi Kuti, and more. I've also been listening to longform interviews from the likes of Thom Yorke and more, most courtesy of Apple's radio station, Beats 1, which, although I ripped into it in my 2016 university dissertation, is absolutely killing it right now. My opinion on the station has almost 180º'd – I need to write a follow-up! I've been watching: Masterclass. I'm not one of these people eager to make every waking moment of their life a mission in productivity but Masterclass is a fantastic way to fill moments you might be saving instead of, say, commuting. Vogue's Creative Director Anna Wintour has been teaching me leadership, a former FBI negotiator has been telling me how to haggle, and Gordon Ramsay has been teaching me cookery, all from the comfort of my bed. I've been reading: Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life, a pop-science ‘my experience' book (it's sold in Urban Outfitters, which tells you all you need to know) but an interesting insight nonetheless. Against Creativity by Oli Mould Year of Wonder: Classical Music for Every Day by BBC Radio 3 presenter Clemency Burton-Hill. The pick for May 3rd is Piano Trio No. 2 in E flat major, K. 498 (‘Kegelstatt'), III: Rondo – Allegretto by Mozart, which you can presumably find on your streaming platform of choice

Donald Macleod explores the prolific life of Joseph Haydn, with a spotlight on his masses Joseph Haydn’s prodigious creativity earned him the titles Father of the Symphony and Father of the String Quartet. However, he was also occupied with sacred music throughout his career. This week, as Donald Macleod follows Haydn’s journey from humble choirboy to Europe’s most celebrated composer, he shines the spotlight on music from Haydn’s many settings of the Mass. It's music that is as chock-full of invention and character as any of the instrumental forms he made his own. In this week’s episode Donald illustrates Haydn’s generosity and sense of humour, the obstacles thrown into Haydn’s path throughout his career, the importance he placed on religion, and the effect war and turmoil had on his music. Work for piano trio by Schubert performed by Claremont Trio on April 26, 2015. Schubert: Trio in E flat Major, Op. 100Some works call for their own podcast. We have just such a piece on this program: Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2, opus 100. We’ll hear it performed by the Claremont Trio: violinist Emily Bruskin, cellist Julia Bruskin, and pianist Donna Kwong. The second movement features a minor tune that—thanks to Schubert—has become fairly well known. The use of this folk tune was supposedly inspired by the composer’s encounter with a Swedish folk singer shortly before he wrote the piece. If you listen carefully, you’ll notice that the theme returns. In the final movement, it makes a second appearance, this time a bit altered to fit its new surroundings, but still recognizable. It gives the expansive piece a sense of coherence and familiarity, a feel of musical déjà vu: I’ve been here before, one can’t help but think, although things look very different the second time around.Unlike many of his other late works, Schubert actually had the opportunity to hear this trio played before he passed away. It was performed at an engagement party for a school friend of Schubert’s.

Works for violin, cello, and piano performed by the Claremont Trio.Mozart: Piano Trio No. 3 in B-flat Major, K. 502Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49The piano trio—an ensemble of violin, cello, and piano—was one of the great innovations of classical and Romantic chamber music. Before that time, composers wrote for similar groups of instruments, but the pieces rarely gave equal prominence to the three players. Classical and Romantic composers shifted the balance of the trio by giving equal weight to all three players and putting equal thought into each instrument’s part. In fact, Mendelssohn made extensive revisions after completing the first draft of his Piano Trio No. 1, adding more elaborate and technically challenging passagework to up the ante for the pianist. Mozart was a true father of the piano trio genre, and his B-flat trio is considered one of his best contributions, chock full of tuneful melodies arranged with grace and balance to show off all three members of the trio to their best advantage.

Works for flute and piano and piano trio performed by flutist Dora Seres, pianist Emese Mali, and the Claremont Trio.Bartók: Three Folksongs from County CsikDvořák: Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65Today we hear two pieces by Eastern European composers heavily influenced by folk music. Many have pointed to the third piano trio as a significant turning point in Dvořák’s style, a moment when his music began to take on the formal heft and cosmopolitan European style of his mentor, Brahms, stepping away from his more folk-inspired earlier works. Before the trio, we’ll hear a brief set by Bartók, another work at the crossroads between folk and art music. One of Bartók’s first experiences with folk music came when he overheard a Transylvanian-born maid singing at a Hungarian resort where he was staying, and decided to write down what he heard. Three years later he traveled to Transylvania to study and transcribe songs there, including the three in this cycle.

Bach: Partita for solo flute in A minor, BWV 1013 Schumann: Piano Trio No. 3 in G minor, Op. 110The first piece on today’s program is Bach’s Partita in A minor, made up of four movements that constitute a typical baroque dance suite. Because the work is for solo flute, with no accompanying instrument to provide the harmonic bass figures, Bach had to conjure meter, harmony and counterpoint in one solo melodic instrument. The result is a challenging piece, demanding frequent leaps between registers to create the effect of multiple voices in just one instrument. Robert Schumann idolized Bach. Throughout his life he collected and studied Bach’s works, especially the Well-Tempered Clavier, which greatly influenced his own keyboard compositions. Even within Schumann’s lush and romantic Piano Trio No. 3, the flowing lines and densely layered voices mask a carefully refined structure, a rigor of form and development that hints at Bach’s central role in Schumann’s musical world.
