Welcome to Episode 42 of Endurance Horse Podcast Stories of EPM & Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM Part 2 of a 3 part series Created by: Christina Hyke April 2021 Most difficult day of my life spurred me into creating a three part series on EPM. In Part 2 of 3 episodes with a focus to shed light on EPM. Most horse owners that have even heard of EPM equate this disease as showing up as a horse with a wobbly or drunken hind end, though there are many small, red flags that show up long before a sudden onset of EPM. EPM is an infection of protozoa that attack the central nervous system of the end host, the horse. Some varieties of this protozoa tend more towards attacking the muscle, to learn more tune into this episode of Endurance Horse Podcast where we will hear two more stories from horse owners followed by an interview with Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM of Crosby Equine Services. Sandy Patmore, Michigan USA Amy Maguire, USA Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM Oklahoma, USA Crosby Equine Service on Facebook Veterinarians Encouraging and Teaching VET Program About Dr. Sam Crosby - American Association of Equine Practitioners Karbo Combo Supplement Pathogenes Labs Testing Lab for EPM “Pathogenes is a small research laboratory with large ideas, located in Fairfield, Florida. We test samples, analyze data, and invent tools to diagnose and treat horses with neurodegenerative diseases including EPM, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.” We were blessed to get you a code for Karbo Combo probiotic, use this at the Karbo Store Website. I tried Karbo Combo for a follow up probiotic after Grace's treatment for EPM. Grace had a significant improvement with Karbo Combo and continues to be on it. We also tried Karbo Combo for JR, I did not notice any difference with this product. With JR we did see a big difference in him with SarStart as an aftercare follow up, and with Grace, not much difference on Sarstart. Each horse has it's own individual biome, and what benefits one greatly may not have a significant affect on the next horse. Before starting Karbo Combo, Grace could not back up straight, she was swinging her left hind leg significantly and backing up almost sideways. For Grace, after about three weeks on Karbo Combo we noticed a significant difference with her. She eats it readily, and she tends to be picky with powders etc, Karbo is a pellet and we plan to keep her on it for the rest of the year or longer. The Karbo Store gave us a one time use coupon code for our listeners to try Karbo Combo. We reached out to them because not only had other horse owners dealing with EPM had great things to say about Karbo Combo, so did Dr. Sam Crosby. It was at their recommendation that we gave Karbo a try and wanted to see if we would get get a better deal for you to try it at least once with your horses and see if it helps: www.karbostore.com Coupon Code for $10 off: EHP10 WARHORSE Endurance Challenges Pony Express 1900 Mile Challenge Renegade Hoof Boots US Rider Skito Karbo Combo Christina Hyke & Houdini Creator of Endurance Horse Podcast WARHORSE Endurance Horse Podcast Join the Group on Facebook Christina Hyke, creator of Endurance Horse Podcast and WARHORSE Endurance Challenges. For Grace to be applied we need to first expose our true selves to God. When we accept his grace, we then know we built on His foundation not our own. "Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified." Acts 20:32

It was so wonderful to chat with Grace of Maker Mountain Fabrics about hew sewing shed. What is a sewing shed you ask? Well, for Grace, it is her workspace - a separate structure she built on her property to run her business from. But it is also a symbol of all the things she hopes and works hard for in her business. The shed is literally a physical representation to the dedication Grace has to her business and her commitment to the work she does - also to the confident decision she made to invest in herself. For Grace the decision to build the shed was a "now or never" moment. I spoke with her about how she felt facing this large investment, what her motivation was, how she overcame the fear and what's happened since she has had the shed! This episode addresses something all business owners will face at one point or another: having to decide to go all in or stay status quo. In Grace's case, building her sewing shed meant saying yes to her business and its future. I'm excited for you to hear from Grace about how this investment of time, effort and money was a family affair and a true commitment to her business. Ari and Maggie flip the normal format this week for a long interview with Curtis Duffy and Michael Muser, the team behind the Michelin Star-winning Grace and Avenues (and the subjects of the “For Grace” documentary on Netflix) to talk about their start, what happened with Grace, and what to expect from their forthcoming concept, Ever.
Grace Steckler is literally a saving grace to hundreds of pet owners in Washington, DC. Founded in 2000, Saving Grace Pet Care has grown to be a thriving business with 25 employees and three franchises. In addition to Grace turning her business into one of the most successful pet care companies in Washington, DC, she has also owned a cleaning company and a handyman service. Being an entrepreneur has brought about many challenges, some great accomplishments, and a great sense of personal satisfaction for Grace. It has also allowed her to remain a stay at home mom to her three children, to travel, and to have a freedom that would be difficult to attain otherwise. Grace has taken a very interesting path in life with several twists and turns. She has combined many different life experiences from living as a nun, to teaching high school science, to traveling abroad, to running her own pet care business. She took lessons she learned from each of these experiences to create a highly successful business. Her teaching background has allowed her to easily keep her furry clients and team on task while others often struggle to stay calm and in control. Her love of travel, new languages, and cultures keeps her motivated to put lots of systems and processes in place to keep her business running efficiently without her. It’s broken down to a science at this point - no pun intended. In this episode Britt and Grace go into great detail on what it was like for Grace to franchise her business. Saving Grace Pet Care’s key to success is focusing on caring for it’s large team of 25 employees. This includes making sure they all have a healthy work life balance, are compensated very well, and are allowed to thrive on their own terms while still working effectively within the team and the franchise. The name of the game is “Win-Win”. Grace wants each of her employees to feel empowered and part of a larger mission, which has allowed her to keep many team players around for many years. Grace believes that the happier your team is the smoother your business runs. She shows her appreciation in many different ways. For example, randomly during the cold winter months she’ll email each of her team members a Starbucks gift card with a note thanking them for all their hard work. Franchising is something only a few brave souls ever tackle during their business endeavors. Grace goes into great detail on the pros and cons of franchising, what your business goals need to be in order for the cost of franchising to be worth the investment, and how she targets areas to open new franchises. For Grace, her franchising journey started with a few google inquires, several interviews with many franchise lawyers, and then a lot of pain staking paperwork that took a year to get in order. In the end it was all worth it. She felt that empowering her team not as managers, but as business owners with the most mutually beneficial outcome for both her and each individual business owner. Franchising was the perfect blend of business, teaching, and freedom for the Saving Grace team. In this episode you’ll learn: - How Grace went from a 12 year career as a nun teaching high schoolers to becoming a business owner - How she carried over skills from previous career as a teacher to her pet care business - How to clearly communicate the job’s ins and outs to new hires and what that teaching process looks like - How allowing her managers to work remotely has caused them to feel empowered and stay with the company long term. - How implementing a win-win strategy in her company has created long term happy employees - How to go from a single business to a franchise - How to find help with hiring through Jazz HR. - How to know if franchising is a good fit for you - How changing locations can keep you from burning out. - How she integrates her business into her family life which allows her job to feel less like work and more like life.
Why did the judgement on Eli's house fall on the entire generation? 1 Samuel 2:22 -31 says.. If one man sins against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sins against the Lord, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the Lord would slay them. To Eli the Lord said, Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. The answer lies in Hosea 4:6 (KJV) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. How can a father pass on knowledge to their child if he has rejected that knowledge? It is the lack of that knowledge in both fathers and their children that disqualifies them from posterity in the Lord. Wisdom is a principle thing. Knowledge is key. It was knowledge that distinguished Solomon from Adonijah. Even though he was the younger son. 1 king 1:6 Adonijah had not been instructed by his father. Proverbs 4 : 3-12 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. PRAYER POINTS 1. For Grace to balance our desire for entertainment with our need to get more knowledge. 2. For humility to learn and be taught. 3. For eyes that see and ears that hear.
CYL was founded by Grace Gulley, an empowerment coach and community architect who’s on a mission to help women create a life (and business) they love and don't need an escape from. The CYL community was started as a potential avenue in which to make some creative female friends, and rekindle her creative ambitions. It quickly turned into something far greater than imagined, and set Grace down a new life path. Through this community Grace has discovered her own love of creating genuine connections. She has also gained confidence in herself, and built a network of amazing ladies and developed lasting friendships. Her biggest hope is that this community can do for others what it has done for her. It was incredible to be able to sit down with Grace and talk about why she ACTUALLY created CYL. I quickly realized it started from when she was lost and didn't know what her purpose was. Something that many of us are either dealing with right now or have dealt with in the past. But Grace made some dramatic changes in her life to try and shake things up. After moving to the “woods” of Portland and realizing that it was really just another city to be lonely in, Grace started to focus inward on the things she could control. But nothing came easy for her. Every time she felt like something was working, there was another breakdown around every corner. Nothing felt right and nothing seemed to stick. But as she created CYL, and continued to battle doubt, there was a growth that was forming through sheer persistence. Every detour created a different door, that molded CYL into something better. The journey was certainly a rollercoaster of anxiety, but things were happening. Grace is now at a point where she is working extra hard on herself and on her business. A balance that she knows needs to lean in the direction of herself. For Grace, success for CYL will happen. But it was finally finding inner peace that was the last piece of the puzzle. Find Grace and CYL Online: Website - https://www.cylcommunity.com/ and https://www.gracegulley.com/ Instagram - @cylcollective Some Questions I Ask: How have you dealt with CYL maybe not becoming anything more than a side hustle? Do you think the journey is always an anxiety rollercoaster. How long might that last? Are you your biggest enemy sometimes, or even most of the time? Why is it so important for entrepreneurs to be apart of a close knit and supportive community? Do you need to be extraordinary or have an extraordinary idea to be a successful entrepreneur? In This Episode, You Will Learn About: Running away into the “woods” to fix your problems Personal growth Building a community Learning to be open and vulnerable for your own health and success Putting yourself before your work

My next guest is the author of Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. Cynthia Toussaint serves as a spokesperson at For Grace and has had complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS for the past 35 years which later developed into fibromyalgia and overlapping autoimmune disease. Cynthia founded For Grace in 2002 to raise awareness about CRPS and later expanded the organization's mission to include all women in pain. Before becoming ill, she was an accomplished ballerina and worked professionally as a dancer, actor, and singer. Today, she's a leading advocate for women in pain, raising awareness through local, national and worldwide media as well as public speaking. Her work has personified what it's like to be a woman who lives with pain, beyond this treatment of pain, and the gender bias toward women who suffer with chronic pain type syndromes. She later developed Fibromylagia and other over-lapping, auto-immune conditions. Cynthia founded For Grace in 2002 to raise awareness about CRPS and five years later expanded the organization’s mission to include all women in pain. Before becoming ill, she was an accomplished ballerina and worked professionally as a dancer, actor and singer. Since 1997, she has been a leading advocate for women in pain, raising awareness through local, national and worldwide media as well as public speaking. Toussaint championed and gave key testimony at two California Senate informational hearings. The first, in May 2001, was dedicated to CRPS awareness. The second took place in February 2004 and explored the chronic under treatment of and gender bias toward women in pain. Both of these efforts were the first of their kind in the nation. In 2006, Toussaint ran for the California State Assembly to bring attention to her CRPS Education Bill that Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed after she got it to his desk in its first year. Her next bill, a seven year effort, was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in 2015. This Step Therapy legislation reformed an unethical prescription practice used by the health insurance industry to save money in a way that increased the suffering of California pain patients. Toussaint was the first CRPS sufferer to be featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and on the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio. She is a consultant for The Discovery Channel, ABC News, FOX News, the National Pain Report and PainPathways, the official magazine of the World Institute of Pain. Also, she is a guide and guest contributor for Maria Shriver’s Architects of Change website. Her many speaking engagements include the National Institutes of Health and Capitol Hill. She is the author of Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. Also, Toussaint is experiencing her first-ever partial CRPS remission largely due to the narrative therapy of writing this book. Toussaint continues to be a leading advocate for health care reform in California. She was instrumental in changing public opinion which sparked sweeping HMO reform legislation that was signed by Governor Gray Davis in 1999. Her focus has now shifted to creating a single-payer, universal health care plan in California that would provide a model for the rest of the country. On this episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, I had the pleasure of welcoming Cynthia Toussaint onto the show to discuss her experiences as a patient managing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Cynthia Toussaint is the founder and spokesperson of For Grace, an organization that promotes better care and wellness for women in pain. Toussaint championed and gave key testimony at two California Senate hearings – one was dedicated to CRPS awareness, the second explored the chronic under-treatment of and gender bias toward women in pain. She will lead a 2017 conference that will convene healthcare and policy leaders to bring pain care into the 21st century. The solutions proposed at the event will mandate structural changes that respond to patient needs and gender inequalities in California. Toussaint is the author of Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. In this episode, we discuss: -The story behind Cynthia’s long battle with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome -How Cynthia developed independent survival solutions when medical providers would no longer help -Why gratitude, acceptance and grieving are necessary components for the management of chronic pain -For Grace: better care and wellness for women in pain -And so much more! Cynthia’s long history of battling unimaginable physical and psychological pain has taught her how to be resilient. She believes, “We don’t know what we can live with until we are there.” Cynthia has used her past experiences as inspiration for her advocacy and has created meaningful change for CRPS patients. Based on her experience, she stresses, “Don’t ever let anybody say you can’t get something done.” Cynthia has found that adversity can breed strength and that, “People who go through the impossible odds survive and they go on to make the world a better place.” After exhausting her family support system and the recommendations of her medical providers were unable to help with her chronic pain, Cynthia found her greatest relief through her own strength and will. She states, “With high impact chronic pain, we have to refuse to be a victim. We have to be our own advocates. We have to be deeply involved with self management.” For more information on Cynthia: Cynthia Toussaint serves as Spokesperson at For Grace and has had Complex Regional Pain Syndrome for 34 years. Chutney Work. How does a gentleman from Yorkshire who works in marketing for Dance Place in Washington, DC end up making and selling chutney? Like so many food journeys, this one is long and meandering but ultimately full of lessons, challenges, and great rewards. Meet David Hopper of Chutney Ferret Industries, my guest for Episode 57. David grew up in Britain way before English cuisine was coming into its own. Lots of beef. Lots of bland. Lots of brown sauce. Thankfully his gran was a stellar cook, creating gorgeous legs of lamb and pork with crackling skin. A very good thing. Why aren't there more butcher shops selling pork with the skin on here in America? I'm thinking that's something that needs to be remedied! We need suet too. Because you can't make good Christmas puddings without it! Speaking of Christmas puddings, what exactly are they? Another quintessentially British item, a sweet concoction of fruits, nuts, flour, breadcrumbs, eggs, suet, beer, rum, brandy, and spices steamed together slowly for four hours. Don't be alarmed! This stuff is good, a cross between a compote and a cake. David's puddings receive raves, are completely delicious, and always sell out. I've got one sitting on my counter which I can't wait to try in a few weeks. Great grilled up and served with a nice Wensleydale cheese, which is native to Yorkshire, or just served warm with brandy cream or ice cream. David's date and tomato ketchup is a riff on HP Sauce in Britain. Magnificent on a sausage sandwich! Ketchup is never just tomatoes but a way of preparing fruit so it becomes a condiment sauce, a major part of the whole spectrum that is Anglo-Indian cooking. Even the word "ketchup" or "catsup" has its origins in India. The Chutney Ferret version is a blend of fruits, tamarind, five different spices, and secret ingredients without any of the corn syrup, thickeners, or preservatives you find in commercial brands. Did you know Worcestershire sauce is actually catsup? David's version is made from mushrooms, not anchovies, so it's perfect for vegetarians and offers a huge umami flavor bomb to things like Bloody Mary's and your favorite Asian dishes. And of course there's chutney, or "pickle" as it's called in Britain. Gorgeous on sandwiches, terrific as a glaze on fish or meats, and a great flavoring agent for soups and stews. Just remember a little goes a long way. In Britain they use chutney for sandwiches on leftovers at Thanksgiving and Christmas instead of cranberry sauce. But it's also lovely as a side with cold cuts and cheese and your favorite wine. David's spiced plum chutney, arguably the most British kind, is made by blending together plums, apples, raisins, onions, two types of sugar and more than five types of spice. He actually forages all of the plums himself from wild plum trees! It's stunning guys. Great with pimento cheese! We talk at great length about the history of Anglo-Indian cooking, where they overlap, and how Indian flavors are blended deeply into notions of British cuisine to this day. How British cuisine has been at the forefront of nose to tail cooking, or using every single part of the animal to create delicious dishes. Meat as a flavoring agent instead of the centerpiece. David also makes harissa paste using homegrown habaneros. It's extraordinary! Our harissa talk launches a discussion on growing these capsaicin bombs. Why is drinking water the worst thing you can do while eating a habanero? And what is harissa paste? What do you use it for? How can you use his ketchups, catsups, and chutneys in cooking? We cover it all. You can find all of the Chutney Ferret Industries products locally at The Spice Diva. I highly recommend them. They make great gifts but don't delay in purchasing those Christmas puddings because they tend to sell out fast! David just started working at The Spice Diva part-time so stop in and say hello! If you have any questions about these strange, exotic condiments he'll be glad to answer them. And offer up a taste. My favorite episodes are those where I leave knowing more than when I arrived. Sensing I may have just made a new friend. This was one of those times. David is lovely, his garden beautiful, and the chutneys? Amazing. Hope you enjoy this episode. Happy Holidays everyone!
